1999 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 1999 Toyota Tacoma problems
The 1999 Toyota Tacoma, while a reliable vehicle overall, has a few common problems that owners have reported over the years.
One of the most common issues is rust, particularly in the frame and rear leaf springs and brackets. This is especially true for Tacomas that were used in areas where salt was used on the roads during the winter or in coastal towns where there was a higher percentage of saltwater coming into contact with the underside of the vehicle.
Another issue is the timing belt failure in 3.4L engines. While this is not a widespread problem, some owners have reported prematurely worn bushings, which can lead to timing issues. This is not a major issue, but it does require attention and can be a relatively cheap fix with some know-how and basic tools.
Valve cover oil leaks are also a common issue with the 3.4L engine. This is an ancillary issue that can occur with any engine capable of reaching the multiple 100,000-mile mark. While it is not a major problem, it is something that owners should be aware of and be prepared to address.
The 1999 Tacoma's seats are not particularly comfortable, especially on long drives. The 60/40 split bench seat lacks support and can be uncomfortable for both the driver and passengers.
The mass air flow sensor is another component that can fail on the 1999 Tacoma. This can result in poor acceleration and a rough idle, but it is a relatively cheap and easy fix.
In summary, while the 1999 Toyota Tacoma is a reliable vehicle overall, there are a few common problems that owners should be aware of. These include rust issues, timing belt problems, valve cover oil leaks, uncomfortable seating, and a firm suspension. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues can be minimized or avoided altogether.

- Summary: IN THE SUMMER OF 2016 I HAD NOTICED A LONG STRIP OF METAL HANGING BELOW MY 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A PART OF THE FRAME. AFTER A MORE THOROUGH INVESTIGATION I HAD FOUND THE WHOLE FRAME RUSTED. THEN THROUGH RESEARCH DEEMED IT NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. IN 2009 , AFTER HEARING FROM A FRIEND(NOT TOYOTA), OF AN FRAME RUST ISSUE I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR AN INSPECTION AT THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD IT WAS GOOD WITH NO RECOMMENDATION TO REPLACE NOR TREAT . I LEFT THINKING I HAD A GOOD ONE (FRAME) THAT WASN'T AFFECTED BY THE RUST PROBLEM. FAST FORWARD TO 2016 WHEN OBVIOUS SIGNS OF THE ISSUE BECOME PRESENT AND THEN FIND OUT THERE WAS A 15 YEAR WINDOW TO HAVE THE FRAME REPLACED, TREATED OR BOUGHT BACK. THIS WAS NOT MY DAILY DRIVER BUT DEPENDED ON FREQUENTLY FOR HAULING AND PROJECTS. SO HERE IT SITS GOING ON THREE YEARS STILL NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO WITH IT. IT RUNS GREAT AND TOO NICE TO SCRAP. AND PROBABLY TO COSTLY TO FIX. A BUY BACK WOULD BE THE BEST RESOLUTION

I really like the Tacoma, but I do have a couple of complaints. The handling on curves could be better as the rear end tends to fishtail, and the MPG could be improved. However, I still think it's the best-looking truck out there!
Buck Parisian 2024-11-13
What an amazing truck! It's no wonder they're so hard to find. My Tacoma had about 118,000 miles on it when I drifted off the road on a rainy day and overcorrected, causing my car to flip when it hit a soft spot. But I walked out of the car with only a scratch on my arm. Even though the damage exceeded the value of the car, it kept me completely safe. This car showed no signs of age and, with routine oil changes, would have lasted probably 200,000 more miles. Its bed served all my purposes, offered organizational storage, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Melvina Harber 2024-11-05
This truck has been incredibly reliable, even after being driven for 145K miles. I only had to replace the battery at around 100K miles, the rear axle oil seals at around 130K miles (which were only $7 each and easy to replace), and the exhaust manifold due to a hairline crack at around 140K miles (which was a good excuse to get a header - another easy install). It holds up well with heavy loads and the 2.7L engine is very easy to maintain and practically bulletproof, except for the exhaust manifold. It also performs really well off-road, even with just 2wd. Additionally, lifts and other mods to improve its already great off-road ability are also easy to do. My only complaint is that the front seats are uncomfortable and could use more padding, while the rear seats are only suitable for small children.
Joseph Barrows 2024-11-03
Buy it! This is the best vehicle that I have ever owned. I absolutely recommend this truck to anyone.
Dalton Collins 2024-10-13
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck. Although I've had to take it to the shop a few times for more than regular maintenance, it has handled well for me and does great in every road condition. At 30,000 miles, the air bag hose got tangled in the steering column and had to be fixed. At 54,000 miles, the air flow meter had to be replaced. Now at 65,000 miles and 2 clutches later, the clutch pedal continually squeaks loudly and there is a 'chirping' noise in the clutch that are just 'part of mechanical wear' that nobody can fix, making it hard to sell. I wouldn't have expected to need a clutch at 65,000 miles either. Other than that, I still love the truck!
