- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to the dealer for the State inspection, the dealer informed the contact that the subframe was severely corroded, and there was a large hole in the front leaf spring shackles. The dealer determined that the subframe needed to be reinforced at an auto body shop. The dealer provided an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that two extended warranty letters related to the failure were sent to the vehicle owners. The manufacturer informed the contact that the Extended Warranties had expired; however, the contact never received the letters. The failure mileage was approximately 107,811.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-27
- VIN: 5TELU42N98Z
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Following an oil change my mechanic expressed concern about the amount of rust and damage from the rust on my vehicle frame. Due to his concern, I set up an evaluation appointment with the Arlington Heights (IL) Toyota dealer. They evaluated, videotaped the inspection which showed several rusted-through spots, and said it looked very serious and unsafe. The dealer then contacted the Toyota corporate office who refused to do anything. I'm the second owner. I have all the paperwork from the original owner who followed the rusty frame protocol properly (take it to the dealer who sprays it with rust preventative or replaces the frame). The frame was sprayed by Toyota while he had it and it did not work. There are now several rusted-through areas in the frame and I fear for the safety of myself and my family if we were involved in a crash and the frame were to collapse.
STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-21
- VIN: 5TEUU42N18Z
- Components: STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The brakes completely failed on the vehicle. When inspected the main brake line was found damaged due to the frame of the car being totally corroded and shifting of the mechanical structure. If I were not quick in getting the emergency brake applied, we would have had an uncontrolled crash in traffic and could have potentially been killed. There were no warnings or lights that came on in the vehicle prior to the complete brake failure. The car is currently at a local repair shop and can be inspected if necessary. The frame corrosion was so bad on this car that the repair shop was not comfortable even putting it on a lift as they felt the car frame would break.

- VIN: 5TEMU52N68Z
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: While driving at unknown low speed on 2 lane road, contact observed bed of truck rise vertically in the air, within the frame of rearview mirror. Upon pulling over, further investigation indicated that indeed, while adding body weight to the truck bumper, rear of bed, was more than sufficient to cause the front of the bed to rise. Truck was later moved to dealer location, Courtesy Toyota, Brandon, FL, for inspection. Inspection by Toyota indicated both frame rails were completely severed by corrosion. Truck was tagged out of service and not safe to operate by the OEM. This unit was inspected by same Toyota dealership in Jan 2019, for extended frame corrosion warranty program, and was passed for frame rail replacement as it did not meet the failure criteria of the incorrectly written test. This criteria DOES NOT address all failure modes, nor a normal population of "most likely" failure modes, thus allowing the OEM to side-step responsibility. placing consumers at great risk for bodily harm for both vehicle owners/operators, and the general public in proximity to the traveling vehicle. Known Quality issue. Known Safety issue. Harm is imminent. Financial damage imminent.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-17
- VIN: 5TETX22N08Z
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: We had four Goodyear Assurance 215/70R/15 tires installed on our 2008 Tacoma pick-up by Sam's Club in 2019. While driving at highway speed (~55 mph), the driver's rear tire had a blowout of the outside sidewall. There were no objects or potholes run over. After removing the tire and inspecting the tread, there are no signs of any foreign objects in the tread. The tire pressure checks for all the tires were completed within the previous month, and they were balanced and rotated by Sam's Club within the previous three months. Fortunately, this did not occur on a front tire since we were on a heavily traveled two-lane road and we could have lost control with a catastrophic failure like this one. There were approximately 15k miles of use on all the tires.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-14
- VIN: 5TEMU52N08Z
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I brought my 2008 Toyota Tacoma in and they did an undercoating recall. Since then I've had to replace a broken leaf spring and brake line, and a few weeks ago, brought it in to a Toyota dealership to have a wheel bearing/ axlereplaced that had rusted. On the paper documentation nothing was mentioned regarding the frame deterioration. Recently brought it in for an exhaust replacement and was shown how dangerous the frame was, and that it was too far gone to weld anything to, as "there's nothing to weld to" (and no shop would assume liability for such a fix)by the muffler shop technician. I called the Toyota dealership and was told to bring it somewhere to have a plate welded . Told him that wasn't an option.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-20
- VIN: 5TEKU72N18Z
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: The airbag light first came on about 60 days ago, the first time I tried to use the cruise control after light was first noticed the cruise control did not work. My concern is that as long as the light is on the airbag(s) may or may not deploy. This airbag light has stayed on constantly since first appeared, the cruise control will work intermittently. The component has not been inspected but there is a recall, 12V092000:Air Bag Clockspring Replacement, that addresses this exact concern but appears my VIN is not included. This is obviously a problem on other VIN ranges because mine suffers from this and it is obvious Toyota is aware there is a problem but it just hasn't had enough complaints with my VIN range, likely because there are not as many on the road as the vehicle is 14 years old. I am concerned for my family's safety as well as my own if the airbag fails to deploy because of an accident.

- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: 1. Some years ago Toyota recalled the vehicle for inspection of the frame. Since it was relatively new, it did not need a frame replacement at that time. They claimed to have enhanced protection with some kind of coating. 2. Warrantee for frame corrosion was extended for 12 years but I did not receive a notice for reinspection when that was nearing the end for my vehicle. 3. Although my vehicle just passed inspection, I have been informed that corrosion is progressing, and I will not pass inspection in one two or three years. 4. My vehicle which has low mileage and is otherwise perfectly serviceable for my purposes, will have to be junked because Toyota refuses to take responsibility for shoddy manufacturing (or at least shoddy steel fabrication).

- Summary: We were experiencing a loud rattling noise under the passenger side steer tire and when we hit bumps, it was hard to control the steering and bouncing. When inspected by our mechanic, we found that the frame had rusted through and broke near the passenger side wheel and will no longer pass inspection due to safety. The entire frame has extensive rust issues, even though under costed at time of purchase and two other times during our ownership and was last inspected by Toyota in April 2018 and told all was ok, even though there was an open extension on replacing rusted frames for the 2008 Toyota Tacomas.

THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

This has been an awesome truck for what I use it for. I bought it new in 2008 and it currently has 31,000 miles on it. Although the miles are relatively low, I have not had any failures of any type. The truck has been flawless. It is very comfortable, considering the bench seat, but I did add an aftermarket center console/armrest. Having a place to rest your arm made a big improvement over holding it in your lap or resting on the seat. The engine power is more than adequate. The brakes are a little spongy and road noise on this base model is noticeable.

MPG: With a full tank of 18 gallons, I can drive up to 370 miles in the city (I have never gone past the 3-gallon reserve to test the full mileage). On the highway, I can drive up to 400 miles with the same amount of gas. The cost of filling up the tank is approximately $60 at $3.40 per gallon of 85-octane fuel with 15% ethanol from Costco. I also add LUCAS gas treatment for better performance. Although the interior may have a cheap look and feel, the car's performance is exceptional on any terrain, even with the manufacturer's subpar Firestone Destination LE tires. The engine is reliable and the design is accessible. However, there are some cons to consider, such as limited leg space, easy paint scratches and chips, and frame rusting easily (even after power-washing every time the car is exposed to salty roads). Overall, this car is a great choice for those who prioritize performance over fancy interior design.

I bought this 'mini-taco' on 03-22-2008 to downsize and save money. I am extremely satisfied with this truck. It is the 4x4 regular cab, the smallest Tacoma, but it has great features. Even though it's a 4x4, I'm averaging 23-24 mpg overall while driving moderately. The steering radius is surprisingly good and it handles the road much better than the older generation. The 4cyl engine performs better than expected and can really move if you want it to. I opted for the SR5 package which gives the reg cab truck bucket seats that are very comfortable and supportive. There are many cup holders, and I use the 2 on the rear of the center console for reserve water bottles.

This is a fantastic truck! I love the new body style, and the fact that it's bigger than before. With gas prices being what they are, the fuel mileage is a real plus. The dashboard looks great and is very functional, and the interior is roomy and comfortable. The truck handles really well and responds quickly when needed. We got the LWB and it looks great on the truck. The ride is so smooth, it feels like you're in a Cadillac. I especially love the audio controls on the steering wheel - it's such a convenient feature. And best of all, everything is within easy reach from the driver's seat, so no stretching required!

The best truck on the market! The ride is amazingly comfortable, and it's easy to forget you're driving a truck. I traded in a 2001 Tacoma ext cab, and I thought that was a great truck. However, the 2008 model is leaps and bounds better. The only downside would be the sound system. I paid extra for the 'premium' sound system, but unfortunately, the performance/sound is disappointing.

The heater/AC controls do not have a setting to prevent outside air from entering through the vents, which can be problematic in colder climates. Additionally, wind noise can be overpowering, making it difficult to hold conversations or listen to the radio. The wipers also produce an irritating 'thunk/thunk' noise, and the outside temperature/compass indicator can be difficult to read due to a reflective glare. Furthermore, the narrow seat bolsters can be uncomfortable, and the gas and brake pedals are positioned too closely together.

Tacoma frames rusting is a known issue, but Toyota is committed to standing by their product and addressing any concerns their customers may have.

I have owned three Toyota pickups, including a 99 and an 08 Tacoma. While I initially thought upgrading to the newer model would be an easy decision, I unfortunately encountered a number of issues with the vehicle. These included problems with valves, clutch, steering, suspension, brakes, rust, fuel, and electric, as well as several recalls. These issues resulted in over $5000.00 in repairs at 95,000 miles. While I have had a negative experience with the vehicle, I understand that others may have had different experiences. I would encourage anyone considering a Toyota to do their research and make an informed decision based on their own needs and preferences.

This is a reliable great quality truck, but unfortunately the adjustable lumbar supports caused discomfort for my back. After a while of driving, I could feel the bar pressing against my back. Even when I turned it the other way to take the pressure off, there was a big indentation there which was just as bad. It was so uncomfortable that I decided to sell the truck.

I picked up my Toyota Tacoma in November 2007 because of its quality and dependability. However, I have noticed some issues with rusting on the rear bumper and roof of the cab, as well as the plastic in the wheel well falling out. It's been almost 3 years since I got it, and I'm a bit disappointed with these problems.
