2010 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 2010 Toyota Tacoma problems
The 2010 Toyota Tacoma has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. Over time, these cracks can lead to the separation of the propeller shaft, causing a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash. Toyota has issued a recall for this issue, and dealers will inspect and replace the front propeller shaft on affected vehicles free of charge.
Another common problem with the 2010 Toyota Tacoma is related to the seat belt pre-tensioner. If the access doors are repeatedly and forcefully closed, the screws that attach the seat belt pre-tensioner to the seat belt retractor can loosen over time. If the screws loosen completely, the seat belt pre-tensioner and the retractor spring cover could detach from the seat belt retractor. This can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash, as the seat belt pre-tensioner will not perform as designed. Toyota has issued a recall for this issue as well, and dealers will inspect the seat belt assemblies and replace them if necessary.
The 2010 Toyota Tacoma has also been reported to have issues with the leaf springs, which may fracture due to stress or corrosion. If the leaf spring breaks, it can move out of position and contact surrounding components, including the fuel tank. This can cause a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire. Toyota has issued a recall for this issue, and the remedy for this recall is still under development.
In addition to these recalls, the 2010 Toyota Tacoma has been reported to have several other common problems. For example, the air conditioning system has been reported to fail, often due to refrigerant leaks or electrical failures. The climate system has also been reported to have issues, including problems with the AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, and automatic climate system.
The brakes have also been reported to have issues, including premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, and antilock system problems. The parking brake and master cylinder have also been reported to have issues, as well as caliper problems and issues with the regenerative braking system.
Finally, the 2010 Toyota Tacoma has been reported to have issues with the headlights, which may distort the plastic over time due to the heat generated by the bulb
. This can cause cracks and/or distorted plastic, which can only be fixed by replacing the headlight assembly.
In summary, the 2010 Toyota Tacoma has several common problems based on complaints from its owners, including issues with the propeller shaft, seat belt pre-tensioner, leaf springs, air conditioning system, climate system, brakes, and headlights. Toyota has issued recalls for some of these issues, and owners are encouraged to contact Toyota customer service for more information.

- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR:SPRINGS:LEAF SPRING ASSEMBLY:LEAF
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner and 4x4 vehicles manufactured September 14, 2009, to October 11, 2010. In the affected vehicles, one of the leaf springs may fracture due to stress or corrosion. While being driven, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components including the fuel tank, possibly puncturing the tank and causing a fuel leak.
- Consequence: If the fuel tank leaks fuel from being punctured, there is an increased risk of a fire.

- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2014 FJ Cruiser and Tacoma vehicles equipped with accessory wheels and tires installed by Toyota or dealers prior to the vehicle's first sale. The affected vehicles may list incorrect spare tire size and/or cold tire inflation information on the tire placard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."
- Consequence: If the spare tire is inflated to the incorrect pressure provided on the placard, tire failure may occur while it is being driven on, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: For the involved vehicles, overlay stickers to correct the tire placard will either be mailed to owners or provided to dealers for placement over the incorrect information on the placard. The recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
- Consequence: If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota sent owners an interim notification letter in May 2014 to advise owners of the recall. Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. General Motors sent Pontiac Vibe owners an Interim letter on June 20, 2014 notifying them that parts are currently unavailable. General Motors sent notices to the Pontiac Vibe owners on September 15, 2014, that a remedy is available. The recall began on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-762-2737.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured September 14, 2004, through March 29, 2010; and model year 2011 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured July 1, 2010, through September 7, 2011. If the access doors are repeatedly and forcefully closed, the screws that attach the seat belt pre-tensioner to the seat belt retractor can loosen over time. If the screws loosen completely, the seat belt pre-tensioner and the retractor spring cover could detach from the seat belt retractor.
- Consequence: If the seat belt pre-tensioner detaches from the seat belt assembly, the seat belt pre-tensioner will not perform as designed, increasing the risk of injury in a severe crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt assemblies. Based on the inspection, the seat belt assembly will be replaced or new pre-tensioner screws will be installed with thread-locking sealant and a retractor spring cover with stopper ribs to prevent loosening of the screws. These services will be provided at no cost to the owner. The recall began during February 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
- Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new truck! It sounds like you did your research and made a great choice with the Tacoma. I agree that the silver color looks really cool. It's understandable that with a budget truck, there may be some features that aren't as impressive as you'd like, such as the plastic bed and leaf springs. However, it's great that you're still finding things to appreciate about it. How has your experience been driving it so far?

Researched for a long time. What a solid and refined vehicle! All plastic matches and doesn't squeak. The ride is comfortable and smooth. It sits high enough without realizing it's a truck. The interior is nice and the storage is great. The convertible seating adds to its versatility without being too big.

Hi there! I bought my current Tacoma on November 14th, 2009. Unfortunately, I immediately noticed a problem with the shifting at low speeds, both up and down. Additionally, the fuel mileage was poor, only 14 to 16 compared to my old 2001. However, after visiting this website, I learned of the TSB for the 2009 and now there is even a TSB for the 2010. So far, the truck is running as I expect, and I'm hopeful that the mileage will improve. As someone who is 6'2

In my lifetime, I've owned many trucks from Chevy, Ford, and more. When I was a young kid, gas was only $.89 a gallon!

This truck has been amazing! I bought it used at 30,000 miles and it has been a reliable companion ever since. I've taken it on long trips from Indiana to Texas and even all the way to West Palm, Florida and back. I've made sure to take good care of it by changing the oil at 5,000 mile intervals and checking for any recalls at Toyota dealerships. The original tires and brakes are still going strong, but I did replace them with new Goodyear tires at 98,108 miles and new brake pads front and rear. I did have to replace a failing u-joint at 99,000 miles, but I found out there are 3 in the standard drive train and replaced all 3 to ensure it stays in top condition. Recently, I even towed a single axle RV camper weighing 3,500 lbs from Indiana to the Grand Canyon, through the New Mexico and Colorado Rocky Mountains, and it handled like a dream with the help of a trailer brake controller and an anti-sway kit. I couldn't be happier with this truck!

The Tacoma is a great truck, but unfortunately, there are a few issues that can be quite painful. Firstly, the ABS and traction control can be overwhelming, which was the reason for the loss of my first truck. Secondly, the heater motors have some issues, and it would be great if the truck's heater and A/C could work better. Even after driving for two hours with full A/C, I'm still sweating. Thirdly, the rear shocks piled up on me during the last cold snap, and now my truck is like an old suburban that never stops bouncing, and the rear springs squeak every time my truck moves. Lastly, there is a leak coming out from between the transmission and motor. All of these issues are nagging me and getting old! It's kind of sucky for 22000 KM.

I was really looking forward to my new Tacoma living up to the standards set by my old 1992 SR5 Toyota truck. Unfortunately, I have to say that it falls short. The steering wheel doesn't angle high enough to avoid my knee when I shift, and the center console storage compartment opens to the side instead of lifting back. I had to replace my passenger side seat belt because it was torn, and the gas mileage is disappointing for a manual (15-16). The engine can be quite loud above 2300 rpm, and it doesn't throttle down fast enough when shifting, resulting in an unpleasant whining sound. I also found that I had less storage space in the cab compared to my 1992 Toyota. I'm disappointed that I can't achieve the same level of satisfaction with this truck as I did with my previous one, which lasted me 250K.
