The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
  • VIN: 5NPEJ4J2XLH
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving back from Atlanta, GA to Pensacola, FL when we noticed our fuel level dropping significantly. We stopped in West Point, GA to see what was going on. We turned the car off and back on after 3 minutes and car made a weird vibration. Then the fuel level was rising back to normal but my wife was in the backseat with our [XXX] and she noticed the seat was rising and creating a lot of heat. We pulled over again and noticed it wasn't going down. Luckily there was a mechanic at this gas station and he informed us that the fuel tank expanded and to NOT drive the vehicle. We we're driving alongside my parents so we got in their car and drove back to Pensacola to get a truck and tow attachment cause a tow truck would've costed us $2,500 to tow back to Pensacola. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
  • VIN: 5NPEJ4J2XLH
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The component that failed is the fuel tank system. While driving, the fuel tank expanded, causing significant damage to the rear section of the vehicle. This issue resulted in the rear seat rising up, and the bottom rear seat cushion detaching from its securing clamps. The check engine light came on, and gas started leaking from the fuel cap. The fuel tank has moved upward by about 3 to 5 inches, no longer resting on the factory fuel tank straps. The sheet metal underneath the rear seat was crumpled, and the fuel pump access cover bent. The vehicle is currently at College Park Hyundai and is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of my children were significantly compromised. The loud popping noise startled us, and the fact that the rear seat lifted and detached posed a serious risk to the passengers in the back seat. Additionally, the gas leak created a fire and explosion hazard, putting all occupants of the vehicle and other drivers on the road at serious risk. This incident potentially violates the Fuel System Integrity (49 CFR 571.301) regulation, which ensures that a vehicle's fuel system is designed to prevent leaks and fire hazards. Moreover, the unexpected movement and detachment of the rear seat could be a breach of Occupant Protection (49 CFR 571.207 and 571.208), which govern the safety of seating systems and occupant crash protection. The issue has been confirmed by the service center at College Park Hyundai, where the vehicle is currently being inspected and evaluated. The vehicle is being inspected by the manufacturer’s authorized service center at College Park Hyundai. It has not yet been inspected by police or insurance representatives at this time. The check engine light came on immediately after the loud popping noise and the detachment of the rear seat cushion. Additionally, the gas gauge suddenly dropped to empty after the incident, even though the tank was not empty prior to the malfunction.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
  • VIN: KMHL54JJ3LA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Over the last 3 months at least a dozen times the 12v auxiliary battery is completely dead after parking the car outdoors for an hour or so. This poses a safety issue, especially at night because you cannot easily access the car. You have to fumble around trying to get the key hole cover off in order to use the key supplied in the fob. Once you get access, you then have to press the 12v reset button in order to get the car started. This issue has been reported on the Hyundai sonata forums since the introduction of the 2020 sonata. At this point the dealer has not been able to find the issues as they say it has been occur while they have the car. Asking for the problem to occur while they are watching is unrealistic . Their calls to Hyundai tech support has been useless as they claim to have not heard of this issue.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 5NPEJ4J28LH
  • Components: SEATS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I had the check engine light come on about 4 times in my 2020 Hyundai Sonata 1.6L this year in 2024. I took the car to a technician to get looked at each time it came on. The codes and bulletins kept pointing to fuel system issues. Each time, every service tech said it was a small issue and claimed to fix the issues. The final time a tech seen it lifted the rear seat and found out that the gas tank expanded and the back seat buckled up. The backseat metal frame is bent and messed up. I was flagged down by several drivers ?that noticed gasoline leaking from my driverside rear. My child and I were in dang? er and had to pull on the side of a major highway and stay several hours until someone picked us up. The problem has been confirmed by the hyuandi service center. They said another vehicle experienced this same issue. I was in fear for my life and my child's life because it could have caught fire and/or exploded.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
  • VIN: 5NPEF4JA5LH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Blower motor stopped working. Same issue has now happened on my 2021 Hyundai Sonata Limited. I have been waiting now three months to have my 2020 Sonata to be fixed. Hyundai technician said the wiring harness had a crack and it’s why my 2020 Sonata’s Blower motor stopped working. It’s now three months since they diagnosed and ordered the wiring harness but supposedly it’s still on back order and I’m left with a hot car this entire summer and possibly a cold car come this winter. Now it looks like I will have the same issue with my 2021 Hyundai Sonta Limited leaving me with two cars without A/C or Heat.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
  • VIN: 5NPEH4J20LH
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: There is an issue with the 2020+ Hyuandai sonatas and Kia K5 models. The valves in my gas tank had failed. Causing pressure and gas vapors to be trapped inside the tank. The pressure in my tank has swollen my gas tank to the point where it’s bent the metal frame underneath my backseat, lifting my backseat off its base. My car is a literal tricking time bomb because the tank will eventually burst. There’s also a strong smell of gas coming from underneath the backseat. There’s been a new story on this issue already. Kia has acknowledged the issue and did recalls. Hyundai has not. Many owners of the Sonata are having this same exact issue according to Reddit posts. I took my vehicle to the dealer, got it diagnosed, was quoted $2900+. I was told it was an extreme safety hazard due to the pressure in the tank and the gas leak. The tank has swollen so much that it’s pressing against the exhaust. I’m out of warranty and they expect me to pay out of pocket. I have no where near $3000. I use my car for work and have no choice but to drive it. Please help.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • VIN: 5NPEH4J24LH
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: (August 29th) My girlfriend and I were driving in my 2020 Sonata, when the check engine light turned on and my gas gauge dropped from being full to then only half way. About an hour later, driving back home we heard a loud pop as if something exploded. Next day, I took my car to the Autonation Hyundai dealership and after taking a look at my car they quoted me about $6,000 to get my fuel tank and charcoal canister replaced. Our safety was put at risk due to the fact that had the damage been any worse, it could have caused the car to possibly explode or give out while driving on the highway, and in turn would put many more lives at risk.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
  • VIN: 5NPEF4JA3LH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Improperly seated strip fuse High Resistance Connection on the IG-2 40amp blower motor fuse receptacle causing melting of plastic fuse box components and ultimately failure of blower motor circuit and potentially loss of other circuits. Loss of blower motor leads to loss of cabin HVAC as well as loss of front windshield defrost ability during adverse driving conditions. Not only does this pose a potential electrical fire hazard, but a safety hazard due to inability to clear windshield from loss of defrost feature. Brief research finds this to be a very common problem with these vehicles. Manufacturer's recommendation is complete replacement of engine bay wiring harness. Problem begins as intermittent, but leads to total circuit failure over time if not identified.

Negative 2020 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

  1. Tyler Dooley 2024-03-22

Update: It's been almost 3 years now and unfortunately, the problems have remained at a less than satisfactory level. However, I must say that I have had a less than ideal experience with Hyundai's customer service, which is almost as bad as their actual service departments. From day one, it has been a horrible experience. Personally, I don't think I will ever consider owning another Hyundai after this experience. It's disappointing to see the car starting to fall apart before even reaching 20K and 2 years.

The front passenger seat seems to be fixed and cannot be adjusted up or down. It's surprising that a Sonata Limited doesn't come with a six-way power seat. You were advised to buy a pillow for your wife, but we understand that this is not an ideal solution. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and we would be happy to explore other options with you.

  2. Weston Jacobi 2024-10-20

I love so much about my 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited! The technology and safety features are the best. If there's an at fault accident in this vehicle, it's important to be cautious and drive safely.

  3. Devyn Bauch 2024-10-14

It's a beautiful car! You get so many compliments on it. And not only that, it's also very roomy and comfortable. Plus, it drives fantastic!

  4. Lazaro Tromp 2024-10-10

Getting in and out of the car may be a bit of a challenge due to its lower height compared to an SUV. Additionally, be mindful of the low front spoiler when parking or pulling into spots or curbs. However, the car offers an excellent ride and spacious interior, while also providing good gas mileage. I have had no problems with my Hyundai Sonata and find it to be a comfortable and reliable car with great safety features.

Renewed an already awesome vehicle completely!
