2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.

Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.

Background

General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.

First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.

The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

  • VIN: 1GHDX13E23D

  • Summary: REFERENCE INVESTIGATION PE 11-014. THIS ISSUE IS NOT LIMITED TO 2005-2007 GM SUVS. ON 2/26/11, MY 2003 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE STALLED ON INTERSTATE I-75. I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER, BUT IT WAS A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN THE DARK, WITH FAMILY & KIDS IN THE CAR, WITH ICY, SNOWY ROADS. THE FUEL LEVEL READING INDICATED MORE FUEL AVAILABILITY THAN WHAT WAS ACTUALLY IN THE FUEL TANK. THE FUEL GAUGE WILL SHOWED BETWEEN 1/16 AND 1/8 OF A TANK, AND THERE WAS NOT A LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT. I HAD TO CALL FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN STALLED FOR A WHILE, THE LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT ACTIVATED - SO ROAD SERVICE FIRST TRIED PUTTING FUEL IN THE VEHICLE. WITH FUEL ADDED TO THE VEHICLE, IT STARTED RIGHT UP AND I WAS ABLE TO REFUEL THE VEHICLE AT THE NEXT EXIT. THE VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 100,000 MILE, AND IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION - THIS DEFECT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AT THIS POINT IN THE VEHICLE'S LIFE. A DEALER SERVICE GARAGE VERIFIED THAT THE FUEL LEVEL GAUGE IS DEFECTIVE, AND IT WOULD COST ABOUT $425 TO REPAIR. *TR

  • Summary: NOTICED DECREASE IN TIRE PRESSURE ON ONE TIRE THEN ON ALL. EXAMINATION OF RIM SHOWED EXTENSIVE CORROSION ON ALL RIMS BOTH EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR. LEAKAGE WAS SO BAD THAT I WAS FILLING THE TIRES DAILY. WENT TO TIRE STORE WHERE I PURCHASED THE TIRES TO HAVE THEM EXAMINED. SERVICE REP SAID IT WASN'T THE TIRES IT WAS THE CORRODED RIMS THAT WERE CAUSING THE PROBLEM. I HAD THE RIMS REPLACED (ALL 4) AND HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM SINCE THIS REPAIR. IN CONVERSATION WITH THE STORE REP HE COMMENTED THAT I WASN'T THE FIRST PERSON TO COME IN WITH THIS PROBLEM AND THAT HE HAD SEEM ~10 VEHICLES WITH THIS PROBLEM OVER THE PAST TWO MONTHS. IN FACT< AS SOON AS I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM IT SEEMED THAT HE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE CAUSE WAS. I HAVE KEPT THE RIMS FOR EVALUATION IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED.. *TR

THERE ARE 95,000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE. HOWEVER, I CONSIDER THIS A MANUFACTURING DEFAULT .. THE BOLT SHOULD NOT HAVE STRIPPED OUT OF THE ENGINE BLOCK. I QUESTION WHETHER THE OTHER ROCKER ARM BOLTS WILL STRIP ... GM DENIED ANY RESPONSIBILITY .. BECAUSE IT DIDN'T SHOW AT THE 35,000 MILE BUMPER TO BUMPER CHECK. *TR

Positive 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette car reviews

This is the second Olds mini van we have owned. The first was a 1990 which we gave to our son when it reached 135,000. By the way, the 1990 now has about 150,000 miles and is still going strong. The 2002 model has been improved in every way except for the body panels, which are not as ding or dent proof as the plastic panels on the 1990. The All Wheel Drive feature has proven to be worth the extra cost, especially this winter.

This Silhouette Premiere Edition is our first van ever after driving German cars for over 20 years. We absolutely love it! Ours is white with chrome mags and it always turns heads. Driving is fun, the interior is extremely comfortable, and the DVD system is perfect. Overall, we go for a drive more often than we ever did before.

    1) The car could benefit from better mileage. 2) The seats are incredibly comfortable. 3) This car is perfect for long distance trips with your family. 4) And let's not forget about the heated seats, which are especially cozy during the winter. 5) There's plenty of leg room to stretch out. 6) Although, some may find that there are too many buttons.

  4. Cordell Schroeder 2024-09-24

Very enjoyable to own and drive! Around town, we get a mileage of around 22 to 23 mpg, which is equal to or better than what we got with our previous Oldsmobile LS sedan. On the road, we get about 28 to 29 mpg, which is only about 2 mpg less than with our previous Olds LS sedan, a 1997 model. We really hope that GM continues to produce this kind of car for our next purchase, with equal or hopefully even better gas economy!

  5. Gino Powlowski 2024-09-05

Perfect car for family and loaded with great options. DVD with wireless headsets is great for trips. Mileage is great at 30mpg on the highway. It's a really great car!
