2013 Toyota Corolla problems
The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.
The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.
Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 2013 Toyota Corolla problems
The 2013 Toyota Corolla is known for several common problems, primarily related to airbags, steering, and brakes.
Airbag concerns are the most prevalent issue, with nearly 70 out of the NHTSA's 200 consumer complaints. Early consumer complaints were about airbags that failed to deploy in a collision, even after a recall for faulty airbag sensors. Two open investigations are ongoing, one for electrical overstress in the airbag control units and another for inflator rupture, which could result in airbags failing to deploy.
Steering issues are the second most common problem, with almost a quarter of the 200 owner complaints related to the steering wheel randomly locking up or losing power. This can cause the vehicle to veer left or right, making it difficult to stay in the lane. Although the rate of incidents is low, there were no investigations or recalls launched for this issue.
The third most common complaint is about the brakes, with 22 braking complaints on record. The issues vary, but recurring patterns include a squeaking noise and increased braking distance. This noise reportedly happens at any speed, and one owner described "a high pitched metal grinding noise when applying the brakes, despite the brake pads still having meat on them".
Other issues reported by owners include exhaust muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks, paint and trim problems, noises and leaks, electrical accessories, engine electrical, climate system, and in-car electronics.
It is important to note that the overall complaint number for the 2013 Toyota Corolla is relatively low, and the car holds a near-perfect four-star rating with the NHTSA and is a Top Safety Pick with the IIHS. Despite the airbag issues, the vehicle's overall reliability is considered good, with annual repairs averaging less than $400.

STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-16
- VIN: 2T1BU4EE5DC
- Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: On Monday, [XXX], I was at the CVS pharmacy drive through when the failure occurred. There was no accident and otherwise no warning before it happened. I attempted to pull out when I noticed the car was drifting and the steering was extremely stiff. I looked down to see that the airbag light and BRAKE light were both on. I coasted into a spot I happened to be aligned with. As I did, I felt the brakes and steering stiffen even more until they were almost 100% seized. (Kind of felt like I was fighting hydraulic fluid.) You guys are welcome to request to inspect the vehicle. I haven't been able to get it inspected, because the Toyota dealership wants me to pay a diagnostic fee to prove the airbag light came on due to the airbag assembly for them to be able to cover the work under the extended warranty for the airbag system. There was no accident. I thankfully didn't have any speed behind me. So, I just barely had enough brakes to stop. This also means that I didn't make an insurance claim or call the police. I did get a tow truck to come out with State Farm roadside assistance, though. The vehicle is at my father's house. We far as how this has affected us, I'm never buying a vehicle with electric steering again. At least with traditional power steering, if there's a failure, you can still steer the vehicle, even if it is difficult. If I had been coming down the winding, 6% grade from Lake Tahoe to Carson when it occurred a few nights ago, I wouldn't have been able to stop or steer; I probably would have went into the ravine. Had we been on the highway or even coming down the hill in Carson from[XXX] when I lost controls, we could both be dead right now. What's worse is I saw a forum where a bunch of people were talking about this happening to them: losing brakes and steering randomly, while actively driving. A few of them were only at 40k miles. In each case, airbags did not deploy. I think the sensor is causing the crashes sporadically. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2013 Corolla S 5-speed that I bought new from the dealer. This is actually my third Corolla and it replaced a 2009 model that was totalled in an accident. I've put 158,000 miles on the odometer over the past eight years and it's still running great! I mostly drive on the highway and still get around 38 MPG. The red paint still looks sporty for a simple sedan. As someone who travels a lot for work, this car has been a lifesaver. I don't need to impress anyone, so I value the economy and reliability of this car. It's also comfortable to drive, although passengers have complained about the small back seat (but I rarely haul passengers). The stereo sounds great and I love the Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music or podcasts from my phone. The trunk has adequate storage space for suitcases and briefcases. I've never needed a tow truck and have only had two repairs: 1) I had to replace the front bumper in 2018 because the plastic clips on the old one had snapped from hitting too many parking curbs over time causing the bumper to flap around at the front corners. 2) In 2021 at 150k miles I had to replace the alternator. Other than that, I've only done the usual recommended maintenance at Toyota intervals - fluid changes, a couple batteries, tires, and brakes. I know some people complain that the 4 cyl engine is under-powered, but I haven't had any issues with it paired with the 5 speed manual. Bottom line - This car has been amazing to me, it's been a great value, and I've saved a ton on gas compared to my old Ford Taurus. I plan to watch the odometer roll over 300,000 some day! Thanks for listening to my story.

I leased a 2013 Corolla LE, but I must say that my wife's previous leases, the 2006 and 2009 Corollas, were better in terms of comfort and agility. Although the newer model has some improvements, such as the USB port, it lacks the nimbleness and comfort of the older models. However, the lease was more affordable than other options like the Focus, Cruze, or Sentra. If you're considering a Corolla, I recommend looking for a used model from 2007 to 2010 and not worrying about Bluetooth or USB ports, as they are not essential. In my opinion, the model has regressed and the ride is quite dull. I regret not considering my children's needs, as there is not enough room in the back seat for them.

To be honest, while the interior of the Corolla may not be the most modern and the engine power may not be as responsive as some competitors, it is still a great vehicle to have in your garage. I really appreciate the Hyundai Elantra's stylish interior and exterior. During my test drive of the Elantra, everything felt good, but I didn't get the sense of longevity that I was looking for. The Civic is also a great choice, but to match the standards of the Corolla S, I might as well buy a Camry SE. In my opinion, the Corolla S is the best choice here. While some may find the appearance boring, my Corolla grabs attention on the highway and looks similar to the 06-11 Camry S, which was the top-selling model during its years on the market.

I traded in my 2009 Corolla for a new 2013 model due to some issues I had. I'm really enjoying driving this vehicle and I'm excited for a road trip. The 2013 Corolla drives like a luxury vehicle compared to the 2009 version. The pep is not spectacular but adequate, and I love some of the standard items that have been added to help Toyota keep up with the American car makers.

I purchased my 2013 Corolla S with a manual transmission in December 2018 with 75k miles on it. Since then, my family and I have taken it on numerous road trips and it has never let us down. This car has been a reliable and safe choice for us. The manual transmission makes driving it even more enjoyable and I plan on keeping this car for years to come. While it may not be a luxury brand like Mercedes or Lexus, it still gets great gas mileage and will reliably take you from point A to B. Once I pay it off, I plan on upgrading to a Tundra. I highly recommend keeping up with regular oil and filter changes every 5k miles and using Mobil 1 full synthetic extended performance oil to ensure your car runs smoothly for years to come.

I was considering both the Civic LX and the Corolla LE, but ultimately decided on the Corolla. The dealer I worked with gave me a decent deal on the car and my trade-in, and the 0% financing option sealed the deal. However, I have had a few issues with the car, including two trips to the garage before even reaching 500 miles due to issues with the vvt-i gears. I am also experiencing a hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear, which is concerning. In hindsight, I may have been better off choosing the Civic.

It sounds like you had some challenges with your 2013 car, but it still managed to make it to 159,000 miles which is impressive. It did require some repairs over its lifetime, including brake and suspension work, as well as a significant repair towards the end of your ownership. On the other hand, your 2008 Hyundai Sonata was even more reliable and managed to reach 200K miles. While it also had some issues, they were not as severe as the ones you experienced with your 2013 car.

I recently purchased a 2013 Corolla LE after trading in my old car. Although I initially wanted a Civic, I ultimately decided on the Corolla due to its lower insurance and retail price. However, I now realize that I should have done more research on the car and its competitors before making my decision. While the car rides well and has a very quiet cabin with good fuel economy, I find it to be a bit boring and the styling looks outdated for a 2013 model. Despite this, it gets the job done. I do have some concerns about its resale value, as I have noticed many of these Corollas for sale after only 1 or 2 years. While some of its competitors may offer more features for the price, I still believe that the Corolla is a reliable and practical choice. It's worth noting that Toyota is planning to redesign the Corolla next year, which may impact its value in the future.

I recently decided to try out the Corolla and bought a new one from the dealership. Unfortunately, I have had a negative experience with it. In certain lighting conditions, such as overcast or in the evenings, the mismatched metal panels are very noticeable. The front fender does not match the hood and front doors, the front doors do not match the rear doors, and the rear doors do not match the quarter panels. When I brought this to the attention of the dealership, they acknowledged the issue and contacted corporate Toyota. However, corporate Toyota stated that this is a common issue with white Corollas and is therefore considered normal. I went through arbitration, as required by Toyota before going to court, but they also did not consider it a defect. I want to clarify that I am not referring to the mismatched bumpers, but rather the metal panels. If you want to avoid feeling like you have been taken advantage of, I would suggest avoiding white Corollas.

I bought this car used 3 years ago with 24,000 miles and it has been a reliable little car with a nice appearance. I have put 61,000 miles on it and have not experienced any reliability issues. Toyota's service has been great. However, I must say that this car is not the best driving car I have ever owned (I am 64 years old). When I purchased it, I knew it was a basic car and nothing more. Toyota and other car manufacturers should be more careful when releasing a car to the public with such sloppy steering. Before anyone thinks I am being overly critical, my previous car was a Mercury Grand Marquis, which is not exactly a driver-oriented vehicle. The car is suitable for short in-town trips and nothing more. Longer trips on the highway require constant course correction, or you will find yourself heading for the shoulder or across the center line. This makes the car extremely tiring to drive. I have driven the newer models '14 and '16, and there is no difference. Even at my age, one can still learn something. My advice is not to buy a car that is uncomfortable if you are in it for more than 2 hours, and make sure it is capable of tracking straight without constant input and has enough power to get out of its own way.
