The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.
The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.
GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

- Summary: Headlight's,taillight's,turn signals stop working whenever they want.It's pretty scary to lose your headlight's when your driving at night.There's nothing i can do about it,except to sit wherever it happend and wait for them to come back on.My wife was following me one day and told me my brakelight's and turn signal stopped working and started to work again,she said this happened a couple time's at the same red light.There a couple of thing's (electrical)inside the vehicle that don't work anymore but i really dont care about them.To get the odometer to work i have to knock pretty hard on the plastic cover that cover's the instrument cluster,sometimes it stay's on,most of the time it wont stay on.The DIC (driver control center) doesn't work anymore.I cant even get to it.The speakers on the left side of the vehicle dont work anymore.I thought i would tell you about the inside also because it could be part of the problem.All of this happened when i was driving home from my daughter's two night's ago.I bought this vehicle about three or four's year's ago,and i had no problem's with it untill the other night.The person i bought it from is a good friend of mine.He said he never had a problem with it,plus i have been in this vehicle countless times,that's why i bought it. MY ENVOY IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND IS DEALER SERVICED EVEN THOUGH IT HAS HIGH MILEAGE. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 2006 AND UP FOR THIS TYPE ISSUE, WHY WAS THE 2004 MODEL YEAR NOT LOOKED AT? THERE ARE OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH LOWBEAM HEADLIGHTS. FUSEBOX UNDERHOOD IS LABELED TO CONFUSE OWNER AND RELAYS NOT DESCRIBED WELL IN OWNERS MANUAL. THERE IS NO RELAY LISTED FOR LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS. HEADLIGHT DRIVER MODULE IS A KNOW FAILURE COMPONENT. GM ALSO CHANGED ONSTAR TO DIGITAL SYSTEM LEAVING GM CARS LIKE MINE WITH ANALOG ONSTAR UNSERVICABLE AND REQUIRES EXPENSIVE UPGRADE. HEADLIGHTS GOING DARK WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT IS A DANGER AND VEHICLE SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO FALL UNDER RECALL FOR 2006 MODELS AS WELL. SLIGHT ACCIDENT, RAN OFF ROAD INTO DITCH AND CAUSED LIGHT DAMAGE. VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN, BUT NEEDED SOME REPAIR.

I WAS TOLD BOTH SERVICE REPS THAT THIS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME AND THEY WOULD CONFIRM THAT IT WAS DUE TO WEAR AND NOT A DEFECT. BUT IN YOU MANUAL THERE IS NO PROVISIONS TO INSPECT THE SHIFTING CABLE WITH IS A SAFETY PROBLEM WHICH GM AND THE DEALER ARE AWARE OF BUT IGNORE AND TELL YOU HAVE TO BUY A NEW CABLE FOR $75.00 INSTEAD OF SUPPLYING THE BUSHING THAT HAS BEEN WORN OUT THAT IS PRESS FIT INTO THE CABLE THE ONLY DEFECT ON THE CABLE IS THE BUSHING WHICH COST AT MOST $3.00 AND A VERY EASY FIT. I HAVE A BUICK RAINER WITH THE SAME DEFECT VIN[XXX] THE WAY IT WAS REPAIRED WAS THE SHIFT LEVER ON THE TRANS PIN WAS REMOVER AND A BOLT AND NUT WERE PUT IN PLACE OF THE OEM PIN ON SHIFTER AND IT WAS BOLTED TO THE SHIFTER END OF THE CABLE NO OEM REPAIR THIS VEHICLE WAS SOLD TO ME BY GM EAGLE BUICK. I OWN 2 GM VEHICLES WITH THE SAME SAFETY PROBLEM. MORE CURIOUS AS TO WHY THERE'S A DEADLINE FOR A RECALL (IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH A VEHICLE THAT IS SOLD THEN IT SHOULD BE FIXED - ESPECIALLY IF IT PUTS OTHERS AT RISK).

- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 GMC ENVOY. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE TAILGATE LATCH AND MOTOR FAILED. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE TAILGATE MOTOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE AIR COMPRESSOR FAILED TO INFLATE THE AIR BAGS EVENLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO W-K CHEVROLET BUICK GMC CADILLAC (LOCATED AT 3310 W BROADWAY BLVD, SEDALIA, MO 65301, (660) 826-8320), BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, VIBRATION AND HEAT MAY CAUSE THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP BULB TO LOOSEN IN ITS SOCKET. IF THIS OCCURS, THE BULB MAY FLICKER AND EVENTUALLY BECOME INOPERATIVE.
- Consequence: AN INOPERATIVE BRAKE LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION OF STOPPING TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES, AND AN INOPERATIVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION TO TURN TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES. BOTH OF THESE FAILURES CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

It's good and reliable. You won't regret getting it. This SUV can handle anything you throw at it. It heats and cools without any issues and gets some of the best gas mileage I've seen for an SUV. I looked at several other models, including the Pilot, Trailblazer, Yukon, Explorer, Durango, and 4Runner, but this vehicle tops them all. It runs perfectly and, despite being an American-made car, hardly shows it. Cheers to the rebirth of American quality cars!

We bought this SUV because we needed room for large carpools and this SUV can do it. We had an SUV prior to this and while the mileage is not good in any of them, we can get 12MPG local and up to 23MPG on the highway. The numbers when we bought the car are a little bit off, I would say. We haven't had the car long enough to see how it holds up, but we did get a four-year warranty from the dealer along with a lot of great rebates that brought the car down to around 31K with DVD and headphones. It can be a bit hard to park, but the interior is great with right and left heater A/C. The digital controls in the steering wheel for display, heater/AC, and radio are good. All in all, we are very happy with our purchase!

The Envoy sits up higher than most, which is a plus. I found that it has a smooth ride and handles quite nicely on rougher roads. On snow and slush, it controls really well, even with the extra length in the XL model. I owned an Astek for 3 years and loved the way it handled, but I believe the Envoy is going to be everything and more for the money.
