The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.
It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

It is a serous distraction, and now prevents me from transporting a passenger. This has been going on since June 2024, and dealer refuses to look at car due to recall. I was even willing to pay myself to make the repair. No one will touch it. The remedy was originally set for the summer time, then end of 3rd quarter 2024. The incident happened on a Sunday afternoon and interstate was extremely busy with weekend traffic. My wife was extremely lucky not to be involved in a serious accident. - Tire has not been inspected by anyone other than the car dealer - If the tire pressure warning light came on it wasn't noticed. I'm the third owner of this vehicle. When I bought it, it had 60k miles on it. Now, it has 150k miles and it's still going strong. I've taken it on rough dirt roads, through countless snowstorms, and on numerous road trips of over 1000 miles. Despite all of this, all I've had to do is change the oil and tires. Toyota really knows how to make a reliable motor and powertrain, which is why they dominate other companies in terms of reliability. This vehicle is like a cockroach that just won't quit!

When you purchase a Toyota, you can expect it to last for 200,000 miles or more, and our RAV4 is well on its way there. We have had zero major repair issues (knock on wood), and it gets strong highway mileage of 30MPG. The great riding position makes it our favorite SUV ever. We previously owned a Highlander, which was also outstanding, but the RAV4 is a little bit less and a little bit easier. It is easier to park and easier on the wallet. I would buy another one tomorrow. In the three years that we have owned the RAV4, we have only experienced minor issues, such as a mis-signaling tire pressure warning and the failure of the radio system, which was a bit annoying. Apparently, the radio issue is something that is well known in the Toyota owner message boards. We replaced it with one from an electronics store for $250, and it is better and more current than what came with the car.

My Mom bought this car used in 1998 and has put a lot of miles on it, but it has never had any major problems. It's a great car and I would definitely recommend it to anyone, especially with gas prices being the way they are (27-29 mpg).

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my recent experience with my new 2023 RAV4 Limited. As a long-time Toyota buyer, I was excited to try out this new model. While I appreciate the driver safety features like Blind Spot Monitoring and Lane Departure warnings, I have to admit that I've found the ride to be a bit rough and the engine noise bothersome. However, my biggest challenge has been with the Multi-Media display and the Multi-Information Display. Despite spending hours studying the owners manuals, I still find them difficult and confusing to use. As a result, I've mostly given up trying to use them. While I'm disappointed with my purchase, I still have faith in Toyota and hope to find a better fit in the future. Thank you for listening to my experience.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Rav4. I purchased it brand new in 2003 and have driven it for 156,000 miles. Recently, I noticed some sluggish acceleration while trying to merge into traffic. After doing some research online and reading reviews, I discovered that the transmission needs to be replaced due to a faulty ECM. Unfortunately, my car is now 6,000 miles over the 150,000 mile warranty that Toyota extended. The repair will cost around $5,000, which is a bit of a bummer. I was hoping to drive my car for another 50,000 miles, but it looks like that won't be possible. Despite this setback, I still believe that Toyota builds reliable cars. What do you think? Thankfully, Toyota Care came to our rescue and sent someone with a jump box. Although the lights came on, the ignition still wouldn't turn over. We tried to get it towed, but due to the dead battery, we couldn't switch the gear to neutral. Unfortunately, the car also makes loud grinding noises due to the fuel pump, and there is now an SRS Airbag issue. It's disappointing to learn that Toyota and the dealerships knew about the battery issue, and even offered a free replacement at 15k miles, yet it wasn't resolved. Overall, I would advise staying away from this car.

The car has plenty of storage and the AC blows very cold. Overall, it's a great SUV that is perfect for those who prioritize reliability and affordability. For those who have been complaining about the cup holders, a simple solution is to take the rubber insert out. Those were only there so that one could use a can if they wanted to. Additionally, I appreciate that it came standard with electronic fuel economy readings. My family has been driving Toyotas since we owned a 1979 Supra, and they have always been amazingly reliable.
