It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

It is a serous distraction, and now prevents me from transporting a passenger. This has been going on since June 2024, and dealer refuses to look at car due to recall. I was even willing to pay myself to make the repair. No one will touch it. The remedy was originally set for the summer time, then end of 3rd quarter 2024. If you're experiencing the transmission problem that's been going around, I'd recommend taking your car to a Toyota dealer. Luckily, there's a bulletin that came out on August 15th that fixes the issue! It's a simple reprogramming of the computer that takes about 1.5 hours to complete, including a road test. I had mine done and it's all fixed now!

You're getting about 25.5 mpg overall, which is great! Your gas mileage has even improved by 3 mpg since you moved near the expressway. The cabin is fairly quiet and the ride is decent, making for a comfortable driving experience. The seats fold down flat, providing over 73 cf of space, which is perfect for all your needs. I love that the sound system reads back texts aloud and that the bluetooth is easy to pair and works flawlessly. Braking is excellent, even on wet pavement, and I'm glad to hear that you haven't experienced any wind noise. The only downside is that the interior plastic scratches a bit easily, but that's a minor issue. It's great to hear that you're planning on leasing a new 2018 Rav4 LE come May, which has all the safety features that were missing from the 2015 Rav4 LE.

My wife and I recently test-drove the RAV-4. We found the ride quality and performance to be satisfactory. However, we both felt that the interior design was a bit generic and lacked character when compared to other models such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Honda CR-V. While the trunk space was adequate, the driver's seat felt cramped and the back seats may not be very comfortable for full-size adults, unless you have the physique of a female gymnast. I want to emphasize that I have nothing against Toyota, as they make great vehicles. In fact, I own a Tundra which I will cherish forever. However, I believe that Toyota engineers could have done better with the redesign. It's more like a base hit.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my new car. Since the end of January, I've put almost 9k miles on it (I drive a lot!). Before this, I was driving a 16-year-old Acura TL with 250k miles on it. I hate to say it, but I actually prefer my old car over the RAV4. However, I needed something new. While the car is a bit loud and the engine can be a bit noisy when accelerating, I still get good gas mileage, which is a plus. I have noticed some rattling noises, but I can't pinpoint them. I read in a review that someone else heard a 'mooing' noise, which I started hearing last week. I plan to ask the dealer about it. Overall, the car is cute and the backseats lay flat, which is convenient. Although, if I could go back in time, I would reconsider buying this car. But that's just my personal opinion. We purchased the RAV4 in February 2006. While it works very well in the city, the highway ride can be quite noisy. Although the design is nice, we have had some issues with the quality of this vehicle. After the first car wash, we noticed a lot of white paint chips on the front hood. Soon after, at 36,000 miles, we had to spend two thousand dollars on a variety of repairs, including rear shocks, front brakes, intermediary steering shaft, belt tensioner, and dash glove compartment door. At 74,500 miles, we noticed heavy vibration and noise when stopping at traffic lights, and the CD changer only works occasionally. The technicians at the dealership find all of this normal, but if this is the case, then TOYOTA IS NOT FOR US.
