It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

It is a serous distraction, and now prevents me from transporting a passenger. This has been going on since June 2024, and dealer refuses to look at car due to recall. I was even willing to pay myself to make the repair. No one will touch it. The remedy was originally set for the summer time, then end of 3rd quarter 2024. My wife was extremely lucky not to be involved in a serious accident. - Tire has not been inspected by anyone other than the car dealer - If the tire pressure warning light came on it wasn't noticed. '98 Rav4, with only 70K miles, is a great car that runs, feels, and looks great. People who know about old cars always stop, stare, and compliment my ride. Several have even asked if I bought it overseas, but no, I bought it right here in the good ole USA. I found everything I needed in this oldie but goodie. My kids think it's cute and they love it, and I know I made the right decision. And did I mention it's in mint condition? A solid 9 out of 10!

I always try to maintain a speed of 62 mph on the highway with cruise control on, which helps me achieve a fuel efficiency of at least 30 mph. Initially, I thought that the fuel efficiency was slightly lower than my 2015 RAV4 LE, but after I changed my driving habits, I realized that I was mistaken. The vehicle is comfortable to ride in and is relatively quiet. I had to make an emergency stop once, and the vehicle performed exceptionally well. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this vehicle.

I'm so glad I chose this car! The ride and transmission are incredibly smooth, and the appearance is stunning with its stylish lines. Everything works perfectly, and I'm looking forward to many years of driving pleasure. My husband is also excited to drive it on occasion. The only issue I've had is that the front seat belts are a bit difficult to connect since they're so far back into the seat, but seat belt extenders solved the problem. I do have some concerns about the many electronic options the car has, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of them with time.

I have two Gen 1 2L Manual AWD Ravs, but this one is definitely my favorite. It has more room, storage space, and is more comfortable. Additionally, it has more power, is quieter, and has better fuel efficiency, getting around 560 km on just 50l of gas. The extra 0.4L really makes a difference. I especially appreciate the engine compartment layout, which provides much more room to work on the motor. The only downside is the drive by wire accelerator pedal, which can be a bit tricky to control at low speeds. Unfortunately, the transmission also vibrates in 5th gear under load, which is a shame. Overall, though, I'm really happy with this car!

The camshaft was replaced at 90k miles, while the manual transmission exhibited vibrations and noise at 80k miles, which the dealer could not identify. The transmission started slipping out of 5th gear at 100k miles, necessitating a replacement. Despite being driven gently by one owner and receiving regular preventative maintenance, these issues arose. However, all necessary repairs were made with confidence and expertise.

We purchased the car in mid-August and we are really enjoying the Blind Spot Monitor option. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the music files on a USB drive can be played back directly, which has been very convenient. Additionally, we appreciate the memory function of the driver's seat. However, we have noticed that the ride can be quite bumpy, even more so than our 20-year-old Corolla. We have also experienced an abnormal sound coming from the air outlets when switching the air flow from the setting of upper body and feet to the setting of upper body. While we are concerned about the long term reliability of the vehicle, we remain optimistic and hope to address these issues with the dealership.

I just purchased this vehicle and although I haven't owned many SUVs, I think it has great safety features for a base model. The vehicle handles and drives very well in windy or crosswind days, barely feeling like it's being pushed. The headlights have auto-dim, which works pretty well for oncoming traffic. There are ECO/Normal and sport transmission options, which are good. However, the gas mileage for a smaller SUV is poor. The Bluetooth and sound system are not the best, and I have adjusted what I could, but callers keep asking me to repeat myself and speak up. It's annoying, and I have checked the in-call speaker volume in the settings. The voice system does not understand names well either, and I set up the recognition too. So, I'm fighting with that constantly. The stock stereo sounds low even though I have adjusted it. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay and XM radio are not an option on this model. There is always a hollow wind noise coming from the rear passenger side area, maybe it's a seal somewhere? Otherwise, the cabin would be quiet. There is plenty of room for the kids in the back. Although there are some cons, such as the rear liftgate being very heavy to close manually and wheel covers on a 23/24K vehicle, I appreciate the reliability factor. I hope that the trade-in value holds up before the factory warranty is up because I plan on trading it in before then. Thank you for reading!

I recently purchased a 2010 Rav4 base 4x4 from Carmax upon my return from overseas. I needed a reliable and roomy SUV quickly for a long road trip, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with my purchase. Our vehicle is a RAV4 4-Cyl Limited, which we purchased from Colonial Toyota of Lincoln RI. This is my wife's daily driver. After 50k miles, we have encountered the following issue: Technical Service Bulletin (TSP) T-SB-0094-11. About a month ago, the engine light came on. After running an oil consumption test on our vehicle, the service manager informed us that it burned 1 quart of engine oil in 1000 miles, which they said was within specifications. However, I am not convinced, as my 2003 Honda Accord LX with 165,000 miles has never had engine oil consumption issues. Additionally, the engine output power seems to be declining, and the engine noise within the cabin is worse than my Accord!
