It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

I was even willing to pay myself to make the repair. No one will touch it. The remedy was originally set for the summer time, then end of 3rd quarter 2024. The incident happened on a Sunday afternoon and interstate was extremely busy with weekend traffic. My wife was extremely lucky not to be involved in a serious accident. - Tire has not been inspected by anyone other than the car dealer - If the tire pressure warning light came on it wasn't noticed. There were no symptoms or warnings prior to the failure.

I was torn between the Rav4 and the CRV, but ultimately chose the CRV because it offered more features for the same price. However, after driving it for 45 minutes on a long trip, I found it to be very uncomfortable and knew I couldn't keep it. I went to Autonation Toyota and they not only gave me a discount on the Rav4, but also helped me return the CRV to Honda. I absolutely love my Rav4 and had a comfortable ride on a long trip to NY. This is my fourth Toyota, and I must say, it's the best one yet! The controls are silky smooth, with very subtle shifts, and the overall refinement is well above average cars. Even my 80 pound Dobe can stand up straight in the back! While the four-cylinder provides more than enough power here in WI, six would be desirable in mountains. And have you seen it with the 18-inch wheels and flares? It looks awesome! It makes my Tacoma seem primitive. I drove a new CRV and it just didn't compare.

I recently purchased a 98 Toyota RAV4 AWD with a differential lock and it has been a great investment. Despite having 295,000 miles on it, I have had no issues with it and have already put 6,000 miles on it in just 2 months. I bought it from my neighbor who had taken great care of it over the last 11 years. Although the CD player and cruise control don't work, I don't mind because it's such a fun and reliable car to drive. The AWD system is impressive and works seamlessly, making it easy to drive in any weather condition. The road noise can be a bit bothersome, but it's a minor issue compared to all the great features this car has to offer. If you're in the market for a reliable and capable off-road vehicle, I highly recommend the Toyota RAV4 AWD as long as it has been well-maintained. It's definitely worth the investment!

Our 2001 Rav $ has been a beloved member of our family since it was purchased new by my parents in Florida. Although they didn't need AWD in Florida, they opted for a 2WD version. When we brought the Rav up north in 2006, it proved to be a reliable and sturdy car, performing well in the snow thanks to its good tire treads. Over the years, we've had to replace the usual parts such as the battery, tires, and wiper blades, but recently we replaced the shift cable and it's still going strong. We're proud to say that this car has been through 4 drivers and has never let us down. It's rust-free and solid, a true testament to its quality.

Pro: The new D4S generation of engine is fantastic. The exterior styling is attractive and the interior has been updated for better ergonomics and technology. It still offers the same useful utility. Cons: The steering can feel vague and is a noticeable step down from the previous generation in 2018. The lumbar support on the driver's seat is inferior and can be painfully noticeable on long trips.

Hi there! I noticed that this model has 4 O2 sensors, but it seems like they're not working properly. Every time I go to get tags, I have to replace them at $250.00 each. Additionally, the check engine light has been on since I've owned the vehicle. I can reset the engine light, but it comes right back on. I took it to the Toyota dealer for a recall, but unfortunately, there's still no fix.
