Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.
It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4 is a popular and reliable compact SUV, but like all vehicles, it has some common problems reported by owners. Here are the most common issues with the Toyota RAV4, based on data from real owners and various sources:
- Evaporative System Issue: One of the most common problems with the Toyota RAV4 is a faulty evaporative system (EVAP) vapor canister. This issue can result in the Check Engine light illuminating, which typically requires replacing the entire vapor canister, including the vent valves. This problem is known to affect up to the 2016 models and can be an expensive fix.
- Catalytic Converter Software Issue: Previously, there was a software issue that would incorrectly report an issue with the catalytic converter when there actually wasn't one. This issue affected older models, but Toyota released a software update to correct it, so it should no longer be an issue.
- Oxygen Sensor Failure: Another common problem is the failure of oxygen sensors, which can cause the Check Engine light to turn on. This issue can be costly to fix, as some owners have reported replacing one sensor only to have to replace another one shortly after. This problem is known to affect models up to 2014.
- Transmission Issues: There have been a handful of reports of transmission problems with the 2020 Toyota RAV4, including stumbling transmissions, delayed acceleration, and leaky transmissions. While not a widespread issue, it's something to be aware of if you're considering a 2020 model.
- Steering Wheel Issues: Some RAV4 owners have reported strange noises coming from the steering rack, such as clicking sounds when turning the steering wheel at full lock. In more serious cases, some people reported the steering wheel failing altogether.
- Water Pump Failure: Failure in the water pump on the RAV4 has been reported by drivers, usually accompanied by loud noises coming from the engine. This issue requires replacing the water pump to avoid larger problems.
- Gearbox Issues: Slipping gears and a slight whining noise coming from the gearbox are two common RAV4 complaints. Toyota has tried to address this issue by expanding the warranty to cover more mileage.
- Navigation/Audio Apparatus Installation: Some RAV4 owners have found fault with the way the navigation/audio apparatus has been installed, with the position of the screen being less than user-friendly due to sunlight glare.
- Engine Light Coming On: RAV4 owners have reported that their 'check engine' light comes on during drives, typically at lower speeds. This issue is hard to diagnose and could be due to a number of factors, but it's always advised to get your vehicle checked out to be on the safe side.
It's important to note that the Toyota RAV4 has an excellent reputation in terms of reliability, with a reliability score of 4.0 out of 5.0, according to RepairPal. However, it's always a good idea to be aware of potential issues when considering purchasing a vehicle, especially when buying a used model.
What is the common problem with Toyota RAV4?
But with more used RAV4s in the market — some with hundreds of thousands of miles on the odometer — some of these hiccups will be unavoidable. The RAV4's issues include excessive oil consumption, steering wheel problems, lagging transmissions, fuel system problems, and electrical complications, among other troubles.

Vehicle year: 2017
Firstly, I would like to share my experience with the 2013 Ford Escape SEL, which I owned before purchasing the Toyota RAV4. Although the Escape had more options for the price point, I found the RAV4's appearance to be very inviting. The 2017 RAV4 only offers a 4 cylinder engine, while the 2016 model offered a 6 cylinder. However, the SE comes with ECO/Sport modes, which I find very useful. In ECO mode, I am getting about 29mpg, and in Sport mode, the engine is more peppy. The power is more than enough for merging onto highways and passing, in my opinion. The interior is quiet, and the road/engine noise into the cabin is minimal. The SE's suspension is a little more stiff than I would like, but it's still okay. There is almost no vehicle lean going around corners, and the electric steering feels fine. The stereo is great, and the cabin speakers are more than adequate, even better than my Escape's. The back seat is spacious, and the cargo area is fine. The LED trim on the headlights and tail lights looks very nice, and there is great visibility at night with just low beams on. The only thing I wish I had is a memory button for the driver's seat and a power passenger seat. Other than that, it's a nice vehicle, but I only have a little over 550 miles on it so far. After owning my RAV4 for 13 months and accumulating 32K miles, I have noticed a few things that could be improved. The front cup holders are in terrible locations, and I have spilled drinks due to this, which is very irritating. The seats, both front and back, could use more padding, as they are not comfortable on long drives. The dash lights only go so bright, which is not enough for me, and it appears that others reviewing this vehicle feel the same way. The steering wheel needs to tilt more and telescope further out. However, the gas mileage is great for an AWD, and I average 27 in the Winter and 29 in the Summer.Legroom and headroom are very good. As someone who is 6'-4

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Limited model of Rav4. It has so many great features like floor mats, heated front seats, tinted windows, leather seats, and it looks amazing! The Rav4 is the perfect size for carrying all sorts of items and it's such a smooth ride with AWD (All Wheel Drive). This is actually my third Rav4 and even though I looked at other used cars, I just couldn't resist staying with the Rav4 over other vehicles in the same class. It also has great clearance from the ground, which makes it perfect for travelling in snow, and it's high enough above the road to avoid any truck spray when I pass them in bad weather. Plus, it gets reasonable mileage at 23-28 MPG and Toyotas are known for holding their resale value. Thanks for listening!

Vehicle year: 2007
I was looking for a vehicle that had a proven track record, more cargo area than a small sedan, decent power and fuel economy. The RAV4 fits the bill perfectly. The V6 is strong without compromising fuel economy too much. The ride is firm yet comfortable, and the handling is agile and predictable. The interior and exterior are stylish and driver-friendly. I average 23 mpg while commuting, which includes a mix of expressway and stop-go traffic. On trips, I get 27.5 mpg while averaging 70-80 mph. For me, it's practical yet still fun to drive.

Vehicle year: 2005
After months of research, I decided to go for the RAV4. I am really happy with my decision and my friends and colleagues are impressed too. It's zippy, good on mileage (22mpg city/30mpg highway), compact, and has great pick-up (better than my previous v6 dodge intrepid). It's great value for the price, with great looks and performance backed by Toyota's reputation. I believe it's the best compact SUV on the market. The safety features, especially the side curtain airbags, helped me get good insurance rates and gave me peace of mind, of course.

Your ECM will cause issues with your transmission. I had to purchase a new transmission and was informed that my ECM was reprogrammed, but the problem persisted. It is quite alarming when your car slows down and drags while crossing an intersection, causing you to be jolted around inside. This experience has left me with a negative impression of Toyota, and I am now exploring other car options. It is frustrating because the car was flawless until this issue arose.

Vehicle year: 2002
I see that you purchased this car in 2002 and it has 56,000 miles on it today. The leather seats are ergonomic and provide great back support. Additionally, the seats are removable and the car has great handling. While there have been some issues with the interior rattling and the 2.0 engine being a bit wimpy, there have been no major engine problems. The dealership (not Toyota) recalled and reprogrammed the ECM (computer) for the transmission, but as of today, there have been no problems. I understand that there are some scary forums on RAV Transmission computer problems, but I want to assure you that the car is running smoothly. The thermostat needed replacement, and there have been some concerns with side crash tests. Additionally, there has been some rear suspension noise and corrosion of the AWD system, which makes alignment a bit of a nightmare. Overall, I appreciate your honest feedback, and I hope that you continue to enjoy your car. Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

The 5-speed transmission failed just as the 70,000 mile warranty expired. Despite the dealer's lack of assistance, a local repair shop was able to fix it for only $900, a fraction of the $3,300 quoted by the dealer. Based on this experience, it is not recommended to purchase the 5-speed option.

The SUV's rough ride and crash avoidance features may not always be reliable. Additionally, the TPM system has been reported to malfunction. Despite these setbacks, I had a flat tire and contacted Toyota roadside assistance. Although they initially suggested towing the vehicle to the dealership for a new tire, I was able to have it repaired with a simple plug. Overall, my experience with the SUV has been disappointing.

Vehicle year: 2024
The vehicle has its pros and cons. While it offers a fairly smooth ride and responsive steering, it is underpowered by at least 50 HP and struggles up hills. It gets 34 mpg and brakes just fine. Overall, it does most things well. However, it is frustrating that the mirrors are not heated, especially for those living in colder climates like the North-East. Despite this, the vehicle is more reliable than my old VW Passat TDI. It would be great if the company spent more time refining their product in the real world, rather than just on paper.

Vehicle year: 2006
I purchased this car brand new from the dealership and they handled all of the maintenance. Unfortunately, the engine blew this year while the car still had under 90,000 miles on it. Despite following the recommended maintenance schedule and never driving the car too hard, I was faced with an estimated repair cost of $6,000 to $7,000. As a 63-year-old female, I was understandably upset. However, after expressing my concerns to the dealership and involving the factory, they ended up covering most of the cost, leaving me with only around $1,500 to pay. While my faith in Toyota has been shaken, I appreciate their efforts to make things right. It's possible that the 2006 model year was affected by the previous management regime's lack of focus on reliability, but I hope that Toyota has since addressed these issues. Just be cautious when making your own car purchasing decisions.
