Toyota Rav4 problems

The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.
It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4 is a popular and reliable compact SUV, but like all vehicles, it has some common problems reported by owners. Here are the most common issues with the Toyota RAV4, based on data from real owners and various sources:
- Evaporative System Issue: One of the most common problems with the Toyota RAV4 is a faulty evaporative system (EVAP) vapor canister. This issue can result in the Check Engine light illuminating, which typically requires replacing the entire vapor canister, including the vent valves. This problem is known to affect up to the 2016 models and can be an expensive fix.
- Catalytic Converter Software Issue: Previously, there was a software issue that would incorrectly report an issue with the catalytic converter when there actually wasn't one. This issue affected older models, but Toyota released a software update to correct it, so it should no longer be an issue.
- Oxygen Sensor Failure: Another common problem is the failure of oxygen sensors, which can cause the Check Engine light to turn on. This issue can be costly to fix, as some owners have reported replacing one sensor only to have to replace another one shortly after. This problem is known to affect models up to 2014.
- Transmission Issues: There have been a handful of reports of transmission problems with the 2020 Toyota RAV4, including stumbling transmissions, delayed acceleration, and leaky transmissions. While not a widespread issue, it's something to be aware of if you're considering a 2020 model.
- Steering Wheel Issues: Some RAV4 owners have reported strange noises coming from the steering rack, such as clicking sounds when turning the steering wheel at full lock. In more serious cases, some people reported the steering wheel failing altogether.
- Water Pump Failure: Failure in the water pump on the RAV4 has been reported by drivers, usually accompanied by loud noises coming from the engine. This issue requires replacing the water pump to avoid larger problems.
- Gearbox Issues: Slipping gears and a slight whining noise coming from the gearbox are two common RAV4 complaints. Toyota has tried to address this issue by expanding the warranty to cover more mileage.
- Navigation/Audio Apparatus Installation: Some RAV4 owners have found fault with the way the navigation/audio apparatus has been installed, with the position of the screen being less than user-friendly due to sunlight glare.
- Engine Light Coming On: RAV4 owners have reported that their 'check engine' light comes on during drives, typically at lower speeds. This issue is hard to diagnose and could be due to a number of factors, but it's always advised to get your vehicle checked out to be on the safe side.
It's important to note that the Toyota RAV4 has an excellent reputation in terms of reliability, with a reliability score of 4.0 out of 5.0, according to RepairPal. However, it's always a good idea to be aware of potential issues when considering purchasing a vehicle, especially when buying a used model.
What is the common problem with Toyota RAV4?
But with more used RAV4s in the market — some with hundreds of thousands of miles on the odometer — some of these hiccups will be unavoidable. The RAV4's issues include excessive oil consumption, steering wheel problems, lagging transmissions, fuel system problems, and electrical complications, among other troubles.

Vehicle year: 2012
I have owned multiple RAV4s, and my family has purchased 6 Toyota cars/SUVS in the past nine years. While the 2012 RAV4 is a competent vehicle that handles all kinds of weather with little drama, it has some areas that could be improved. The platform has not evolved over a decade of changing oil prices, and it remains highly inefficient at 23 miles per gallon in combined driving over 36000 miles for the 4 cylinder model. However, it does have large and flexible capacities to move people and goods and very good visibility. The brand dilution is most notable in some of the interior materials and the quality of the electronic interfaces. The seat materials in the base and sport models are poor, but the seats have relatively good padding. Unfortunately, they will stain if water is poured on them inadvertently. Either the company did not test the materials or is profiting from the sale of Scotchguard. The armrests on the doors are akin to sandpaper in the summer, so make sure when you test drive this car you do not have on heavy coats as this flaw will become apparent in the warmer months. Most of the interior is lower quality harder plastics, which scratch with ease. The stereo options are uninspired. In our case, we experienced electrical problems just after the warranty expired, and the dealership had little sympathy. As mediocre as the ownership experience was for this car, it appears the newer models are even less desirable. However, I believe that Toyota will refocus on solid engineering platforms and the highest quality customer experience and eschew their search for marketing gimmickry and the bottom line that keeps their cars in a constant state of recalls.

Vehicle year: 2019
I am currently in the market for a SUV that is similar in size to the RAV4. I am considering the Forester and Honda CRV as well, but I have a preference for Toyota. I test drove the Toyota first and was pleased with the exterior design. The presence of plastic both inside and out did not bother me. I opted for a basic LE trim line as I have no use for a sun/moon roof. However, I was disappointed to find out that the 'nutmeg' interior color option listed on toyota.com was not available in my area. The only option was black, which I found to be a bit too dark. Honda and Subaru had light color options readily available, but Toyota did not. Additionally, the black cloth material available looked cheap and flimsy to me. The speedometer display area was also a bit cluttered with information, making it difficult to read some of the smaller or cryptic information. As an older driver with eyesight issues, I would have preferred larger icons and lettering with more contrast. The lettering on the steering wheel controls and dash was particularly difficult to read due to the smaller, lower contrast font and color used by Toyota. However, I understand that with time, the controls will become easier to use. Overall, I found the engine to be a bit noisy during acceleration, but this was not a major issue for me.To me, the constant speed noise is much more frequent and minimal. Additionally, the transmission exhibited some odd behavior when I slowed for a turn and then accelerated again. It would surge or pause as if it couldn't decide what to do. This is concerning for its long term reliability. However, I have noticed similar transmission anomalies in my Camry. Overall, I think Toyota engineers prioritize main line functionality over the finer points of transmission behavior. As a result, I am now interested in test driving the competition to do my due diligence. Each vehicle has its own strengths and I want to make an informed decision.

Vehicle year: 2014
After a year and several thousand miles, it's time for a review that others can use as a reference. The gas mileage is as advertised, averaging about 26 miles per gallon on the highway and about 21 in the city. Some people have complained about the transmission and the car's power, but I have found that using eco mode and sport mode brings out the car's true performance (playing with the shift paddle is also fun). In my personal experience, I use eco mode on the highway and sport mode on back roads or in the city. The car has a good surrounding view and I love the rearview camera. The cargo area is almost as big as my 1998 Grand Cherokee, and the rear seats can be folded completely flat. As of August 2017, my wife has seized the 2014 RAV-4, and I have been using her 2014 Prius-4 to get around town and commute to work. The RAV-4 is still running great without any issues, and I change the oil and filter once a year. I did not bring the car back to the local dealer for free oil changes and checkups because I have no trust for anyone but myself to take care of any vehicle I own and operate. I still surprise people at traffic lights because they don't believe the RAV-4 could be so responsive at the start (using the sport mode). After three years of driving the 2014 RAV-4, my wife and I have had no issues. We found it quite fast when using the power button. Now that the model is becoming old and out of style, we just wish that Toyota would come up with something slightly bigger with more ground clearance, more cargo area, and adjustable rear seats (for smart cargo management) and put the exhaust pipe in a higher place under the car. We would also like to see more color options for the next generation. If we don't see new features, we might have to pick the CRV instead.

I've had my RAV4 for a week now and I'm really happy with my purchase! I recently switched from my comfy Tahoe LT and I'm already impressed with how smooth and easy to handle the RAV4 is. I took it on a 1000 mile road trip and it was amazing - I didn't even feel the bumps in the road! The gas mileage was good and the visual clearance was excellent. I also didn't notice any road noise. The tailgate isn't too heavy, which is great for me as a small person, and there's so much room in the back. The extra mini-trunk is a bonus too! The driver's seat did feel a little hard after a few hours, but I had a pillow to help. The steering wheel is like holding onto a metal bar, but it's fixable. The back seat is very comfortable with lots of leg room. Overall, the RAV4 is an excellent choice!

It's great to hear that you're a Toyota family, going all the way back to 1966 with your dad's 67 Corona! Choosing between the Forester, RAV4, and Honda CRV must have been a tough decision, but it's wonderful that you ultimately decided on the RAV4. It's impressive that the RAV4 is the only one with a V6, and it sounds like it performed exceptionally well on your recent trip to Palm Springs, California. Even with 4 people and 500 pounds of climbing gear, you still managed to average around 21 to 23 miles per gallon. The RAV4's power and ability to cruise at 80 mph uphill and loaded down is truly remarkable. It's great to hear that with Nokian Hakkapeliitta studded tires, the RAV4 is a tiger in the snow. It's fantastic that you've had a perfect experience with your RAV4 so far, and it's even spacious enough to sleep stretched out in the back! Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us, and we hope you continue to enjoy the best car you've ever had!

I rented a new XLE with only 240 miles on it. While driving it for the first time, I noticed that the engine was quite loud and unrefined. Additionally, the amount of road and tire noise was surprising for a 2020 vehicle, and the driver's seat was quite hard and short, which made it uncomfortable for my thighs. The door panels were also made of hard plastic, which was unexpected for the XLE version. However, there were some positive aspects to the vehicle, such as the large windshield and side windows that provided a panoramic view, as well as the generous cargo room. Overall, I found that the XLE was not suitable for long distance driving due to the lack of sound insulation and hard seats. In comparison, the Buick Encore SUV, which is smaller than the RAV4, has a much quieter ride and more comfortable seats, making it a better option for long distance driving.

I've owned this car for two years now and have driven 20k miles. From the outside, the Sport package gives it a handsome and aggressive look. I don't even mind the tire on the door. However, when you get in and drive it, the 4 cyl/4 speed gets the job done, but there is no joy. The handling is good for a Sport Ute but can be jarring and uncomfortable, especially on long trips. The cabin is a bit tight for a 6' tall guy, and the interior bits are cheap. On the bright side, there's plenty of space for your stuff, which is why we purchased the car. However, coming from a '04 BMW 325i, this car is a little disappointing and leaves me longing for the good old days. It's clear that Toyota cut corners with this car, and it shows.

The 2021 Rav4 exhibits instability and excessive vibration when driven at speeds exceeding 55mph, which poses a significant safety risk. As a professional in the automotive industry, I am disappointed with Toyota's safety design in this regard.

It appears that Toyota may have prioritized profits over customer satisfaction, similar to some American car manufacturers. For instance, the stereo system in our 2014 Rav4 has stopped working after 4 years and is stuck in a rebooting loop. This issue has been reported by many online, and Toyota's only suggested solution is to buy a new radio from them. This seems unreasonable. It is disappointing to see Toyota's reputation tarnished in this way, as they are a respected Japanese company.

I agree that the transmission doesn't feel quite right. It seems to slip and jerk more than any car I've owned before. The brakes also sound like they are dragging, especially when I first drive down the driveway. Unfortunately, the power port is inaccessible if there are drinks in the drink holder. On the bright side, I do appreciate having a full-sized tire that doesn't require unloading the storage space to access. Just be sure to check the pressure if you're getting low readings. One thing I don't like is that you can't put longer items in to haul, like I could with my old Ford that had a rear door that lifted up instead of to the side. I'm still trying to figure out how to put the baby anchor back in the roof compartment.
