Toyota Rav4 problems

The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common Toyota Rav4 problems

The Toyota RAV4 is a popular and reliable compact SUV, but like all vehicles, it has some common problems reported by owners. Here are the most common issues with the Toyota RAV4, based on data from real owners and various sources:

  1. Evaporative System Issue: One of the most common problems with the Toyota RAV4 is a faulty evaporative system (EVAP) vapor canister. This issue can result in the Check Engine light illuminating, which typically requires replacing the entire vapor canister, including the vent valves. This problem is known to affect up to the 2016 models and can be an expensive fix.
  2. Catalytic Converter Software Issue: Previously, there was a software issue that would incorrectly report an issue with the catalytic converter when there actually wasn't one. This issue affected older models, but Toyota released a software update to correct it, so it should no longer be an issue.
  3. Oxygen Sensor Failure: Another common problem is the failure of oxygen sensors, which can cause the Check Engine light to turn on. This issue can be costly to fix, as some owners have reported replacing one sensor only to have to replace another one shortly after. This problem is known to affect models up to 2014.
  4. Transmission Issues: There have been a handful of reports of transmission problems with the 2020 Toyota RAV4, including stumbling transmissions, delayed acceleration, and leaky transmissions. While not a widespread issue, it's something to be aware of if you're considering a 2020 model.
  5. Steering Wheel Issues: Some RAV4 owners have reported strange noises coming from the steering rack, such as clicking sounds when turning the steering wheel at full lock. In more serious cases, some people reported the steering wheel failing altogether.
  6. Water Pump Failure: Failure in the water pump on the RAV4 has been reported by drivers, usually accompanied by loud noises coming from the engine. This issue requires replacing the water pump to avoid larger problems.
  7. Gearbox Issues: Slipping gears and a slight whining noise coming from the gearbox are two common RAV4 complaints. Toyota has tried to address this issue by expanding the warranty to cover more mileage.
  8. Navigation/Audio Apparatus Installation: Some RAV4 owners have found fault with the way the navigation/audio apparatus has been installed, with the position of the screen being less than user-friendly due to sunlight glare.
  9. Engine Light Coming On: RAV4 owners have reported that their 'check engine' light comes on during drives, typically at lower speeds. This issue is hard to diagnose and could be due to a number of factors, but it's always advised to get your vehicle checked out to be on the safe side.

It's important to note that the Toyota RAV4 has an excellent reputation in terms of reliability, with a reliability score of 4.0 out of 5.0, according to RepairPal. However, it's always a good idea to be aware of potential issues when considering purchasing a vehicle, especially when buying a used model.

As a long-time Toyota customer, I have owned several models including the Yaris, Camry, and two previous RAV4s. While those were great choices, my experience with the 2021 LE RAV4 has been disappointing. Although the exterior design is attractive like all Toyota models, the driver's chair is very uncomfortable and the motor is quite noisy, making it sound like the car is working hard. Additionally, the interior of the car is also quite noisy, lacking complete silence. The speakers also do not sound good. Overall, I find driving this RAV4 to be unpleasant. If you are considering this car, I would advise you to think carefully before making a decision. Unfortunately, I am stuck with this car until my lease is over.

The RAV4 seemed impressive during the test drive, but after living with it for two months, I have been disappointed. While it has some great features such as nice road manners, comfortable and attractive interior, and large storage capacity, there are some downsides. The transmission acts more like a CVT and the engine is very harsh and noisy while getting to cruising speed. The rearview mirror is nauseating in camera mode and worthless at night, but luckily it can be turned off. The lane safety feature is overly sensitive and picks up road repairs, constantly battling the car trying to steer itself, but again, it can be turned off. Other than the radar cruise control, safety features seem more gimmicky than useful. The storage capacity is large, but there are limited storage solutions, and groceries need to sit on the floor behind the seats or they wind up all over the place. Lastly, I had a negative experience with Toyota Financial customer service, so be sure to understand their monthly payment structure in detail before signing anything.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the dealer twice in the past 8 months due to a dead battery. I'm curious to hear what they have to say about this ongoing issue. Overall, I really love this car, but it seems like the battery may be a common issue based on some other reviews I've read. Thanks for listening!

In the past 6 months, unfortunately, my battery has died twice. The first time, Toyota Care was kind enough to jump start it for me, and the second time I had to have it towed to the dealer. Thankfully, they were able to recharge the battery and check everything out, but I do believe that Toyota should take responsibility for this recurring issue and find a permanent solution instead of just treating the symptoms.

I've always driven General Motors vehicles, but in March 2021, I decided to give Toyota a chance after hearing wonderful things about the Rav4. However, I had an unfortunate experience with the car. While at a stop light, my car lunged forward twice and hit the car in front of me. I immediately reported it to Toyota, and they sent someone to the body shop to perform diagnostic tests. Although I reported a second incident, I was told that they could not do anything until the Toyota engineers review the diagnostic test data. Despite the situation, I am hopeful that Toyota will resolve the issue soon. I appreciate their efforts to investigate the problem and ensure my safety. I look forward to getting back on the road with my Rav4 once the issue is resolved.

The sport package with the V-6 was the clincher. The i-4 is more than adequate but the 6 is in a different league. It's quiet, smooth, and very quick. The Rav looks better in 'sports wear' as opposed to the Limited's 'formal attire'. Another big plus is that there's no spare tire on the back of the Sport V-6 (although run flat tires may not be as great; we'll see). While they're a little stingy with options, the fit and finish are great, and Toyota reliability is tough to beat.

I'm so impressed with my little SUV! I bought it used with 30k miles and have put 145k miles on it with just oil changes and brakes. At 160k, I had some maintenance done, including new sparks, throttle cleaning, brakes, and valve cover gasket replacement. I've also replaced fluids here and there. It's been incredibly reliable, and I've never had a breakdown on the road. I've been test driving newer cars, but so far, I haven't found anything that measures up. The new Honda HR-V has slow acceleration, the Jeep Renegade smelled like it had no oil during the test drive, and the Prius V looked and sounded weird and had no space in the front seat. Even the new RAV4 seems like a sluggish old bus compared to my petite and sporty RAV. I wish Toyota had kept this model the same!

I had a 1999 RAV4 that was absolutely bulletproof. Recently, I upgraded to a 2009 Sport V6 w/appearance package and I must say, the power of this V6 is truly amazing. What's even better is that fuel economy is not compromised at all. On a recent 500 mile round-trip, I was able to get almost 28 mpg. The 2009 model is much more refined and significantly roomier than my old 1999 model. Rear-seat room is significantly improved, as is cargo room, making it perfect for families with children and pets. The only downside for me is the ride, as you can feel every little bump. However, I believe that this is specific to the sport model. After all, it's an SUV, not a Cadillac.

Quick acceleration, a classy interior, and better gas mileage than many 4-cylinder competitors make this car a great choice. I love the gray leather interior, although it's limited to 5 seats in leather. Additionally, the Bluetooth works great with voice commands.

I purchased a 2009 Base 2.5L/AWD Rav4. First and foremost, I really like the Rav4. I have had it for about 10 months now and average between 25-28mpg (mostly highway driven). Interior is laid out well with great room for drivers and passengers. Rear passenger seats move fore and aft and recline. Sightlines are very good and all instruments are well laid out. Toyota revised the base engine for more horsepower/torque and smoother running and it is apparent. The engine is smooth and revs freely. Fuel economy is very good for a CUV. behind the rear seats provide ample storage with under floor storage bins and handy remore release levers to lower rear seats from the hatch.
