It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Every time the car is started, or begins driving after sitting idle for a couple of minutes, it will beep and alarm constantly for several minutes, warning me of the passenger airbag. It is a serous distraction, and now prevents me from transporting a passenger. This has been going on since June 2024, and dealer refuses to look at car due to recall. I was even willing to pay myself to make the repair. No one will touch it. The remedy was originally set for the summer time, then end of 3rd quarter 2024. The seats sound very comfortable and supportive, and it's great that you have plenty of room for your road bikes in the back without having to remove the front wheel. I recently switched from a RAV4 to a Buick Encore, but I regretted my decision as my previous RAV4 lacked some features that my wife needed, such as heated seats and a power driver seat. These features were crucial for her back problems, which I didn't consider when I bought it. The Encore had all of these features and more, but it lacked a passenger armrest and space, which became a burden for us. We have two dogs and take them with us everywhere, so the lack of space made it difficult for us to travel together. I decided to trade in my Encore for a RAV4 SE model, which had the features I needed without any extra frills. The SE model looks sporty and sharp, but I chose it for its power driver's seat and heated leather-like seats. I opted for the 2018 model as the 2019 model had less cargo space due to the slope of the rear. The RAV4 has plenty of storage space, even with the rear seats up, which was not the case with the Encore. Although I miss some features of the Encore, such as remote start and Onstar, the RAV4's space was more important to me.The Encore did have some annoyances, such as the drivers seat seams coming apart (supple leather, cheap stitches), and the auto air/heat not working as it should. However, the RAV4's ride, handling, look, feel, fit and finish are all fine. Although there are some minor dash rattling and center armrest rattling, it is nearly perfect, with only minor annoyances. The passenger seat sits a bit close to the dash, but it is something you can get used to. The lack of a real GPS in anything less than the Limited is disappointing in today's world of electronics. However, the Scoutlink GPS workaround on the SE works okay, but it can be glitchy and sometimes shuts off mid-trip. The radio and speakers are fine, and the JBL system was a bigger disappointment because all the sound came out of the front center speaker like an AM Radio from a 1975 sedan. The LED lights (headlights) are the best in the car industry right now, with plenty of light spread out in front of you, and the high beams are LED as well. The bright LED daytime running lights (SE and Limited) are amazingly bright and function as parking lights as well. The LED tail lights and brake lights are more than adequate to warn drivers behind you. The air/heat work like a dream. The rear power lift gate is slow, but a nice upgrade and very reliable. The halogen fog lights point too close to the ground, but it's not a big issue. The safety sense suite of things (Drifting from lane with correction, emergency braking, dynamic radar cruise control, auto high beams, and on mine the blind spot monitors on the mirrors) are amazing. There is nothing more you could want in a car, and it really feels good to be back in a RAV4. I tried lots of others, and everything else was a disappointment. The RAV4, the 2018 version, is one worth getting before they are all gone.Oh, that's great to hear! The transmission is a perfect shifter, the engine runs smoothly and quietly, and the ride is mostly decent. The handling, especially on the SE model, feels very sporty. It's no wonder you're keeping this one! It's a shame you had to get rid of your 2015 Limited, but it's great that you found everything you needed and wanted in the 2018 RAV4 SE model. Even at nearly 300lbs and 6' tall, you find it cozy and comfortable, so anyone can! Plus, you're getting a great MPG on the highway, closer to 30, and even in the city/suburbs with lots of lights/traffic, you're still getting about 21 MPG.

Five years and it's still a winner. You'll love the good ride and handling, and the outstanding acceleration and braking. It came with run-flat tires and I replaced them at 50,000 miles. I never had any problems or dealer issues. I would buy it again, except the V6 is not available any longer. My only complaints are the lower-than-expected gas mileage and the too-small fuel tank.

I love the way this car looks and handles, and the V6 engine is really peppy. It's also great on snow-covered roads, which is a huge plus. However, I was surprised by the cost of replacing the water pump - it ended up being $1800 ($171 for parts). My wife drives this car to work every day, which is about 100 miles round trip, mostly on the highway. If I had known about the cost of this repair beforehand, I might have chosen a different option. But overall, I'm still really happy with my purchase. Live and learn, right?

Please be cautious. While I don't mind the engine noise, the constant shifting of the 8-speed transmission is becoming tiresome. The rattling on bumpy roads is also quite bothersome, as it sounds like a bag of empty tin cans and I can't seem to locate the source. Despite this, the gas mileage is fantastic and exceeds my expectations. I must note that we have only had this car for a month, so please take my experience with a grain of salt. It's worth mentioning that this car is quite different from my Tacoma.

I purchased this vehicle when Toyota still had a good reputation, but unfortunately, my experience has led me to the decision to not purchase another Toyota. The computer malfunctioned, resulting in a $1,300 repair cost, and shortly after, the transmission failed, costing an additional $3,000. Additionally, I had a concerning experience where the vehicle stopped unexpectedly while turning left. It is my belief that Toyota needs to prioritize their customers over profits.

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with my Toyota. Although I have had some issues with it, I am confident that they can be resolved. The car runs well, but I have noticed some quality issues that I hope can be addressed. Unfortunately, the navigation system has not been working properly, but I have found that my iPhone is a reliable alternative. I have also had some trouble with the seat-belt locking, but I am sure that this can be fixed. Lastly, I have noticed some strange noises coming from the rear brakes. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my wife's car, which has been our trusty daily driver and road trip vehicle for years. Overall, we've been pretty happy with it. The car handles really well, and the engine is super powerful - much more so than my old Nissan Altima, which had the same size V6. We've even taken it off-road a few times, and it's handled great in the snow. The interior is decent, although we've had a few minor issues. Unfortunately, we've had some trouble with the powertrain reliability. Since we've had the car, it's started to rattle loudly on startup, and the 4x4 lights have randomly lit up a few times, even though we couldn't find any problems. Recently, the VVT module exploded, which caused some pretty extensive engine damage. So, just be aware of these issues if you're considering this car. Thanks for listening!
