The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Some RAV4 owners have also reported clunking or clicking noises when attempting to turn the steering wheel.

In addition, some white RAV4s have been reported to have paint bubbling and peeling off, particularly those painted with Toyota's Blizzard Pearl or Super White paint.

Finally, the 2019 RAV4 has been reported to have transmission problems, with some owners experiencing hesitation and lurching at slower speeds.

ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-19
  • VIN: 2T3P1RFV1KC
  • Components: ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: I was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green and I pressed the gas, the engine sputtered and almost shut off. Just before I came to a stop, the engine revved up and the vehicle accelerated. The uneven acceleration is concerning. I recently replaced the gas cap and serviced the fuel system, which leads me to believe there is a defect with the engine. Later in the day, the check engine light went on and AWD system, cruise control, and lane assist were disabled.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
  • VIN: 2T3H1RFV9KW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: A malfunction in the electronic control of the engine, throttle, or automatic transmission has been detected. The car then ran hot and started jerking. I took it to autozone for them to look and could not find anything, I had a mechanic come over to look at it, and he couldn't find anything either. I sent it to Toyota Wolfchase in Memphis TN. Who has stated it will be two or three days before they can even look at it. This seems to be a common problem with Toyota cars yet there's no recall I have seen numerous complaints on Google Reddit, TikTok, and more. I called corporate to make a complaint and they said they don't see any complaints which I know is not true

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-12
  • VIN: 2T3W1RFV6KW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In July of 2023 at only 23K miles but out of warranty coverage, I received the Engine Maintenance Required warning for the failure of the Coolant Bypass Valve. I took it to the dealership (Alamo Toyota in San Antonio, TX) and they said it needed to be replaced and would not be covered under warranty. They quoted over $850 to do the replacement but the part was on national backorder. After returning home I started doing research and found that this is happening at a very high rate and thus there is obviously a defect to this part. Toyota should be treating this is a defect, fixing the issue and providing the fix as a recall fix. I should not have to pay near $1000 to replace a defective part with another defective part that will most likely fail again. Since I am a very low mileage driver, from July 2023 to now I have only driven 4K miles, I have not replaced the part but continually monitor the engine temperature and for any coolant leakage. I know there is now a class action lawsuit but shouldn't the NHTSA get involved due to the number of failures on RAV4s and Corollas and the lack of responsibility being taken by Toyota?

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
  • VIN: JTMF1RFV2KJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine: I got the 100k engine maintenance done. I replace my coolant and got an oil change. The engine maintenance required warning is still on my dashboard and will not go away because the diagnostic reader states I need a new coolant bypass valve. This is not apart of the factory maintenance, alot on rav4 owners are dealing with this, and it is very pricey. I think it is best for this type of situation to be recalled. Brakes: I got my front brakes replaced and I had issues with my front calipers. My mechanic said both calipers had holes in them and caused my brake fluid to leak which has affected my braking alot. It takes a long time to brake and I’ve experienced this even after I’ve paid alot of money to get my driver said caliper replaced, still need to get my passenger side replaced. My mechanic only uses toyota brand supplies so I’m not sure why there isn’t any longevity in the quality of supplies. I’ve only had the vehicle for 2 years.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-31
  • VIN: 2T3W1RFVXKW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: Defective coolant bypass valves on my 2019 Toyota RAV 4 have caused coolant to leak out of my vehicle’s closed-loop coolant system, harming its ability to properly regulate engine temperature. Eventually the message “Engine Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer” appeared on my dashboard indicating an issue with the engine. An internet search of this error message on the 2019-2023 Toyota RAV4 and Corolla models shows this is a widespread defect, affecting hundreds of Toyota owners. A class action lawsuit has been filed against Toyota regarding defective coolant bypass valves in the 2019-2023 Toyota RAV4 and Corolla models [XXX] et al. v. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc) but Toyota has still not addressed this defect with a recall. Attached is a copy of the mechanic invoice I just paid to replace the defective coolant bypass valves on my 2019 RAV4 as the engine was not maintaining temperatures appropriately and in risk of total engine failure. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • VIN: 2T3H1RFVXKW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Coolant valve failed ($700)shortly after warranty ended; extended warranty did not cover repair. Coolant valve then caused harness to be unusable causing for a $4500 part replacement to be required. During the whole process the Toyota dealership maintenance told me that the engine repair required alert was for normal maintenance and directed me to continue driving with it until my scheduled service every time after speaking with three different people and a mechanic at the dealerships maintenance shop. I was then told after bringing in the car that I could leave although the alert was still present. Finally after the maintenance supervisor looked at my car I was told it was not safe to have been driving. Toyota made a faulty part that they expected to break and still put it in vehicles. They then are not even aware/ do not acknowledge this widespread issue in 2019 and 2020 rav-4s and Carrolas. This defective part can cause the engine to have catastrophic issues as I was later told by the maintenance manager at a Toyota dealership. However, Toyota is leaving car owners and leaders out of thousands of dollars in repairs and not acknowledging or warning customers of a dangerous issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-31
  • VIN: 2T3H1RFV9KC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2019 Toyota RAV4 had been making a loud noise at random intervals when driving at high speeds such as freeway speeds. The dealer said they could not reproduce the issue. A couple years later at around 65000 miles my engine maintenance required message came up and would not go away. I took my vehicle to get the code read and there were no codes. I kept smelling fuel or different unpleasant smells when driving the vehicle. The engine maintenance required notice would turn on every single Time I used the AC. I later went to the Toyota dealer and they said the coolant bypass valve had been leaking and causing the engine maintenance notice to come up. This is a new vehicle that has been maintained properly and rarely driven far. The part and labor was $824.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
  • VIN: 2T3Y1RFV2KC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: A warning message appeared that stated: “Engine maintenance required - Visit your dealer”. At that time my vehicle had 38,796 miles on it. I contacted the Service Advisor at Toyota of Newnan who advised that it was likely the Coolant Bypass Valve on the engine and that they have had issues and repairs relating to that condition on their RAV4 and Corolla models. Their mechanics confirmed that this was the fault and that failing to have it repaired / replaced could result in engine overheating and engine seizing which could result in lose of vehicle control and endanger other vehicles on the road. Sensing the urgency, I had the repair / replacement completed at a cost of $846.68. Service advisor stated that many of the other vehicles with the same problem were still under warranty and repaired at no cost to the consumer. In my opinion this recurring defect among two Toyota model lines is occurring with enough regularity to warrant Toyota issuing at least a Service Bulletin and covering the cost of the repair and reimbursement to those that had to pay for the repair.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
  • VIN: JTMRWRFV3KD
  • Components: Carry Handle, Shell, Base,Other/I am not sure
  • Summary: Maxi-Cosi Emme 360… MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN! When in the locked position with confirmed “locked” emblem visible, the car seat can easily be knocked loose and rotated. There are of course several warning labels on the side that say do not attempt to rotate the seat while in the locked position without using the appropriate release handle. The amount of light force I am apply is extremely minimal and nothing compared to the torsion that will be exerted to the car seat during a serious collision. We have already contacted the manufacturer directly, this is now the second car seat we have received with the same issue. We have been on the phone with tech support. They have no idea what’s happening and cannot resolve the issue. Again, this is a very serious safety concern with the car seat.

  • Summary: Toyota Rav4 2019 XLE - Engine Coolant Pump Performance/Stuck Off Error code P26CB milage 56,920 Toyota says this is NOT covered by the 5 year power train warranty. For years Toyota has manufactured this water pump that freezes up due to manufacturing defect that allows the magnetic base housing to rupture. Dealers want to replace entire pump (or at least charge for it) verses replacing the frozen plastic rotor. Dealer claims this is not covered under 5 year power train warranty. Why not? My car temp started climbing and took me hours to get home (10 miles) as I kept stopping for hours waiting for engine cool and sprinkling water from bottles over the engine and trans housing where it butts against the engine (silver brading). (This was late in weekend night - repair shops not open. I do see a recall investigation started (no recall yet) and just wanted to add my complaint to the issue. At first the temp gauge read normal but later started climbing. The engine light did come on the the DB2 said P26CB.

Negative 2019 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

The vehicle looks great inside and out. The front seats are very comfortable, although the cabin material is just average. However, the loud intrusive noise from the engine and road noise can be quite annoying and make it difficult to carry on a normal conversation in this vehicle. It would have been great if Toyota had fixed these issues, considering their resources and know-how. It's worth noting that many major car publications and consumer magazines have also pointed out these issues. Overall, the RAV4 could use some improvements in terms of NVH.

I purchased my 2019 RAV4 XLE last April, but unfortunately, I have not been enjoying the driving experience as much as I had hoped. The engine tends to make a lot of noise when accelerating from 0 to 40 mph, which can be quite distracting. Additionally, there is a slight hesitation when turning corners that can make it feel like the engine is about to stall. To mitigate these issues, I usually listen to music or take a bit longer to get up to speed, but I understand that this can be frustrating for other drivers. While I have purchased many cars in my lifetime, the RAV4 ranks second to last due to these issues. In hindsight, I wish I had test-driven a few other models like the Honda CR-V and the Nissan Rogue before making my purchase. However, I do appreciate the RAV4's sleek design and advanced safety features, such as the warning signal when backing out. Overall, while I may not have made the best choice with the RAV4, I am still grateful for its positive attributes.

Hi there! Last March, I purchased a 2019 Toyota Rav4 Adventure and I really liked the body style. However, after driving it for 2000 miles, I started experiencing some groaning noises when driving between 20 to 40 miles on stop and go. I went back to the dealership to complain about the issue and the Toyota service team was able to duplicate the problem. They informed me that it was related to the transfer case assembly and that Toyota Corporation was still working on finding a solution. Although they were unable to fix the problem, I decided to seek the help of a Lemon Attorney in my area. After 3 months, Toyota bought back my 2019 Toyota Rav4 Adventure and my problem was finally solved. If you're experiencing a similar issue with groaning or moaning noises, I highly recommend seeking the help of a Lemon Attorney.

I recently test drove the 2019 RAV4 Limited FWD, hoping to see improvements from my 2016 RAV4 SE AWD. However, I was disappointed with the engine noise, which made the car feel cheaper in my opinion. Despite this, I am looking forward to the release of the HYBRID in the summer and hope it will be more appealing. I came across a quote from Angus MacKenzie in Motor Trend that perfectly summed up my thoughts: 'Good in parts, but we should expect more than that from a company with the resources and engineering capability of Toyota.'

In June 2019, I brought my RAV4 Adventure to a local Toyota dealer due to a 'growling' noise at 20-25 MPH with only 3700 miles on it. The dealership was very helpful and had me drive with a tech to verify the complaint. I made sure to drive my car for approximately 20 minutes prior and the noise occurred as expected. The dealership informed me that Toyota is aware of the issue and that it is currently being investigated. They stated that the noise occurs when the all-wheel drive is coupled and uncoupled with the rear differential, but it should not lead to any damage to the vehicle. Toyota will notify the dealers once a resolution is reached. Although this has been an ongoing problem, I trust that Toyota is working hard to come up with a solution. I appreciate the dealership's help and Toyota's commitment to resolving the issue. Thank you!

I absolutely love my 2019 Rav4! Since purchasing it in January '19, I've put 33k miles on it and it's been a great ride. The only issue I had was with the rough shifting at slow speeds, but Toyota was quick to resolve it with a warranty covered ECM update. I really appreciate Toyota's responsiveness and dedication to customer satisfaction. If you're experiencing any hesitation on acceleration from a slow roll or rolling stop, I highly recommend checking out T-SB-0107-19 from August 15, 2019.

I've been searching for a new car to replace my 1997 Rav4. I test drove the Hyundai Tuscon, the Hyundai Kona, and the Rav4 Adventure grade. Out of all three, the Rav4 is definitely the best. After purchasing the car, I was a little disappointed that the marketing materials online made it seem like the Adventure grade would have some standard features, which were later revealed to be a part of a package (but that's what I get for getting one so early). So far, I've loved the car. However, I do have a few issues with it. The headrests are a little strange, especially for someone with a ponytail. I've turned the headrest around for now, and that's fixed the issue temporarily. The normal headlights are EXTREMELY bright, which is great for me, but other drivers seem to think I have my high beams on. Lastly, when the car enters

My wife and I recently traded in our two cars, a 2008 Honda Civic-SI and a 2005 CRV, for the AWD RAV4 XLE with upgraded Tech Package and Entune 3.0. We were looking for a car that could take us on hiking and camping trips, handle mountain passes, and be comfortable on long road trips. The RAV4 XLE met all of our needs and more, with its excellent safety features, spacious cargo area, and impressive MPG. Plus, it looks amazing - we went with the Lunar Rock color and it's really neat! I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it is to drive, especially in sport mode. We recently took it on a trip to Whistler and I didn't want to give up the steering wheel. The car handled corners and accelerated extremely well, and we were able to keep up with performance brands like Porsche Cayennes and Jaguar SUVs. The CX-5 was also a strong contender. Despite all this, we still managed to get about 30 MPG, which is wild to me. I did notice some jerky gear shifting and slow starts in Eco Mode, but that's to be expected when you're trying to get 35 MPG. Speaking of which, the RAV4 XLE has the best MPG in its class, and there's even a hybrid model available if you want to go even further. Overall, we're extremely happy with our decision to go with the RAV4 XLE. Other important factors that influenced our decision included...The car is fantastic! The upgraded sound system is amazing, and the leather interior is very comfortable. The cargo space is the best in its class, and the safety features are superb, including blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and collision avoidance breaking. The tech package is also impressive, with a digital rear view mirror and wireless charging pad. Overall, I highly recommend this car for anyone looking for a well-rounded vehicle with great options and safety features. While it may not be as fast as the CX-5, it is still a great utilitarian vehicle. As a side note, I have not experienced any gear grinding issues in the 500 miles I have driven the car so far. I will update this review if I notice any issues in the future, or if the car does not perform as well as I expect it to in the snow this winter.
