The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 2004 Toyota Rav4 problems

The Toyota RAV4, a compact SUV popular for its impressive fuel economy and sleek design, has been known to have several common problems throughout its model years. This article will focus on the 2004 Toyota RAV4 and its reported issues.

One of the most common problems with the 2004 Toyota RAV4 is related to the automatic transmission. Many owners have reported issues such as reluctant shifting, hesitations, and juddering. These concerns are more prevalent in RAV4s of that era, so it is crucial to thoroughly test the car through various driving modes to identify any potential transmission issues.

Another problem that affected the 2001, 2002, and 2003 models, but not specifically the 2004 RAV4, is an ECU issue. This problem caused the engine to stall, especially when the vehicle was idling, and required a software update to resolve.

The 2004 RAV4 may also have issues with the speedometer not working, which is usually caused by water getting into the electrics and shorting out connections. This problem is relatively easy to fix, but it is still worth checking for any signs of this issue when purchasing a used 2004 RAV4.

The engine management light can also come on and not go out, which is generally down to a faulty air mass sensor or catalytic convertor sensor. If the bulb doesn't come on at all, it could indicate other undetected problems.

In addition to these issues, it is essential to check the D-4D diesel engine's cambelt has been changed every 60,000 miles, as failure to do so could result in the belt snapping and causing expensive engine damage.

Lastly, when purchasing a used 2004 Toyota RAV4, it is crucial to check for any signs of panel and underbody damage, as well as scratches in the paint and lower body corners, which could indicate that the car has come into contact with solid objects.

In summary, the 2004 Toyota RAV4 has several reported issues, primarily related to the automatic transmission, speedometer, and engine management light. When purchasing a used 2004 RAV4, it is crucial to thoroughly inspect the car for any signs of these issues and ensure that any necessary repairs have been made.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
  • VIN: JTEGD20V340
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: 10 days ago transmission on 2004 Rav started to act funny. Slow/jerky to engage in lower gears. Check engine lights came on. Checked out by mechanic who said it looked like a transmission problem and should have it looked at by transmission specialist who said it was not safe to drive as is since it could simply die at any time, and it needed a new transmission. When replacing trans, the trans man found the ECM had to be replaced. He said this often happened with 2003 thru 2005 RAV4s. On looking through your site, discovered others had similar issues with their 2004 Ravs. I also found out that the electronic control module for these vehicles is defective and must be repaired to correct the transmission issues. What did Toyota have to say when you looked into this, or do you not think it’s a safety issue?

This vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. The TRAC light comes on and beeps when the car breaks.

EACH PERSON WITH WHOM I SPEAK FAITHFULLY PROMISES THAT I WILL BE CONTACTED, THEN NOTHING. I LIVE IN RURAL ALASKA ON AN ISLAND WITHOUT A TOYOTA DEALER. THE CLOSEST TOYOTA DEALER IS IN ANCHORAGE. • Date Of Incident: 2016-11-07
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTEHD20V040
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: MY SON AND I WERE ON WAY TO PEYTON MANNING CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN MY 2004 TOYOTA RAV4 WHEN THE DRIVER IN FRONT OF ME ABRUPTLY STOPPED, WHICH MADE ME ABRUPTLY STOP, HOWEVER, THE DRIVER BEHIND ME WAS NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND REAR ENDED ME AS I WAS COMPLETELY STOPPED AND HE WAS GOING ABOUT 30 MPH. THIS OCCURRED ON THE PASSENGER BACK OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING ALMOST $4,000 WORTH OF DAMAGE, HOWEVER, MY SON NOR MY SEAT BELTS LOCKED INTO PLACE, THEREFORE, HE SUSTAINED A SIGNIFICANT CONCUSSION, WHIP LASH, MILD MEMORY LOSS, AND NEEDING PHYSICAL THERAPY. BOTH OF MY HANDS WERE ON THE WHEEL, BUT I SUSTAINED WHIP LASH, INJURY TO BOTH MY LEFT & RIGHT SHOULDERS, NECK, AND BACK. I MUST REINFORCE THAT STATEMENT THAT IF THE SEAT BELTS WOULD HAVE LOCKED PROPERLY MY SON AND I MAY HAVE NOT SUSTAINED THIS TYPE OF INJURY, THEREFORE, THIS ACCIDENT WAS LIKE WEARING NO SEATBELT WHEN WE WERE BOTH SECURELY BUCKLED IN AND THE SEAT BELTS NOT WORKING MADE IT LIKE WE WERE DRIVING WITH NO SEAT BELTS FOR PROTECTION.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-02-18
  • VIN: JTEGD20V640
  • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: WHEN DRIVING ON HILLS, SPECIFY DURING A TURN, AT SPORADIC TIMES, THE ESC LIGHT COMES ON, WITH 3 BEEPS FROM THE DASH......THE CAR JERKS AND LUGS, LIKE THE ENGINE IS DYING, THEN RESUMES NORMAL SPEED. EACH TIME THIS HAPPENS IS A LITTLE MORE DRAMATIC THAN THE LAST, AND HAS HAPPENED 5 TIMES IN THE PAST MONTH. MY CAR HAS 99000 MILES ON IT , AND HAS BEEN A TERRIFIC CAR SO FAR, BUT NOW I AM SCARED TO DRIVE IT. MY HUSBAND CALLED TOYOTA DEALERS, AND LOCAL TOY SPECIALTY SHOPS, BUT NO ONE HAS HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. AFTER READING ABOUT OTHER DRIVERS EXPERIENCES WITH THEIR ESC PROBLEMS, I AM LEARY OF THE COST OF A FISHING EXPEDITION AT A DEALER, UNLESS I CAN GO IN WITH MORE INFORMATION. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED, BASED ON THE DEPENDABILITY REPORTS FOR THIS MODEL AND YEAR, AND WOULD LIKE TO KEEP IT FOR A LONG TIME, BUT FIRST NEED TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-12-20
  • VIN: JTEHD20V846
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE VSC/TRAC LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING. ALSO TRANSMISSION STARTED ACTING FUNNY. FROM A STOP SIGN IT WOULD HESITATE AND THEN START WITH A JERK. WHILE DRIVING AT A CONSTANT SPEED THE RPMS WOULD GO UP AND DOWN. I TOOK IT TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE TO HAVE THEM READ THE ERROR CODE. THEY SAID IT WAS A SOLENOID PROBLEM WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION. I TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP AND THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND ORDERED A REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION. TOTAL COST WAS OVER $4,600. SINCE THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED HAVE HAD THE CAR BACK 3 TIMES IN 2 WEEKS WITH SAME PROBLEM. TODAY, 1-23-17, I DROVE IT ABOUT 1 MILE AND VSC/TRAC LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I TOOK IT BACK TO TRANSMISSION SHOP AND LEFT IT RUNNING. THEY CAME OUT AND TRIED TO USE THEIR SCANNER BUT HAD SOME DIFFICULTY SO THEY TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND WHEN THEY TRIED TO RESTART IT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. SO THE CAR NOW HAS BEEN TOWED TO TUNEX SINCE THEY HAVE MORE DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT. ON THE INTERNET I SEE ARTICLE THAT CLAIM THAT THE PROBLEM WITH THESE 2001 THRU AT LEAST 2005 RAVS IS THE ECM. THE SITE OF OTHER DEAL.COM SAYS THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM BECAUSE OF DEFECTIVE ECMS FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST TOYOTA THAT COVERED TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS ON 2001-2003 RAVS. SEEMS LIKE WHETHER IT IS THE ECM OR THE TRANSMISSION OR BOTH THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE. *TR

  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2010-2016 4Runner, 2003-2006 Tundra, 2003-2013 Corolla, 2009-2010 Corolla Matrix, 2004-2005 RAV4, 2002-2007 Sequoia, 2011-2013 Sienna, 2008-2012 Scion xB, 2008-2009 Lexus IS-F, 2007-2012 Yaris and Lexus ES350, 2010-2017 Lexus GX460, 2002-2010 Lexus SC430, 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2015 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles. These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. Lexus' numbers for this recall are JLI, JLJ, and JLK.

  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag, free of charge. Owners were mailed an interim notice June 17, 2015. The recall began on August 21, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Negative 2004 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

  1. Elwyn Homenick 2024-10-04

Hey there! I see you've got yourself a nice SUV! I hope you're enjoying it. I did notice that the front seats aren't the most comfortable, especially on long trips. Sitting up for extended periods can cause some neck pain. My best friend even refuses to ride in it unless I find a solution for the seats! I was thinking that an option for touring non-all terrain tires would be great, as the A/T's can be a bit loud and unnecessary for my needs. However, the engine is really flexible and versatile. The only downside is that the MPG suffers at high altitudes in the mountains. Overall, it's a great daily commuter, but I do wish the speakers were better. With just the regular CD player, they can be a bit underwhelming. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

I purchased my RAV4 based on Toyota's reputation for reliability, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues. This week, the check engine warning light and vehicle control light came on, indicating some problems. Additionally, there is a squeal underneath the car at 15 to 35 mph, and I have heard some loud rattles behind the instrument panel since driving on an improved dirt road. The visor clip is also a bit loose and of lower quality, and the ignition switch seems to be a bit loose as well. Furthermore, the wind noise when the back windows are open is quite loud and can be compared to a helicopter taking off. Lastly, the passenger window rattles when halfway down. I hope these issues can be resolved soon, and I appreciate your attention to this matter.

I really enjoy driving my RAV, but there are a few things that could be improved. The gas gauge can be a bit unreliable, so I tend to rely on the trip meter instead. Additionally, the gas mileage isn't quite what we were expecting when we purchased it, which was one of the main factors in our decision. Finally, it can sometimes rev up to 4 rpms when going uphill, which is a bit unusual. Overall, I still enjoy driving it, but there are definitely some areas for improvement.

It drives more like a sports car than an SUV. I can park where you can't. Despite its small size and nifty handling, I can fit some amazingly big items in it.

I'm not usually a fan of foreign cars, but this Toyota is a dream come true for American car manufacturers. It has excellent eye appeal, great handling, and excellent gas mileage for an SUV, even a mid-sized one. The power and handling in 4-wheel drive are also impressive. The interior is incredibly comfortable, with ample room in the rear, especially when the rear seats are folded down, and even more so when they are folded down completely to the rear floor. I can't say enough good things about it, and neither can my wife, who does most of the driving. I just wish that American manufacturers could produce something this good at these prices.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I picked up my car on 10/6/2003 and traded in my 2001 Rav4. I'm really happy with my new vehicle because it has more pep, which makes it easier to drive. The handling and ride comfort are also improved, and while it's not completely quiet, there's definitely less tire and wind sound than my 2001. Plus, there are many new safety features to give me peace of mind. The interior is really comfortable and the materials are good quality. Thanks for reading!

I see that you have had mid-size SUV's previously and now you love the RAV4. I understand that you traded a Chevy Impala sedan for it. I'm glad to hear that you will like the AWD in the snow and that the gas mileage is slightly better than an Impala. The RAV4 sits up higher than a regular sedan, making it very comfortable and fun to drive.

What a great vehicle! Toyota is known for its extreme reliability, and the 04 Rav4 is no exception. With 109,000 miles on the clock, it's just as sturdy and tight as the day I brought it home with only 12 miles on the odometer. I've only had to change the fan belt at 52,000 miles and the brakes at 100,000 miles - that's it! Toyota's durability really shines through in these vehicles. It's amazing that after 109,000 miles, there are no rattles or little noises. The seats have just been broken in and feel a lot more comfortable now than when they were new. The styling is classic Toyota - laid back and not flashy.
