The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 2017 Toyota Rav4 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Toyota RAV4, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Steering Pulls To One Side:
    • Owners have reported that the steering on the 2017 Toyota RAV4 tends to pull to one side at higher speeds, making long road trips tiring. This issue seems to be a design flaw rather than a repairable problem, as it is prevalent in cars with low mileage. No specific cost is assigned to fixing this issue.
    • To avoid this problem, potential buyers should test drive the RAV4 at highway speeds to feel for any off-center or wandering steering behavior.
  2. Transmission Issues:
    • The 2017 RAV4 has consistent reports of a clunky and rough shifting automatic transmission, particularly linked to the 6-speed automatic transmission. Owners have noted issues such as difficulty shifting from reverse to drive and drastic gear changes on hills. This problem is more related to the transmission's programming and design.
    • If the transmission fails, the repair cost is estimated to be around $4000.
    • To avoid transmission issues, it is recommended to test drive the RAV4 under various conditions, including uphill driving, to assess the transmission's behavior.
  3. Electrical Issues:
    • Electrical problems, more common in Hybrid models, have been reported by owners. These issues include the vehicle shutting off while driving and displaying a "Charging system fault" error. The resolution for these electrical issues can range from a simple software fix to a complete replacement of the electrical harness and system, leading to repair costs ranging from $200 to $6300.
    • To mitigate electrical problems, buyers should be cautious, especially with Hybrid models, and pay attention to any warning signs like sudden shutdowns or error messages.

These common problems with the 2017 Toyota RAV4, as reported by owners, highlight the importance of thorough testing and inspection when considering purchasing this vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-13
  • VIN: 2T3BFREV2HW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: About two months ago (March 2024), a smell started to appear in the vehicle cabin whenever the vehicle is being driven. It became stronger over time and is particularly strong when the HVAC system was being used. I took the vehicle to a reputed independent repair shop who diagnosed the problem as leaking AC coolant within the passenger cabin. They gave a printed diagnosis that I then shared with Toyota because the vehicle mileage is under 35,000, for assistance in fixing this problem. However, Toyota North America manager Michael from their Corporate Headquarters in Plano, Texas informed me today (May 24, 2024) that Toyota does not want to help me with the repair because I had been using an independent repair shop instead of the Toyota dealership for regular maintenance on my vehicle. I am stuck with a vehicle that cannot be used due to a strong odor of AC coolant which is potentially hazardous. An internet search reveals numerous others who have experienced similar issues with their RAV4 vehicles, so it would be in the interests of the general public to report this to the NHTSA so that action can be taken if this problem is found to be widespread.

  • Summary: Vehicle has less than 50,000 miles. We purchased this vehicle new. Both inner CV Axles are leaking grease. I expected, for a Toyota brand, for these parts to last much longer. It is difficult to know how long these have been leaking, but suspect for quite some time. Meaning these parts have been quite defective for possibly over a year or two. If these were to dry out without knowing, the CV could completely lock up--very dangerous.

Negative 2017 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

  1. Ayden Marks 2025-04-09

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Rav, which I've driven for about 50,000 km. Overall, I really like this car - it's reliable, safe, and comfortable with plenty of space. However, I did want to mention a few things that I've noticed. Firstly, I've found that the listed fuel consumption of 8L/100km is a bit unrealistic (apparently it's achieved on a test bed). Secondly, while the car is listed as having a 60 litre tank, the on-board computer only responds to 40 litres. I was told by a Toyota Manager that when the computer display shows empty and the red light comes on, there are still 20 litres in the tank (which seems a bit unprofessional). Finally, I've noticed that the cruise control doesn't hold the 'set' speed on slight down hills, whereas my wife's Mazda 2 changes gears to hold 'set' speeds. Just thought I'd share my thoughts with you. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Richard Johns 2025-02-20

My wife and I recently test-drove the RAV-4. We found the ride quality and performance to be satisfactory. However, we both felt that the interior design was a bit generic and lacked character when compared to other models such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Honda CR-V. While the trunk space was adequate, the driver's seat felt cramped and the back seats may not be very comfortable for full-size adults, unless you have the physique of a female gymnast. I want to emphasize that I have nothing against Toyota, as they make great vehicles. In fact, I own a Tundra which I will cherish forever. However, I believe that Toyota engineers could have done better with the redesign. It's more like a base hit.

  3. Maynard Ernser 2025-01-24

Although the Toyota Pre Collision System has some limitations, it is important to note that it can still be a helpful tool in certain situations. It is worth noting that the emergency brake system will beep to alert you, but the PCS will not reduce or stop for you. Additionally, the radar may not detect a vehicle in front of you at night. However, the PCS will beep if the vehicle in front of you is completely stopped during the daytime, and sometimes when approaching at about 20 mph. It is important to keep in mind that the reaction time to take action may be too short for some people to react and it may not avoid a collision. The rear vent A/C panel is located on the front dashboard, which may not be as efficient as other automakers' rear vent A/C systems. The master window switch compartment has only one illuminated button, which is the driver's side, making it difficult to find switches at night. The flooring material is made of a cheaper fabric, which may not be as durable as other materials. The LED headlights may not be brighter than regular halogen bulbs, but they still have their advantages. The interior, such as the dashboard and overall design, is made of hard plastic and may not be as high quality as other vehicles in its class. However, the acceleration, steering handling, ride comfort, and cabin noise levels are good and acceptable. The navigation system map may be a bit confusing in terms of display, but this could be due to personal preference or familiarity with other systems. Overall, the Toyota Pre Collision System and the RAV4 have their strengths and weaknesses, and it is important to consider all factors when making a decision on a vehicle.

  4. Roger Hansen 2025-01-21

I recently rented a RAV4 AWD LE from a Toyota dealer while my 2004 4Runner was in the shop. Although the seats were comfortable, I found the hip bolstering made it difficult to exit the vehicle. The stereo sounded decent at a stop or stop light, but the sound quality decreased as the speed increased. The RAV4's nimbleness is due to its short wheelbase, and I was able to achieve around 24 MPG with lots of city driving. However, I found the noise level to be a deal breaker, especially on rough roads. In comparison, I had a 2017 Ford Fusion hybrid the previous day, which was luxury quiet on any road surface. I also used to own a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, which was quieter and more enjoyable to drive than the RAV4. I hope this information helps with your decision!

We purchased our 2017 Rav4 LE brand new from the dealership and have driven it for 33k miles. Unfortunately, we have recently experienced some transmission issues such as hard shifting and delayed shifting until 6k rpm. Additionally, we had a problem with our braking system. Despite these issues, we initially enjoyed the comfortable seats and decent gas mileage. However, we did notice that the car collects dust and dirt easily and the radio and headlights could use some improvement. We also noticed that the paint seems to chip easily after just 6 months. Overall, we have had some challenges with our Rav4 and have been disappointed with the build quality.

Positive 2017 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

I noticed a few things that could be improved with the car. For instance, the dash can be difficult to see if you're wearing sunglasses, and the panel lights don't turn up high enough to see the speed. Additionally, the USB port stopped working after only 2000 miles. I also wish there was a power lift for the back, as my wife has trouble closing the door when it's open. It's a shame that LE only comes with black interior, as the seats are comfortable but show dirt easily. The headlights could also be brighter, even on high beam. I think it would have been worth investing in the XLE model. However, there are some positives to the car as well. It's quiet, has a good ride, good gas mileage, and feels safe to drive. Plus, it's a Toyota!

If you're looking for a small SUV, the Toyota RAV4 is definitely worth considering. The RAV4 has come a long way since the early 2000s, when my brother-in-law owned one. It's now stylish, modern, and high-tech, with a smooth ride. The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, paired with a 6-speed transmission, provides great performance while still being fuel-efficient. And with Toyota's current offer of 0% APR for 60 months, it's an amazing deal that's hard to pass up. This is actually my fourth Toyota, and I can say that Toyota consistently produces reliable vehicles. I've been driving my 2017 Toyota RAV4 XLE FWD for over a year now, and I'm extremely pleased with this compact-crossover SUV. It's quiet and smooth, with good acceleration, and the instrument panel is well laid out. There's plenty of room to seat five people comfortably, and my fuel bill has been reduced almost in half compared to my previous Toyota (4Runner). I really appreciate the new features, like the backup camera, Bluetooth, LDA (lane detection alert), and push button to open and close the liftgate. The Bluetooth is especially amazing - I can connect my iPhone and listen to my favorite tunes, and use the phone to make or receive calls hands-free. Overall, my RAV4 is an absolute joy to drive!

(Update as of May, 2021) I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the Toyota RAV4. While my wife and I have been pleased with our purchase, we have noticed some issues with the tires. Unfortunately, all four tires have started to crack near the rim and need to be replaced, despite only having 20,000 miles on them. Despite this, we have found the RAV4 to be an excellent compact SUV, especially compared to the 2011 model we previously owned. The new XLE version is much quieter and has a smoother ride. We have also been impressed with the Entune sound system, which works seamlessly with both Bluetooth and the lightning/USB connection for music and calls. On the mechanical side, the RAV4 has good pickup and has kept us in the 30-31 mpg range on our two highway trips thus far. Overall, we are extremely pleased with our purchase and expect to enjoy the RAV4 for quite some time. If I had to suggest any improvements for the XLE level, it would be an additional USB port either in the console or in the rear of the console, the option for heated seats, and a wider choice of cloth seat and dash colors. (Update - May 2020) I am happy to report that my opinion of the RAV4 has not changed since my initial review. It is still a great compact SUV! (Update - December 2022) I am pleased to say that we have now driven up to 26,000 miles and have not encountered any issues. While we do wish it had Apple Car Play, we are still very satisfied with our purchase.

The car is quite comfortable with ample leg room both in the front and back. It's worth noting that the XLE model does not come with power seats, power lift gate (trunk door), and power tilt outside mirrors when going in reverse, which can be a bit disappointing. Additionally, the infotainment system can be a bit confusing and time-consuming to program. While the ride can be a bit noisy at around 50 mph, the suspension is soft and provides a nice ride.

The RAV4 is a highly rated SUV, and the Platinum edition is not only well-equipped but also fun to drive. If you're considering purchasing this vehicle, I recommend adding either the carpeted car mat package or the all-weather mat package, as they are some of the only add-ons available due to the extensive standard features. Additionally, the cargo net is a great option to prevent items from falling out of the rear when the lift gate is opened, and the retractable cargo cover is easy to use. It's worth noting that the vehicle comes with two years of free service, and the dealership offers free oil changes once a year or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. They also provide free tire rotations every six months, which is recommended for AWD vehicles.
