The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 2005 Toyota Rav4 problems

The Toyota RAV4, introduced in 1994, is known for its reliability and durability. However, some model years have been associated with specific problems. This article discusses common issues with the Toyota RAV4, focusing on the 2005 model year.

Excessive oil consumption is a widespread problem in the 2005 RAV4, as reported by many drivers. The main suspect for this engine's oil consumption problem is the piston ring design, specifically the oil control ring (or scraper ring), which is responsible for removing excess oil from the cylinder wall. In the 2AZ FE engine, the oil control ring does not scrape enough oil away, leading to increased oil consumption.

Steering wheel problems, including clunking or clicking noises during turning, have also been reported in the 2005 RAV4. This issue can be caused by loose or worn-out steering components, such as tie rods, bushings, or the steering rack itself. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these problems before they become severe.

The 2005 RAV4's brake system has also been reported to have issues, including the vehicle accelerating when the brakes are hit, which can be a serious safety concern. This issue may be caused by a malfunctioning brake system or a problem with the vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU).

In addition to these specific issues, the 2005 RAV4 may also experience general problems common to its generation, such as transmission issues, engine problems, and defective steering shafts. These problems can be more prevalent in certain model years, and it is essential to be aware of them when considering purchasing a used RAV4.

When buying a used Toyota RAV4, it is crucial to thoroughly inspect the vehicle for any signs of excessive wear, damage, or neglect. This includes checking for rust, inspecting the suspension and brakes, and ensuring that the engine and transmission are in good working order. It is also essential to check the vehicle's maintenance history and ensure that all recommended services and repairs have been performed on time.

In summary, the Toyota RAV4 is a reliable and durable vehicle, but certain model years, including the 2005 model, have been associated with specific problems. When considering purchasing a used RAV4, it is essential to be aware of these issues and thoroughly inspect the vehicle to ensure that it is in good condition and has been well-maintained.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
  • VIN: JTEGD20V950
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Very often, while driving at normal speeds around curving and hilly roads, the traction control light comes on. It even locks the speed until the light goes off. And sometimes the VSC (Vehicle stability control) light comes on and takes control of the car. When the warning lights go off, the car returns to normal. I took the car to Kauai Toyota Service Department. They said that they cannot troubleshoot the problem until one of the lights stay on continuously. It is a little disconcerting when this happens while driving. I love this car and what to keep it. But I want to get to the problem and fix it. Is it possible for a repair facility to use a computer to back track the alarms and pinpoint the problem? Thanks for your time and response.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-05
  • VIN: JTEHD20V156
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR APPROXIMATELY 50,000 OF THE 255,000 MILES ON MY RAV4. IT HAS BEEN ON IT SEEMS MOSTLY BECAUSE OF OXYGEN SENSORS AND RELATED EMISSIONS "ISSUES" AND THIS HAS COST ME THOUSANDS OVER THE YEARS IN DIAGNOSTICS, TROUBLESHOOTING, AND MASKING OTHER PROBLEMS THAT REALLY WERE OCCURRING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON SO MUCH THAT IT'S HARD TO TELL WHEN THERE REALLY IS A PROBLEM. RECENTLY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON FOR ABOUT 9 MONTHS. THE MECHANIC CODES REVEALED THAT IT WAS RUNNING TOO "RICH." I PUT IT ON "NON-OPERABLE" FOR REGISTRATION PURPOSES WHILE I AGAIN TRIED TO FIGURE OUT WHY. ONE DAY (ON A TEMPORARY MOVING PERMIT) I WENT TO GET GASOLINE AND FILLED THE TANK HALFWAY. A FEW MILES LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF, FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I WENT TO GET A SMOG CHECK, AND WHEN I ASKED ABOUT THE FAIL POLICY AT THE STATION, THE ATTENDANT SAID, "THESE TOYOTAS ALWAYS PASS THE EMISSIONS, AS LONG AS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ISN'T ON." HE WAS RIGHT, AND MY RAV4 PASSED WITH PERFECT EMISSIONS COMPLIANCE. IN THE PAST I HAVE REPLACED MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER, ALL THE OXYGEN SENSORS, AND EVENTUALLY THE ENTIRE EXHAUST MANIFOLD IN ORDER TO GET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO GO OFF AND PASS A CA SMOG CHECK. SOME YEARS AGO MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF. IT WAS LEAKING OIL, AND MY MECHANIC SAID JUST TO MAKE SURE IT HAD ENOUGH OIL IN IT UNTIL I COULD AFFORD TO FIX THE "LEAKY GASKETS." BUT THE PROBLEM WAS REALLY A FAULTY OIL PUMP, AND THE ENGINE SEIZED. I HAD A REBUILT ENGINE PUT IN, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. THE TOYOTA RAN FINE FOR 6 MONTHS. THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. IN ALL OF THIS, TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE ACCEPTS NO FAULT. THEY SAY I SHOULD COMPLAIN TO NHTSA, AND THEY DON'T HAVE ANY RECALLS. I HAVEN'T HAD SUCH AN UNRELIABLE CAR SINCE MY 1984 CHEVY CHEVETTE. MY NEXT CAR WON'T BE A TOYOTA.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-28
  • VIN: JTEGD20V256
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY 2005 RAV4 THAT HAS BECOME SO FREQUENT THAT I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE OPERATING THE VEHICLE. WHEN I AM DRIVING BETWEEN 30-50 MPH, AND THE ROAD MAKES A SLIGHT CURVE, MY VSC WARNING LIGHT COMES ON AND I LOOSE STEERING CONTROL UNTIL I REMOVE FOOT FROM ACCELERATOR. ISSUE BEGAN: APRIL 2018, AND HAPPENED ABOUT 2-3 TIMES A MONTH. SINCE THEN, IT HAS GRADUALLY INCREASED TO AT LEAST ONCE EACH TIME I DRIVE. APR-NOV, MOSTLY OCCURRED ON SAME SLIGHT RIGHT CURVE UPHILL SECTION OF ROAD. IT'S STILL MOSTLY THAT, BUT NOW IT ALSO HAPPENS WHEN THE CURVE IS TO THE LEFT, OR DOWNHILL THE SPEED LIMIT IS 50 MPH WITH CONSTANT MODERATE TO HEAVY TRAFFIC WEEKDAYS ABOUT 4 ' 6 P.M. I ACCELERATE UPHILL AS I MAKE A SLIGHT RIGHT CURVE, AND SUDDENLY, THE CAR DOES THE FOLLOWING: I WILL LOOSE CONTROL OF THE STEERING AND THE VSC WARNING LIGHT COMES ON. WHEN I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, THE VSC LIGHT TURNS OFF AND I REGAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING. WHEN I APPLY THE GAS, THE SAME THING HAPPENS AGAIN. THE SEVERITY OF THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL SEEMS TO DEPEND UPON WHAT PART OF THE CURVE I AM IN. AS THE ROAD IS STILL SLIGHTLY CURVING TO THE RIGHT, THE CAR'S ABILITY TO ACCELERATE GREATLY DIMINISHES. THEREFORE, I AM FORCED TO DRIVE 35-40 MPH, WHICH CREATES AN ACCIDENT PRONE SCENE FOR MYSELF AND THE DRIVERS BEHIND ME THAT ARE TRAVELING 50-55 MPH. MY COMMUTE TO WORK, I'M DRIVING WEST & THIS RECENTLY STARTED DOWNHILL, THE PROBLEM OCCURS AFTER THE HILL WHERE THERE IS A SLIGHT CURVE TO THE RIGHT. ALSO, WHEN THIS OCCURS AT NIGHT, MY HEADLIGHTS WILL DIM AT THE SAME MOMENT AND FOR THE SAME LENGTH OF TIME THE VSC LIGHT COMES ON. SINCE NOVEMBER, THIS ISSUE OCCURS IF THE ROAD CURVES EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT, UPHILL OR DOWN HILL, BUT MORE OFTEN UPHILL. OCCASIONALLY, I WILL ALSO HEAR A BEEP WHILE THE LIGHT IS ON, BUT THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED MAYBE FIVE OR SIX TIMES.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-05-05
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: DRIVERS SIDE VISOR WILL NOT STAY UP. FALLS DOWN CONSTANTLY. DRIVER CANNOT SEE WHEN IT HAPPENS. I BOUGHT MY RAV4 USED AND DIDNT NOTICE IT UNTIL MY HUSBAND DROVE IT. IT DOESN'T BOTHER ME BECAUSE I'M SHORT. WHEN MY HUSBAND DRIVES IT WE HAVE TO RIG IT TO STAY UP BUT NOTHING EVER WORKS FOR LONG BEFORE IT FALLS DOWN AGAIN. IT COULD EASILY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-03
  • VIN: JTEHD20V956
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR WILL NOT STAY IN POSITION. IT FLOPS DOWN WHEN I'M DRIVING, MAKING IT SUDDENLY HARD TO SEE. THE PROBLEM STARTED VERY GRADUALLY A FEW YEARS AGO BUT NOW HAS RAPIDLY GOTTEN MUCH WORSE. I THINK TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP WILL NOT COVER THE REPLACEMENT AND IN COST, NOR WILL TOYOTA. I KNOW ABOUT THE COMPANY BECAUSE I CALLED THEM AND THEY SAID IT'S MY PROBLEM TO FIX. HOWEVER, THIS IS A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE, AND THEY ARE IGNORING THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. THE VISOR ALONE COSTS $107.52 ! THE INSTALLATION COST IS IN ADDITION TO THIS (BTW, I SELECTED TODAY'S DATE, BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE AN EXACT DATE. THE SAME APPLIES TO THE MPH - IT HAPPENS AT ALL MPH.).

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-30
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: WHEN DRIVING I WILL PRESS THE BREAK PEDAL AND INSTEAD OF BREAKING THE VEHICLE REACTS LIKE I HIT THE GAS INSTEAD AND SURGES FORWARD. THIS HAPPENS AT SEEMINGLY RANDOM TIMES, THE LATEST WAS YESTERDAY 7-30-2018, THE TIME BEFORE THAT WAS A FEW MONTHS AGO AND I HIT A PARKED CAR BECAUSE OF IT. WAS TOLD BY A NON-DEALER MECHANIC IT MIGHT BE THE AIR INTAKE SENSOR, CLEANED IT AND IT DIDN'T HELP. TOYOTA DEALER OF COURSE CLAIMS TO NOT KNOW OF THE ISSUE. IT HAS DONE THIS ON CITY STREETS AND PARKING LOTS.

The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. Negative 2005 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

  1. Deonte Reinger 2024-10-19

My Rav4 has been a reliable car since 2006, with only a minor issue when the alternator needed to be replaced at 75,000 miles. Although there has been a persistent knocking noise in the engine, I have been able to manage it. The gas pedal has a slight hesitation, which I believe could benefit from a recall. However, once the car gets going, it is very easy to drive and handles like a go-kart.

Although my RAV is an '04, I would like to share my experience. Initially, I liked the vehicle, but I soon noticed several issues that bothered me. Firstly, the front seats were very uncomfortable, especially when driving for more than 30 minutes, and my passengers agreed. Secondly, the back seat had limited leg room, which was problematic when carrying back seat passengers regularly. Thirdly, the rear hatch door seemed flimsy, and items fell out too easily. Additionally, the cabin felt cramped, despite my being only 5'8

My wife purchased this car without test driving any others. She fell in love with it after just a 10 minute drive up the street. However, after almost 1.5 years, she has been constantly wishing for a car with more space, better gas mileage, and a smoother ride. Unfortunately, the folding back seats do not lie flat, which has been a bit of a challenge. Although this vehicle is built on the Corolla platform, it rides more like a Hummer (military version). As a result, she is quite disappointed and will not consider another Toyota.

After months of research, I decided to go for the RAV4. I am really happy with my decision and my friends and colleagues are impressed too. It's zippy, good on mileage (22mpg city/30mpg highway), compact, and has great pick-up (better than my previous v6 dodge intrepid). It's great value for the price, with great looks and performance backed by Toyota's reputation. I believe it's the best compact SUV on the market. The safety features, especially the side curtain airbags, helped me get good insurance rates and gave me peace of mind, of course.

You've been through 3 sets of front brakes, 3 sets of tires, 2 water pumps, and had to replace the Air Sensor thingy which wasn't cheap at $350. However, with just regular maintenance, you've managed to keep this little guy going. You change the oil every 7-10 thousand miles, flush the radiator fluid once a year, and change the trans fluid every 50,000 miles. Recently, you installed new struts and shocks which were long overdue and made an amazing difference in the ride. Although the sensor light kept going on the dash, you've managed to keep your car in great shape!

I absolutely adore my first RAV4 that I purchased in March of 1998 and I couldn't bear the thought of ever trading it in. When our van finally gave up, we knew we had to replace it with another RAV4. It's been such a reliable car that it seemed foolish to even consider anything else. We did think about a different Toyota, but the size of the RAV is perfect for city driving and it's so comfortable on the open road. We have three growing kids between the ages of 7 and 14 and while the older RAV had a smaller back seat, the newer one has plenty of room for all three kids and they never complain! I absolutely love the added get up and go in the 05. It's such a fantastic car that I would definitely buy it again. Who knows, maybe we'll even go for three!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to address your concerns about the gas mileage on your Rav 4. I completely understand how frustrating it can be to not get the mileage you were expecting. Have you tried any tips or tricks to improve your fuel efficiency? I'm happy to help you find some resources if you're interested. Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you!

I traded in my 2005 Scion tC for this car and I feel much safer in snowy conditions. The other night, I drove my Rav in 7 inches of snow and it handled beautifully. The traction control and safety features are definitely a plus. The auto LSD works like a charm. When I pulled into my driveway through a huge snow drift, the front wheels slid to the right. However, I put on the auto LSD and drove straight up the driveway.
