The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-22
  • VIN: 2T3P1RFVXMW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The front passenger seat is unusable as the OCS sensor has turned off the airbags for that seat. Every time the car is started, or begins driving after sitting idle for a couple of minutes, it will beep and alarm constantly for several minutes, warning me of the passenger airbag. It is a serous distraction, and now prevents me from transporting a passenger. This has been going on since June 2024, and dealer refuses to look at car due to recall. I was even willing to pay myself to make the repair. No one will touch it. The remedy was originally set for the summer time, then end of 3rd quarter 2024. Now, it’s almost a month after the end of the 3rd quarter. Thank you for your time in reviewing this.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
  • VIN: 2T3G1RFV3MW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I've seen this error message (voltage abnormality steering power low) a few times whenever we are at a stop light and begin to go. This only happens whenever the Start/Stop function is active so the engine is stopped while not moving. Then once we start going, it will show up for a second and then disappear. We have taken the car to a local shop where they said that the alternator was beyond normal use and we received a quote as they believed it was worth replacing. When we went to Toyota dealership as the alternator is still under warranty they said they didn't see anything, they would not allow us to drive the car or hold onto the break in their shop. Problem continues to persist.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-31
  • VIN: 2T3F1RFV1MW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: There is a recall on our passenger side air bag - NHTSARecall #23V-865. Toyota recall#23TA15 Bellingham Toyota verified this - and we have an indicator/problem light that is on. I am very upset becuase we were told a fix would be available in 3rd qtr 2024 and now it is 4th qtr 2024. When I called Toyota headquarters, they have no answer as to when there will be a fix. They offered a loaner - however they prohibit the use of that loaner in Canada. Additionally, we would have to pay the cost of a rental up front and then submit receipts later for reimb but they CAN't guarantee reimb. We are very low income and so we cannot front that money, NOR take a chance that it would not be reimbursed. We live right on the US/Canadian border and we go to Canada a lot to visit family - two of which are currently in the hospital/his mom and my sister. My husband is a quadriplegic and we only have this one vehicle to go back and forth with our 2 daughters. There is nowhere near enough room with his wheelchair/walker for when we all want to travel. Additionally, when it's just him and me, he can't hear me speaking to him when he has to sit in the back seat all the time. At this point, we would like Toyota to take our current vehicle back in a trade and provide us with a new car that has none of these problems.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 2T3A1RFV6MC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The power lift gate started malfunctioning maybe six months after I purchased the car new. I brought it to Toyota two or three times and they cannot replicate it because it’s a random occurrence. It will either not open and beep open an inch and beep. open foot and beep , there are no recalls. I’ve been told it happens to other people and for some reason Toyota is unable to fix this. It is very frustrating and it has been happening on a brand new car. Also, there seems to be some defect where mice are nesting and getting in to the car into the cabin air filter in quite a few Toyota models. This needs to be rectified also.

I immediately took my car into the Toyota dealership in Roseville, California and Monday I was notified that this was part of the recall for defective airbags, I was also told that there was no fix currently and there wouldn’t be one until March 2026. they said the delay was due to the fact that the problem with high humidity so they were taking care of cars in high humidity areas first and California would be later. Until then they said they would keep my car and give me a loaner which turned out to be a regular RAV rather than the hybrid which I own. I told them that was unacceptable that I bought the car for the hybrid feature and they said they didn’t have any hybrids available. I certainly hope I get a hybrid to drive for a year and 7 months! UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-29
  • VIN: 2T3G1RFV8MC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I own a 2021 RAV4 which I routinely get serviced at the Passport Toyota. On June 29, I took my car to Passport Toyota for service because the maintenance required message appeared on my car’s dashboard. The service advisor texted me a list of recommended services for my RAV4. One of recommended services was to replace the coolant bypass valve. I agreed to the service at $800. On July 3rd the check engine light came on and the car begin to overheat. I was 2 miles away and immediately drove there to inform them of the issue. They checked my car in for service, and explained to me that a hose must have come loose and was the cause of a coolant leak. When I received my vehicle, the check engine light was off, and the car seemed to be in working condition. On July 23 the maintenance required message returned. Again, I immediately drove my vehicle to the dealership and checked it into the service department. My service advisor notified me that they needed to reset the maintenance required message, and it would go away. I received my car back and the maintenance required message was no longer there and seemed to be in working conditioned. The next morning, July 24 while driving to an appointment, my car started to overheat and the check engine light came on again. This time the car was smoking. I was less than 5 miles from the dealership so I took it back to the them and checked it in for service. After having my car in for service for one week, they called me and stated that the issue was related to me having blown a head gasket, and I would need a new engine. The service department continued to do test as required by Toyota to determine the cost of a engine and how much they would cover. Three weeks later, they told me that Toyota will pay half the cost and I have to pay $3200 out of pocket with only about year warranty. I brought my car in several times and clearly mistakes and misdiagnosis were made on their part which led to the destruction of my vehicle.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
  • VIN: 2T3F1RFV6MC
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: The sideview mirrors vibrate - the part that vibrates is the actual glass inside. I have read that many other 2021 RAV4 owners have complained about the same issue. The car was taken to a Toyota dealership and they reported not being able to locate a repair kit for this issue. The vibration makes it difficult to use the mirrors when driving at higher speeds on the interstate. It puts myself and others at risk because it makes it more challenging to safely change lanes.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
  • VIN: 2T3G1RFVXMC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Undated Interim Safety Recall from Toyota, 23TB15. It has been open for months and originally said remedy available in third quarter 2024. Now we are being told that it will be a phased response and that those of us in zone 9, Western States including Colorado, will not start until March of 2026. Apparently their position is just don't use passenger seat, which is totally absurd.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: JTMN1RFV6MD
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: Purchased a 2021 Toyota Rav4 Limited and the side mirrors vibrate while driving to the point it is unsafe to use them as their intended purpose. Nationally, Toyota seems to have acknowledged the problem via T-SB-0079-20 and only covers them on vehicles with 36k miles or 36,000 miles. Our vehicle was on the dealer lot for a year and the coverage for this TSB expired in February 2024 and has over 36k miles so my local dealer has told me it does not qualify to be repaired but recognized that the issues meets the issues described in the above TSB. My complaint is that it should be made a recall and should not be something only quietly covered. No engine or warning lights to indicate this issue and no public notice from Toyota. I only discovered this TSB via online forums, Facebook groups, and reddit groups dedicated to this 2019+ model years of the Rav4 and this seems to be a rampant issue that Toyota does not want to tell people about!

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
  • VIN: 2T3F1RFV9MC
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: There is an issue that seems to be plaguing certain 2021+ Toyota models after a lot of research on this topic. My RAV4 has been operating perfectly and around 42k the Voltage Abnormality: Power Steering Low warning came on. I've had the alternator, starter, and battery tested. Alternator and starter were given a good bill of health, the battery was given a full recharge as it outputting a bit low. The battery was put back into my car and the issue still persists. The issue only occurs after the automatic shut off feature engages when fully stopped at a light or in traffic. If I drive with the feature turned off (something I have to do every time I turn the car on now) the issue doesn't happen. If the issue persists the car can become "locked" and either completely undriveable or a safety hazard to drive if the issue/warning light take full effect and engage the safety features of the car to prevent dangerous driving. Multiple people online are reporting instances of full vehicle seizure on the highway due to this issue and it is becoming a growing safety concern as most cars encountering this issue are reaching 35k+ miles when the issue seems to start occurring on certain vehicles

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
  • VIN: 4T3R6RFV5MU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Today, July 17, 2024, I received a text message from Toyota of Glendale: "There is a safety recall on your Toyota. Please call to schedule an appointment." I called Toyota of Glendale a few minutes after I had received the text message to make the appointment. However, the representative informed me that I could not make an appointment, because there still is no remedy for a possible airbag failure. They were not able to give me more specific information, so they referred me to the "Toyota Customer Experience Center" (800) 331-4331. There the representative was also unable to give me satisfactory information, except that there was a problem with the airbags and no remedy was available yet. I was told "the airbag(s) may not deploy as they are supposed to”. Regarding my obviously very justified concern that in case my vehicle gets into an accident and the airbag does not deploy, the representative continued to repeat that there was no remedy yet. I would be informed via a letter or other means once the remedy becomes available. I am completely shocked that in case of an accident there might be a problem with an airbag and Toyota can take all the time in the world to find a remedy for it. How is the possible? Something has to be done immediately about this obviously life-threatening situation.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-04
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • VIN: 4T3RWRFV0MU
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: While driving on the freeway with outside temperatures of about 89/90F, at about 67-68 mph, our passenger window randomly exploded and shattered. There was no prior damage to the window or any indication that a rock, projectile or other debris had hit the window. Prior to this incident, we had observed that the passenger window would rattle inside the door pocket/window frame when the car was in motion. When the window shattered, it did so instantly without any warning, as if it had exploded, startling us. As we continued driving, the outside air started pulling apart the shattered window, causing the broken window glass to fall apart into thousands of little pieces that ended up all over the passenger, driver, and back seats, which were also occupied with children [XXX] and [XXX] old). This was a very scary and traumatic experience for us, as things could have taken a turn for the worse and we could have been seriously injured. Luckily, we had nothing more serious than minor cuts in the aftermath. However, our family and especially our children were very affected by this incident and our car suffered damage to the outside body and some more minor damage on the inside from the glass flying off from the shattered window. We believe the rattling of the window caused it to eventually explode and shatter. We believe the rattling is due to some kind of manufacturing error: either improper installation or possibly low quality glass material or incorrect size to match the door frame or a missing part that should hold the window securely. We would like our car inspected for any further damage not visible to the eye (such as glass inside the door pocket and the safety of the door window retainer of the passenger door as well as a check of the integrity of the rest of the car’s windows to check that they are property installed and secured in place to prevent rattling. The driver side window in the car continues to rattle and we fear that this incident may occur again. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Negative 2021 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

  1. Clement Schneider 2024-11-19

I hope you're doing well! I recently drove a rented RAV4 for 3000 miles and I must say, I'm feeling quite exhausted. After reading other reviews, I realized that the automated lane assist that is on with cruise may have been the culprit. Many times, as the white line peeled off to the right for an exit, it felt like the tires were grabbing a tar line. The first couple of times it happened, it really took my breath away. At 70 MPH in the rain, it was quite spooky. I think I'll stick to driving the car myself, thank you Toyota.

I recently purchased a Rav4 xle 2021 and was informed that it had a navigation system that worked without a phone. Unfortunately, it seems that this information was not accurate. It's always a good idea to get everything in writing to avoid any confusion. Despite this frustration, I must say that I absolutely love my new car!

  3. Dagmar Littel 2024-09-01

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 has some areas that could be improved, such as gas in the oil crankcase, loud road noise, rear seats that don't fold flat, and being underpowered. However, I am confident in the overall quality and performance of this vehicle.

  4. Demarcus Stark 2024-08-14

The interior may be uncomfortable for some, and the engine can be loud and unpleasant. Additionally, the headroom is limited, and the seat cushions are small and hard. The trunk is also on the smaller side. However, the JBL sound system is of good quality. It is worth noting that a Camry V6 may have been a better purchase option.

  5. Reggie West 2024-08-01

The interior may feel a bit small and cramped, and the steering may be a bit loose. Additionally, the seats are on the smaller side and the ride can be a bit stiff. Some may find the door handle awkward and the interior layout could be improved. It's worth noting that even as someone who isn't usually picky, I found these issues to be noticeable. Also, for those who are taller, it's possible that your head may hit the roof on the way into the seat, as I experienced at 5'8

Positive 2021 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

I'm glad to hear that you haven't experienced any stability issues with your 2021 Rav4! Have you considered the smoothness of the road you were on? It's great to hear that it rides well and even better than your previous 2011 model. I hope this one gives you the same great service as your previous car. It's important to keep in mind that everyone has different experiences and opinions, so it's always best to take reviews with a grain of salt. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!

Great HWY and City gas mileage...seeing 32 city and 36 HWY! Plenty of room!!! Bigger than previous models. Plenty of power. Get the faux leather seats on the XLE Premium - definitely worth it! Great on road trips and tailgating.

  3. August Mayert 2024-11-09

It sounds like you have a great car! It's fuel-efficient and has up-to-date features that can compete with other cars. Although the entune can be a bit annoying at times, it doesn't seem to bother you since you use CarPlay. The engine is quite loud, which is a common trait of Toyota cars, but it gives the car a rugged feel when driving. However, this can be both good and bad. It seems like there is some road noise, but that's typical of most cars. Overall, it's a reliable and safe car, as Toyota cars always are.

  4. Enrico Waters 2024-07-06

I can tell you really enjoy your 2021 Toyota XLE! It sounds like it handled the unexpected snow accumulation really well with the snow traction button. The spaciousness and style of the vehicle seem to be a great fit for you. It's also great that the radio sound is top-notch and that the car tells you how many miles you have left until you need to fill up. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

  5. Samson Schneider 2024-05-22

First of all, I don't own this vehicle, Its a rental that I've been using for a month after my car was totaled. I find a lot to like about this vehicle,.... the gas mileage is remarkable and I have averaged 35mpg in the month I have driven it with strict highway use being almost 40mpg!! I fine it to be a comfortable vehicle. It is rather quiet, a good ride, and the seats are good once you adjust them correctly for oneself. The engine has good power and generally is smooth. The steering, and overall handling are no less than good,... but here is where my concerns come into play. The lane control feature is much too sensitive and I found I was making constant steering corrections to counter what the computer thought. Turning it off made for much better steering. The active Cruise Control is also a problem as it overreaches and applies the brakes when there is absolutely no reason to do so. Keeping set to its lowest sensitivity setting helps,.. but it even activated itself when a passing vehicle would come a little too close!! The comments about engine noise are on the money. Engine performance is quite good,.. but the engine becomes a thrasher when pressed. A feature that I liked though is the warning lighting in the side mirrors letting one know that someone is in your blind spot and that and when backing up. Overall, I found this to be a darn good vehicle that I would consider buying.
