1999 Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.
It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 1999 Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4, first introduced in 1994, has been a popular choice for those seeking a compact SUV. However, as with any vehicle, certain model years have been associated with specific issues. In the case of the 1999 Toyota RAV4, there are no widespread complaints or common problems reported by owners. Instead, the 1999 RAV4 is often praised for its reliability and durability, as evidenced by the positive reviews and experiences shared by owners.
In general, the RAV4 has been known for its robustness and reliability, with many owners reporting few to no issues over the course of their ownership. For example, one owner of a 1999 RAV4 reported that, after purchasing the vehicle used in 2004 with 99,000 miles, they invested $400 in maintenance, including replacing the timing belt, water pump, and fluids. Ten years and 100,000 miles later, the vehicle was still in excellent condition, requiring only regular maintenance such as fluid changes, brake replacements, and tire replacements.
Another owner of a 1999 RAV4 shared their experience of inheriting the vehicle from their father, who had driven it for over 320,000 miles without any significant issues. The vehicle had been well-maintained, with regular oil changes and timely replacement of wear items such as brakes, shocks, and tires. Despite its high mileage, the RAV4 still had its original exhaust system, starter, alternator, and battery, and the air conditioning system was still functioning properly. The owner was considering purchasing a RAV4 of their own as a winter vehicle due to its proven reliability and durability.
While there have been reported issues with certain model years of the RAV4, such as transmission problems in the 2001-2003 models and excessive oil consumption in the 2007 and 2008 models, the 1999 RAV4 does not appear to suffer from these specific problems.
In conclusion, the 1999 Toyota RAV4 is generally regarded as a reliable and durable vehicle, with many owners reporting few to no issues over the course of their ownership. Regular maintenance and care can help ensure the longevity and reliability of this compact SUV.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-28
- VIN: JT3HP10V6X7
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: WE TOOK THE RAV4 INTO THE MECHANIC FOR A BRAKE JOB & HE CALLED US TO SAY IT WASN'T ROAD WORTHY BECAUSE THE K-FRAME WAS ALMOST ENTIRELY RUSTED THROUGH AND WE SHOULDN'T PUT OUR CHILDREN IN IT. HE SAID WE SHOULDN'T EVEN DRIVE IT OFF HIS LOT THAT IT COULD HIT A POTHOLE AND BREAK IN TWO. WE CAME & TOOK PICTURES OF ALL THE RUST. HE SAID THE K-FRAME WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE ROCKER ARMS. WE CAME HOME & RESEARCHED TO FIND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY A COMPANY LIKE TOYOTA WOULDN'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A DEFECT LIKE THIS. IT'S CLEARLY A DESIGN FLAW. IMAGINE THE CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE AND INJURY THAT WOULD OCCUR IF I HAD MY CHILDREN IN THIS VEHICLE DRIVING 65MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY (THAT I HAVE TO TAKE EVERYDAY TO GET ANYWHERE) AND THE FRAME ON THIS VEHICLE BREAKING! I HATE TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO ME OR MY CHILDREN. ALL BECAUSE TOYOTA DIDN'T MAKE SURE TO MAKE A FUNCTIONAL PART OF THE SUPPORT STRUCTURE OF THEIR VEHICLES.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-03-17
- VIN: JT3HP10V9X7
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: TODAY I WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AND MY ENGINE SURGED. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BY BRAKING AS HARD AS POSSIBLE, AND EVEN THEN IT WAS DIFFICULT TO STOP. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IT HAS SURGED WHILE BACKING UP. ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS OVER THE YEARS THE ENGINE HAS SURGED WHEN THE CAR IS SLOWING DOWN AT A STOPLIGHT OR STOP SIGN, AND USUALLY WHEN I'M GOING UNDER 10 MILES AN HOUR. VERY SCARY! THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH MY FLOOR MAT, WHICH IS FASTENED SECURELY WELL BELOW THE BRAKE AND GAS PEDALS.ALSO, I'VE NEVER BEEN DISORIENTED AND UNABLE TO TELL WHERE MY FOOT IS. I DON'T DRINK OR SMOKE, AND HAVE A GOOD SAFETY RECORD WITH STATE FARM FOR OVER 40 YEARS. I'VE REPORTED THIS SURGING PROBLEM NUMEROUS TIMES TO TOYOTA AND THEY CAN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WHEN THEY TEST DRIVE. THAT'S BECAUSE THE SURGING PROBLEM OCCURS IRREGULARLY, ABOUT ONCE IN EVERY 50 TIMES I BRAKE. AT VARIOUS TIMES I'VE ASKED OTHER DRIVERS OF RAV 4 CARS IF THEY'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM, AND SEVERAL HAVE SAID YES. TOO BAD I NEVER TOOK DOWN THEIR NAMES. I'VE ALSO REPORTED THIS BEFORE TO THE NHTSA, AND NOTHING CAME OF IT. I HAVE FAITH THAT ONE DAY THE PROBLEM WILL BE ACKNOWLEDGED. I'M A RETIRED FEDERAL OFFICIAL, SO I HAVE TO THINK THAT WRITING THIS IS NOT A WASTE OF TIME. *TR

1999 Toyota Rav4 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 1999 Toyota Rav4.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 1998-2000 RAV4, 1998-1999 RAV4 EV and Celica and 1997-1998 Supra vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant, and increases the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and owners will have the option to self-inspect, or have a dealer inspect the steering wheel on their vehicle to determine if their vehicle may be equipped with an affected inflator. Potentially affected steering wheel serial numbers will be inspected by a dealer. Based on the inspection, dealers will replace the front driver air bag inflator with an alternate one, as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 28, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall is 20TB01 and 20TA01.

- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY ELECTRIC VEHICLES. THE FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTOR, WHEN EQUIPPED WITH STEEL WHEELS, CAN DEVELOP STRESS FRACTURES IF THE LUG NUTS ARE TIGHTENED WITH EXCESSIVE TORQUE.
- Consequence: THE DISC ROTOR COULD BREAK (WHERE IT MOUNTS TO THE WHEEL), RESULTING IN A LOSS OF BRAKING ACTION ON THAT WHEEL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE DISC BRAKE ROTORS. IF THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH STEEL WHEELS, TOYOTA WILL REPLACE THE FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS AND STEEL WHEELS WITH NEW DISC BRAKE ROTORS AND NEW ALUMINUM WHEELS. IN ADDITION A CAUTION LABEL THAT READS, "USE NEW GENUINE TOYOTA ALUMINUM WHEELS." WILL BE AFFIXED. VEHICLES ALREADY EQUIPPED WITH ALUMINUM WHEELS WILL ONLY REQUIRE CAUTION LABEL INSTALLATION.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Rav. It's been such a gem for me, even after 93,000 miles! I've taken it through all types of terrain and it's held up really well. The only thing I've noticed is that in wind gusts it can feel a bit light on the road, but it's never been a problem for me in terms of staying in my lane. It's also great in the snow! I plan on keeping it for a long time because it's been so reliable. Thanks for listening!

This is my second 99 Rav 4 and I'm really enjoying it. The first one got totaled by another driver, but I was lucky enough to find another one. The only difference is that this one doesn't have a moon roof. It's also my first SUV and I'm really enjoying driving it. It's been really reliable and I haven't had to do many repairs.

I absolutely love my 1999 RAV4 5 speed! It has been my most reliable car yet. I purchased it with 41,000 miles on it and have driven it for over 100,000 miles since then. Even with my 130-mile daily commute, I never have to worry about whether my car will start or not. The only time I've had any major maintenance work done was this year for a tune-up and timing belt replacement, but other than that, it has only required regular maintenance. With its Toyota reliability, I am confident that it will last for another 200,000 miles. Plus, I get an impressive 33 miles per gallon! I would definitely buy another RAV4 without hesitation.

I'm so happy to share that my 'toy' Sport Vehicle has held up incredibly well over the years! I received it as a demo model back in 1999 and have only needed basic regular service. It's still so comfortable and quiet that I have to remind myself how lucky I am to have it. Recently, I passed it on to my daughter after getting a 2004 Tacoma, and we're both hoping it will make it to 300K!

On December 16th, 2005, I was involved in a car accident where my car collided with a 2004 Ford Explorer truck. Thankfully, both vehicles were totaled, but I only suffered minor injuries and bruises. The car did an excellent job of protecting me, and I am grateful to be alive. My significant other used to tease me about my 'putter-mobile' and its slow pick-up, but now they are thankful that I was able to walk away from the accident with just bruises. I am convinced that the Rav4 is the perfect car for me, and I would definitely consider purchasing another one if the price is right. Best regards, Maria.

The 5-speed transmission failed just as the 70,000 mile warranty expired. Despite the dealer's lack of assistance, a local repair shop was able to fix it for only $900, a fraction of the $3,300 quoted by the dealer. Based on this experience, it is not recommended to purchase the 5-speed option.

Hi there! We wanted to let you know that it's important to check for rust on the front k-frame of your car, as it can be dangerous and lead to accidents. Hi there! I've had my Rav4 for eleven years and it's been really good to me. However, I'm finding it hard to buy a new vehicle now that I'm a grandmother and need something more spacious and newer.
