2010 Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.
It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 2010 Toyota Rav4 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Toyota RAV4 2010, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Excessive Oil Consumption:
- The third-generation RAV4s from 2006 to 2012, particularly the 2006-2008 models with the 2.4-liter 2AZ FE engine, are known for excessive oil consumption. This issue is attributed to the design of the piston ring, leading to more oil consumption than usual. Neglecting to top up the oil can result in engine stress and potential damage.
- Steering Wheel Problems:
- Some RAV4 owners have experienced clunking or clicking noises while steering, indicating potential steering system issues. These problems can affect the driving experience and safety of the vehicle.
- Electrical Complications:
- Electrical problems, including the risk of electrical fires, have been reported in some 2013-2018 RAV4 models. This issue is linked to the battery slipping out of its tray while driving, causing a short circuit and a potential fire hazard. Toyota has issued recalls to address this problem.
- Paint Bubbling and Peeling Off:
- Certain RAV4s, especially those painted with Toyota's Blizzard Pearl or Super White paint, have experienced paint bubbling and peeling off the exterior metal body panels. This issue is due to poor adhesion between the paint primer coat and the metal, exacerbated by exposure to sunlight. Toyota initiated a Customer Support Program in 2019 to address this issue and extended the paint warranty for affected models.
- Other Reported Issues:
- Additional complaints from RAV4 owners include malfunctioning stereos, infotainment systems, navigation displays, and other electrical components. While these issues may not pose immediate safety risks, they can impact the overall driving experience and comfort of the vehicle.
These common problems with the Toyota RAV4 2010 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any emerging issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

I stepped firmly on brake and since car was nearly stopped I put it in to park. RPM's went up dramatically and then car reverted to normal rpms. I estimate that the entire process.I estimate that the entire process took place in about 30 seconds or less. I immediately took vehicle to the Toyota dealer and they presumably checked it out and found no problems with vehicle. They "deemed it accidental accelerator pedal engagement by customer" which it was definitely not! A similar situation occurred about 3 months earlier. That time I was pulling slowly into traffic and suddenly car tried to accelerate. I pressed firmly on brake pedal and acceleration stopped. Entire event was very brief seconds and I ignored it as a possible anomaly not requiring attention. I reported that to dealer as well when I took it in for the 10 August incident.

I am concerned that this problem is due to the design of the tread. This is a directional tire that is only designed for the right side of the vehicle. Tires mounted on the Left side of the vehicle channel water/wet snow toward the center of the tire, causing them to hydroplane under these conditions. All other road conditions: ice, light rain, snow, dry roads, the tires are noisy but do not lose traction

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-01
- VIN: 2T3ZF4DV7AW
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: [XXX] Hi, My name is [XXX]i. I own a 2010 Toyota RAV4. Which I had bought from roseville Toyota dealership. On Sunday afternoon, I was driving back to my home from South Lake Tahoe. I drove for almost 40 miles and suddenly the steering got locked while I was driving the car. There was no prior indication of steering lock lights before I start the car. The steering got locked suddenly in a winding road. I called Geico roadside assistance and towed the car and it is with Thomsons Toyota, placerville, ca. The dealer told me that they found issue with alternator and battery. The reason I am reporting this issue is it should have steering lock light turned on before I start the car, so that it could avoid potential accident situation. Request you to please investigate in this. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
SUSPENSION,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-16
- VIN: jtmyf4dv8ad
- Components: SUSPENSION,ENGINE
- Summary: This car was bought for a new driver and we have had 2 separate occasions when she has gotten somewhere and the car wont start. All the warning lights come on, but will not do anything when you push the button. We can jump it and it will start. This is not safe for a young person that could get stranded at random somewhere, and is now afraid to take it somewhere. We have checked the connections and the battery has been checked and is fine. The other complaint is the rear suspension recall. The tires were rotated and now it has a vibration, I was told that because of the recall it cannot be aligned unless things are replaced because of the terrible fix job on the recall. If something is recalled it should be fixed correctly and not be a bandaid job. There should not be a cost associated with a cheap fix that caused more problems. We purchased this vehicle because of reputation, if they are not supporting their product, then it will go and no other toyota products will be purchased.

STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-23
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JTMBF4DV8AD
- Components: STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I WAS BACKING UP, TURNING AROUND IN A DRIVEWAY. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO STOP, SOMETHING INTERFERED WITH MY ABILITY TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL, RESULTING IN A LOW-SPEED (LESS THAN 2 MPH) COLLISION WITH A SHED, MINOR DAMAGE TO THE SHED AND DAMAGE TO THE REAR BUMPER COVER OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS THE THIRD OR FOURTH TIME I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM (ONCE AT HIGH SPEED APPROACHING A RED TRAFFIC SIGNAL, I COULD NOT STOP PRIOR TO THE INTERSECTION EVEN WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE), BUT THE FIRST INVOLVING A COLLISION. I INVESTIGATED THIS (NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE TRIED) AND FOUND A BRACKET WHICH APPEARS TO BE PART OF THE BRAKE PEDAL MOUNTING THAT CONTACTS MY TOES WHEN MY FOOT IS TOWARD THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND MY HEEL IS GREATER THAN ABOUT 0.5 IN. OFF THE FLOOR (I WEAR A SIZE 12 SHOE). WHEN THIS HAPPENS, I AM UNABLE TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL.*DT *TR THE CONSUMER PROVIDED PHOTOS OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-04-20
- VIN: 2T3YF4DVXAW
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: INTERMITTENTLY, MY 2010 RAV4 ENGINE TURNS OFF, WHILE DRIVING, AND THEN TURNS BACK ON SHORTLY AFTER. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AS YOU LOSE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES, MEANING VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND STOP. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION. NEVER HAD IT CUT OUT AT A STOP LIGHT. I'M THINKING IT'S THE ECM. THE CAR'S MAINTENANCE IS VERY UP TO DATE. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS VEHICLE AND IT HAS HAPPENED TO HER NUMEROUS TIMES. I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT ONCE, SHORTLY AFTER GETTING THE CAR FROM THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I ASKED THEM ABOUT IT AND THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO OFFER ANY SUGGESTIONS, OTHER THAN I COULD PAY THEM TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE NO ERROR CODES REGISTERED WHEN THIS HAPPENS, WHICH IS WHY I THINK IT'S THE ECM. TOYOTA HAS UPGRADED THE CODE LEVEL FOR THE ECM TWICE, SO I'M THINKING THERE ARE ISSUES THEY ADDRESSED IN UPGRADING THE CODE. I JUST CAN'T FIND WHAT THOSE UPGRADES FIXED ANYWHERE ONLINE. MY DAUGHTER IS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR, AND IF THE DEALERSHIP ISN'T WILLING TO TALK TO TOYOTA FIRST ABOUT THE PROBLEM, I'M NOT GOING TO SHOVEL MONEY INTO THEIR POCKETS TO TINKER AROUND WITH IT...IT HAS TO HAPPEN IN THEIR PRESENCE, AS THEY SAY...
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-17
- VIN: JTMRK4DV8A5
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: REGARDING NHTSA CAMPAIGN: 13V383000 FOR 2006-2011 TOYOTA RAV4 THE ACCEPTED REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR THE ABOVE REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN IS FLAWED. ON MY VEHICLE, THE EFFECT OF PERMANENTLY DISABLING THE REAR TOE ADJUSTMENT HAS GREATLY INCREASED MAINTENANCE AND OPERATING COSTS AND HAS POTENTIALLY DEGRADED THE SAFETY OF ALL VEHICLES OF THIS TYPE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED GREATLY ACCELERATED WEAR OF THE RUBBER SUSPENSION COMPONENTS AND TIRES RESULTING IN THE REQUIREMENT OF A COMPLETE REAR SUSPENSION REBUILD. MY CONCERN IS THAT OTHER VEHICLES OF THIS TYPE THAT ARE NOT MAINTAINED TO STANDARDS DUE TO COST, OR HAVE HAD THE RECALL REVERSED TO MITIGATE THE FINANCIAL IMPACT, AS I HAVE DONE, ARE OPERATING IN A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. IN EFFECT THIS CAMPAIGN HAS CREATED A COST BARRIER TO PROPER MAINTENANCE OF CRITICAL SAFETY SYSTEMS. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE, AND THEY HAVE NO INTEREST IN INVESTIGATING, REVISITING OR OFFERING OTHER SOLUTIONS TO THIS ISSUE AS THE RECALL REPAIR PROCEDURE WAS QUOTE "APPROVED BY THE GOVERNMENT".
2010 Toyota Rav4 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 14 recalls for different components of the 2010 Toyota Rav4.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Toyota RAV4 vehicles manufactured October 31, 2005, to September 7, 2010, and 2010 Lexus HS250h vehicles manufactured July 6, 2009, to August 26, 2010. The affected vehicles have rear suspension arms (rear tie rods) with adjusting lock nuts that may have been improperly tightened after servicing. As a result of being loose, the arm may have thread damage and may rust, possibly leading to the failure of the arm and an abrupt change in the vehicle's alignment.
- Consequence: Failure of the rear tie rod could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners and dealers will replace both rear suspension arms and encapsulate the locknuts, free of charge. The recall began on September 30, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are G0V for Toyota vehicles and GLK for Lexus vehicles. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-383, in which some vehicles were only inspected, sealed, and did not have both arms replaced. The affected vehicles were previously recalled under 13V-383, but did not have both rear suspension arms replaced at that time. Those vehicles need to have both arms replaced as part of this recall remedy.

In the affected vehicles, water may drip onto the joint that connects the wiper linkage to the wiper motor.
- Consequence: Over time, the dripping water may cause corrosion and wear at the joint, potentially resulting in the separation of the wiper linkage. Once this occurs, the wipers would not function, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water diverter channel. In addition, a new wiper linkage with a wiper motor crank arm will be installed. The wiper linkage will have a protective cover over the wiper linkage joint to minimize water splash and a retainer ring to prevent the wiper arm from separating from the wiper motor. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service number at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:SEAT HEATER/COOLER
- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Prius and Corolla, 2009-2011 Venza, 2006-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2005-2011 Sienna and Sequoia, 2006-2011 Tacoma 4x2 and 4x4, Camry, Highlander, Tundra 4x2 and 4x4, and 2007-2011 Rav4 and 4Runner. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.
- Consequence: Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.
- Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006 through 2011 RAV4 and 2010 Lexus HS250h passenger vehicles manufactured from October 2005 through September 2010. If the nuts for adjusting the rear wheel alignment are improperly tightened during service, the rear suspension arm (rear tie rod) may develop unwanted movement and rust leading to thread damage and eventual failure. Failure of the rear tie rod will cause an abrupt change in the vehicle's alignment.
- Consequence: Failure of the rear tie rod could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tie rods and replace any that have rust or corrosion on the alignment adjustment threads. All of the rear tie rods will then be encased in an epoxy to prevent future environmental damage. Due to limitations in parts, the recall remedy will be launched in phases from September 2013 through mid-April 2014. All owners will receive notification of the recall, with most receiving second notifications when parts are available in their area. IMPORTANT: This recall supersedes Toyota and Lexus recall 12V-373. All vehicles that have been inspected and remedied under the previous recall need to be re-inspected and have the appropriate remedy applied.
- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
- Summary: Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
- Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.
- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new 2010 Rav4 limited! Despite the recent Toyota recall, it's great to hear that you would buy again as they've handled the situation well so far. It sounds like this car really stood out to you with its superior driving and visibility compared to the CRV, which was your #2 contender.
-
Just traded my 2009 Toyota Camry in for this wonderful SUV and I absolutely love it! I feel like I have tons of room, endless storage space, and it handles very well. It's a very smooth ride. Although I got the Base model, it's still the greatest car I have ever had! I did some research on the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, and I think I made the greatest decision ever!
-
You've got yourself an excellent car with great gas mileage! It's got lots of leg room and storage space, and the 120v power plug in the car is a great feature too.

Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that the check engine light issue you're experiencing will be covered by your warranty. Also, I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the ride and handling of your SPORT model! It's great to hear that it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do and handling corners so well without tilting in the curves.

I would suggest that potential buyers rent this vehicle and take it on a weekend trip before making a purchase. This is how I fell in love with mine. After narrowing down my options to a RAV4 and a Nissan Rogue, I found that the RAV4 is much roomier. My kids feel that the back seat is very spacious. The RAV4 is also fun to drive and comfortable, and the interior looks more luxurious than the Rogue. However, I did have some difficulty with the pricing at Toyota dealerships, as many were not willing to negotiate much off the sticker price and some were even a bit arrogant about it.

I am confident in amending my review after 3,500 miles. Despite the recall issues, I have a Denso pedal and my car is not on the list. I believe that Toyota's quality problems extend beyond the recalled parts. I have noticed that the transmission shifts abruptly at low speed, my driver's door handle sticks, my brakes squeak, and my gas mileage is poor (best 23.5 on the highway at speed limit). During a recall inspection at Toyota, I mentioned these issues to the service manager, who suggested putting premium gas in, despite the owner's manual advising against it. As a consumer who paid a premium price, I expect a higher level of quality from Toyota and I am disappointed to be driving a vehicle that reminds me of a Ford.

Our gas tank ruptured two years ago on a road trip and now we have another bill of $1600.00. The gas tank costs $3000.00, which is in American dollars, as we are Canadians.

I have had this car for a year and a half and unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. The brakes started making a strange noise and had trouble stopping after only 7,000 miles. This happened while I was driving with my wife and kids in the mountains on a Sunday afternoon, which was quite stressful. When I contacted Toyota, they informed me that towing was not covered under the bumper to bumper warranty and that it would cost $500.00 to tow the car to a dealership. Additionally, the tires on the car only lasted 22,000 miles and the radio turns off on its own. The dashboard lights also flicker and the car sometimes dies. Overall, I have had a frustrating experience with this car.

I purchased the Base Rav4 in August 2010 and overall, it has been a great car. However, I have noticed that it vibrates quite a bit, especially at speeds greater than 50, which can be a bit bothersome. I took it to the dealership and they tried to help by rebalancing the wheels, but unfortunately, it did not solve the issue. During a test drive with the service manager, we noticed that another new Rav4 had the same issue. I reached out to Toyota's Customer Care and while their expert mentioned that this is a common issue, they were empathetic and understanding. Although I am considering trading it in soon, I still appreciate Toyota's efforts to help. I have been a loyal Toyota customer for years and while I have noticed some quality issues, I still believe they are a great brand. Thank you for your time and attention.
