The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 2015 Toyota Rav4 problems

The 2015 Toyota RAV4 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners:

  1. Brake Problems:
    • The brakes of the 2015 Toyota RAV4 are reported to squeak or grind initially, indicating worn-out pads that need replacement to prevent rotor damage. Brake pedal seizing when depressed might be due to air or moisture in the braking system or a master cylinder issue. Brake failure has been experienced by some drivers, necessitating the use of emergency brakes, which can be risky. Fluid leakage in the brakes could be caused by hydraulic pressure issues, leading to hard clamping of brake pads to the rotors.
  2. Body-Paint Problems:
    • Owners have complained about paint chipping, rust formation, and popping of paint chips on the body of the 2015 RAV4. The paint issues start with bubbles and can lead to flaking off. Rust formation is particularly noted on unfinished parts like lower doors and hatch areas. Toyota has acknowledged these problems and initiated recalls to address them.
  3. AC/Heater Problems:
    • Users have reported heater issues in the 2015 RAV4 due to refrigerant leaks, electrical climate control malfunctions, or problems with the conditioning compressor. It is recommended to replace the air conditioning components system to rectify these issues. Electrical climate control problems can arise from a malfunctioning blend door that regulates air conditioning and heating.
  4. Transmission Problems:
    • Transmission problems in the 2015 Toyota RAV4 include leaks, torque converter issues, and jammed clutches. These issues can lead to delayed or harsh engagement of the automatic transmission, especially when shifting into reverse at higher mileage. Professional transmission shops can address these problems at a reasonable cost.

These problems reported by owners highlight some of the key issues faced by users of the 2015 Toyota RAV4. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help mitigate potential risks and ensure a smoother driving experience.

Negative 2015 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

  1. Solon Abernathy 2024-11-25

The car has a few issues that need to be addressed. The brakes are not very responsive and require pumping to bring the pedal up. The steering is nimble but the car tends to wander around lanes at highway speeds. The radio also has some issues with changing modes and volume going up and down by itself. However, the car is cute and nimble around town and is the best snow vehicle we have ever owned. The rear camera is great at night but not very useful during the day or in rain. The constant chimes and alerts can be overwhelming at times and the windshield is leaking some clear polymer. Despite these issues, the car still runs well and the mileage is improving. There are a few things that could be improved such as the lack of backlit switches and poor interior lighting. Additionally, the steering wheel is not very adjustable. Overall, the car has potential to be a real winner if these issues are addressed. The information panel could use some improvement as it is quite small. Additionally, the interior panel lights dim too much, making it difficult to see the display when the headlights are on. The infotainment screen is also not very adjustable and can only be seen properly at night, which can be inconvenient. Lastly, it is important to be cautious of the power tailgate lift tubes as they are positioned in a way that could cause injury. It's worth noting that I have a Dodge Grand Caravan that does not have this issue.

Have you ever tried test driving a car before buying it? We recently needed more cargo space to take our daughter and her dorm stuff back to school, which was 100 miles away. We were considering purchasing a new Rav, but we found that a 10-minute test drive was not enough to make a decision. So, we decided to rent a 2016 Rav4 Limited, which was hard to find for rent. After driving it, we found that it rode the same as a 2015 model we had driven before. The car served its purpose in two ways: it got the job done and it convinced us to keep our 2011 Rav. Why did we decide to keep our old car? Well, if you mostly drive on smooth highways, the new Rav is okay. However, when driving around town or commuting on anything else, it rides like a brick (even with the correct tire pressure). You feel every imperfection on the road. Another annoyance is the 6-speed, which in theory makes sense, but it constantly hunts for gears. The 2015/2016 models just have an overall cheap feel inside and out, including fake leather. In comparison, our 2011 Rav feels solid, has no gear hunting, no squeaks or rattles, a nice ride, real perforated leather, and great JBL sound. We have owned many fine Toyotas, including our current Rav and 2009 Camry Hybrid, but we think that corporate greed has caused their quality to decline in recent years, including far too many recalls, some of which still don't have a fix years later, which speaks volumes right there.

  3. Ricky Sporer 2024-06-15

I purchased a new 2015 RAV4 in February and unfortunately experienced some issues from the start. The door locks were working intermittently, which was a big safety concern for me. Despite my complaints being initially met with disbelief or being told that I was pressing the wrong button, I took it into the service department four times before they finally figured out the problem. One of the times, they simply let it sit in the service bay for an hour and a half, then told me they had checked it out and everything was now working fine. It turned out that the actuator in the front driver's door was defective, which was something I had no idea about until then. Since then, I have experienced two other factory defects. Although the car looks great, drives great, and rides comfortably, I am disappointed with the issues I have faced and will not be purchasing another Toyota.

I recently traded my 2006 4 Runner for a Rav4 and was pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of the vehicle. While it may be slightly smaller, the Rav4 offers great gas mileage and is more affordable than other vehicles in its class. If you have a larger family, you may want to consider a bigger vehicle, but for couples or small families (or retirees like myself), it is perfect. I highly recommend getting the Convenience Package as it makes driving much more enjoyable. Although I have been driving it for over 6 months, I do wish it had power seats. I ultimately decided on a Subaru Crosstrek and find it to be 90% better than the Toyota Rav4 in terms of vision, handling, and comfort on long trips.

I recently took my 2006 RAV in for its 120,000 mile maintenance and had the opportunity to drive a new 2015 Rav 4 for the day. While the car had some nice features, I did notice some design changes that were unfortunate. For example, the seat was higher, the roof was lower, and the steering wheel moved less, which could make it uncomfortable for anyone over 6 feet tall to get in and out of the driver's seat. This was a shame because one of the reasons I bought the '06 Rav 4 was because of its ample headroom and easy entry. Additionally, visibility from the driver's seat, which wasn't ideal in my 2006 Rav4, was even further from ideal in the '15. The ribbon windows in my '06 model have become mere slits in the '15, and the lack of a backup camera is a risky thing in the Rav 4. I had one installed after reportedly backing into objects hidden from view. Clearly, the design of the '15 Rav 4 is not ideal for everyone, but it does have some nice features, such as a decrease in road noise.

The car's performance on corners is subpar and it produces a significant amount of noise at freeway speeds. The JBL Sound System is not up to par, with the volume fluctuating from too loud to inaudible. The navigation system is not reliable and struggles to navigate major highways. It may be more beneficial to invest in an aftermarket sound and navigation system rather than paying extra for the car's system. While it is a suitable car for town and work driving, it may not be the best option for long trips.

Rain and snow gathering in the hood channels and spraying the windshield is temporarily restricting visibility. Additionally, the Bluetooth connectivity is inconsistent, with calls sometimes taking several attempts to connect. These issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and troubleshooting.

I drove this car for a little over a year and never had any problems. I loved it so much, even though I put it through a couple of fender benders. One time, I was hit in the driver's door by a 90s RAV4 going 35 mph, which left a sizable dent, but thankfully my passengers and I were fine. Unfortunately, I had to part ways with it when I was hit by a drunk driver, flipped twice, and landed upside down. I was very shaken up, but thankfully I walked away completely unharmed, with only some bruising from the seatbelt. Afterward, I had a 2015 LE model, which was also a beautiful car, but didn't hold up as well on slick roads. For comparison, I drove a 2012 VW Passat for 8 months and loved it, but not as much as my RAV4. I also had a 2016 Hyundai Tuscon for a few months, which I didn't enjoy as much. In my opinion, everyone should drive a RAV4, or at the very least a Toyota.

When backing up on a rainy evening, it can be tough to see what's behind the vehicle because the camera lens gets wet. Additionally, the tires that came with the vehicle when purchased are quite noisy and seem to get louder as the mileage increases. However, overall, I am very happy with this well-built vehicle that handles well.

I purchased this car three weeks ago and it has been fantastic so far. The engine runs smoothly and quietly. The eco, normal, and sport modes work great and you can feel the throttle change dynamics. I mostly use the econ mode for city driving to save fuel and sport mode for passing maneuvers. The steering is typical of a Toyota, and the suspension is on the firm side but great on the freeway with very little body roll. The cabin is quiet and comfortable. On a recent trip from Vegas to LA and back, I averaged 28 miles per gallon. In mostly city driving, I got 25 miles per gallon. The navigation system is great, but the voice command could be improved as it sometimes does not pick up what you are saying. The only features missing are adaptive cruise, forward collision mitigation, and a dual chrome exhaust, which I wish Toyota had included.
