2018 Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.
It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01

- Summary: I received the recall notice a long time ago (DEC 2023?) I contacted Toyota 07/08/24 and they advised that a remedy was still being sought with a solution mid 2024? We are now in October and I have been told my battery should be replaced before it doesn't start. How long can they work on a solution? It seems the Toyotas affected will be retired before they do anything. Please address this concern for Toyota owners.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- VIN: JTMBFREV0JJ

- Summary: There has not been a remedy for this recall for almost a year now. We were notified of the recall in Nov23'. Toyota said they'd have a remedy by mid 2024. It's now Sept2024 with no remedy in sight. It's not fair to the paying customers that we're just driving around vehicles that have the potential to actually explode. When discussing with my local Toyota dealership (in their defense, this was around Feb24' ), they said they'd be charging me for the pre-remedy inspection despite Consumer Advisory 21TG01.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-18
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 2T3ZFREV5JW
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: My car caught on fire due to the battery shifting in February. I have all documentation of the process it took for Toyota to ever reach out just to tell me there was nothing they could do. I had to file a claim through insurance and pay some out of pocket for a fix. All for them to still have no remedy almost a year later. I can’t trade it in or else I’ll be under and have nearly 4-5k in negative equity since the car is now worth nothing due to the safety recall.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
- VIN: JTMDJREV7JD
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving my car through the mountains on a very hot day. The speed limits are 65-70mph. After driving for a couple of hours, a warning light/message appeared: Hybrid system overheated Reduced output power The car began to have trouble maintaining speed. At one point I had to pull over and wait a while because the car became unresponsive to the accelerator. After waiting a bit, I was able to continue, but only at speeds around 40mph. I put my blinkers on because I was afraid of being hit by the other vehicles/trucks going 70. I took the car to a dealer outside of Pittsburgh and they could find nothing wrong, and no indication in the car's computer that anything had happened. I took the car to my local dealer when I got back home to Maryland, and they could find nothing. If they can't find what's wrong, they can't fix it. I have been in contact with Toyota customer service and they have no answers other than "see if it happens again". I am concerned that the car is no longer safe to drive if the temperature outside is high, and I need to go up steep hills.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JTMRJREV6JD
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I tried breaking and was on a hill with a small incline stopping behind a car as a pedestrian was crossing. When I pushed on the breaks lightly the car didn't break. So I pushed harder as the car in front of me was a few feet. When I pressed harder on the breaks the car actually accelerated and hit the car in front of me. The car made a strange noise and the warning that I was close to another car flashed on but the breaks failed to work at all. I had my breaks checked about 2 months ago when I had the tires changes and they said they were fine for now and just to have them looked at next tire rotation to evaluate. I've nver had issues with my breaks and my car took some damage. It was pretty terrifying.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
- VIN: JTMRJREV7JD
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: -Fuel leaks have been occurring since we purchased the car in April 2022. The previous owners never parked on an incline, so they never experienced the issue. -Fuel leaks when the car is parked on an incline when tank is between half full and full. -Leaks occur more often based on (1) the more full the tank is (we never top it off after the pump stops at gas station) and (2) when parked in direct sunlight. -In the photo and video from 12/15/23, it was a cool day (57 degrees), but the warmth from the sun, after previously being cloudy, caused expansion and the leak occurred with a half tank. -Leaks do not occur when parked with the nose facing downhill. -Safety: leaking gas is an inherent fire safety risk. Note the leak could occur while driving up a mountain. -No warning lamps or messages appear. -The car has been inspected by a Japanese car specialist and they were unable to identify the problem. -The car is available for inspection upon request. -I have a video of the fuel leaking, but that file type is not supported, so I uploaded it as a photo instead (3rd attachment). -Last photo shows difficulty of trying to clean up fuel. Permanent stains remain. Fuel breaks down the asphalt, which now has a hole in it and needs to be patched.

Negative 2018 Toyota Rav4 car reviews
Positive 2018 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

This car has more power than you would expect from a 4-cylinder engine and it doesn't strain at all.
-
I traded our RAV4-LE in for the limited edition “2018 Adventure XLE”. I cannot express how much I love the Toyota RAV4, it is truly one of the most durable and reliable vehicles on the road.
-
I recently upgraded from my 2017 Corolla LE to a 'Certified Preowned' 2018 Toyota RAV4 XLE, and I must say, it was a great decision. Although I enjoyed my Corolla, the RAV4 is a much better fit for me. The styling of the RAV4 is far superior to the new model, in my opinion. The interior is fantastic, with a clean and well-designed dashboard, comfortable seats, and a smooth ride. I'm a big fan of Toyota's safety features, which come as standard in all their vehicles. The keyless entry system works like a charm, and the power-operated tailgate, while a bit slow, is still very efficient. The only downside is that the headlights are halogen and not LEDs like my previous Corolla. I've taken a few trips in my RAV4, and I'm thrilled with how quiet and solid it feels. The 4cyl engine provides enough power for this SUV, and I'm getting around 26-27 MPG overall on city driving and 30-32 MPG on the highway with cruise control set at 70MPH. The 6-speed automatic transmission works flawlessly. The shiny silver exterior and all-black interior of my RAV4 are stunning, and the paint quality is top-notch. However, there are a couple of negatives. Firstly, the radio unit is a bit of a letdown. I have the CD player unit with XM radio but no navigation, and the Bluetooth constantly drops and disconnects my phone while I'm on a call. I've read online that this is a known issue with Toyota's radio units. The sound system is also weak, with low bass and volume power compared to my previous Corolla. Secondly, the front windshield is a bit of a challenge to keep clean and dry due to the material or coating used on the outside of the RAV4. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the RAV4 to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish SUV.I recently applied RainX on all my vehicles and noticed that the water doesn't repel as it used to. Even after getting new wipers and a fresh coat of RainX, the water just moves side to side and smears all over the glass, leaving a film and streaks of water. I find this very strange and I'm not sure how to fix it. Despite this issue, I am still very happy with my purchase. I highly recommend the RAV4 and my experience with the Toyota dealer in Orlando, FL was great.
-
Overall, this is a fantastic SUV for small families looking for top-notch safety features. The technology is impressive and sets it apart from the competition, especially since most of it comes as standard equipment. While the fuel tank could be larger, at only 13 gallons, it doesn't take away from the great MPG. If you don't need a Highlander or Grand Cherokee-sized SUV, this is the perfect fit. If you're towing a boat or driving off-road, you may want to consider other options. Having owned Jeeps in the past, I feel much more comfortable in my Toyota RAV4. I'm not sure why the Blizzard color costs more, but I'm happy with my choice. I leased my car from Sunrise Toyota North and had a great experience. Cliff and Greg were both very helpful. The 18-inch wheels on the Limited were a must-have for me.
-
I'm so glad we chose the Rav4 SE over the used Lexus RX! It's perfect for hauling gear to my video shoots and driving my friends around comfortably. The drivers seat is incredibly comfortable and it's great in all kinds of weather. Plus, it has much more storage capacity than I anticipated. Overall, it's a fantastic SUV and we plan on keeping it for a very long time.

This is from a test drive. I'm glad I decided to give this vehicle a chance based on the positive reviews and reliability scores. There were definitely some great things about it. For instance, I found the front seats to be very comfortable. The acceleration is completely adequate and it maneuvers well. It had the best rear cargo area of all the SUV's I tested, and the low lift height is great if you have heavy objects to load. The safety features, like lane assist, worked perfectly. Now, on to the areas that could use some improvement. Firstly, the engine noise and transmission shifting could be better. I didn't like the shifting on the transmission, and the vehicle whined and reached too high RPM's for the gears, making it quite noisy. It was louder than any other vehicle I've test driven this year (Ford, Chevy, and Hyundai for instance). Secondly, the technology was a bit of a letdown. Besides the safety features, the info center is very dated and the radio was mediocre. The LE only had one USB port, while just about any other SUV will have three times as many. Unfortunately, I don't think the Toyota powertrains and interiors are for me. This will probably be the last time I give them a chance.

The seals on the lower door panels of my Rav 4 are leaking, causing streams of water to run down the doors during windy rain storms. Despite visiting the Toyota dealer three times and providing photographic evidence, they insisted that this is a normal occurrence. Even after a factory representative assessed the situation, they came to the same conclusion. However, I strongly disagree with this assessment and find Toyota's response disappointing. In my experience, Honda produces higher quality vehicles overall, although their seats may not be as comfortable. If considering purchasing a 2018 Rav 4, I advise exercising caution.

I bought this car brand new in February 2018 and have been driving it every day since. I have noticed some issues with the quality of the interior, such as the dashboard, doors, console, and other parts being made of cheap plastic. The sun visors are also not very sturdy and the seats are made of black nylon which can be uncomfortable and attract everything. I have also noticed a noise when making left turns, which I will be taking in to get checked out soon. Overall, I am disappointed with the quality of the interior and regret my purchase. If I had to do it again, I would have chosen the Subaru Forester. I recommend taking your time to thoroughly inspect the Toyota Rav4 before making a purchase.

Bought a new 2018 le rav 4 to replace my 2010 rav 4 that i had purchased new . Gas mileage is worse in the 2018 rav 4 and both have the same 4 cyl engine. the new 6 speed transmission is terrible . The transmissions performance alone is enough to keep me from every buying one again, revs too high at times to shift when accelerating. the safety features are much too twitchy and distracting to the driving experience. I would not buy again and this was the 5th toyota in my family .
