The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 2009 Toyota Rav4 problems

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to body and paint issues, engine problems, and drivetrain problems.

  • Peeling Paint: The most common issue found on the 2009 Toyota RAV4 is peeling paint, which typically occurs around 85,000 miles. This problem is primarily cosmetic and can cost approximately $1,000 to repaint each panel.
  • High Oil Consumption: Another issue that arises around 125,000 miles is high oil consumption, which is common in Toyota engines due to their design that consumes more oil to protect internal parts. Many owners simply check their oil regularly and top it off as needed.
  • Whining Noise from Rear End: A whining sound in the rear of the RAV4 can occur around 80,000 miles, which is usually caused by a problem with the rear differential. Repairing the coupling in the differential can cost about $1,500.
  • Engine Problems: The 2009 Toyota RAV4 has had 16 engine-related problems reported, with a total of 128 NHTSA complaints. These issues include engine stalling, rough idling, and excessive oil consumption.
  • Drivetrain Problems: There have been 7 drivetrain problems reported, with a total of 20 NHTSA complaints. These issues include transmission slipping, jerking, and difficulty shifting.

In addition to these problems, there have been 15 recalls for the 2009 Toyota RAV4, with the most serious ones related to rear suspension components, which can increase the risk of an accident if they fail. Most of the other recalls are for window switches.

It is important to note that these common problems do not necessarily mean that every 2009 Toyota RAV4 will experience these issues. Proper maintenance and regular inspections can help prevent or address these problems before they become severe.

  • Summary: We have a 09 Toyota Rav4 with a Blizzard Pearl paint that continues to fail. Apparently there were notices sent out in 2022 indicating a recall that would cover these repairs. We were unaware of these notices and continue to experience paint degradation on multiple areas of the car. I have contacted Toyota and they claim no responsibility past the 2022 expiration date. I am hoping that NTSB will reopen the recall regarding this issue. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-16
  • VIN: JTMBK31V59D
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: My son was looking to get his new tires aligned, and was informed by the mechanic that he would need to replace both side rear lower control arms, as Toyota had performed a safety recall GOV, resulting in the arms being epoxied, and therefore cannot be adjusted/ aligned. I contacted Toyota customer experience center (800 331 4331 - 1/16/2024) and she could not even call up the original recall. My question is: How can Toyota permanently remove a vehicle feature (adjustability of the suspension arms), and then require car owners to bear the brunt of re-installing the arms when you need to align your tires? This "solution" is totally unfair. I just purchased a new set of tires, and based on Toyota's "solution" I need to pay out of pocket to replace the control bars and/or damage my tires and have to replace them early. I was not able to find any other information on this issue on the web, and was wondering if Toyota had done anything to address this issue?

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-08
  • VIN: JTMBF33V99D
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My car was being seviced today for rear brakes and the Toyota dealer needed to unseal previous safety recall in order to perform the service. I'm being charged to undo the recall to perform the service and then to reapply the recall. I do not understand how this cost is not the responsibility of the manufacturer, Toyota. If there is a recall issued for an auto, shouldn't the recall correction allow for future auto maintenance where the recall doesn't need to undone and then reapplied?

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-06
  • VIN: 2T3ZK31V09W
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The rear lower suspension arms recall notice solution was replacement of arms if needed and than sealed with epoxy. Labels were applied stating the arm is no longer adjustable. The vehicle no longer can routinely get a wheel alignment at a market expense. The Toyota company suggests for further alignments go to a Toyota dealership and have a alignment done for 900.00 dollars every time you need a alignment. This is not a safe solution. This only makes owners go to their dealerships and give them thousands of more dollars for taking away a routine adjustable maintenance capability with this permanent one time fix.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2T3BF31V79W

  • Summary: My mother had the exact same issue reported in Toyota Manufacturer case 1707311582 and NHTSA report 11396355 from Feb 15, 2021. My mother had not reported to me, until it happened while I was driving her around Dec. 24, 2021, that her Rav. rev'd and accelerated when she applied the brake while leaving a parking spot. Here's what I've reported to my Toyota dealership where we bought the vehicle. Until last month (Nov. 21), the vehicle had an immaculate operation and maintenance record. To the repair shop "Twice in the past month, we've had brake failure, accelerator failure issues. The first time, my mother was pulling forward at less than 5 miles per hour in a parking lot. She pushed the brake pedal when pulling forward, but the car did not slow, the brakes did not engage, and instead, the RAV revved and accelerated forward. She crashed into the parked vehicle and incurred damages that already have been fixed by USAA at a service location in Richmond. The airbag did not deploy. Dec. 24, here in Churchland, I was driving with her. While coasting to a stop light at less than 10 miles per hour, I attempted to stop by pressing the brake. The car revved and accelerated to the light, I pressed both feet again, and the car continued to accelerate and I ended up running a red light and luckily we did not have an accident or cause the person behind us to rear end us. It was not until after my driving on Dec. 24 that my Mom told me she had an accident a month earlier and it was because she couldn't get the car to stop. She assumed it was her. The vehicle has almost 90k miles. Looking for recalls, because this is not normal for brakes to malfunction this way, I found a consumer article describing to my Mom's and my description to almost exact detail captured in Manufacturer case number provided above. That vehicle had approximately 77k miles. I will be contacting USAA to report the issue, this is clearly a safety issue."

  • Summary: The paint on my white 2009 Toyota RAV4 has been coming off. Sheets of color is peeling on the roof. I have several large (1-2 inches) bare spots on the top and many tiny ones on the body hood and doors, rusting for years. The manager of Titus-Will Toyota advised me not to do anything about it when I showed them the recall letter from Toyota and let him take pictures of the affected areas of my car. He said he would send a request and let me know about the repair decision. It has been more than two years since my complaint. I ask about it almost every time I go there for my scheduled service maintenance, and I get no answer so far. Until now, I still don’t have a response from them, and I am a little unhappy. Also, I see that I am not their favorite customer and avoided by management as they are always swamping. I showed them how bad the paint continues to come off, and the rust is awful. I could off taken care of it by now, but the manager clearly said not to paint it or do anything about it until he gets confirmation about the issue. My roof could start licking with all this rain and rust. Thank you.

2009 Toyota Rav4 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 15 recalls for different components of the 2009 Toyota Rav4.

2016-08-12
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Toyota RAV4 vehicles manufactured October 31, 2005, to September 7, 2010, and 2010 Lexus HS250h vehicles manufactured July 6, 2009, to August 26, 2010. The affected vehicles have rear suspension arms (rear tie rods) with adjusting lock nuts that may have been improperly tightened after servicing. As a result of being loose, the arm may have thread damage and may rust, possibly leading to the failure of the arm and an abrupt change in the vehicle's alignment.
  • Consequence: Failure of the rear tie rod could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners and dealers will replace both rear suspension arms and encapsulate the locknuts, free of charge. The recall began on September 30, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are G0V for Toyota vehicles and GLK for Lexus vehicles. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-383, in which some vehicles were only inspected, sealed, and did not have both arms replaced. The affected vehicles were previously recalled under 13V-383, but did not have both rear suspension arms replaced at that time. Those vehicles need to have both arms replaced as part of this recall remedy.

During the manufacturing of the Power Window Master Switch (PWMS), grease lubricant may have been inconsistently applied to the sliding electrical contacts.
  • Consequence: If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the switch, applying a lubricant if no abnormality is found. If abnormality is found, the PWMS circuit board will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 20, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is C0M.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 RAV4 vehicles manufactured October 27, 2008, to December 19, 2012 and 2012-2014 RAV4 EV vehicles manufactured July 24, 2012, to August 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, water may drip onto the joint that connects the wiper linkage to the wiper motor.
  • Consequence: Over time, the dripping water may cause corrosion and wear at the joint, potentially resulting in the separation of the wiper linkage. Once this occurs, the wipers would not function, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water diverter channel. In addition, a new wiper linkage with a wiper motor crank arm will be installed. The wiper linkage will have a protective cover over the wiper linkage joint to minimize water splash and a retainer ring to prevent the wiper arm from separating from the wiper motor. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service number at 1-800-331-4331.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006 through 2011 RAV4 and 2010 Lexus HS250h passenger vehicles manufactured from October 2005 through September 2010. If the nuts for adjusting the rear wheel alignment are improperly tightened during service, the rear suspension arm (rear tie rod) may develop unwanted movement and rust leading to thread damage and eventual failure. Failure of the rear tie rod will cause an abrupt change in the vehicle's alignment.
  • Consequence: Failure of the rear tie rod could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tie rods and replace any that have rust or corrosion on the alignment adjustment threads. All of the rear tie rods will then be encased in an epoxy to prevent future environmental damage. Due to limitations in parts, the recall remedy will be launched in phases from September 2013 through mid-April 2014. All owners will receive notification of the recall, with most receiving second notifications when parts are available in their area. IMPORTANT: This recall supersedes Toyota and Lexus recall 12V-373. All vehicles that have been inspected and remedied under the previous recall need to be re-inspected and have the appropriate remedy applied.

  • Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
  • Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
  • Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
  • Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.
  • Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. Those owners may contact Pontiac Customer Care at 1-800-762-2737.

Negative 2009 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

  1. Wellington Lindgren 2024-10-26

I have been driving Toyotas for 35 years, even before I was allowed to drive. I have owned both used and new cars, and my 2005 Rav4 was a great car. However, my 2009 limited V6 3.5 has been a nightmare. The suspension recall fix involves an epoxy seal on the links which make the adjustable links unadjustable. This means that if the rear is out of alignment, you have to pay $500+ to have the recall fix done again. I have never had to do anything other than maintenance to my Toyotas, but this one has required multiple repairs, including the third pair of shocks, ER brake cable, drive train assembly ($1400 part), and blower motor. Such a disappointment. Although it has 150000 miles on the odometer and runs great, I am done with it. After I updated my review, I started experiencing more problems with this car, including problems with the steering and recalls for the master switch for driver's side window and wiper motor. Toyota stopped making their own parts in 2006, which was a huge mistake. This car became a full-time job. As a car guru who visits dealerships 24/7, I chose to get rid of this car before it depreciated any more. I had a hard time finding a dealership that would give me decent money for the trade. The day I traded in the 2009, my 2005 limited (not a V6 and with a lot less options) was worth $2000.00 more. Although I am disappointed in the Toyota Corporation, I understand that their business decisions have affected their automobiles. Putting their dealerships in the position of not being able to be honest with customers about their cars has enabled me not to trust Toyota Corporation anymore. I was fortunate to be able to put my car up on a rack anytime I needed to check anything, but many people don't have that luxury. I see people driving their cars on the road with the suspension recall and the rear wheels out of toe, which is scary. If I get the opportunity to talk to them, most say that they did not know because they had the recall fix done!I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Toyota Rav4. While I do take excellent care of my cars, unfortunately, I've had some issues with this one. Since the last time I reviewed this car, I've noticed that the rear suspension of other 2009 Rav4 cars on the road or in parking lots seem to have their rear wheels out of toe. I've even spoken to other owners and informed them about this make and model. I believe that this car may have some safety issues. I'm not sure why Toyota thinks it's okay to drive a car around with the rear wheels out of toe. I'm disappointed to say that I will not be owning or recommending Toyota to anyone again. I hope that Toyota can address these issues and improve their products. Thank you for taking the time to read my experience.

  2. Alexys Buckridge 2024-06-13

I purchased the 2009 base model a month ago and I absolutely love this vehicle. I traded in my 2006 Kia Sorento EX 4WD vehicle that had only 71k on it, but it was a gas guzzler and performed poorly on snowy and slick roads. So far, I am averaging 24-25MPG and I am thoroughly enjoying the ride. The vehicle looks great and feels even better. In a few weeks, we are planning to take a 5-hour trip, and I am excited to see how comfortable it is on a long journey. Although it is a little slow on takeoff, it's not a big issue considering all the other great features it has to offer.

  3. Ramiro Ziemann 2024-05-13

This car had a high number of factory recalls, blind spots, and required frequent maintenance including water pump replacement every 25,000 miles and transmission replacement at 50,000 miles. Despite following all maintenance schedules, the handling was unstable and the automatic transmission was rough and hesitant. Overall, this was not a satisfying purchase.

  4. Francesco Macejkovic 2024-04-02

The gas mileage may not be the best and the 4cyl engine can be noisy. Additionally, the paint on the vehicle chips easily. It would be helpful if Toyota included a full case of touch-up paint with every vehicle. Some drivers have experienced issues with acceleration and the start-stop button not functioning properly. Toyota technicians are currently working on a solution for this problem.

  5. Floyd Sipes 2024-01-08

While this vehicle may not meet everyone's expectations in terms of fuel efficiency and noise levels, it's important to note that every car has its own unique set of strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, it's worth considering that Toyota's claims may not always align with individual experiences. That being said, it's unfortunate to hear about the paint chipping and sound system issues. We understand that these factors can be frustrating and we hope that Toyota can address these concerns in the future. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.

Positive 2009 Toyota Rav4 car reviews

  1. Dangelo Schmidt 2025-01-02

Driving this car is such a joy! The acceleration is fantastic, especially for a 4 cylinder engine. On the highway, it gets an impressive 35 mpg and averages about 25-26 mpg with mixed driving. While it can be a bit noisy on the highway, it's nothing that a little music can't fix. Although the interior could be better, it's still pretty good for a base model, especially when compared to the Forester or the CRV. And let's not forget the bold and striking exterior, especially in black!

  2. Riley Satterfield 2024-11-26

I've been driving my Rav4 Base V6 4wd for almost two weeks now and I'm really enjoying it! On my first tank of gas, I got an average of 24 mpg driving a combination of highway and city. The ride quality feels really solid, although there is some engine noise in the first few gears. Once you pick up speed though, it's hardly noticeable. I ultimately chose the Rav4 over the CRV because of the v6 option, which Honda doesn't offer. With 270 Hp and 4wd, I'm confident it will handle hilly and snowy winters with ease.

  3. Prince Gaylord 2024-10-20

The V6 engine is fantastic! It's so quiet and makes driving so much fun. The controls are easy to use and the fold down seats are a great feature. Plus, it gets great gas mileage with 23/25 in town and 27/29 on the highway. However, I did find the ride to be a bit rough and not as smooth as I would have liked. Additionally, the headrests were not very comfortable.

  4. Coy Wehner 2024-09-25

Hi folks, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to give you an update since my last report. Recently, I took a 2350 mile trip through California, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada. I'm happy to report that the 4 cylinder engine performed exceptionally well, easily climbing up 8700 ft mountains with no issues. I also achieved an impressive 29.1 MPG while maintaining a speed of 75-80mph. Although I did downshift a couple of times, it was no problem at all. Additionally, I noticed that my brakes improved during the trip, which was a relief since they were a bit mushy before. Overall, I had a great time on the trip and the car performed wonderfully.

  5. Deontae West 2024-09-23

Your RAV4 sounds like a fantastic car! It rides smoothly and the controls are easily accessible. It's great to hear that you've had little to no problems with maintenance. Plus, it performs well in both LA gridlock and on the open road.
