2010 Nissan Cube problems
The Nissan Cube is a mini MPV produced by carmaker Nissan between 1998 and 2019. Initially sold only in Japan, the Cube was sold in North American markets from 2009 to 2014, and in European markets from 2009 to 2011. In Japan, it was exclusive to Nissan Red Stage dealerships. It is a slightly larger load-carrying alternative to the Nissan Micra hatchback. While production for the North American market ended in 2014, the Japanese-market Cube lasted until December 2019.
First generation (Z10; 1998)
The first-generation Cube was introduced in 1998. It shared the same platform as the Nissan Micra (known as the March in Japan and Southeast Asia), as well as the same 1.3 L inline-four engine. A continuously variable transmission and four-wheel drive were optional. The Cube covered the gap in the Nissan lineup between the March and the Sunny.
Second generation (Z11; 2002)
The second-generation Cube was released in 2002 with a larger interior than the previous model. The combination of angled and curved surfaces was based on the third-generation Micra/March, powered by a 1.4 L I4 engine. The model included the "e4WD" system as an option, which transfers power to the rear wheels when the front wheels spin via a small electric motor on the rear underside of the floor. The electrically powered system allows for reduced drivetrain drag in FWD mode. A slightly longer three row model, the Cube Cubic (stylized as Cube³) went on sale in September 2003.
When equipped with a CVT, the steering wheel button controls and the sport wheel button on the dash panel are located next to the hazard flasher switch. In mid-2005, the cube had an optional upgrade with the new HR-series 1.5 L engine from the Nissan Tiida.
All Cube models have optional extras including an Ion filter (Air Ioniser) for cleaning the air and Nissan's 'smart key' which allows the driver to enter the car without having to use a key. Other options include a sunroof, 12 different styles of front grille and satellite navigation. Other specific models also have different styles of bodykits and fender flares. They come with optional 14 or 15 inch wheels and the Autech versions (Rider, Cube3 and GT models) with chrome styling and special seat covering.
The second-generation Cube was imported and sold in Malaysia by Mitsuoka as the M-Box and later the MPV. This model was different from other Mitsuoka models in that it had no major differences to the original car, and simply had a different grille and a couple of other exterior parts. The M-Box and MPV were exclusive to Malaysia.

Common 2010 Nissan Cube problems
The Nissan Cube, particularly the 2010 model, is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The most significant issue appears to be related to the transmission, specifically the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which has been the subject of numerous complaints across different model years.
The CVT transmission failure in the 2010 Nissan Cube has been reported ten times, making it the most common problem for this model year. This issue can lead to a complete transmission failure, which can be costly to repair or replace. The CVT transmission is known for its unique design, which eliminates traditional gears and uses a belt and pulley system instead. While this design offers some benefits, such as improved fuel efficiency and smoother acceleration, it also has drawbacks. The CVT transmission in the Nissan Cube has been criticized for its lack of durability and reliability, with some owners reporting failures as early as 30,000 miles.
Another common problem with the 2010 Nissan Cube is the steering lock assembly malfunction, which has been reported nine times. This issue can cause the steering wheel to lock up, making it difficult or impossible to steer the vehicle. In some cases, this problem can occur while driving, which can be dangerous and potentially lead to accidents. The steering column lock malfunction, which has been reported seven times, can also cause the steering wheel to lock up, but this issue is typically related to the ignition system and can prevent the car from starting.
In addition to transmission and steering problems, the 2010 Nissan Cube has also been reported to have issues with the engine, electrical system, and HVAC system. Some owners have reported engine problems, such as ticking noises and poor performance, while others have reported electrical issues, such as malfunctioning lights and radios. The HVAC system has also been reported to have problems, with some owners complaining about poor heating and cooling performance.
The 2010 Nissan Cube's transmission problems have been a significant source of frustration for many owners. Some have reported that the dealerships were unhelpful or even accused them of abusing the vehicle to avoid making repairs. In some cases, owners have had to wait for extended periods to have their vehicles repaired, causing significant inconvenience and frustration. The transmission problems have also led some owners to file lemon lawsuits, seeking compensation for their troubles.
In conclusion, while the Nissan Cube has some unique features and design elements that may appeal to some buyers, it is important to be aware of the common problems that have been reported by owners. The CVT transmission failure, steering lock assembly malfunction, and steering column lock malfunction are the most significant issues, but there are also reports of engine, electrical, and HVAC problems. Prospective buyers should carefully consider these issues and weigh them against the vehicle's unique design and features before making a purchasing decision.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-05
- VIN: JN8AZ2KR9AT
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Problem is the anti theft module located on the steering column has malfunctioned for my wife’s 2010 Nissan Cube keyless ignition. Vehicle would not restart for my wife after sitting for 5 hours, luckily she was not way off somewhere. From what I’ve seen Nissan did a recall of a similar defective module on other models but did not include the Cube. Nissan doesn’t even have the parts readily available for repair. Vehicle has been sitting at a repair shop for over a month now. This should be a safety issue as it could leave people totally stranded in the middle of nowhere with no meaningful way to repair the vehicle. The part number of the module is 487001 FA0C. It is believed that Nissan did not recall the Cube because of the low quantity of vehicles manufactured in relation to the other problem models.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-08-01
- VIN: JN8AZ2KR2AT
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuel level readings have been erratic for over 40,000 miles now. Fuel gauge will randomly show the fuel level with less than 1/4 tank left, even though the car has gone less than 100 miles after filling (while the car can travel over 300 miles on a full tank.) Then a little while later, the fuel level will appear normal. And this cycle will repeat many times before the tank is actually below 1/4 tank full, based on both mileage and the "normal" fuel level.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-13
- VIN: JN8AZ2KR6AT
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: For a couple weeks on & off it’s been not wanting to go when I step on gas. I remember this doing same sort of thing before Allen web supposedly replaced my transmission as it was one of millions that are faulty as is one they put in 2018 only has 18,000 miles on tbis supposed replaced transmission & it’s in a mechanic shop as I write this a waiting on hopefully Nissan paying for this faulty transmission. I shouldn’t have to buy one when it’s only got 18,000 miles on it. I’ve almost been rear ended due to This ongoing problem. People behind me are ready to go when light turns green. I floor my gas pedal & it does nothing . Have to Hurry put my flashers on pray to God no one hits me & flag everyone to go around. I turn car off put I park first of course , wait few seconds & sometimes it thankfully goes into gear & i baby it rest of way as I don’t want to make it worse by flooring my gas pedal. I’m very careful & pray I make it rest my way to work or home whichever the case . I barely made it to work other day. My friend thankfully had my Nissan Cube towed to a shop as it turns out it in fact had all same codes as before they supposedly put newer one in P1778 p0868 P0725, p0746 & so on transmission CVT TRANSMISSION FAILURE! $2,935 plus other huge problem totaling $4,431 ! I definitely shouldn’t have to be dealing with any of this again!! I don’t drive far to work, had surgery as well so didn’t drive many places for a bit this is why only gone 18,000 miles in 4 years. I called auto mall Nissan & asked about my warranty they told me it’s expired! For only 18,000 miles put in it that’s ridiculous! Hwy robbery! Talk about a lemon again. Could of been smashed up by a truck being behind me a lot of things could of happened endangering myself as well as drivers behind me & behind those people. Plus dangerous being on side of road waiting to see if it’s gonna go into gear again or not! I understand things wear out but this transmission should be good thousands of miles!
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-30
- VIN: JN8AZ2KR7AT
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I was washing my car by hand and I was washing the driver's side rear view mirror and pivoted it away from the normal position so I could clean it better. When put it back to it's normal position, the hinge broke. When I looked closely at the hinge, I noticed that the hinge pretty much disintegrated, so it was just a matter of time before it broke. It could've broken off on the highway and been blown off, possibly damaging the vehicle or another vehicle, as the mirror was only hanging by the wires at that point. Also you can't drive a car without a driver's side mirror. I removed the mirror after I got done washing the car, so it wouldn't fall off and hit the car. I then ordered replacements for both the driver's side and passenger's side outside mirrors, including both the plain matte black covers, and the pre-primed covers, as I don't have to rush in getting the pre-primed covers painted to match the covers on the old mirrors. I attached the invoice for the replacements. The invoice doesn't include the cost of having the covers painted. I don't think the probably needs somebody else to confirm it, as the mirror is clearly separated from the bracket. The passenger's side mirror is showing the signs of starting to disintegrate, and both mirrors are available for inspection. Nobody else has inspected the mirrors. I tried to let the manufacturer know about it, but my email to them was bounced back as undeliverable. There were no symptoms of the problem prior to failure. The pictures of the mirror on the workbench are of the driver's side mirror, while the pictures of the mirror on the car are of the passenger's side mirror. I also included a picture of the odometer reading.

LEARNED CVT TRANSMISSION IS COVERED IN SERVICE CAMPAIGN BUT NISSAN STILL REFUSED TO CORRECT KNOWN ISSUE STATING IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE THAT NISSAN IS REFUSING TO AVOIDING NOTIFYING OWNERS OF THE RISK OF DRIVING A 2010 CUBE. MILEAGE IS JUST OVER 120,000 MILES. OTHER THAN THE ABRUPT TRANSMISSION FAILURE WHEN DRIVING, THE CAR IS IN GREAT CONDITION. NOT ONLY IS NISSAN SELLING CUBES THAT GO JUST OVER 120,000 THEN BREAK, THEY ARE HIDING IN THE FACT THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. NISSAN WANTS $4,500 TO FIX A SAFETY PROBLEM THEY 100% KNOW IS A BIG ISSUE.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-03-31
- VIN: JN8AZ2KR7AT
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: AS OF FEBRUARY 2017, WHAT I LATER FOUND OUT WAS THE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION, ALSO KNOWN AS, CVT TRANSMISSION, STARTED TO FAIL ON MY 2010 NISAN CUBE, WHICH HAS ONLY ONE OWNER. ON THE WAY TO WORK A LOUD WHINING NOISE CAME FROM UNDER THE HOOD. AS I WAS DRIVING ON A VERY BUSY STREET, THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE AND DECELERATE RANDOMLY WHILE IN DRIVE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD ALSO OCCASIONALLY ILLUMINATE. SEVERAL MECHANICS COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG, UNTIL I TOOK THE CUBE TO A MECHANIC THAT KNEW ABOUT THE MANY FAILURES THE NISSAN CVT TRANSMISSION WAS HAVING. I WAS TOLD THEN THAT NISSAN HAD CREATED A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM TO DEAL WITH THE CVT FAILURE; OF WHICH I WAS NEVER INFORMED BY NISSAN. EVEN THOUGH I CONTINUE TO RECEIVE EMAILS AND ADS FOR THE COMPANY. THE LETTER FROM NISSAN STATES THAT THE WARRANTY ON THE CVT WILL BE EXTENDED. "FIRST TO PROVIDE YOU WITH ADDITIONAL ASSURANCE REGARDING YOUR OVERALL COST OF OWNERSHIP WE HAVE DOUBLED THE WARRANTY PERIOD FOR THE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION IN YOUR NISSAN.: IT ALSO STATES "10 YEARS/120,000 MILES, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST." MY NISSAN CUBE IS CURRENTLY SEVEN YEARS OLD. I HAVE OVER 128,000 MILES. I NEVER RECEIVED A COPY OF THIS LETTER. I PURCHASED THIS CAR IN FEBRUARY 2010 AND THIS LETTER STATES THE END OF THIS REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM ENDED 7/31/2010! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR ME? MY CAR IS NOT 10 YEARS OLD! I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT A CAR FOR OVER TWO MONTHS NOW. I WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS OUT OF POCKET. ALSO IN THIS LETTER STATES "A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF OWNERS OF EARLY MODELS EQUIPPED WITH CVTS HAVE EXPRESSED CONCERNS ABOUT THE COST OF THE REPAIR OF TRANSMISSION AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES." DOES THIS COVER MY VEHICLE? THERE ARE COMPLAINTS ON NHTSA ABOUT THE CVT; THE ID #10919979 AND #10587829 AND THEIR WERE MORE LISTED HER WITH THE NHTSA. NISSAN CASE #26415319
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-01-28
- VIN: JN8Z2KR8AT1
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE ELECTRONIC STEERING INTERLOCK MECHANISM FAILED, ON AND OFF UNTIL IT FINALLY QUIT WORKING AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START AS A RESULT (THE CAR WAS STATIONARY EACH TIME THE PROBLEM OCCURRED, WHICH HAPPENED AT SEVERAL LOCATIONS AROUND LEXINGTON, KY). I HAD IT TOWED TO A DEALER, GLENN NISSAN, LEXINGTON, KY. INITIAL AND FOLLOW-UP REPAIRS COST $1,053.35. THIS WAS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD IN TERMS OF POTENTIALLY BEING STUCK WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION, AND A FAULTY MECHANISM AFFECTING THE STEERING PERFORMANCE OF THE CAR. TODAY I LEARNED THAT NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE DUE TO A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED BY THEIR CUSTOMERS WORLDWIDE. MY CAR IS PAST THE 3-YEAR EXTENSION PERIOD (BY THE WAY, I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY NOTICE OF THE WARRANTY EXTENSION). THE NATURE OF THIS VEHICULAR PROBLEM DEMANDED A RECALL OF THE VEHICLE, NOT AN EXTENSION OF THE WARRANTY. I AM THEREFORE REGISTERING THIS COMPLAINT WITH YOUR AGENCY AND ASKING FOR YOUR INVESTIGATION OF THIS CASE. IN ADDITION, THE LAW FIRM OF CHIMICLES & TIKELLIS, LLP, IS INVESTIGATING A POTENTIAL CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAINST NISSAN REGARDING THE DEFECTIVE, UNSAFE ELECTRONIC STEERING INTERLOCK INSTALLED ON THE 2009-2010 NISSAN CUBE MODEL AND TWO OTHER MODELS. I HAVE PROVIDED INFORMATION ON MY CASE TO JOIN THAT CLASS ACTION SUIT IF IT GOES FORWARD. I AND ALL CONSUMERS NEED THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY AND SAFETY ADMINISTRATION TO HOLD AUTO MANUFACTURERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR SELLING DEFECTIVE, UNSAFE CARS TO THE PUBLIC AND FOR FAILING TO PROPERLY ISSUE RECALLS ON SUCH VEHICLES. PLEASE ADVISE AS TO YOUR INTENTIONS FOR TAKING ACTION ON THIS MATTER. SINCERELY, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

- Summary: MY CAR STARTS WHEN IT FEELS LIKE IT. I'VE BEEN STRANDED AT THE STORE AFTER DROPPING OFF A CHILD AT SPORTS PRACTICE, STRANDED IN MY OWN GARAGE UNABLE TO TAKE MY CHILD TO SCHOOL OR GET TO WORK. STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-09-17
- VIN: JN8AZ2KR4AT
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I RECENTLY HAD MY STEERING LOCK MECHANISM GO OUT ON MY 2010 NISSAN CUBE AND LEAVE ME STRANDED. I HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED BECAUSE IT WOULD NO LONGER START THINKING IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. =$$ NO OTHER DEALERSHIPS WOULD LOOK AT IT BECAUSE IT WAS WHAT SEEMED AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE, I HAD TO TAKE IT TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM. I WAS QUOTED $950 FOR IT TO GET FIXED. UPON DOING RESEARCH I REALIZED THIS SAME PART WAS RECALLED ON THE 2009S. I ALSO FOUND MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE AND HOW NISSAN WAS NOT TAKING CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. I TOOK MY ISSUE TO NISSAN CORPORATE TO GET IT RESOLVED BUT THEY SAID AT THIS TIME THEY COULD NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT BECAUSE THERE WERE "REVISIONS" DONE TO THIS PART. OBVIOUSLY IT IS STILL A PROBLEM. IT ALSO WAS SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT HELP WITH ANY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH NISSAN AND WILL NEVER BUY FROM THEY AGAIN, FURTHER RECOMMEND THEIR BUSINESS OR CUSTOMER SERVICE. CLEARLY THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY. DO NOT BUY NISSAN ANYTHING. THEY WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR RECALLED PARTS AND DO THE RIGHT THING.

In October, I was given the cube to drive while my husband's car was being serviced. At first, I was skeptical and thought, 'You have got to be kidding!' However, after driving it for 36 hours, I fell in love with it! I even traded in my 3-year-old Civic for it and have not regretted it once. This car is amazing! It's fun, quirky, economical, and smart. It's an under-sung great little car that's surprisingly roomy. Additionally, it was a real champ in the snow this past winter. I'm thrilled with my gas mileage too. I average between no less than 31 mpg and up to 35 mpg, which seemed to increase after the 3,000 mile mark. In my 40 some years of driving, I have never loved a car as much as I love this one!

Your car has great gas mileage! It drinks less gas than your former 1994 Honda Civic LX. You only had to put gas in at 250 miles and still had 1/4 tank left. You also have a great view of the hood to map out lanes when driving. However, driving in the wind can be scary as it feels like the tires might give way and makes the car swerve badly. Unfortunately, there are no inside hooks to hang dry cleaning or other stuff and there are less compartments, including no compartments under the seats.

Congratulations on your new cube! It sounds like you're absolutely in love with it, and I can see why. The Cube has so many great features packed into such a small car, and it's wonderful to hear that you're finding it fun, easy, and comfortable to drive. I'm impressed that you, at 6 feet tall, can fit comfortably in both the front and back seats. And the storage space and extra lighting are definitely nice touches. It's great to hear that the Cube continues to surprise and delight you. Enjoy your new ride!

Switching from a Sequoia AWD to a Cube was an easy decision - the vertical design made it feel super roomy. With only 1600 miles on the odometer (I do 9 miles local and 9 miles on the freeway), I am averaging 31-33 mpg according to the trip computer. I love the Bluetooth feature - I only need to press one button and the rest is voice-recognized. Although it may be slightly underpowered, the pick-up is great from 0 to 45 mph. In fact, I have hardly seen any other cars pick up as fast as the Cube (just my experience on the road). Yes, there is a bit of noise after 45 mph and on the freeway there is some wind noise. However, the suspension is above average for an economy car - it handles uneven paved roads very well. I am very impressed and so far, this is the best compact car I have ever owned! You should definitely consider buying one!

The visors obstruct the driver's view and are not wide enough to block the sun through the side window, causing discomfort and potential danger. It is necessary to find visors that fit properly and provide adequate protection. This is a common issue that many drivers face and it is important to prioritize safety on the road. Thank you for bringing attention to this matter.

This car is great for local driving! However, I must say that my Nissan Cube struggles on the highway, especially in windy conditions. The wind noise can also be quite bothersome. But overall, it's a decent car for getting around town.

Hi there! Did you know that a four wheel alignment can cost over $1000 if the rear is out of spec? Unfortunately, the Nissan Cube has a non-adjustable rear axle and Nissan will not warrant replacement if it's out of spec. Shims are not approved either. Additionally, rotating tires may hide the factory problem and shorten tire life. Let me know if you have any questions!
