The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.

First generation (2010)

The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.

The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: 3GKALMEV0NL
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My check engine light came on and I got it hooked up to get the code of P0171 - Upon checking it was different things like O2 sensor the Mass Airflow sensor, fuel pump issue etc. I have been having issues with slight hesitation during acceleration, some jerking when slowing down (not hitting the brakes). Now the check engine light was on for one day the next day it was off. I did some research and found an article that stated that GM is issuing a safety recall for 2021 and 2022 GMC terrain due to a problem with the fuel pump module failing, not enough fuel to the engine and creating stalling risk. This was from January of 2023. It also said GM notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the upcoming recall on Jan 19th 2023 and was still pending as of Feb 2023. Also stated that GM has not yet conducted actual repairs to correct the issue. My truck, I bought it brand new on Jan 20th 2022, only 23,450 miles on it. The problem literally came out of no where a week ago. The hesitation, not being able to accelerate is very dangerous when I'm on the road, I could not get the check engine light checked out professionally because the next day it was off and I was informed that they could not do a proper diagnostic if there is no light on. Obviously there is an issue with the fuel system and I really want this checked out and possibly replaced. Not to mention my gas is also going very fast now.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 3GKALXEV7NL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel pump power control module failure. Part number 13554821. On [XXX], my trip home from South Carolina to Alabama was interrupted when I stopped to get something to eat. The car would not start and I had to call AAA to tow me to Superior GMC dealership in Anniston, Al. They knew what was wrong as soon as I told them it would not start. They already replaced three fuel pump control modules that day on the same model as mine. The service department said it was a persistent problem in GMC automobile's. I am [XXX] who had confidence enough in your automobile to take a trip by myself. I could have gotten stranded far away from home. I believe that this should be a recall because this is an ongoing issue with this model. I am sure that GMC is aware of this problem. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
  • VIN: 3GKALVEV2NL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving at approximately 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and would not accelerate. I was able to pull over onto the shoulder and turn the vehicle off. The engine would not turn over and the brake pedal locked into position, rendering the vehicle immobile. The check engine light also came on at this point. The vehicle was towed and ultimately repaired at the local GMC dealership, where the fuel pump was replaced. The 2022 GMC Terrain already has a recall in place due to the fuel pump module not providing sufficient fuel to the engine, resulting in an engine stall (23V013000), the effects of which sound very similar to what occurred. However, this vehicle’s VIN was not included in the recall. We are very lucky that this failure did not result in a crash, and that no further incident occurred while we were stranded on the side of the highway during the night, waiting for a tow.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-11
  • VIN: 3GKALVEV3NL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving my 2022 1.5L Turbo GMC Terrain at 65 mph with the air temperature at -2 degrees below zero Fahrenheit the check engine light came on with the error message "Engine Power is reduced." I coasted to the side of the road and put the car into park. I was 200 miles from home and after working with my insurance roadside assistance, I wasn't able to get a tow truck after 3 hours of waiting in sub zero temperatures. I called the local GM dealership in my home town to ask if I could drive the SUV and they said I could at less than 35mph. I drove 100 miles to a town where a tow truck was available. I brought the SUV to the GM dealership and they said the issue is ice and condensation in the inner cooler CAC system. They said my SUV wasn't updated for the cold weather package. I was told my engine needed a cold weather package in order to drive it in sub zero temperatures. After reviewing this issue online, I found there was a recall for 2018-2022 1.5L Turbo GMC Terrain vehicles that experience these issues but my VIN number wasn't included in the recall. I called GMC to report the issue with my SUV and after speaking with multiple people was told that it wouldn't be covered under the recall due to the "numerous factors" that determine what VIN numbers fall into a recall. My SUV has the same engine, is the correct year, and has the same engine problem as the GMC Terrains that were included in the recall. I now have to pay out of pocket for repairs and the engine fix of installing a cold weather package that is covered under the recall. I believe the recall needs to be expanded to additional VIN numbers.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-06
  • VIN: 3GKALPEV0NL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: April of 2022 I purchased this car brand new. January of 2023 this car started to have a musty/mold smell. I took it into the dealership in late February and inquired if this was a reported problem. I did as they dealership said and replaced the cabin filter. The cabin filter was black at 9,700 miles. It smelled horrible. On April 6, 2023, I took my car into the dealership to resolve this smell. It was discovered that the the cowl inside the firewall on the drivers side firewall had several holes and an incorrectly applied seam. It was also discovered that the drivers side sunroof drain was also disconnected. This was was full of mold. They replaced the entire interior of my car which took until June 28th. I expressed I did not want this car back for fear of mold, I had already been sick and had no idea why. Once I got into a dealer car, I quit coughing. The dealership cannot guarantee me that they got all of the mold in the car, it still has an odor in it. I have went through the claims process with GM and they have refused to buy back my car, based on my claim I am worried about my health. This car had $12,000 in repairs to it. I was promised verbally by the District Manager of After Market Sales that my car would be bought back. They backed out on the deal and told me they cannot buy it back for destruction. I have great concerns about my cars safety with the mold being so large. They cannot guarantee me the mold is completely gone as told me to by the Service Manager. Therefore, this would include the safety of others that travel in my car, to include children and older adults. This problem started in manufacturing and was acknowledged by the dealership as such. It was a defective car when it arrived on the lot.

SEAT BELTS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
  • VIN: 3GKALMEV0NL
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle started stalling back in February 2023, service engine light started coming on and then we started getting a message that the SD memory card had been removed and this message has stayed on constantly along with the service engine light. I made an appointment to get the recalls fixed with the dealership that we purchased it from which is 50 miles away but was told the parts for the fuel pump and child restraints were not available at that time. They looked at the memory sensor card but could not find anything wrong and was told if the error message came back up to call them back, I know more got home and the message came back up so I called them back and they set me up with another appointment the following week. This time because the message only comes up randomly and it did not come up while I was there I was told nothing could be done but to call back when the message comes back and as soon as I got home it came up so I called them back, they made another appointment for the following week and this time the message came on when the tech drove it so they took out the sensor card and cleaned it and everything around it and said everything looks fine now but it still comes on, but was told due to them not having the parts for the fuel pump that we should take it to our closest dealership. On 6/15/2023 we took it to our local dealership and I was told they would need to order parts and the eta on it was 4 days out, they said they would call me when the parts came in, I waited until 6/22/23 and no one ever called me back so I called to check and the parts were still not in but would check on it and call me back, no one ever called and I still have not heard from anyone. The last time we took it up there the vehicle stalled, we almost got hit from behind and it kept dying and would barely start, it is now setting under my carport, we are afraid to drive it and I still have not heard from anyone. This all started in February 2023 and it is June now.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-14
  • VIN: 3GKALTEV6NL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The infotainment center has a tendency to freeze upon starting the car. Subsequently, when the car is put in reverse the back up camera will remain on for several minutes after putting the car back into drive causing a distraction to the driver. The freezing of the infotainment screen will often stay frozen even after turning the car off. When the car is off and the door is closed and locked, the screen stays on and music stays blasting, unable to turn the music down or off even though the car is off and locked with no one inside. The screen has stayed on for over an hour and upon returning to the vehicle, the car took several tries to start. I can only assume that the freezing is beginning to cause the battery to drain. This is causing a safety concern as loud blaring music is distracting and the possibility of being stranded without being able to start my car is a scary thought. This problem has been occurring since I purchased the car and has not been able to be reproduced by the dealer as it only happens randomly a few times a month.

Negative 2022 Gmc Terrain car reviews

  1. Mariano Williamson 2024-11-14

Although the car had high hopes, the pushbutton gear shift was difficult to adjust to and the interior felt cheap, despite the upgrades. However, it is important to note that these issues do not detract from the overall quality of the vehicle.

  2. Norval Halvorson 2024-08-23

The drive train feels underpowered when trying to maintain speeds between 35 to 45 mph while following traffic on NH roads. The transmission tends to grind, giving the impression of being in a high gear while going too slow. However, I found that selecting the best gear in L mode helps to reduce the grinding significantly. When driving at higher speeds on the highway, the car runs fine. Although I was disappointed with the grinding issue, everything else works well and it is a nice car. I paid a high price for this car and got an extra warranty, but unfortunately, I am not satisfied with its performance. Despite this, I appreciate the car's features and will consider other options before trading it in.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Terrain that I purchased 16 months ago. Recently, the Fuel Pump Module went out and unfortunately, I discovered that the vehicle cannot be put in Neutral during a breakdown. Although we were in a big enough parking lot for other vehicles to get around us, I couldn't help but think about the potential hazard this could cause. It's concerning that there's no way to get the vehicle off the road in a breakdown situation. When I spoke to the dealer about this issue, they acknowledged that it's a bad design. I believe this is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed. By the way, I also confirmed that there is no override for this. Thank you for taking the time to read my experience.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the car. While it handles perfectly on smooth roads, I found that it struggles a bit on rougher terrain. Personally, I prefer the comfort of my Civic Si. Overall, I would give it an F. Take care!

  5. Carmel Ullrich 2024-02-04

I purchased my SLT Terrain brand new in 2021 and initially had high hopes for it. However, within the first 3 months of ownership, I experienced two major issues with the fuel pump and drive shaft, which required repairs. While I am grateful that these repairs were covered under warranty, I am disappointed that a brand new car with only 20,000 miles would require such significant repairs. As a consumer, I expected a higher level of reliability and am left feeling let down by my purchase.

Positive 2022 Gmc Terrain car reviews

  1. Jackson Terry 2024-11-29

I really like the car because it has great gas mileage, looks sharp, and drives nicely. However, I have noticed that when driving through a couple of inches of snow, the snow sticks to the inside of the wheels and causes a horrible shake. The design of the wheels could be improved. Additionally, the tires that come with the vehicle are not the best. It's unfortunate that you have to purchase snow tires on a leased vehicle. Vehicles sold in the Midwest should come with better all-season tires, otherwise, driving in the winter can be very scary and you may slide all over the road.

Hey there! Don't forget to do your homework!

  5. Damion Stanton 2024-09-27

I really appreciate the Terrain, especially the memory seat. However, I have to say that the rear view camera is not my favorite. In fact, it's the worst one I've had in my last 4 SUVs, and I get a new one every year. I've also tried the Buick Encore GS, Jeep, and Chevy Equinox.
