2003 Suzuki Grand vitara xl-7 problems
The Suzuki XL-7 (styled as XL7 for the second generation) is a mid-size SUV sold by Suzuki from 1998 to 2009, over two generations. Slotted above the Grand Vitara in Suzuki's lineup, the XL-7 offered three-row seating. XL-7 stands for "Xtra Large 7-seater".
First generation (XL-7; 1998)
The first-generation XL-7 was a Suzuki design, had a body-on-frame construction, and was essentially a stretched Grand Vitara. The North American version had a Suzuki-designed 2.5- or 2.7-liter V6 engine, on a rear-wheel drive-based platform with optional four-wheel drive. Beginning in 2003, European versions were also available with a 2.0-liter Peugeot turbodiesel engine producing 109 PS (80 kW).
A unique trait in the US market in this segment was that the XL-7 was available with a five-speed manual transmission, in both five- and seven-seat variants.
When introduced, the XL-7 was the least expensive SUV available with three-row seating in North America. It was awarded the Consumers Digest "Best Buy" award. However, sales slowed as the vehicle aged relative to the competition.
In Thailand, the Grand Vitara XL-7 was Imported by Siam International Corporation Co. Ltd. on 2002.
In Indonesia, the Grand Escudo XL-7 was launched on July 19, 2003, at the 12th Gaikindo Auto Expo.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-10-22
- Crash: 1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE BRAKE AND GAS PEDAL ARE AT THE PROPER ELEVATION TO PRESS THEM SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH ONE FOOT. BECAUSE IT IS REAR WHEEL DRIVE AND ANTI-LOCK BRAKES, THE CAR SPEEDS UP WHEN THAT HAPPENS. THIS IS A TYPICAL ENGINEERING FLAW THAT HAPPENS WITH MANY VEHICLES ("HE THOUGHT HE WAS STEPPING ON THE BRAKE WHEN HE RAN INTO THE CROWD OF PEOPLE..."). THE FRONT ANTI-LOCK BRAKES RELEASE WHEN THE REAR WHEELS WANT TO KEEP TURNING. WITH REGULAR BRAKES, ONE CAN STILL OVERCOME THE FORCE OF THE ENGINE AND STOP A CAR. I RAN INTO A HOUSE TRAILER BECAUSE OF THE CAR ACCELERATED WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE! THE PROBLEM CAN BE ENGINEERED OUT. I HAVE NOT YET FOUND A WAY TO DISSEMINATE THIS INFORMATION TO ANY NATIONAL SAFETY COMMITTEE. IT IS PROBABLY A COMMON PROBLEM FOR PEOPLE WHO USE ONE FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE OTHER FOOT ON THE GAS.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-12-15
- VIN: JS3TX92V334
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Fire: 1
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: AS I WAS DRIVING THE CAR, IT CAME TO A STOP ON ITS OWN .. I GOT OUT TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG, AND I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS FIRE COMING OUT OF THE BACK AND THE FRONT OF THE CAR. AS I RAN AWAY FROM THE CAR I COULD SEE THE FIRE DRIPPING FROM THE BOTTOM . *TR
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-05-14
- VIN: JS3TX92V534
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC TO A SCHEDULED DOCTORS APPOINTMENT FROM TOLEDO, OHIO TO ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, THE POWER STEERING WHEEL BECAME STIFF AND DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AND OPERATE THE VEHICLE PROPERLY AND SAFELY. WHEN CHANGING LANES TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY AFTER DRIVING 56 MILES THE POWER STEERING WHEEL WAS HARD TO TURN WHILE EXITING OFF THE OFFRAMP. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO A NEARBY SERVICE CENTER CALLED GOODYEAR. GOODYEAR ANALYZED THE VEHICLE AND SAID THE DRIVE BELT HAD BROKEN OFF THE AIR COMPRESSOR WHICH CONTROLS THE POWER STEERING BELT. GOODYEAR HAD TO PUT A NEW DRIVE BELT ON, WHICH COST ME $115.89. ADDITIONALLY, GOODYEAR SAID THE A/C COMPRESSOR HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND THAT CAUSED THE A/C COMPRESSOR TO FREEZE UP WHICH CAUSED THE SERIOUS PROBLEM OF THE POWER STEERING BELT TO BREAK OFF. (SHREDDED) GOODYEAR'S ESTIMATE TO REPAIR THE COMPRESSOR MALFUNCTION WAS $1,500.00 DOLLARS. THE ESTIMATE COST OF THE A/C COMPRESSOR PART BY ITSELF FOR THE SUZUKI XL7 03 WAS $600 DOLLARS. ALSO, WHEN I RESEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR OTHER SIMILAR SUZUKI A/C MALFUNCTION COMPLAINTS I FOUND NUMEROUS SUZUKI XL7 OWNERS WHO HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, IE., THE A/C COMPRESSOR HAS A SERIOUS HABIT OF FREEZING UP AND BREAKING THE DRIVE BELT! I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD FOR OWNERS OF SUZUKI XL7 03 MODELS AND YOUR AGENCY NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE THIS SAFETY DEFECT BEFORE THE SUZUKI XL7 CAUSES A SERIOUS VEHICLE ACCIDENT WHICH COULD RESULT IN DEATH! ADDITIONALLY,ANYTHING THAT WOULD IMPAIR THE OPERATION OF A MAJOR PART OF ANY VEHICLE IS A "SAFETY DEFECT" AND HAZARDOUS!" SUZUKI MANUFACTURERS OUGHT TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS SAFETY PROBLEM AS THEY MANUFACTURED THE SUZUKI XL7 03 AND SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THE A/C COMPRESSOR COULD MALFUNCTION WHICH IS THE CAUSE FOR THE DRIVE BELT TO BREAK OFF THE POWER STEERING. *JS
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-06-16
- VIN: JS3TX92V534
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAD BOUGHT A USED SUZUKI AUTO FROM ENTERPRISE RENTAL CARS. IN MID-JUNE 2005 I WAS RETURNING TO PHILA. ON I-95 AFTER TAKING MY DAUGHTER TO CAMP IN MASSACHUSETTS. JUST OUTSIDE DARIEN, CONN. ALL THE POWER ON THE CAR JUST SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. AN 18-WHEELER WAS BARRELING DOWN ON ME IN THE CENTER LANE BUT FORTUNATELY FOR ME THE LANE TO MY RIGHT WAS EMPTY AND THE SHOULDER WAS WIDE ENOUGH FOR ME TO PULL OVER. AFTER SPENDING THE NIGHT IN DARIEN AND HAVING A REPAIR SHOP TOW THE CAR, THE MECHANIC SAID THERE HAD BEEN A BLOWN FUSE. HE REPLACED THE FUSE AND GAVE ME A SPARE AND INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO REPLACE IT IF I NEEDED TO ON MY WAY HOME. AFTER I GOT BACK TO PHILA., I TOOK THE CAR TO MY NEAREST SUZUKI DEALER. THE MECHANIC FOUND THE PROBLEM WHICH HE SAID WAS THE SUBJECT OF A RECALL THE PREVIOUS YEAR AND THAT ENTERPRISE HAD NEVER TAKEN THE VEHICLE IN TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM, BY THE WAY, WAS THAT A WIRES RUBBER COATING HAD BEEN ABRADED DUE TO RUBBING AGAINST THE CHASSIS OF THE CAR. ONCE THE WIRE WAS EXPOSED, ITS TOUCHING THE METAL FRAME CAUSED THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (INCLUDING THE ACCELERATOR) TO SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. I DON'T FAULT SUZUKI BUT RATHER ENTERPRISE CAR RENTALS FOR NOT ALLOWING THE CAR TO BE SERVICED BY SUZUKI WHEN THEY WERE GIVEN THE RECALL NOTICE AND THEN SELLING IT TO ME WITHOUT TELLING ME ANYTHING ABOUT THE RECALL OR WHAT THEY DID ABOUT THE RECALL.. - Summary: MY 2003 SUZUKI XL-7 STARTED MAKING NOISES AND SUDDENLY THE ENGINE DIED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A MAJOR ROAD AT AN INTERSECTION DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC. MY CAR WOULD NOT CRANK BACK UP AND I HAD TO HAVE A POLICE OFFICER HELP ME PUSH MY CAR THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND CALL A TOW TRUCK. THE TOW TRUCK TOOK MY CAR TO THE LOCAL SUZUKI DEALERSHIP AND SERVICE DEPT. THE HEAD MECHANIC INFORMED ME AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE THAT MY INTERNAL FUEL PUMP BURNT ALL MY WIRING HARNESSES UP IN THE ENTIRE CAR. I WAS LOW ON FUEL THAT DAY AND IT WAS A MIRACLE THAT THE FUEL TANK DID NOT BLOW UP AND OR THE VEHICLE DIDN'T CATCH FIRE. THE MECHANIC HAS RECORDED WHAT HE FOUND AND WE HAVE ALL THE BURNT AND DEFECTIVE ORIGINAL PARTS. I HAVE PAID A LOT AND AM STILL WAITING FOR OVER TWO MONTHS WITHOUT A CAR FOR THE PARTS TO GET IT FIXED. A RECALL NEEDS TO BE MADE AND AN INVESTIGATION ON THE FUEL PUMP THAT WAS INSTALLED IN MY CAR BY THE MANUFACTURER SUZUKI. *TR

- Manufacturer: AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORP.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, UNDER AMBIENT TEMPERATURES BELOW -25 DEGREES CELSIUS, MOISTURE CAN FREEZE IN THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. AS A RESULT, FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE MAY INCREASE AT THE TIME OF ENGINE START UP, CAUSING FUEL LOSS AT THE FUEL PIPE/FUEL HOSE CONNECTION.
- Consequence: FUEL LOSS IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, THE FUEL DELIVER HOSE AND REPLACE THE HOSE CLAMP WITH AN IMPROVED CLAMP. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT SUZUKI AT 1-800-934-0934.
- Manufacturer: AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORP.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE IGNITION SYSTEM WIRING HARNESS IS ROUTED UNDER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE HARNESS CAN RUB AGAINST THE MANIFOLD DURING VEHICLE OPERATION AND ABRASION DAMAGE TO THE HARNESS CAN OCCUR.
- Consequence: DAMAGE TO THE WIRING HARNESS CAN CAUSE A SHORT IN THE IGNITION CIRCUIT, WHICH CAN CAUSE THE IGNITION FUSE TO BLOW AND THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING. THIS CAN RESULT IN A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPAIR ANY WIRING HARNESS DAMAGE AND WILL ADD ADDITIONAL INSULATION AND A PROTECTOR PLATE TO PREVENT THE WIRING HARNESS FROM BECOMING DAMAGED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON DECEMBER 16, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT SUZUKI AT 1-800-934-0934.
