The Audi A8 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi since 1994. Succeeding the Audi V8, and now in its fourth generation, the A8 has been offered with both front- or permanent all-wheel drive—and in short- and long-wheelbase variants. The S8 was only offered with a short-wheelbase for the first three generations, being joined by a long-wheelbase variant for the fourth generation.
D2 (Typ 4D; 1994–2002)
Development
In 1982, Ferdinand Piëch signed an agreement with Aluminum Company of America. The objective was to design and develop a car that would be substantially lighter than any other vehicles in its class (to compensate for the fact that standard all-wheel drive was around 100 kg (220 lb) heavier than competitors' rear-wheel drive). In the late 1980s, it was decided that the target vehicle would be a successor to the V8 (Typ 4C) flagship introduced in 1988. By 1990, a final design by Chris Bird and Dirk van Braeckel was chosen and frozen for series production in mid-1991. In September 1993, the Audi Space Frame (ASF) Concept was unveiled at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) as a D2 Typ 4D prototype in polished aluminum. Pilot production began in December 1993 and development ended in early 1994, at a total cost of $700 million (£418.1 million).

POOR REAR VISION RESULTS FROM EXCESSIVELY WIDE C PILLARS, REAR SEAT HEAD RESTS THAT DO NOT HAVE STORAGE RECESSES OR OTHER PROVISIONS FOR PREVENTING THEM FROM OBSCURING LARGE AREAS OF THE REAR WINDOW. THE DEALER HAS AND AUDI HAVE BEEN LESS THAN HELPFUL EVEN WHEN I POINTED OUT THAT A 19991/2 A4 ($30,000) RIGHT OUSIDE MIRROR HAS ALMOST TWICE THE VISUAL FIELD AS MY A8. AUDI'S RESPONSE TO ME HAS BEEN TERRIBLE, AND THEIR SUGGESTED ACTIONS INCLUDE MY HAVING TO PURCHASE AND HAVE INSTALLED APPROXIMATELY $1000 FOR RIGHT AND LEFT OUTSIDE MIRROR. THE LATEST A4'S REAR HEAD RESTS RECESS INTO THE TOP OF THE REAR SEATS AND PROVIDE ALMOST NO OBSCURATION OR REAR VISION. I REQUESTED ASSISTANCE FROM AUDI AT PURCHASE TIME RE: REAR HEAD REST POINTING OUT MY GREAT DANE WAS THE ONLY REAR SEAT PASSENGER, AND MY WILLINGNESS TO SIGN A RELEASE IF THE HEAD RESTS WERE REMOVED AND ABLE TO BE REINSTALLED EASILY. AUDI HAS TOTALLY IGNORED MY REQUEST FOR SAFETY CRITICAL REPLACEMENTS FOR MIRRORS, AND AUDI HAS APPARENTLY TERRORIZED THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE CRISWELL AUDI IS NOW REFUSING TO EVEN CONSIDER ANY AFTERMARKET PART INSTALLATION ON MY AUDI A8 INCUDING A BACK UP RADAR TRANSCIEVER THAT ONLY NEEDS A TWO WIRE HOOK UP AND SENSES OBJECTS WITHIN 12' OF THE REAR BUMPER WHEN BACKING UP. FINALLY EACH AREA OF CONCERN ABOUT THAT I HAVE ABOUT MY CAR, LIMITS MY CAR'S UTILITY ESP REAR VISION CONCERNS, AND ARE SEVERE ENOUGH SAFETY CONCERNS I HAVE FEWER THAN 6000 MILES IN 18 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP. THE 99.5 ADN YEAR 2000 AUDI'S HAVE ADDRESS EACH OF MY AREAS OF CONCERN IN THEIR NEW VEHICLES MIRROR SIZE, FIELD OF VIEW, AND REAR HEAD RESTS, HOWEVER, I AM STILL BEING STONE WALLED RE: SAFETY ISSUES THAT HAVE PLAGUED THIS CAR SINCE I PURCHASED IT. *

- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 1998 Audi A8 and 1997-1998 Audi A4 vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to explode or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: The inflator could explode during air bag deployment, resulting in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternative inflator of a different design, free of charge. Owner notification letters were sent September 21, 2021. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 69BT. The vehicles in this recall were mistakenly omitted from recall 20V-056. All vehicle owners have already been notified by mail and informed that the remedy is available.

WITH THE LOCKING CABLE OUT OF POSITION, THE SHIFTER CAN BE MOVED OUT OF THE "PARK" POSITION EVEN IF THE IGNITION KEY IS NOT IN THE IGNITION LOCK.
- Consequence: THIS COULD ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO ROLL, CAUSING A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION LOCKING CABLE BY INSTALLING AN ADJUSTING PIECE THAT WILL SECURE THE LOCKING CABLE IN PLACE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-822-2834.

- Consequence: IF MOISTURE AND/OR DUST PARTICLES ENTER THE SWIVEL BEARING MECHANISM, THE SWIVEL BEARING COULD WEAR OVER TIME DIMINISHING THE STEERING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.

I bought a Quattro A8 that had just come off a lease and I must say, it's been a great car. Even after two years and 96K miles, I've only experienced a few minor electrical glitches (outside mirror motor). The quality and performance of this car is truly superb.

I've been driving this car since 2002 and it's been an amazing experience. It's so much fun to drive, especially considering its size. The engine is incredibly powerful, and I'm glad it's legal in the United States. Despite its size, the space frame makes it feel light and nimble, yet solid as a rock. Living in the mountains of Utah, the Quattro is a must-have. I can see myself buying A8's for many years to come.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it used back in 2002 and have driven it for 80,000 miles since then. I have to say, the build quality, handling, and performance are all great! However, I have had some small issues with it over the years. At 170K miles, it's now on its third transmission, which is a bit of a bummer. But, on the bright side, I haven't had any other mechanical issues. The engine is fantastic and still tight and strong, using no oil. I've also had the chance to drive the 4.2 AWD models, but I have to say, I prefer the handling of my FWD 3.7 model. It's only 3600 lbs, which is about the same as a Subaru WRX. Interestingly, the 3.7 seems to have virtually disappeared from the roads now, though. At current rock-bottom prices, these are a stupendous bargain! Thanks for reading.

This must be the best car I've ever owned. I've owned Mbs and tons of other great cars, but nothing compares to this. Its awesome power is amazing, and it accelerates from 80-110 quicker than 0-60 (which is a big deal). The brakes are strong and it's lightweight...

I really enjoy cruising at high speeds of 85-90. The ride is quiet, refined, and solid, with more than enough power available for highway speeds. You can drive for extended miles on the highway and arrive feeling relaxed. The large fuel tank will allow you to go over 600 miles before refilling, but your bladder probably won't last that long without a stop. If you're looking to get the most for your money, a used A8 is a much better value than a new A4 for the same price.
