2022 Tesla Model x problems

The Tesla Model X is a battery electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV built by Tesla, Inc. since 2015. Developed from the full-sized sedan platform of the Tesla Model S, the vehicle notably uses falcon wing doors for passenger access.
The Model X has an EPA size class as an SUV, and shares around 30 percent of its content with the Model S, half of the originally planned 60 percent, and weighs about 10 percent more. Both the Model X and Model S are produced at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California. The prototype was unveiled at Tesla's design studios in Hawthorne, California on February 9, 2012. First deliveries of the Model X began in September 2015. After one full year on the market, in 2016, the Model X ranked seventh among the world's best-selling plug-in cars. A refresh of the Tesla Model X was introduced in 2021, offering a new "Plaid" performance model, along with a revised interior, powertrain, and suspension.
As of September 2023, the Model X is available as a Long-Range version with an estimated EPA range of 348 miles (560 km) and a high performance "Plaid" version with an estimated EPA range of 333 miles (536 km).

Common 2022 Tesla Model x problems
The Tesla Model X, despite being a popular and innovative electric luxury SUV, is not without its share of common problems. Here are some of the issues that Tesla Model X 2022 owners have reported, based on the search results:
- Control Arm Issues: Control arms are crucial for a vehicle's suspension system, affecting ride quality and handling. Some Model X owners have reported concerns with control arm wear and tear, which can lead to issues with the suspension system. Regular maintenance and inspections can help catch these problems early. If your Tesla is making strange noises or is difficult to drive, have a professional inspect the control arms.
- In-Car App Issues: Tesla's in-car applications offer convenience and entertainment, but some users have reported issues, such as crashes and improper loading. If the app problems persist after updating the firmware, try performing a soft reset by holding down the left and right scroll wheels of the steering wheel simultaneously for around 10 seconds. If the issues persist, contact Tesla's help desk for further assistance.
- Problematic Safety Features: Tesla's safety features, such as Autopilot and Full Self-Driving, are designed to enhance driving safety. However, some Model X drivers have reported issues with these features, such as the autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping functions not working as intended. To address these issues, always use the most recent software for your car. If troubles remain after following these steps, please contact Tesla support, who may be able to remotely diagnose and fix the problem, or recommend a service visit.
- Suspension and Steering Part Failures: Tens of thousands of Tesla owners have experienced premature failures of suspension or steering parts, according to a Reuters review. These failures have been attributed to design issues and not abusive behavior from customers. Tesla has sought to shift some of the resulting repair costs to customers, even for out-of-warranty cars. If you experience issues with your Model X's suspension or steering, contact Tesla support for assistance.
- Recall for Autopilot Safety Concerns: Tesla has issued a massive recall of more than 2 million vehicles, including the 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2023 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y equipped with Autosteer, a feature that maintains a set speed or following distance, detects lane markings, and the presence of other vehicles. The recall was issued due to concerns that the prominence and scope of the feature's controls may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse. If you own a recalled Tesla, follow the instructions provided by Tesla to have the issue addressed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: 7SAXCDE54NF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I am writing to express a safety concern regarding the Tesla Model X. I have found that the location of the horn is difficult to identify and activate, especially during emergency situations where quick reflexes are critical. In high-stress scenarios, the horn is a vital tool for alerting other drivers and avoiding potential accidents. However, the current design of the Tesla Model X makes it challenging to quickly locate and press the horn button. This could lead to delayed response times, increasing the risk of collisions or other hazardous situations. Given the importance of this issue, I strongly urge Tesla to redesign the horn button to make it more intuitive and easier to access under duress. Additionally, I recommend that any modifications or improvements related to this concern be made available to all Tesla Model X owners free of charge. Ensuring that this safety enhancement is accessible to everyone will help protect Tesla drivers, passengers, and other road users.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
- VIN: 7SAXCDE52NF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I was getting a message on my display saying: Steering assist reduced Steering may require increased effort. But in reality, it requires all my strength, to turn the wheel. Very dangerous. Tesla charge to fix $4,100. I’ll have to pay it.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-31
- VIN: 7SAXCBE69NF

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
- VIN: 7SAXCBE62NF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: As I was making an unprotected left turn, the power steering failed. The steering became incredibly heavy. There was almost an accident. Feels unsafe to drive, will be towing to the dealership. Errors: Steering assist reduced, lane assist unavailable. Codes: EPAS3P_a005_sent2mia, torque sensor 2 signal not received.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-14
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 7SAXCDE55NF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was stopped at an intersection in the left turn lane heading southeast at a busy intersection. Left turn signal was on and within 3 minutes of getting to the intersection the vehicle experiences an uncommanded full power acceleration into a very busy intersection. To avoid oncoming traffic, I veered to the right while breaking which did not stop the vehicle. Avoiding a traffic pole and continuing into a business empty parking lot which usually is not empty due to loitering in the area, and avoiding the building the vehicle continued accelerating at a high rate of speed and was stopped only because it hit a metal pole which was hidden by a large bush on the side of the business. If the pole would have not stopped the vehicle it would have continued into oncoming traffic in the north bound lane. Air bags were deployed. The only visible injury I received was burns from the airbag on my right arm and sever busing on my abdomen which has taken 4 months to resolve. The police were on the scene immediately, my insurance company representatives have seen the videos produce by myself and Tesla sent to me via email. The insurance had put a hold on the vehicle which was towed to Carparts. Tesla has never contacted me or my insurance company that I know of besides my request by email for the additional data. I have driven a Tesla model S for 7 yrs prior to purchasing the Model X. The Model X had an incident once that it stopped on its own while I was driving on an interstate. I veered to the right to get off the highway and thankful no one was behind me. There wasn't any indication that anything was wrong and may have been something corrected by an automatic update which dealt with exiting right off a highway which I was not doing but this incident never happened again.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 7SAXCDE54NF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The location of horn small icon and not in middle of the steering wheel is very hard to locate when you need it and safety concerns. Several times I needed to use the horn in emergency but were not able to locate it when you are in sudden need. Thanks
STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-08
- VIN: 7SAXCBE6XNF
- Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Many newer models of Teslas do not include a horn in the middle of the steering wheel. Instead there is a small button on the left side which is impossible to find to warn others of a possible collision! The driver gets distracted trying to find the horn and makes the situation even worse by not reacting quick enough. They released a new version of the wheel with a horn but those who are out of warranty have to pay a large amount for a basic yet hugs safety oversight. They should be replaced on with recall free of charge.
SEAT BELTS,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-06
- VIN: 7SAXCBE65N
- Components: SEAT BELTS,AIR BAGS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model X. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the driver’s side rear passenger’s seat belt failed to release the child occupying the seat. The contact stated that after five minutes the seat belt was released. The contact then stated that while driving at approximately 20 MPH, with the front passenger and the driver’s side rear seats occupied, the restraint system fault for each passenger was displayed. Additionally, the contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the messages appeared intermittently while both seats were unoccupied. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that a seat belt module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000.
LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
- VIN: 7SAXCBE50NF
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: The passenger side back door does not open consistently leading to loss of egress. Although the other doors do function regularly, removing a child from a car seat is nearly impossible when accessing from another door. The door also struggles to close consistently, and has closed on my son in the past. The inconsistency of a functioning falcon wing door is a safety risk and it continues to worsen despite many attempts to repair the sensors. The Tesla service center has attempted to repair the door and sensors 4 times without success. The most recent service appointment they stated the door was not opening correctly because it was getting stuck in “indoor mode” sensing something over the top of the car. They replaced the sensor but the problem has not improved. I have notified Tesla of the ongoing issue multiple times without any response, even via certified mail with proof of delivery. There are no warning lamps, beeps or any notifications showing an error in door function.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
- VIN: 7SAXCBE6XNF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: This vehicle has massive and unbearable static electrical shock when the car stopped and trying to close the door as metal body of the car. and I have several Videos showing the electric shocks The auto pilot stop the vehicle on the highway for no reason that’s put the passenger in serious rear collision
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-02
- VIN: 7SAXCBE60NF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The yoke steering wheel only had a small horn button on the right side, only accessible by right thumb. If you are in the middle of a turn that requires more than a quarter turn, then your hand cannot possible be in the right place to use the horn. The lack of a horn in the center of the steering (like every other car) is unsafe. On many occasions I have found myself needing the horn but unable to press it fast enough and have had to take other evasive actions to avoid other vehicles.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-23
- VIN: 7SAXCBE50NF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: On more than one occasion lost power steering and ability to steer properly suddenly in mid drive. It is associated with a warning that comes on at random times saying steering assist reduced
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
- VIN: 7SAXCBE69NF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Center steering wheel horn is not included on these vehicles, which should be considered a significant safety issue as we are trained from a young age to hit the center of the steering wheel/yoke in the event of an imminent accident. I was recently driving when another vehicle ran a stop sign, and I was barely able to avoid them; however, when hitting the "horn" to alert the other driver, it didn't work as the horn button is not in a typical location. This should be considered a significant safety risk. Elon Musk himself indicated a software update would fix this issue; however, it has not. Tesla now indicates it requires a new wheel/yoke and has not yet made it available or covered under warranty.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-06
- VIN: 7SAXCBE59NF
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: A couple of days ago, when I was dropping off my child at school, I parked in a spot that required parallel parking to save time as I was in a rush. After reversing into the spot, I just needed to move forward a bit by 1-2 feet. I naturally slide the gear shift up on the screen. Unfortunately, it didn't slide into place, and the car was still in reverse (R), but I didn't realize it. I was already very close to the car behind me. When I pressed the accelerator, the car continued to back up. Luckily, I slammed the brake, avoiding a collision. Just wanted to share that even after a year and a half of driving a Model X, mistakes can still happen. After reading what happened to [XXX] , I posted what happened to me on a social platform and someone else shared they had a similar experience that needed up with a crash. So I decided to report mine and encouraged them to do the same. I like the minimalist design but I need to stay alive to enjoy it. As Tesla is moving away from stalkless design in more models, I hope they can do something to make the current shift more noticeable. VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-05
- VIN: 7SAXCBE65NF
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The new stockless button controls on the Tesla are entirely unsafe. The buttons themselves are extremely unreliable and don't always respond, and the placement on the steering wheel requires you to take your eyes off the road in order to locate the correct button. I was recently driving on the freeway with my wife and kids in the car, it had been raining earlier and the roads were wet. A car in the opposite fast lane hit a puddle which sent wave of water over the center divider. It covered our windshield to the point where I couldn't see. With previous cars, including previous Teslas, it was easy to quickly tap the stalk and engage the wipers, but now with this new button system I had to look down at the steering wheel to find the button to quickly engage the wipers. From the surprisingly blinding wave and the time it took to clear the windshield, I veered into the next lane and almost hit the car next to me. It was an eye-opening experience with a car I've really enjoyed owning. The buttons are terrible, and a deviation from a universal, internationally accepted system that was not broke, did not require fixing, and has created a safety hazard.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-05
- VIN: 7SAXCDE52NF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The horn is a small button on the steering wheel instead of the larger pad in the center of the steering wheel. When making turns or complex maneuvers the horn is not easily found since the steering device is turning. This is a safety issue that needs to be addressed.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-29
- VIN: 7SAXCBE60NF
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The car was parked on street and when I go inside the car and try to start car first on my tesla screen show alert 7 error after that couple minutes the front passenger airbag is deployed for nor reason I want to let you know the car it’s not involved any accidents or any impact
SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-15
- VIN: 7SAXCBE61NF
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I continue to experience accelerated severe rear tire wear since my original purchase of this car new in February 2022 on both rear tires (275/45R20). The car has had the alignment specifications confirmed by Tesla. Yet I have had to replace two sets of rear tires in less than 36,000 miles due to the inside edge of both tires being worn through the rubber and into the steel cords of the tires. This last set of tires went ~14,000 miles and still had 5/32" tread depth remaining across all treads. This substantial wear is not readily observed by the vehicle operator without crawling under the car. The wear on these tires is indicative of excessive negative camber settings of the suspension. However, TESLA states the rear suspension alignment is within camber specifications at -2.13 to -2.06 degrees. The tires appear road worthy during a casual walk around of the vehicle. I have been fortunate these tires have not experienced a blow out, which at highway speed could have resulted in loss of control of the vehicle. I have retained both removed rear tires. Repair orders, alignment details and picture of excessively worn tire are attached.
LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-17
- VIN: 7SAXCDE52NF
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: Tesla Model X all doors are 100% automatic which means that they cannot be manually opened from the outside if the car software is not working. I have been facing a lot of issues with the Falcon doors and to my surprise a lot of other Tesla X users on Reddit face the same issue. So, when you press the open button on your app to open the rear falcon doors it might not open at all and just make a beep sound. It's hard to replicate this issue but I shot a video showing how it happens. This is not the first time that it had happened with my car. I have had this happen multiple times to my car. Every time the service center would simply change the door sensor which would fix the issue but temporarily. I think it a big safety issue as I have 2 toddlers who occupy the rear row in their car seats. I cannot get them out of the car when such issue arises. I have done a workaround to make it work which takes at least 2 minutes to work properly. A lot can go wrong in 2 minutes with kids. This issue happens very randomly and there is no prior warning. Earlier tesla told me that it had to do something with the climate. If it's too hot outside then the door sensors might get fried up, which I think is not completely true. I have heard different explanations from their different technician. Well yesterday when it happened, it was 34F and windy. I was outside of the car in this cold weather trying to get my daughter out of the car and figuring out how to open these damn falcon doors.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-26
- VIN: 7SAXCBE57NF
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: It have come to my attention by Tesla that NHTSA instructed Tesla to disabled auto steering for a week time, unlike in the past that it would be disabled for the rest of the drive, we have a 2023 Mercedes eqs with same system and had other cars in the past with this system, this does not exist in any other car manufacturer and you did not instruct any other manufacturers to suspend the system for a whole week if unattended, this is a gross discrimination against Tesla and grounds for a lawsuit for discrimination
LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-17
- VIN: 7SAXCDE52NF
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Ever since a recent software update, when turn signal is activated, right fender camera feed appears on screen but is completely black instead of showing a visual of the right blind spot. Due to this other features such as Autopilot, Automatic Emergency Braking, and likely most of the ADAS functions are also disabled. Due to the vehicle's poor natural visibility, there is a high reliance on the camera systems functioning properly. Not having a blind spot camera endangers turns and lane changes, especially if one has become accustomed to their usage. With most if not all the ADAS features disabled, we are returning to a 1990's level of auto safety. The problem remains unresolved despite a recent 2 week stint in Tesla service. Since this is most likely a software issue (possibly a regression introduced with the recent rear camera recall fix) there is no recourse except for Tesla to issue a bug fix. The car was returned to me without resolution. I'm not the only party experiencing this problem. It seems the only constant is it's a problem with the fender cameras however whether it's the right or left side is variable. WHEELS PROBLEM

- VIN: 7SAXCBE6XNF
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: No horn in middle of the wheel. Tried pressing the small button and instead it caused windshield wipers to activate.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: 7SAXCBE54NF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: My vehicle does not have a horn in the center. It is a button. Elon Musk told the public over and over they all had a center horn that just wasn’t activated yet, that would enable it in a future software update and that was a lie. This button horn on the right hand side never functions when needed. There is no “cover the entire right side” with your hand to make it honk when you’re quickly reacting to a safety hazard. It sets off the wipers usually without even honking. I don’t mind the weird turn signals, but this needs to be fixed. Now that they’ve announced a new model with a regular horn and lied to us about our cars actually having them but being “disabled” I think we are entitled to a retrofit of a brand new one with a center horn like every other vehicle on the road. Rear cross traffic alert? What real cross traffic alert? After I bought this car I was absolutely floored to find that when I back up, it doesn’t alert or beep or make any sound if a car is coming or a human is walking behind it. I was inches from hitting a neighbors child on a bike once and I am still shaken from what could have happened had I not heard someone yell. The car will scream and beep and flip out at every little other issue but doesn’t have this? Every car I’ve had since 2008 has had this feature. It is absolutely unacceptable that this noisy beeping computer car doesn’t have any audible rear cross traffic alerts. Please force them to fix this. It is DANGEROUS. The rear window is so high up it’s impossible to see beneath it. If I’d hit that child, I never would have forgiven myself. Please force them to add an audible warning.

I can tell you that I absolutely love this car! It's incredibly reliable and the instrument panel is so simple to use. The air conditioning is also super efficient, which is great because I can stay comfortable indoors without any worries. The seats are also really comfortable and the doors are easy to open and close. Plus, this car is an absolute blast to drive - it can go from 0 to 60 MPH in just 2.5 seconds! And the fact that my solar panels keep it fully charged is just the cherry on top. The only things I'm not crazy about are the horn button and the turn signal setup. And while I'm not a huge fan of the service being entirely run by artificial intelligence, I understand the appeal. Overall, though, I'm really happy with this car!

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your vehicle so much that you're planning on purchasing another one after the lease is up! However, I noticed that you had some trouble with the tires. It seems that the Model X is quite heavy and has a lot of torque, which can be tough on tires. The factory Continental tires started to separate and pulled to the right, and the tire dealer advised that passenger car tires have not advanced enough to handle the load. It's important to keep in mind that the Model X has 2 different size tires on the front and back, so replacing all 4 tires can be quite costly at approximately $1600. Perhaps in the future, Tesla can work with tire manufacturers to develop a tire that can handle the excessive weight. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

The car is impressively quiet and provides a comfortable ride with tremendous acceleration. Additionally, the 360 range is great!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the self-driving car. I must say, it's amazing and clean! I've been driving it for a while now and I've never been in a crash. The gull-wing doors are real show-stoppers, and there's no other vehicle like this one. Thanks for letting me share!

Here is my list after 3 months of having the Model X. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with the car. It came with two broken wheel well plastic frames, and the middle seats malfunctioned and had to be replaced. Additionally, the screen malfunctioned and a chip had to be replaced. Since we got it back from that service, the seats no longer respond to preset settings for each driver, and the passenger seatbelt tightens no matter the situation and does not release, only keeps getting tighter to the point you are pinned to the seat. Smart summons has only worked well 2 times, and the rubber around the window bent and creased. The rubber also looks unfinished on both front doors. The driver side window rolls up and down very slowly and rubs the window on the way up, you can notice on the window where it’s rubbing. I have to manually connect my phone each time I get in because it no longer does it automatically even though it’s set to priority phone. Regenerative braking works whenever it wants to, never consistent. We paid an extra $10,000 for the self-driving premium package, Full self-driving capability. Unfortunately, every time we have used it, it nearly crashed and definitely would if our hands were not on the wheel. It doesn’t gradually lose control, it’s a jerk reaction. Each time we have tried it, it jerked toward the divider on the highway. It speeds up when going to an off-ramp for an exit. When the highway has turns or curves, it doesn’t recognize to slow down. The back truck closed on me, and the doors don’t respond if a child is under it; only in front of it. Additionally, the middle seat does not recline enough to feel like you are laying back, and the front console cannot fit two coffee cups next to each other. We are currently looking into a refund. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

While driving on the highway, my car suddenly shut down, leaving me without Bluetooth and sound. Despite my frustration, I contacted Tesla for assistance. Although they requested my VIN number, I was able to provide it and they were able to help me resolve the issue. While the situation was stressful, I appreciate Tesla's commitment to ensuring their customers' safety. While there may have been some miscommunication during the call, I am confident in Tesla's ability to provide excellent customer service and support. Moving forward, I will be sure to keep my VIN number handy in case of any future issues.

We recently purchased a Model X, but unfortunately did not receive any notification of delivery. We had to rush up to the dealership last minute on Memorial Day, after waiting for 14 months, to avoid losing our place in line. We only found out about the delivery through the app on the Thursday prior to the holiday weekend, which was our first and only notification. Our only delivery options were for the following Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Despite the inconvenience, we were able to delay our trip to England and work out the financing for the vehicle. However, upon receiving the car, we encountered some issues with the key card and were unable to add it to the app. We tried to contact the dealership and Tesla customer service, but unfortunately did not receive a response. We hope to resolve this issue soon and appreciate any assistance. Thank you.I would suggest waiting for Rivian or any other EV before purchasing a Tesla. Unfortunately, Decatur forgot to sign the purchase agreement and have us sign it, which caused the bank to cancel the check. Additionally, they failed to send a picture of the window sticker as instructed on the bank's draft check's instructions. We have not heard back from the manager at Decatur as promised numerous times. It would be great if Tesla could address this issue. I will never forget this experience and have been sharing our story every chance I get.

The car's road noise and battery life are subpar, and the cabin materials and seat comfort leave something to be desired.
