The Tesla Model X is a battery electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV built by Tesla, Inc. since 2015. Developed from the full-sized sedan platform of the Tesla Model S, the vehicle notably uses falcon wing doors for passenger access.

The Model X has an EPA size class as an SUV, and shares around 30 percent of its content with the Model S, half of the originally planned 60 percent, and weighs about 10 percent more. Both the Model X and Model S are produced at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California. The prototype was unveiled at Tesla's design studios in Hawthorne, California on February 9, 2012. First deliveries of the Model X began in September 2015. After one full year on the market, in 2016, the Model X ranked seventh among the world's best-selling plug-in cars. A refresh of the Tesla Model X was introduced in 2021, offering a new "Plaid" performance model, along with a revised interior, powertrain, and suspension.

As of September 2023, the Model X is available as a Long-Range version with an estimated EPA range of 348 miles (560 km) and a high performance "Plaid" version with an estimated EPA range of 333 miles (536 km).

  • Summary: Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2016-2023 Model S, Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving Beta (FSD Beta) software or pending installation.  The FSD Beta system may allow the vehicle to act unsafe around intersections, such as traveling straight through an intersection while in a turn-only lane, entering a stop sign-controlled intersection without coming to a complete stop, or proceeding into an intersection during a steady yellow traffic signal without due caution. In addition, the system may respond insufficiently to changes in posted speed limits or not adequately account for the driver's adjustment of the vehicle's speed to exceed posted speed limits.
  • Consequence: FSD Beta software that allows a vehicle to exceed speed limits or travel through intersections in an unlawful or unpredictable manner increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Tesla will release an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge.  Owner notification letters were mailed April 15, 2023.  Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752.  Tesla's number for this recall is SB-23-00-001.

  • Manufacturer: Tesla, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ADAS:AUTONOMOUS/SELF DRIVING:SOFTWARE
  • Summary: Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Model S and Model X, 2017-2022 Model 3, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles. The "rolling stop" functionality available as part of the Full Self-Driving (Beta) software may allow the vehicle to travel through an all-way stop intersection without first coming to a stop.
  • Consequence: Failing to stop at a stop sign can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Tesla will perform an over-the-air (OTA) software update that disables the "rolling stop" functionality, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 28, 2022. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-22-00-001.

(Tesla) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Tesla Model S and 2016-2018 Model X vehicles with a center display equipped with a NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor and an 8GB eMMC NAND flash memory device. When the 8GB eMMC NAND flash memory device for the center display reaches lifetime wear, the eMMC controller will no longer be able to maintain the integrity of the filesystem, causing a failure in some of the center display functions.
  • Consequence: The eMMC controller wear-out condition can cause the loss of the rearview camera display, defrost/defog control settings, and exterior turn signal lighting, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Owners should ensure their vehicles are operating firmware release 2020.48.48.12 or newer, which will alert owners if the eMMC is approaching lifetime wear. Tesla will notify owners, and will replace the VCM daughterboard with one containing an enhanced eMMC controller, free of charge. The recall began March 29, 2021. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-21-21-001.

  • Remedy: Tesla will notify owners, and service centers will replace both the left and right electric parking brake calipers, free of charge. The recall began March 6, 2018. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-17-33-002.

Negative 2017 Tesla Model x car reviews

  1. Bernhard Rohan 2024-11-28

After purchasing the Model X, a part of the applique between the falcon wings flew off while I was driving at 75 mph on the 417 in Florida. Despite my concerns, the service department has been unable to locate a replacement part, as they claim that this has never happened before. Unfortunately, this has rendered the car virtually useless, as I cannot drive it in the rain or wash it properly without risking damage to the wires and cables that operate the falcon doors. However, I am confident that the service department will find a solution to this issue soon.

In July 2022, I purchased a 2016 Tesla Model X P90D from a private seller who was upgrading to a newer model. As someone who wanted to try an electric SUV with a long driving range, Tesla was the obvious choice with its supercharging network. I was fortunate to transfer over the free supercharging and extended warranty from the previous owner. However, I have encountered some unexpected costs, such as the high insurance cost of over $4,000 per year in BC Canada. Additionally, the unique tire size and inability to rotate them as much has resulted in more frequent replacements. Despite these challenges, I have found the car to be a reliable mode of transportation. While there have been some minor issues, such as the voice command feature and air suspension, they were resolved through updates and replacements. Although the car has depreciated in value since my purchase, I am still satisfied with my decision to buy it. Overall, I am confident in the quality and performance of my Tesla Model X P90D.This car has too many issues and is too expensive to maintain for a luxury vehicle that's 8 years old. The windows on the front driver and passenger doors do not work properly to close and seal for driving in freezing temperatures, and the mirrors do not fold in or out correctly in freezing temperatures. This has resulted in me starting to drive without realizing my windows were not out and struggling to fix it in a safe way while driving. However, I am confident in my assessment of the car's issues and believe that it is important to address them in a timely manner.

If you are considering purchasing a Tesla, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with the autopilot feature. While marketed as a great feature, it has been known to be unsafe and there have been incidents where drivers have been seriously hurt. It is also worth noting that the autopilot feature is still in beta testing, and Tesla is using consumer data to improve it. Additionally, some customers have reported issues with the doors and sensors, which can be frustrating. Overall, it is important to do your research and make an informed decision before making a purchase.

  4. Melvin Schulist 2024-01-17

The 2017 Model X has had some issues since I purchased it in July 2017. However, I have been able to enjoy its nice acceleration and quiet ride. Although the instrument panel is a bit strange, I am confident that the issues I have experienced will be resolved. While there have been some problems with start-up batteries, key fobs, light bulbs, and air leaks in the tires, I am confident that these issues will be resolved. In the event of a flat tire, I was disappointed to learn that neither the tow drivers nor the dealership had a spare tire available. However, I am confident that the dealership will be able to order a tire and resolve the issue in a timely manner. While there have been some delays in the promised updates and charging stations, I am confident that these will be resolved in due course. Overall, I believe that the Model X is a great car and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality vehicle.

  2. Lavern Hessel 2024-11-27

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that in my opinion, this is the best car on the market!

  3. Julien Upton 2024-11-04

    I love everything about it!

  4. Christ Huels 2024-10-24

The Model X is an all-electric car that comes with a hefty price tag of around $90-100K for a used car. However, if you can find a low mileage Model X P90D in excellent condition, it's definitely worth considering. The 2017 75D or 100D regular version (not the 'P' version) has about the same look and feel as the 2016 version. During my test drive, I tried the P90D X with 'Ludicrous Mode', which is an option that makes a very fast car even faster. Although it's not very beneficial for the average driver, it can be useful for racing or merging onto the freeway quickly. It's a 'nice to have' feature, but not essential for a commuter car. I recommend test driving both the 'P' and 'non-P' versions at a Tesla dealer to see which one suits you best. Keep in mind that a new 2017 P100D with Ludicrous mode will cost over $140,000. Therefore, a 2016 Model X P90D with under 10K miles at a price of around $90K is a great deal, saving you a substantial $50,000. However, if you bought it 'new' in 2016, it would be a huge loss. The car I test drove had Autopilot v 1.0, not the latest v 2.0 Autopilot, which means that the 2016 version I drove could not eventually be a 100% self-driving car. Both versions come with Tesla's 50,000 mile 4-year warranty and an 8-year warranty on the battery and motors. Please confirm these numbers with the Tesla dealer.

The EV range is fantastic and it's so convenient to refuel at superchargers!
