The Tesla Model X is a battery electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV built by Tesla, Inc. since 2015. Developed from the full-sized sedan platform of the Tesla Model S, the vehicle notably uses falcon wing doors for passenger access.

The Model X has an EPA size class as an SUV, and shares around 30 percent of its content with the Model S, half of the originally planned 60 percent, and weighs about 10 percent more. Both the Model X and Model S are produced at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California. The prototype was unveiled at Tesla's design studios in Hawthorne, California on February 9, 2012. First deliveries of the Model X began in September 2015. After one full year on the market, in 2016, the Model X ranked seventh among the world's best-selling plug-in cars. A refresh of the Tesla Model X was introduced in 2021, offering a new "Plaid" performance model, along with a revised interior, powertrain, and suspension.

As of September 2023, the Model X is available as a Long-Range version with an estimated EPA range of 348 miles (560 km) and a high performance "Plaid" version with an estimated EPA range of 333 miles (536 km).

Common Tesla Model x problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Tesla Model X, several common problems have been identified:

  • Windshield Susceptibility to Cracking: The panoramic windshield of the Model X, while offering an unobstructed view, is susceptible to cracking from minor impacts like small stones. These cracks, although not posing a safety risk according to Tesla, can be expensive to repair and hinder driver visibility, impacting safety and driving experience.
  • Suspension System Concerns: The suspension system of the Model X has raised red flags among owners due to reports of strange noises and premature wear and tear. These issues not only lead to discomfort during rides but also result in costly repairs or replacements, particularly concerning for a luxury SUV intended for long journeys under various conditions.
  • Build Quality Issues: The Tesla Model X has faced criticism for poor build quality, especially concerning the airbags. The airbags in some Model X vehicles have failed to deploy, posing a safety risk during accidents. This issue has led to recalls and repairs for thousands of vehicles, highlighting a crucial safety flaw in the Model X.
  • Electrical and Infotainment System Problems: Owners have reported various electrical issues, including freezing screens, unresponsive controls, and random system reboots. The infotainment system, controlled through a central touchscreen, has been a common source of complaints, impacting the overall driving experience and functionality of the vehicle.
  • Charging Concerns: Some owners have expressed concerns about charging-related issues, affecting the convenience and usability of the Model X. These problems, along with insufficient range for some users, have added to the frustrations of owning a Tesla Model X.

These common problems with the Tesla Model X highlight a range of issues that have impacted the ownership experience for many users, from safety concerns to functionality and build quality issues.

Which year of Model X is reliable?

2016 and earlier models had some growing pains – things like falcon wing door issues and general reliability quirks. It's like the early days of a new tech gadget. Cool, but a bit risky. 2017 and onwards are usually seen as better years.

What is the most common issue with Tesla's?

Battery and Charging Related Issues

One of the key components in any Tesla vehicle is its high-capacity battery pack. While Tesla's battery technology has come a long way, issues related to charging and battery life can still arise.

What are the disadvantages of the Tesla X?

Charging System Frustrations

This is further compounded by reported difficulties in getting the car to charge consistently or maintain a charge. Another significant drawback of the Model X, for the older models, is its lagging fast-charging capabilities compared to its more affordable sibling, the Model 3.

Why did Tesla stop making Model X?

The Model S and Model X were removed from sale in December 2021, to enable the manufacturer to concentrate on the growing demand for its cheaper Model 3 and Model Y cars.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-18
  • VIN: 7SAXCDE54NF
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I am writing to express a safety concern regarding the Tesla Model X. I have found that the location of the horn is difficult to identify and activate, especially during emergency situations where quick reflexes are critical. In high-stress scenarios, the horn is a vital tool for alerting other drivers and avoiding potential accidents. However, the current design of the Tesla Model X makes it challenging to quickly locate and press the horn button. This could lead to delayed response times, increasing the risk of collisions or other hazardous situations. Given the importance of this issue, I strongly urge Tesla to redesign the horn button to make it more intuitive and easier to access under duress. Additionally, I recommend that any modifications or improvements related to this concern be made available to all Tesla Model X owners free of charge. Ensuring that this safety enhancement is accessible to everyone will help protect Tesla drivers, passengers, and other road users.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-16
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 7SAXCDE55NF
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was stopped at an intersection in the left turn lane heading southeast at a busy intersection. Left turn signal was on and within 3 minutes of getting to the intersection the vehicle experiences an uncommanded full power acceleration into a very busy intersection. To avoid oncoming traffic, I veered to the right while breaking which did not stop the vehicle. Avoiding a traffic pole and continuing into a business empty parking lot which usually is not empty due to loitering in the area, and avoiding the building the vehicle continued accelerating at a high rate of speed and was stopped only because it hit a metal pole which was hidden by a large bush on the side of the business. If the pole would have not stopped the vehicle it would have continued into oncoming traffic in the north bound lane. Air bags were deployed. The only visible injury I received was burns from the airbag on my right arm and sever busing on my abdomen which has taken 4 months to resolve. The police were on the scene immediately, my insurance company representatives have seen the videos produce by myself and Tesla sent to me via email. The insurance had put a hold on the vehicle which was towed to Carparts. Tesla has never contacted me or my insurance company that I know of besides my request by email for the additional data. I have driven a Tesla model S for 7 yrs prior to purchasing the Model X. The Model X had an incident once that it stopped on its own while I was driving on an interstate. I veered to the right to get off the highway and thankful no one was behind me. There wasn't any indication that anything was wrong and may have been something corrected by an automatic update which dealt with exiting right off a highway which I was not doing but this incident never happened again.

  • Summary: Many newer models of Teslas do not include a horn in the middle of the steering wheel. Instead there is a small button on the left side which is impossible to find to warn others of a possible collision! The driver gets distracted trying to find the horn and makes the situation even worse by not reacting quick enough. They released a new version of the wheel with a horn but those who are out of warranty have to pay a large amount for a basic yet hugs safety oversight. They should be replaced on with recall free of charge.

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model X. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the driver’s side rear passenger’s seat belt failed to release the child occupying the seat. The contact stated that after five minutes the seat belt was released. The contact then stated that while driving at approximately 20 MPH, with the front passenger and the driver’s side rear seats occupied, the restraint system fault for each passenger was displayed. Additionally, the contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the messages appeared intermittently while both seats were unoccupied. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that a seat belt module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000.

  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: The passenger side back door does not open consistently leading to loss of egress. Although the other doors do function regularly, removing a child from a car seat is nearly impossible when accessing from another door. The door also struggles to close consistently, and has closed on my son in the past. The inconsistency of a functioning falcon wing door is a safety risk and it continues to worsen despite many attempts to repair the sensors. The Tesla service center has attempted to repair the door and sensors 4 times without success. The most recent service appointment they stated the door was not opening correctly because it was getting stuck in “indoor mode” sensing something over the top of the car. They replaced the sensor but the problem has not improved. I have notified Tesla of the ongoing issue multiple times without any response, even via certified mail with proof of delivery. There are no warning lamps, beeps or any notifications showing an error in door function.

  • Summary: The yoke steering wheel only had a small horn button on the right side, only accessible by right thumb. If you are in the middle of a turn that requires more than a quarter turn, then your hand cannot possible be in the right place to use the horn. The lack of a horn in the center of the steering (like every other car) is unsafe. • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-20
  • VIN: 7SAXCBE69NF
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Center steering wheel horn is not included on these vehicles, which should be considered a significant safety issue as we are trained from a young age to hit the center of the steering wheel/yoke in the event of an imminent accident. I was recently driving when another vehicle ran a stop sign, and I was barely able to avoid them; however, when hitting the "horn" to alert the other driver, it didn't work as the horn button is not in a typical location. This should be considered a significant safety risk. Elon Musk himself indicated a software update would fix this issue; however, it has not. Tesla now indicates it requires a new wheel/yoke and has not yet made it available or covered under warranty.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-11
  • VIN: 7SAXCBE59NF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: A couple of days ago, when I was dropping off my child at school, I parked in a spot that required parallel parking to save time as I was in a rush. After reversing into the spot, I just needed to move forward a bit by 1-2 feet. I naturally slide the gear shift up on the screen. Unfortunately, it didn't slide into place, and the car was still in reverse (R), but I didn't realize it. I was already very close to the car behind me. When I pressed the accelerator, the car continued to back up. Luckily, I slammed the brake, avoiding a collision. Just wanted to share that even after a year and a half of driving a Model X, mistakes can still happen. After reading what happened to [XXX] , I posted what happened to me on a social platform and someone else shared they had a similar experience that needed up with a crash. So I decided to report mine and encouraged them to do the same. I like the minimalist design but I need to stay alive to enjoy it. As Tesla is moving away from stalkless design in more models, I hope they can do something to make the current shift more noticeable. Latest negative Tesla Model x car reviews

  1. Domingo Pouros 2025-10-21

    Vehicle year: 2022

The issue with the new $98k Model X was reported through the Tesla app, and despite multiple follow-up service calls, the vibration issue remains unresolved. Legal action is being taken to address the matter.

  2. Desmond Nader 2025-10-16

    Vehicle year: 2022

The car is alright for local driving, but not recommended for long distance trips. Unfortunately, the service provided is extremely poor. There seems to be a lack of communication and follow-up, and it's difficult to get a response. I even had to drive my car from Charleston to Savannah (2.5 hours each way) for service, despite being promised pick-up and delivery. Additionally, my model X claims to have a range of 370 miles on a full charge, but I'm only getting 245 miles. The delivery process was also not up to par.

  3. Evan Harber 2025-10-11

    Vehicle year: 2016

We purchased an X in September 2016, coming out of a Model S. The X is more comfortable overall and easier to get in and out of. The ride height is better if you prefer a taller car. The interior is nice, comfortable, and luxurious, but the fit and finish of the materials are not quite up to par with other luxury brands like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. The car looks great overall on the exterior, but the large amounts of chrome do get dirty easily. There is a decent amount of black molding on the car, which improves its appearance overall. Although we did have some quality issues with our car, such as misaligned panels, doors, and a rear hatch that had to be disassembled and replaced, Tesla's service was very good and responsive. We did have a few paint issues that are appearing on the rear of the car and will need to be addressed potentially. Overall, Tesla quality isn't quite there yet compared to some luxury brands, but perhaps some new builds are improving. Having said all that, the car is awesome, drives wonderfully, is faster than you need (even as a regular 90D), and the range is great 99.9% of the time. The technology in the car is leagues above other cars and is just easy to use due to the lack of oddly labeled buttons and knobs. The X is an expensive car, but saving on gas, the overall utility of it, and comfort do put it up there with other luxury SUVs that are not far off. Our main concern is the quality (mostly resolved now) and longevity that goes along with that. The first 4 years of warranty will be valuable, and although Tesla has not yet offered an extended 4-year warranty, they will likely do so at a cost soon. After 8 years, we will have to see how well the car and FWDs are holding up.

  4. Morris Kassulke 2025-10-07

    Vehicle year: 2020

The issue with the new $98k Model X was reported through the Tesla app, and despite multiple follow-up service calls over a period of three months, the vibration issue remains unresolved. The matter is currently being addressed by legal representatives.

  5. Gustave Boyer 2025-09-29

    Vehicle year: 2017

In June of 2015, I ordered a Tesla X and it arrived in September of 2016. While many have already described the amazing features of this car, I would like to add that the electronics, sleek profile, acceleration, and easy-to-use controls are all fantastic. However, there are some areas that could use improvement. The interior can be a bit noisy and choppy, and the tires are quite loud. Additionally, the suspension is not adjustable, which can be a downside. When my wife first got into the car, she was a bit confused about where to put things, as the cup holders and storage space are not the most convenient. The second row seats also do not fold flat, and there is limited space to hang or lay clothes. The bright sun can be bothersome as it shines through the large windshield, and the visors are a bit toy-like. The rear view mirror is small and the rear window is also quite small, which can be a safety concern. The gull wing doors are fun at first, but can become inconvenient in certain situations. The back seats are a bit narrow, and legroom is not as spacious as some may think. Despite these minor issues, the Tesla X is still a great car. After 9000 miles, the ride is still a bit harsh and there are some rattles, but the local Tesla service center has been helpful. I did learn that the electric vehicle range is affected by temperatures below 40F, but this is a common issue with electric cars. Overall, I am still happy with my purchase and would recommend the Tesla X to others.April 2021 update. Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that I sold the X and bought a Mach E. I must say, the Mach E is much more comfortable and, so far, glitch free. Have a great day!

Latest positive Tesla Model x car reviews

  1. Cedrick Luettgen 2025-10-06

    Vehicle year: 2017

The Model X is a crossover with a motorized hatchback and up to three rows of seats, seven in total, built on the frame of the Model S sedan. It is approximately 2 inches longer and 10 inches higher than the Model S. The battery-powered drive units from the Model S are inherited by the X, with three all-wheel-drive configurations: 75D, 90D, and P100D. The number indicates the kilowatt hour energy capacity rating of the big battery pack, the D stands for dual motors, and the P indicates the super-fast performance model. Like the Model S, the X is very quick 0-60, leaving all other comparable SUVs far behind. I have the seven-seat, 90D option. With the two third-row seats folded flat, there is a reasonable amount of storage space. There would be more if the second-row seats had been designed to fold, which they now do in newer versions. The controls and Autopilot systems inherited from Mobileye Corp. software work quite well, but because Tesla broke up with Mobileye, they will probably never be improved. Because of its height, the X is much easier to get in and out of than the S, especially the second row via the iconic Falcon Wing Doors. The third row has limited legroom, which is okay for small kids. The self-presenting front doors and spectacular rear doors have sensors to minimize the chance of banging into people or objects. The autopilot software features in current and recent models were developed by Tesla. With 9 cameras, a radar system, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a far more powerful computer than I have, current models promise full self-driving capability features as a future option. The windshield rises overhead to provide a spectacular vista for the driver. The rearview mirror in my car is somewhat blocked by the second-row middle seat headrest. This is not a problem for taller drivers or the six-seat configuration. Newer designs have eliminated this issue. The Model X is a very comfortable car to drive on road trips. Although it uses about 15% more energy per mile, depending on speed, than the Model S because it pushes more air and is about 10% heavier, driving 600 miles a day takes about an hour longer than with the S due to added charging time at the Tesla Superchargers. If you're interested in an ultra-safe, super-quick, up to seven passenger car that can park and practically drive itself for $100,000+/-, the Model X is definitely worth considering. You'll be sporting the Tesla grin every time you get into it. After 4 years and 33,000 miles, I'm still delighted with the car. Not to mention, the only things needed at annual service visits are the cabin filter, windshield wipers, and windshield washer fluid, which you can take care of yourself. The only other routine maintenance that I have done is to buy new tires at 25,000 miles.

The Model X is incredibly spacious! In fact, we were able to comfortably fit two midsized dogs in boxes in the trunk, two teenagers in the back, and everyone's stuff for a winter vacation in the 5-seater. It's perfect for trips! The car has a fun and futuristic feel, and it's only slightly more expensive than the S. While some may find the falcon doors to be a bit unique, we personally love them. They're extremely practical compared to normal doors, and we've had no serious repairs over the 15 months we've owned it. Any minor issues, such as wind noise from a door or a dropped sensor, were fixed quickly and with a free loaner car to try. The only thing to note is that the paint may require a wrap if you're concerned about its longevity.

Over the past 12 years, I've owned 18 different vehicles. Recently, I purchased the Model X 100D and it has exceeded all of my expectations. It accelerates faster than my Golf R, Nismo 350 Z, or Infinity M class, and is just as luxurious as my MB E63 AMG and rides as well as my Cadillac CTS-V. Even when I had to take it off-road to pick up a sick child in the mountains, the car handled the 2 feet of snow with ease. It handles as well off-road as my Toyota Tacoma. The vehicle's torque charging system is also impressive, allowing me to drive down a 65 mph 5-6% grade for 20 miles without having to hit my brakes once. The battery even charged on the way down the canyon! I can't express how amazing this vehicle is. Elon Musk not only built a competitor, he built a game changer. After 4 years, I haven't spent a single dollar on maintenance other than tires. Tesla has truly changed the game.

It accelerates faster than my Golf R, Nismo 350 Z, or Infinity M class. The car is as luxurious as my MB E63 AMG and rides as well as my Cadillac CTS-V. Even when I had to take it off-road to pick up a sick child in the mountains, the roads were unplowed and recommended chains only, but I simply raised the suspension and easily drove miles and miles in 2 feet of snow. It handles as well off-road as my Toyota Tacoma. Driving down the canyon was a breeze, I didn't have to hit my brakes once because of how the vehicle torque charging works. The canyon is a 65 mph 5-6% grade for 20 miles. Finally, because of the torque charging, my battery charged on the way down the canyon. I can't express how impressed I am with this vehicle. Elon Musk not only built a competitor, he built a game changer. After 1 year, this is simply the most amazing vehicle I have ever owned. My opinion is even better than last year. After 2 years, the only maintenance required has been tire rotation. As of 7/1/20, I can confidently say that this is a great car!!! I love the software upgrades, and even better they update like my iPhone updates. The vehicle feels new all of the time. After 3 1/2 years, there have been very few issues and zero out-of-pocket maintenance. It runs great, still fast, and sleek. I love the updates that automatically download. After four years, not a single dollar has been spent on maintenance other than tires. Tesla has truly changed the game.

After writing a bad review about my first Model X and trading it in on an X5, I ended up going back to a newer Model X. I absolutely love it and cannot imagine going back to a gas car anytime soon. Although road trips in Pennsylvania can be a bit time-consuming and require more planning compared to states like California where Superchargers are everywhere, it's a small price to pay for never having to buy gas again.
