The Suzuki SX4 is a subcompact car and crossover produced by Japanese automaker Suzuki since 2006. A successor of the Aerio tall hatchback and sedan, the first-generation model was available as a hatchback and sedan, with the former available in both front- and four-wheel drive and as a rebadged version in Europe called the Fiat Sedici.

In 2013, the second generation was launched, called Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (or Suzuki S-Cross in India)— now exclusively a subcompact crossover SUV. The first- and second-generation SX4s sold alongside one another until 2014. The SX4 sedan was replaced with the Suzuki Ciaz. The third-generation model was introduced in 2021 as a heavily modified version of the previous model and was only produced in Hungary for the European market. For the Indian market, the S-Cross was replaced by the taller Grand Vitara.

The SX4 is an abbreviation of "Sports X-over 4 Seasons". The SX4 designation was previously used by American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the 1981 through 1983 model years for a sporty liftback model in its line of all-wheel-drive AMC Eagle passenger cars. THE SECOND FAILURE WAS FOUND WHEN I NOTICED THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE WAS AT 15 PSI. ONCE AGAIN THE TPSM VALVE WAS CRACKED LENGTH WISE. THERE IS DEFINITELY A PROBLEM IT APPEARS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THESE VALVES BY SCHRADER ELECTRONICS. INFO ON THE TPSM VALVE: PART NO: 43130-54J2 FCC ID: 2546A-SUZ3MA4 SCHRADER ELECTRONICS BARCODE: *09754328* AND *09754116* I'M HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING THIS ISSUE RESOLVED BY THE DEALERSHIP ON A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 1 YEAR 4 MONTHS OLD AND I HAVE EXTENSIVE PLATINUM WARRANTY. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. A SUDDEN FAILURE BY THE REMAINING VALVES COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATH AS WAS THE CASE IN 2008 TPSM VALVE FAILURES. WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR I WAS NOT ABLE TO DRIVE IT FOR THE FIRST WEEK DUE TO FAMILY HEALTH ISSUES THAT I HAD TO STAY AT HOME FOR. IN TWO DAYS AFTER I DID DRIVE AGAIN I ALMOST PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF AND WOULD HAVE HIT A CAR COMING AROUND A CURVE THAT COLD NOT BE SEEN BECAUSE OF THIS DANGEROUS CONSTRUCTION. SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD THAT SAME CLOSE CALL OVER 1 DOZEN TIMES. IT IS SUCH A PROBLEM THAT I HARDLY EVER DRIVE THE CAR MORE THAN I HAVE TO GO TO A STORE FOR FOOD. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2010 Suzuki Sx4.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
  • Summary: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2010-2013 SX4 vehicles manufactured July 16, 2009, to November 1, 2012, and 2010-2013 Kizashi vehicles manufactured October 13, 2009, to October 31, 2012. The shift selector can be moved out of the "Park" position without depressing the brake pedal.
  • Consequence: If the shift selector is moved out of the "Park" position while the brake pedal is not depressed, the vehicle may unexpectedly roll, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shift selector assembly and inspect, and if necessary, replace the shift knob, free of charge. The recall began January 16, 2015. Owners may contact Suzuki customer service at 1-714-996-7040. Suzuki's number for this recall is VL.

  • Summary: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, over time, the OCS sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail due to repeated flexing of the mat from use of the seat. As a result, during a crash necessitating deployment, the air bag will deploy regardless of whether the front seat occupant is an adult or a child.
  • Consequence: Air bag deployment with a child in the front passenger side seat increases the risk of injury to that child.
  • Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners and dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion assembly (which includes the OCS sensor mat) free of charge. Sufficient quantities of parts are not currently available to fix all of the affected vehicles. Owners will be notified of the recall in October 2013 and will receive a second notification when parts are available to have their vehicle repaired. The recall began on May 23, 2014. While I had hoped for better fuel efficiency, I must say that the car is otherwise great. If you are in the market for a fuel-efficient car, I would suggest considering other options. Additionally, I have found that the cloth seat cover seems a bit thin.

I traded in my 4-cylinder Ford Ranger for the SX4 and was pleased to find that the gas mileage for both vehicles is the same: 27 city/30 highway. However, the SX4 has AWD, which was a primary reason for my purchase. It supposedly carries the lowest MSRP of any AWD vehicle sold in the U.S. Although I have owned the SX4 for six months, nothing on it appears cheap. The glowing consumer reviews on Edmunds sealed the deal (thanks Edmunds' readers).     This is my third Suzuki sedan (Esteem, Aerio, now SX4). It's essentially an Aerio with all the necessary refinements, including a shorter stick throw, stronger brakes (ABS), variable intermittent wipers, improved cornering stability, quieter all around, smoother engine, improved front bumper clearance, improved gas mileage (I'm getting 31.5 mpg all around with gentle driving), stronger AC, and paint that seems to hold the turtle wax better. The gearing is shorter, so expect frequent upshifting, but it's much stronger at lower RPMs, so there's less frequent downshifting on inclines. It has excellent road manners, even at speeds as high as 75 mph. I've had no problems after 6 months and 3800 miles.

Despite being a naturally aspirated four-cylinder, it boasts an impressive amount of low-end torque, and the manual six-speed transmission uses that power to great effect. It easily keeps pace with more powerful engines, and the 150 horsepower is more than enough. In terms of handling, it outperforms all of the other comparable vehicles I considered, and it feels incredibly solid and safe. While the option of a sunroof and leather would have been nice, I had those installed myself, so I couldn't ask for more! Additionally, the styling is top-notch, designed in Italy, and it receives a lot of compliments.
