2004 Land rover Freelander problems

The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.

After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).

After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

Common 2004 Land rover Freelander problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Land Rover Freelander 2004, several common problems have been reported:

  • Power Steering Problems: Complaints include a whining sound from the power steering pump, indicating potential issues with the pump's life. Additionally, difficulties in turning the wheel fully from left to right may signal problems with the steering rack.
  • Sunroof Issues: Some owners have experienced problems with the sunroof jamming, particularly in models produced between 1997 and 2005. It is advised to thoroughly inspect the sunroof for any signs of malfunction before or after test driving the vehicle.
  • Handbrake Concerns: Older Freelander models (1997-2003) may have issues with a loose handbrake ratchet, impacting its effectiveness. Prospective buyers are advised to test the handbrake on inclines to ensure it holds position securely.
  • Bodywork Vulnerabilities: The Freelander's bodywork, despite being a soft-roader with low ground clearance, can be prone to damage. It is crucial to inspect the underside of the car for any gashes or scrapes, especially if the vehicle has been frequently driven near coastal areas where salt damage may occur.
  • Starting Issues: Some owners have reported difficulties with the engine starting, potentially due to fuel not reaching the engine components. Commonly, the low-pressure fuel pump connections may be at fault, requiring inspection and potential replacement.
  • EGR Valve Problems: Land Rover issued a directive in 2006 recommending cleaning the EGR valve on 2.0 Td4 models every 12,000 miles to prevent blockages. Neglecting this maintenance can lead to oil leaks and engine damage, emphasizing the importance of regular cleaning as outlined in the Freelander manual.
  • Remote Locking Troubles: Issues with remote locking systems have been reported, where the key and car may not communicate effectively. Owners are advised to first try replacing the battery in the key and follow specific procedures if the issue persists.

These common problems highlight the importance of thorough inspection and maintenance when considering the purchase of a Land Rover Freelander 2004 to ensure a reliable and trouble-free ownership experience.

What are the common faults of a Land Rover Freelander?

What are the common problems with a Freelander? Amongst the most commonly reported problems are suspension and steering tracking alignment issues, causing excessive and uneven wheel alignment, which shows up as uneven and premature tyre wear.

Are Land Rover Freelander reliable?

The Freelander 2 ranked 19th in our Driver Power 2017 used car survey, and was in the top 10 for safety, comfort, practicality and handling. But while 22nd for reliability is also great, 83rd for running costs isn't.

Is a Land Rover Freelander expensive to maintain?

Land Rover servicing is generally reasonable compared with other premium brands such as Mercedes, but there's a big, 10-year service to consider that covers the timing belt, as well as all of the fluids for the engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive system. This can run to more than £1000.

Is Land Rover Freelander 2005 a good car?

It may be Land Rover's entry-level model, but it still wears the best badge in the business. It's the finest off-road performer for its category and age and although fuel economy is a little eye watering around town, it's a decent car to drive around town.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-04-30
  • VIN: SALNE22274A
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: MY SON TURNED 16 ON MARCH 18, 2012. WE WANTED AN SUV THAT WOULD BE SAFE TO DRIVE. WE WANTED A CAR WITH LOWER MILEAGE. WE FOUND A 2004 LAND ROVER FREELANDER AT A LOCAL DEALER WITH ONLY 56,000 MILES. CAR WAS IN AWESOME SHAPE INSIDE AND OUT. NEW TIRES, ETC. PAID $9,500. A FEW DAYS LATER TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER IN PORTLAND OREGON TO HAVE THE CAR LOOKED OVER. YOU KNOW THE NORMAL OIL CHANGE, OR WHATEVER ELSE THEY DO ON A CAR AT 55K MILES. AFTER THEY LOOKED IT OVER THEY TOLD ME THE COILS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AND ALSO THE PLUGS. I SAID SURE WHATEVER. $1,200 LATER I HAD MY SON'S CAR BACK. A FEW WEEKS LATER IT HAD A ODOR TO IT, AND IT WAS HAVING PROBLEMS GOING UP HILLS AND THE ENGINE WAS MAKING STRANGE SOUNDS. A DAY LATER IT STALLED. HAD IT TOWED TO LAND ROVER DEALER IN PORTLAND OREGON AND THEY TOLD ME IT APPEARS THAT IS WAS OUT OF COOLANT. THEY THOUGHT AT FIRST IT MUST BE A FAULTY THERMOSTAT OR POSSIBLY THE WATER PUMP. NOPE. THEY CAME BACK WITH THERE IS COOLANT MIXING IN WITH THE ENGINE OIL. THAT IT WOULD ANOTHER $1,200 TO $1,500 JUST TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM ACTUALLY IS. TOLD ME IF IT WAS HEAD GASKETS OR SOMETHING IN THE BLOCK, IT WOULD COST AT LEAST $5,000 OR MORE TO REPAIR. THE LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP OFFERED TO REPLACE THE BLOWN HOSES AND THEY TOLD THEY COULD GET IT WORKING AGAIN BUT IT WAS NOT GOING TO RUN FOR VERY MUCH LONGER. I CHECKED WITH OTHER LAND ROVER SERVICE COMPANIES AND THEY ALL REFUSED TO EVEN LOOK AT THE FREELANDER AS THEY KNEW IT WAS NOT GOING TO TURN OUT WELL. I FINALLY FOUND A MECHANIC IN PORTLAND OREGON WHO AGREED TO TAKE IT APART AND FIX IT. THEY TOLD ME NO MORE THAN $3,500. WHAT WAS I SUPPOSE TO DO, WE PAID $9,500 AND SELLING IT FOR SCRAP SEEM LIKE A BAD IDEA. SO AS OF TODAY, JUNE 6TH I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE REPAIRS AT A LOCAL SHOP ON OUR 2004 LAND ROVER FREELANDER WITH ONLY 57K TO BE COMPLETED. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-04
  • VIN: SALNY22234A
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN APRIL 2010 AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS EVER SINCE. IT HAD 79,600 MILES ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT IT HAD JUST RECENTLY HAD A TRANSMISSION REPLACED. THEY DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO OPEN THE HOOD - PASSENGER SIDE. 2 MONTHS LATER AND IT DIES ON ME GOING DOWN THE STREET. I PULL OVER AND ANTIFREEZE IS RUNNING EVERYWHERE. THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING HAD SEPARATED IN TWO AND CAUSED THE CAR TO OVERHEAT. I CALLED THE CLOSEST LAND ROVER DEALER AND HE QUOTED ME $800 TO FIX IT. I SEARCHED ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THE PARTS TO FIX IT FOR $80. I REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT AND HOUSING (1 PIECE) AND GOT IT RUNNING AGAIN. SINCE THEN, THE SUNROOF HAS QUIT, BOTH REAR WINDOWS HAVE QUIT AND THE REAR SLIDING WINDOW WON'T OPEN BY KEY. THE DRIVER SIDE WINDSHIELD DEFROSTER WILL NOT WORK (ONLY THE PASSENGER SIDE) AND I HAVE NEVER HAD AN OWNERS MANUAL. THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR WILL NOT UNLOCK WITH THE KEYLESS ENTRY EITHER. NOW I GET TO THE ENGINE - IT STARTED RUNNING REAL ROUGH AND LOST ALOT OF POWER. I HAD A LOCAL MECHANIC RUN CODES ON IT AND THIS IS WHAT HE FOUND: P0303 - #3 CYLINDER MISFIRE; P1319 - MISFIRE EMISSION RELEVANT; P1471, 1472 - VIS MOTORS EVAP PURGE VALVE FLOW BLOCKED; P1475 - LEAK DETECTION PUMP LEAKAGE DIAGNOSTIC PUMP REED SWITCH DID NOT CLOSE; P 1775 - GEARBOX FAULT TRANSMISSION SYSTEM MIL FAULT. I ASKED HIS OPINION AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS PROBABLY NOT WORTH FIXING. HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT ALL OF THIS MEANT. HE WAS JUST GOING TO START TEARING IT DOWN AND SEE WHAT HE COULD FIX. I CAN'T AFFORD THAT. I LIVE PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK AND I REALLY THOUGHT THAT LAND ROVER HAD A GOOD NAME AND REPUTATION. I EMAILED AND CALLED THEM AND HAVE HAD NO LUCK TO THIS POINT. EVERYTHING I HAVE SEEN ON THIS MODEL PROVES THAT IT IS A VEHICLE THAT SHOULD BE PUT TO REST. I AM LOOKING FOR ANY HELP I CAN GET. *TR

IT IS VERY, VERY WELL DOCUMENTED THAT THERE IS A COMPLETE FAILURE IN THE COOLING SYSTEM IN THE FREELANDERS. CAN YOU PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? I HAVE ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE AUTOMATIC WINDOWS, INCLUDING ONE ACTUALLY STUCK PARTIALLY DOWN CURRENTLY BECAUSE I'M PAST WARRANTY. BUT THAT'S SMALL POTATOES COMPARED TO THE OVERHEATING ISSUE. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: MY 2004 FREELANDER WAS PURCHASED FROM ROYALTY AUTO SALES IN LITTLE FERRY NJ ON APRIL 19, 2010 WITH 52,000 MILES. WE ALSO PURCHASED FROM SAME DEALER A 1-YEAR WARRANTY FROM A WARRANTY COMPANY REPRESENTED BY THE DEALER MIDATLANTIC WARRANTY COMPANY. WE PUT A $6,500 DOWNPAYMENT ON THE VEHICLE, AND FINANCED $7,000. THE PROBLEM STARTED WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER DRIVING OFF THE LOT WITH AN OVERHEATING ISSUE WE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO SAID THERE WAS PROBABLY NOT ENOUGH ANTIFREEZE IN IT AND OFFERED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE FOR A FEW DAYS TO MAKE SURE IT WAS O.K. DEALER MAINTAINED ISSUE NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN AND RETURNED THE CAR TO US. THE CAR OVER THE NEXT MONTH AND ONE-HALF CONTINUED TO OVERHEAT SEVERAL TIMES AND REQUIRE ADDING OF ANTIFREEZE WITH NO APPARENT LEAK UNDER THE VEHICLE. 2-MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE VEHICLE CEASED TO START AND WHEN TOWED TO LANDROVER WAS TOLD IT WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE AND THESE DEFECTS ARE KNOWN ABOUT IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY. TO DATE NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE WARRANTY COMPANY HAS EITHER RETURNED OUR MONEY, VEHICLE OR REPAIRED THE CAR. SOMEONE SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE. SHAME ON LANDROVER AND ANY DEALER THAT DOES NOT RESEARCH THE VEHICLES THEY REPRESENT AS BEING SAFE AND IN GOOD CONDITION TO UNKNOWING CONSUMERS. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-12-21
  • VIN: SALNE22294A
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I PURCHASED MY FREELANDER BRAND NEW IN JULY 2004. AT APPROXIMATELY 45,000 MILES THE ENGINE SUDDENLY OVERHEATED. I TOOK IT THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY. THEY SAID THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE ENGINE BLOCK AND THAT THIS PARTICULAR MODEL LEAKS OIL INTO THE HEAD GASKET CAUSING THE ENGINE TO FAIL. THEY REPLACED MY ENTIRE ENGINE UNDER THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY AT NO CHARGE. THIS WAS JULY 2007. NOW I'M AT 75,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE (ONLY 30,000 MILES ON THIS ENGINE) AND THE DEALERSHIP'S SHOP SAYS TO "GET RIDE OF IT"...I WILL NEED A NEW ENGINE BECAUSE IT IS LEAKING OIL ONTO THE HEAD GASKET. I CANNOT AFFORD TO PURCHASE A NEW ENGINE FOR MY CAR AND CAN'T IN GOOD CONSCIENCE SELL THE VEHICLE TO SOMEONE ELSE...THIS PUTS ME IN TERRIBLE DILEMMA AND ONE WHICH I FEEL THE MANUFACTURER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURERS DISTRICT OFFICE LAST WEEK AND AM STILL WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. I AM ALSO TRYING TO FIND LEGAL HELP IN THIS SITUATION. ALSO, THERE HAS BEEN ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH A "CACKLING" NOISE IN THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WELL. I'VE ADDRESSED IT MANY TIMES WITH THE DEALERSHIP. THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT BUT IT STILL MAKES NOISE. THEY SAID ITS A BUSING PART (I BELIEVE). *TR

NO WARNING ENGINE LIGHT HAD GONE ON. I HAD IT TOWED TO MECHANIC. ENGINE IS TOTALLY SHOT. I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY FOR NEW ONE. I HAVE JUST RECENTLY READ SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS TYPE OF CAR , AND NEVER KNEW THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS WITH THESE CARS UNTIL RECENTLY. SOMEONE NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE. THESE CARS ARE DEFECTIVE, AND HAVE ALL THE SIMILAR PROBLEMS THAT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER LEAD TO ENGINE FAILURE. MY ENGINE APPARENTLY WENT DUE TO MY TIMING BELT TEETH SHEARING OFF, CAUSING TIMING BELT TO SLIP, AND CAMSHAFTS NOT ROTATING, AND ENGINE BEING MANGLED. THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGN OF THIS GRAND FATALITY, AND HAD JUST HAD COOLANT PROBLEM FIXED AS WELL AS SERVICED (OIL & FILTER CHANGE) WITHIN MONTHS OF INCIDENT. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-07-03
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: MY FREELANDER STARTED LOSING COOLANT LAST WEEKEND. I CALLED LAND ROVER SERVICE IN WAUKESHA WI. THEY TOOK THE VEHICLE IN ON MONDAY. THEY TOLD ME THE THERMOSTAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED (A $56 PART) AND A FEW HOSES/PIPES AND GASKETS FOR $900. THE NEXT DAY THEY CALLED TO TELL ME THAT THE MANIFEST INTAKE ALSO NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, ANOTHER $1215.00. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT WAS THE REASON MY CAR MAKES A LOUD TICKING NOISE. I TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING THAT NOISE THE FIRST YEAR I PURCHASED IT - NEW. I TOLD HIM I HAD IT IN 3 TIMES AND COMPLAINED ABOUT IT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTY. I GOT THE SAME ANSWER EVERY TIME 'THEY ALL SOUND LIKE THAT, IT IS NORMAL.' I HAD ANOTHER MECHANIC LOOK AT IT, HE SAID IT WAS NOT NORMAL AND TOLD ME TO TAKE IT BACK IN. I DID, THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. HE TOLD ME THAT THEY COULDN'T MOVE ANY FURTHER ON MY VEHICLE UNTIL I TALKED TO LAND ROVER DIRECTLY. MY HUSBAND CALLED AND OPENED THE CASE. WE ARE NOW ON DAY 4 AND STILL DON'T KNOW IF LAND ROVER IS GOING TO COVER ANYTHING. THEY HAVE TERRIBLE SERVICE. WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE I WAS GIVEN A PROMISE OF SUPERIOR SERVICE AND LOYALTY. NOW, THEY WON'T EVEN GIVE ME A LOANER. *TR

Negative 2004 Land rover Freelander car reviews

If you are considering purchasing a Freelander, it is important to be aware of the potential issues that have been reported by some owners. While my personal experience with the vehicle was not positive, it is important to note that every vehicle is different and may have different maintenance needs. It is recommended that you thoroughly research and inspect any vehicle before making a purchase to ensure that it meets your needs and expectations.

  2. Timmothy Altenwerth 2024-07-06

I purchased this car two years ago and have experienced similar issues, which I have addressed with the dealership on 10 occasions.

  3. Myron Murphy 2024-05-07

It sounds like you've had a tough time with your SUV. Have you considered looking into a Toyota? They have a reputation for being reliable and long-lasting. It might be worth exploring your options. Let me know if you need any help!

  4. David Lang 2024-03-20

I can see that you have had some issues with your car, but it's great to hear that your dealer has taken care of everything. It might be a good idea to consider trading it in before the warranty expires.

  5. Jarvis Pfannerstill 2024-01-09

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you've had a generally positive experience with your Freelander over the past 4 years. Although there was an early-life electrical issue that required a tow to the dealership, I'm happy to hear that it was fixed and that you haven't had any other problems since. It sounds like the car has handled the dirt roads in Michigan very well, and that the performance, ride, and handling are all quite good. While the interior noise level is higher than you would like, it's great to hear that overall you're pleased with your ownership experience!

Positive 2004 Land rover Freelander car reviews

  1. Emmitt Hackett 2024-11-05

We absolutely love it! Don't be fooled by its size - there's so much room inside (even I, at 6'2

  2. Bertram Quigley 2024-11-05

The Freelander has been our daily driver on pavement, with only a few off-road trips. It's comfortable on long trips, delivers gas mileage in the low 20's mpg, and is fun to drive. We find it distinctive and confidence-inspiring on wet and icy roads here in the mountains of Eastern KY. It handles great and is easy to park. We've had no reliability issues, and the dealer experience has been outstanding. They even organized an off-road trip in West Virginia and treated us to a free restaurant meal! It's a shame that Land Rover has (for now) discontinued the Freelander in the USA, which gives me something of an 'orphan' feel - kinda like how I feel about my old MG.

  3. Jamel Prosacco 2024-11-03

Overall, the new 2004 Land Rover Freelander looks a lot better than its previous models. It has taken on the Ford Motor Company look and has been polished up from the 2002-2003 models. In addition to the improved look, the price has changed, which was long overdue.

  4. Schuyler O'Reilly 2024-09-04

This car is a fantastic purchase! It's definitely worth considering if you're buying a first car for a teenager in high school or heading off to college. The SUV has all the great features you'd expect, with the added luxury appeal of a Land Rover. The SE3 model is a surefire winner, and with its removable back, the car feels more like a Jeep than an SUV. Overall, it's a great choice!

  5. Freddie Murazik 2024-09-02

This is my 2nd SUV and I am really pleased with it. It's easy to drive and handles well on the highway and off-road. The steering is perfect and I've had no problems driving it in very bad weather conditions such as snow and rain. If you're looking for a car that you can take shopping or off-roading, I highly recommend it. I call my Freelander my 'baby Range Rover'.
