2007 Suzuki Sx4 problems

suzuki logo

The Suzuki SX4 is a subcompact car and crossover produced by Japanese automaker Suzuki since 2006. A successor of the Aerio tall hatchback and sedan, the first-generation model was available as a hatchback and sedan, with the former available in both front- and four-wheel drive and as a rebadged version in Europe called the Fiat Sedici.

In 2013, the second generation was launched, called Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (or Suzuki S-Cross in India)— now exclusively a subcompact crossover SUV. The first- and second-generation SX4s sold alongside one another until 2014. The SX4 sedan was replaced with the Suzuki Ciaz. The third-generation model was introduced in 2021 as a heavily modified version of the previous model and was only produced in Hungary for the European market. For the Indian market, the S-Cross was replaced by the taller Grand Vitara.

The SX4 is an abbreviation of "Sports X-over 4 Seasons". The SX4 designation was previously used by American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the 1981 through 1983 model years for a sporty liftback model in its line of all-wheel-drive AMC Eagle passenger cars. While the "S-Cross" suffix is an abbreviation of Smart Crossover.

Common 2007 Suzuki Sx4 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2007 Suzuki SX4, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Transmission Failure:
    • Owners have reported unusual noises, issues with acceleration, and improper shifting in the transmission. This problem can lead to costly repairs, with some cases requiring transmission replacement.
  2. Leaking Rear Axle Seals:
    • Some owners experienced leaking rear axle seals around 80,000 miles. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty seals, which typically cost between $10 and $15.
  3. Sticking Accelerator Pedal:
    • Carbon buildup on the throttle shaft can cause the accelerator pedal to stick. Using a throttle body cleaner may remove the special coating on the shaft, necessitating throttle body replacement to address this issue.
  4. 5th Gear Malfunction:
    • Owners have reported instances where the 5th gear malfunctions, leading to issues like the transmission shifting to neutral despite being in gear. This problem can be attributed to a faulty 5th gear synchronizer and may require costly repairs.
  5. Air Bag Sensor Light Issues:
    • Malfunctioning air bag sensors have been a concern for some 2007 Suzuki SX4 owners. Faulty sensors can trigger the air bag sensor light intermittently, potentially affecting the proper deployment of airbags in emergencies.

These problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise with the 2007 Suzuki SX4. Addressing these common problems promptly can help owners avoid more significant repair costs and ensure the continued reliability of their vehicles.

What is the problem with the 2007 Suzuki SX4?

The 1st generation SX4 (2007—2013) has 23 owner complaints, mostly about airbags & seat belts problems. Overall it ranks 7th in reliability out of 14 eligible Suzuki generations.

Are Suzuki SX4 cars reliable?

Is a used Suzuki SX4 S-Cross hatchback reliable? The SX4 S-Cross placed ninth out of 25 cars in the small SUV category of our 2022 What Car? Reliability Survey. Suzuki as a brand, on the other hand, ranked fifth out of 32 manufacturers, which is really impressive.

What year is the bad Suzuki SX4?

Summary: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, over time, the OCS sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail due to repeated flexing of the mat from use of the seat.

Why SX4 failed?

Let me summarize this: Stiff competition from rivals meant low sales for the SX4. Thirsty petrol engine, lack of features, less cabin space as compared to the City. The new Ciaz would be a modern car and would erase all shortcomings found in the SX4.

THIS IS BECAUSE THE NARROW WIDTH OF THE FRONT WINDSHIELD AND THE WIDE REINFORCEMENT BETWEEN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR, THE SMALL SIDE WINDOW AND THE WINDSHIELD. HAD TO LEAN FORWARD WHILE REDUCING THE SPEED IN ORDER NOT TO HIT INCOMING TRAFFIC. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-03-23
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • Crash: 1
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: VEHICLE PURCHASED NEW ON 10/30/2007, AND SERVICED REGULARLY AT LOCAL DEALER. INITIAL REPORTS OF "PASSENGER AIR BAG" LIGHT IGNORED REPEATEDLY BY DEALER. ON 3/23/2008 WHILE VEHICLE WAS MOVING IT WAS BACKED INTO BY A TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CAMRY HAD MINIMAL DAMAGE, BUT THE SUZUKI SUSTAINED MORE THAN $4700 IN DAMAGE. NUMEROUS CALLS TO POLICE ENSUE AND FINALLY AFTER 2 HOURS, A FLORIDA HWY. PATROL OFFICER RESPONDS. HE REFUSED TO MAKE/TAKE A REPORT AS HIS SHIFT IS ABOUT TO END. HE HAD A VERY DEMEANING ATTITUDE AND WAS QUITE AGITATED. WHILE INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED, NO ONE KNEW THE EXTENT OF THEM AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. NONE OF THE 7 AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. THE CAR ITSELF WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED AND ALMOST TIPPED COMPLETELY OVER ONTO ITS ROOF. THE PASSENGER LATER LEARNED THAT THE REASON FOR HER SEVERE PAIN AND INABILITY TO WALK 3 WEEKS AFTER THE ACCIDENT WAS DUE TO A SEVERED HIP JOINT. OF COURSE THE CAMRY DRIVER'S GEICO INSURANCE HANDLED THE INITIAL CLAIM AND REPAIRED THE SUZUKI. THEY BALKED AT THE INJURIES, BUT AFTER RETAINING COUNSEL FINALLY PAID OUT A SMALL PORTION ON THE MEDICAL; THE PASSENGER HAS PERMANENT LIFE LONG PROBLEMS AS A RESULT, LOST HER JOB AND HAS A LARGE PARTIALLY UNPAID MEDICAL BILL. THE VEHICLE WAS "OKAY" AFTER THE REPAIR AND THEN AT 51310 MILES THE "AIR BAG" LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. REPORTS TO NHTSA AND SUZUKI WENT COMPLETELY IGNORED SINCE THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH SUZUKI'S SOLD. SUZUKI ADVISED OWNER TO CONTINUE MAKING CAR PAYMENTS, INSURANCE PREMIUMS ETC., BUT DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE AS THEY WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR INJURIES NOW THAT THEY WERE AWARE. WHAT A COMPLETE JOKE! OWNER HAD TO SELL CAR AS TRANSPORTATION WAS NEEDED; WHY MAKE PAYMENTS ON SOMETHING YOU CAN'T DRIVE. GM OWNED THE SUZUKI DIVISION AT THE TIME AND HAVE SINCE CLOSED THE SUZUKI DIVISION. THEY AGAIN GOT OFF WHILE OTHERS SUFFER FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES! *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-02-06
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: AS OTHERS HAVE RELATED THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT(S) HAS APPEARED ON MY CAR ALSO NOW. AS OTHERS HAVE WRITTEN THEIRS WAS MAINLY THE DRIVER SEAT SENSORS FAILING. THE MINOR DIFFERENCE OF MY ISSUE IS THAT BOTH SEATS AIR BAG WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND WILL NOT GO AWAY AT THE SAME TIME. THIS FACT DOES ADD UP TO THE SENSORS IN EACH SEAT FAILING AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME. SUZUKI REPAIR DEPARTMENTS ARE CLAIMING INDIVIDUAL SEAT SENSOR ISSUES. SOMETHING ELSE IS WRONG HERE AND THIS SHOULD BECOME A DEFECT INVESTIGATION BEFORE SOMEONE DIES DUE TO THE AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING. *TR

THE CONTACT HAD BEEN DEALING WITH THE FAILURE FOR FOUR YEARS AND HAD NOT BEEN OFFERED AN ADEQUATE REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER SENT A GOOD FAITH EXTENSION LETTER TO THE CONTACT THAT STATED THAT THE SENSOR COULD BE REPAIRED FOR UP 10 YEARS OR 120,000 MILES. 2007 Suzuki Sx4 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2007 Suzuki Sx4.

2013-09-06
  • Manufacturer: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. As a result, during a crash necessitating deployment, the air bag will deploy regardless of whether the front seat occupant is an adult or a child.
  • Consequence: Air bag deployment with a child in the front passenger side seat increases the risk of injury to that child.
  • Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners and dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion assembly (which includes the OCS sensor mat) free of charge. Sufficient quantities of parts are not currently available to fix all of the affected vehicles. Owners will be notified of the recall in October 2013 and will receive a second notification when parts are available to have their vehicle repaired. The recall began on May 23, 2014. Owners may contact Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934. Suzuki's recall campaign number is VD.

Negative 2007 Suzuki Sx4 car reviews

  1. Cole Hodkiewicz 2024-07-07

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with the car I recently purchased. While it has some great reviews, I have noticed that it may not be the same car that others have described. While it performs well in the city, I have found that joining highway traffic can be a bit of a challenge. The acceleration from 45 to 60 mph is quite slow, which can be a bit nerve-wracking. Additionally, the gas mileage is around 23 mpg and the ride is not as smooth as I had hoped. However, I do appreciate the car's unique character and style. I would recommend taking it for a test drive before making a purchase. Thank you for your time!

  2. Eladio Schuppe 2024-06-02

Hello! My wife and I purchased two SX-4s in December 2006. Initially, we liked the cars, but after a few months, we noticed that they were consuming more gas than the seller had told us. However, we managed to deal with it by slowing down our speed to stay below 9 liters/100km. We have now had the cars for a little over two and a half years. Unfortunately, last week, at 72K km, my wife's car's alternator jammed, and it was not covered by warranty anymore, so we had to pay to have it changed. Then, just 10 days later, at 78K km, my car's alternator jammed too! We thought this was abnormal, so we contacted the dealership, but they told us they couldn't do anything. We then reached out to Suzuki Canada, and they told us the same thing. We hope this information helps you make an informed decision. Thank you for considering our experience!

  3. Marty Cartwright 2024-05-13

My wife bought this car in 09. At first she liked it very much. Mileage is not great around 25 on the highway. We took a couple longs trips and that's when you notice how small it is inside. Through town or back and forthe to work is ok. Around the 70k mark the trans mission went out and we had it replaced under warranty. We at about 85k the trans went out again. So we dicided to get ride of it before anything else went wrong. Suzuki told us this was very unusual and worked with us through all of it.We might purchase another one but not sure.

  4. Jedidiah Sawayn 2024-04-16

I bought the SX4 for my wife as a Christmas present in 2006. The colours were beautiful and it had a manual transmission (her favourite). Unfortunately, we have had some issues with the car, including engine failure at 30,000 miles, a failed airbag module ($1800), and numerous check engine lights. Recently, we discovered that the catalytic converter is also faulty, which can be expensive to replace. It's important to note that the emissions warranty runs out at 80,000 miles, so it's worth keeping an eye on this. The dealer-installed cost of the new catalytic converter is just over $900.00, but if you're a DIY enthusiast, you can get it at the dealer for about $500.00.

  2. Cale O'Hara 2024-11-25

I spent a lot of time researching for the perfect vehicle, and after waiting for quite a few years, I finally found it! I was looking for a small SUV that had ample interior space, was comfortable, had a small engine with adequate power, a nice ride, good looks, and offered 2WD, AWD, and 4WD (which mine has all three, and I don't see anyone really talking much about it - I have one of the first built, do they all still have this feature?). I have never been stuck, and have had no mechanical problems. The mileage is decent for a vehicle that does so much. It was a well thought out and well-engineered product. I have even heard that it can tow 2k lbs, and they make body hitches for it. In fact, it is actually listed as 2400 lbs in some sites. Has anyone tried it yet? Maybe for short trips.

  3. Karl Gleichner 2024-11-17

This is a great car! I've owned it for 21 months and I'm so happy with it. While it's not the best on hills, overall it's a good car. Plus, it requires almost no maintenance, which is fantastic. My car averages 24.4 miles per gallon, and it's very roomy for people of all sizes. Getting in and out of the car is a breeze, and having AWD is a real plus when the weather is bad. I'm really pleased with it!

I recently traded in my '04 Explorer Sportrac for this car and I'm already in love with it! Everything about it is great so far. I'm especially happy that I waited for the Sport model because the keyless entry/start is absolutely awesome. The auto climate control works great too. On my first tank, I got 25 mpg with a 50/50 city hwy split. I highly recommend buying this car now!

Congratulations on your new SX4! It sounds like you made an excellent choice. The design, features, and build quality are truly impressive, especially considering the affordable price of $15,999. During your test drive, it must have been a pleasant surprise to find that the vehicle accelerated nicely to highway speeds, even with four full-grown adults on board. The leg-room and head-room are also noteworthy, as passengers up to six feet tall can sit comfortably in both the front and back seats. Additionally, the rear doors make it easy to access the back seat, which is perfect for families with children's car seats. It's great to hear that the SX4 doesn't require a timing belt, which will save you money on maintenance costs and eliminate the worry of a ticking time-bomb scenario. Enjoy your new ride!
