2021 Hyundai Kona problems
The Hyundai Kona (Korean: 현대 코나) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. The first-generation Kona debuted in June 2017 and the production version was revealed later that year. It is positioned between the Venue or Bayon and the Tucson in Hyundai crossover SUV line-up. The battery electric version called the Kona Electric (or Kona EV) was first launched in South Korea during the first half of 2018 and rolled out gradually worldwide afterwards.
Naming
The Kona is named after the western district of the island of Hawaiʻi. The company stated the name "reflects the lifestyle of modern customers", in line with its "progressive design" that it adopts. The Kona naming also continues Hyundai's tradition of naming crossover SUV models after famous travel destinations, including the Creta, Santa Fe, Tucson and Veracruz.
The vehicle is marketed in Portugal as the Hyundai Kauai, as Kona is too similar to cona, a slang word for the female genitalia in European Portuguese. It's also sold in Iceland where the word kona means woman in Icelandic. Like Kona, Kauai is a place in Hawaii. It is also Hawaiian for lady.
In China, the vehicle was sold as the Hyundai Encino.

Common 2021 Hyundai Kona problems
The 2021 Hyundai Kona has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues include engine oil issues, A/C system failures, and broken headlights.
Engine oil issues are the most widespread complaint, affecting many vehicles within the first 15,000 miles. Owners have reported that the engines burn oil and coolant, leading to excessive wear and tear on the components in the motor. Hyundai is replacing affected engines for free under warranty, but out-of-warranty replacement costs can exceed $5,000.
A/C system failures have also been reported on the 2021 Kona, with compressor issues appearing in vehicles with less than 10,000 miles. Hyundai is replacing many compressors for free under warranty, but out-of-warranty replacement costs are approximately $1,500.
Broken headlights are another problem found on the Hyundai Kona, occurring in vehicles within the first 25,000 miles. Owners have reported condensation and water inside the headlight housing, which can short out the lights due to failed seals that allow water in. Replacing the headlight assembly and electronics costs over $700 per light.
The 2021 Hyundai Kona has one recall, similar to other small SUVs from the same year, covering improperly heat-treated piston oil rings. This defect can lead to leaks and increase the risk of a fire. Hyundai will replace the engine for free on affected models.
A well-maintained 2021 Hyundai Kona may last around 150,000 miles, but engine problems make owning a Kona out of warranty less recommended. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $535 per year.
The 2021 Hyundai Kona comes with two engine options: a base 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that produces 147 horsepower and a more powerful 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that generates 175 horsepower. The base engine comes with a six-speed automatic transmission and achieves up to 30 MPG. The 1.6L turbocharged engine also delivers 30 MPG and allows for quick acceleration, taking 6.6 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.
Is 2021 Hyundai Kona a reliable car?
How Reliable Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona? The 2021 Hyundai Kona has a predicted reliability score of 82 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

The Kona N was subject to the DCT recall for improper software going into limp mode during certain oil pump conditions. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-24
- VIN: KM8K2CAA8MU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I bought this car for my daughter we bought used low miles in May 2023. She got her first oil change in August 2023, in November on her way back to college her car seized up and stop working on the highway. Dealership said missing oil plug. Had to replace with new engine. Insurance company drops us, and new insurance is double. Second oil change July 2024. I noticed oil spots on my new driveway, she takes to dealer, again oil plug gone and hole in oil pan. This is crazy!! If I wouldn't have seen the oil spots on driveway she would have blown up anothe engine. She parks on gravel lot, can't see oil drips. Internet full of these stories. I can't afford this car. Thousands of dollars in increased insurance, driveway repair, car repair, not to mentoin the anxiety. This car has doubled insurance rates, ruined two paver driveways, and over $1000 each time in repairs. This needs to be fixed. This is dangerous. I spoke to dealership and there only advice was to bring to dealership for oil changes. This company needs to recall this defect with the oil plug/pan

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-12
- VIN: KM8K12AA0MU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The braking system malfunctioned. Son was driving it, brake light came on, brakes started sinking randomly. Vehicle is very slow to get vehicle to stop and had to hit brake pedal hard to even get vehicle to slow down. Opened the hood to verify if there was brake fluid, it was low. Put brake fluid in and tested brakes, a pinhole was spraying brake fluid. Took to get a diagnostic of the vehicle. In addition to the pinhole leak, diagnostics showed that where the brake lines attach there is a leak at two of the components/areas, and told the vehicle would need new brake lines. We did not repair it at the place that performed the diagnostic. We are towing it to a Hyundai Dealership for inspection this week 3/21/2024. We have spoken to Corporate and were given a case number. No other inspections have taken place. Brake warning light came on last week. Malfunctioning brakes are a safety risk for everyone.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-17
- VIN: KM8K6CAA6MU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: My 2021 Hyundai Kona AWD will not operate. It only has 18,000 miles on it and I bought it new. I had the oil changed at 7,000 miles. The dealership made me wait a month to take a look at it, and I believe that they know there is an issue with this model so they are trying to stall. I plan to request a buyback. The last time I tried to drive it, it died every time the car came to a brake. I had to sit with my emergency lights flashing for a few minutes to get it to start again, only to have it die at the next light. This is very dangerous.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- VIN: KM8K22AA7MU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My vehicle was purchased in late June 2023 with Remainder of Hyundai Factory Warranty promised. A few months ago I started hearing a ticking noise from the motor and on 3 different occasions almost stalled while stopped at a traffic light. I took it to CMA's Hyundai of Lynchburg and upon inspection was told I need a new motor due to finding possible aluminum on the piston head of cylinder 4. There was a previous recall on 2021 Hyundai KONA Motors due to faulty piston rings. I am wondering if the defect in my motor may be related. I was told I could not leave/drive my vehicle for my own safety. So my vehicle has been at the dealership since mid-December, 2023. They state the warranty is void.

POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-27
- VIN: KM8K6CAA7MU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The 2021 Kona SEL PLUS AT AWD suddenly changed into the manual low gear and abruptly stalled in traffic. The Kona was stopped at a traffic light. When the traffic light turned green and the car was driven, the Kona's transmission seemed to switch into the manual low gear creating a high RPM. After it crossed the intersection, the Kona stalled and stopped abruptly in traffic. Shortly thereafter, the car was restarted and it went back to driving normally. The Kona was taken to the dealership but they could not find any code. So they say without a code, they can not do anything. This is a serious safety problem. I have a video of the incident. I have contacted HyundaiUSA and they will not do anything without a code.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-13
- VIN: KM8K12AA1MU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 9/13/2022 I took my vehicle in to the dealer stating the vehicle felt like it was going to stall. I was told there was no code found so they couldn't do anything, passed off as nothing wrong. On 4/1/2023 the vehicle stalled while pulling into a parking lot and a car behind me had to honk because it was going to hit me. I took the vehicle to dealer, they kept it two days, I was told it could not be created, no code found. 7/30/2023 the vehicle stalled on me four times, again I left it at the dealer for two days, vehicle was down 3 qts of oil. Oil consumption test started. During all this I had two open cases with Hyundai corporate. One was closed without my knowledge and the second my case was denied for any kind of help, no engine replacement or vehicle repurchase options provided to me. I was told I could open a case with the BBB which I currently have. I am waiting to hear what is happening with that currently. The vehicle continues to run extremely rough and sluggish, everytime I brake or slow down, I'm afraid it's going to stall. One time previously it did stall on me while driving on an overpass of a business street and I was afraid someone was going to hit me from behind. It's hard to drive a vehicle that everytime to put your foot on the brake or slow down you are afraid it's going to stall and someone is going to hit you from behind. That is a safety risk. When the vehicle has stalled it has been at different speeds, in different instances, like I said, slowing down, braking, pulling in to a parking lot and just driving straight.
STEERING,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-27
- VIN: KM8K53A50MU
- Components: STEERING,ENGINE
- Summary: At a stop sign, or red light, car bucks, then accelerates. Steering column is making noise. Took car to dealership..stated they can't look at my car until October 31st, 2023! My car only has 16k miles. If this is a dangerous issue, especially the steering colum noise (possibly a bearing issue or rack and pinion problem)..why am I having to wait until October??
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-05
- VIN: KM8K5CA50MU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When slowing down to a stop and im not completely stopped and then step on the gas the vehicle makes a winding noise and has no transmission engagement for several seconds so if im in s turning lane or even going forward when a street light turn green, there's been dozens of times where this happened and i need to let off the gas pedal slowing me down while e everyone else is gaining speed making them to jam on their breaks. I let the dealership know and their answer was just come to a complete stop, i was like during a green light? The other thing everyday I drive it the blind spot warning lights keep turning on even when theres no one around me and now i had the low tire pressure light turning on then off when the tires are completely inflated
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-15
- VIN: KM8K5CA55MU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: * The 7 speed DCT transmission (automatic) jerks and down shifts hard and lunges forward when braking and coming to a stop. Upon acceleration the transmission also is jerky in first gear. It's like driving a manual transmission for the first time. * If not properly controlled by braking, I could hit the car in front of me. * I have had the vehicle in twice to the Hyundai dealership, but they say the judder not bad enough to replace the transmission. They also did a software update that did not change anything. There is a Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin #22-AT-007H * There were no warning lights or messages to indicate the problem. The vehicle currently has 35,200 miles. I noticed the bad shifting at about 12,000 miles and it has gotten worse.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-16
- VIN: KM8K2CAA6MU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased the vehicle on 6/29/23, mileage at purchase was 38,126. Per CarFax ,this vehicle had an oil change at 38,026 miles (at Turnersville Hyundai). I drove this vehicle to Maryland and while there it had stalled 3 times, each time when I was going very slow. I came home to find out that in under 1,000 miles of driving since the last listed oil change, I had burned 2 quarts of oil. Took car back to Turnersville Hyundai where they kept if for 4 days and said they were doing an Oil Consumption Test and Hyundai was notified. There is no way two quarts of oil should burn up while driving under 1,000 miles.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-30
- VIN: KM8K2CAA7MU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: the bcw tends to go on every time the vehicle is driven on a rural two way road to town, approx. less than 20 miles. been to dealership for the problem with the bcw ,paid for diagnostic and scanned for codes ,none apparent.the dealership did minimal calibration without realalinig the sensor. the vehicle will automatically downshift causing the vehicle lurch which is totally unsafe.this began at 6000 miles.no obstructions to sensors as per dealer inspection.a brand new suv awd never been offroad ,or any collision whatsoever.reading forums leads me to believe it occures quite often to this particular vehicle.i called the local global representative and have a case number of 21601680, i thank you for your prompt response to this issue.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-09
- VIN: KM8K2CAA9MU

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-18
- VIN: KM8K6CAA6MU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: My car has approximately 14,000 miles on it and was purchased brand new. It still has 1,000 miles to go before the next servicing. Saturday I when driving approximately 40 miles an hour, the engine suddenly cut off and the car stopped in the middle of the road. I was able to start the car and drive for approximately 15 minutes before it slowed to 3mph and shut off again. I called the dealership where I purchased it and explained what happened. Initially they said they had not serviced the car in a year. I let the car sit for a day then checked all the fluids. The coolant level was fine and so was the oil. Monday, it cut off twice on my way to work. I drove to the nearest dealership and left it there. I had to rent a car as no loaners are available. It has been at the dealership for 5 days. They thought they fixed but when they test drove it, the car cut out again. Later that day, I received an email from Hyundai Blue link with an Automatic DTC Notification that a possible condition has been detected with my Engine Control System.

I really enjoyed the Prius and owned two of them. However, when I went to get another Toyota, I found that the new model had been increased in length by 8 inches, which was not suitable for my tight garage. I decided to look around and discovered the KONA SEL. It's a fun car to drive, the perfect size, and looks great. I've had it for 10 months now and I absolutely love it. It's a great car at a reasonable price.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you were able to secure a great lease deal for the AWD Kona Ultimate! It's wonderful to hear that you're enjoying all of the amenities that come with it.
-
I should have looked into it more because it does not tow anything. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of small trailer are you looking to buy?
-
Amazing!
-
I'm so glad I managed to get this vehicle at such an unbeatable price!

I noticed that the position of the seat and the brake pedal made it necessary for me to hover my foot above it in order to press down, instead of putting my heel to the ground and pressing with the top of my foot like most cars. This made me feel a bit uncomfortable while driving.

Brendon Franecki 2024-07-05
I chose this car from a rental lot and kept it for a week because it looked appealing, with all the bells and whistles for a compact SUV. Unfortunately, my experience with the car was not great. The engine was weak and struggled to maintain speed in cruise control mode, especially on hills. Additionally, the acceleration was slow. I rented this car to find a potential replacement for my 2009 Toyota Yaris with a stick shift, but unfortunately, the Kona (1.6L) did not meet my expectations. It's safe to say that this Hyundai car will not be my future car.
Hyman McKenzie 2024-07-01
Our car's fuel efficiency is not meeting the promised 30 MPG and is actually lower than our trade-in. This issue needs to be addressed.
Jordy Anderson 2024-05-15
I appreciated the attractive appearance and affordability of the product. However, I was disappointed by the unexpected engine failure.
