2012 Suzuki Sx4 problems
The Suzuki SX4 is a subcompact car and crossover produced by Japanese automaker Suzuki since 2006. A successor of the Aerio tall hatchback and sedan, the first-generation model was available as a hatchback and sedan, with the former available in both front- and four-wheel drive and as a rebadged version in Europe called the Fiat Sedici.
In 2013, the second generation was launched, called Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (or Suzuki S-Cross in India)— now exclusively a subcompact crossover SUV. The first- and second-generation SX4s sold alongside one another until 2014. The SX4 sedan was replaced with the Suzuki Ciaz. The third-generation model was introduced in 2021 as a heavily modified version of the previous model and was only produced in Hungary for the European market. For the Indian market, the S-Cross was replaced by the taller Grand Vitara.
The SX4 is an abbreviation of "Sports X-over 4 Seasons". The SX4 designation was previously used by American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the 1981 through 1983 model years for a sporty liftback model in its line of all-wheel-drive AMC Eagle passenger cars. While the "S-Cross" suffix is an abbreviation of Smart Crossover.

Common 2012 Suzuki Sx4 problems
The Suzuki SX4, produced between 2007 and 2013, is known for its unique design and versatility, with both hatchback and sedan versions available
. While the SX4 has been praised for its affordability and standard features, it has also been criticized for certain common problems that may arise as the vehicle accumulates mileage.
- Transmission failure: Some Suzuki SX4 owners have reported transmission failure, although there are few complaints listed for the 2013 model. Transmission issues can lead to a significant decrease in the vehicle's speed and acceleration capabilities, making it essential to address these problems as soon as they arise.
- Leaking rear axle: Leaking rear axles have been reported in some Suzuki SX4 units, which can lead to a loss of fluid and potential damage to the vehicle's drivetrain. Regular maintenance and inspection of the rear axle can help prevent this issue.
- Cracked engine block: One owner reported a cracked engine block in their 2008 Suzuki SX4 at approximately 97,800 miles. Engine-related problems can be costly to repair, so it is crucial to address these issues promptly and seek professional assistance when needed.
- Excessive fuel consumption: Some Suzuki SX4 owners have reported excessive fuel consumption, particularly in the 2009 model. This issue can lead to increased operating costs and negatively impact the vehicle's overall efficiency.
- Power steering pump failure: Suzuki has acknowledged that power steering pump failures can occur, particularly in cold weather conditions or when the steering wheel is turned at low speeds. This issue can affect the vehicle's handling and safety, making it essential to address any power steering-related problems promptly.
- Transmission fluid temperature increase: Suzuki has reported that stress cracks caused by heat can lead to increased transmission fluid temperatures, potentially causing solenoids to increase hydraulic pressure and damage the transmission. Regular maintenance and inspection of the transmission can help prevent this issue.
- Poor protection of the generator: The generator in the Suzuki SX4 is poorly protected from moisture and dirt, which can lead to unpredictable lifespan and corrosion . Regular inspection and maintenance of the generator can help ensure its longevity and prevent potential issues.
- Tapping of the steering rack: A common extraneous sound in the Suzuki SX4 is the tapping of the steering rack on bumps, which is a design feature and does not progress . While this issue is not necessarily a cause for concern, it can be an annoyance for some drivers.
By being aware of these common problems, potential Suzuki SX4 buyers can make informed decisions and take necessary precautions to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles. Regular maintenance and inspection, as well as prompt addressing of any issues that arise, can help ensure a positive ownership experience.
Are Suzuki SX4 cars reliable?
Is a used Suzuki SX4 S-Cross hatchback reliable? The SX4 S-Cross placed ninth out of 25 cars in the small SUV category of our 2022 What Car? Reliability Survey. Suzuki as a brand, on the other hand, ranked fifth out of 32 manufacturers, which is really impressive.
What year is the bad Suzuki SX4?
Summary: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, over time, the OCS sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail due to repeated flexing of the mat from use of the seat.
How long does a Suzuki SX4 engine last?
The estimated lifespan of a Suzuki Sx4 is 146,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy. Don't just buy it, VehicleScore it.
Why SX4 failed?
Let me summarize this: Stiff competition from rivals meant low sales for the SX4. Thirsty petrol engine, lack of features, less cabin space as compared to the City. The new Ciaz would be a modern car and would erase all shortcomings found in the SX4.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- VIN: JS2YB5A36C6
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The airbag sensor in the passenger seat failed. There is a known Supplemental Restraint System issue/recall in 2007-2011 Suzuki SX4s, however there has not been a recall for the 2012 model despite this being an issue beyond the aforementioned years. Affected vehicles may develop an electrical circuit disconnection within the front passenger sensing system sensor mat that is built into the front passenger seat bottom cushion. The disconnection is due to repeated flexing of the sensor mat from use of the front passenger seat. If this condition occurs, the “AIR BAG” light in the instrument cluster and, the front passenger’s seat belt reminder light will come on. Also, the “PASS AIR BAG OFF” indicator light will remain off because the front passenger air bag will remain enabled. In a frontal impact of significant magnitude, the front air bag will deploy with full force - even with a child, or small adult, in the front seat. Air bag deployment with a child or small adult in the front passenger seat increases the risk of severe injury or death to that occupant. Replacement front seats are backordered, likely because of the recall in 2007-2011 vehicles, and despite placing an order for a new seat in May 2023, I have been waiting 9 months for a pallet to ship from Suzuki. Given the danger of traveling with a passenger given the vehicle's condition, and the fact that this was a known issue for the 5 prior years of this vehicle, this is an unacceptable amount of time to wait for a replacement part, and this should be investigated as a potential necessary recall for 2012 Suzuki SX4s.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-28
- VIN: JS2YC5A30C6
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I HAD MY CAR REPAIRED IN A RECALL IN JAN 2015 (ITS CODE IS VL). AFTER ABOUT ONE MONTH I FOUND SOMETIMES IT WAS DIFFICULT TO MOVE THE STICK OUT OF PARK. IT WAS A RANDOM ISSUE SO I DIDN'T TAKE IT SERIOUS AT THAT TIME. RECENTLY THE ISSUE HAPPENS MORE FREQUENTLY. I CALLED SUZUKI CUSTOMER SERVICE ON MARCH 28, 2016 AND THEY TOLD ME TO HAVE THE CAR DIAGNOSED AT A LOCAL AUTHORIZED DEALER. I WENT TO THE DEALER ON THE SAME DAY. THE DEALER TOLD ME THE PART THAT WAS REPLACED IN THE RECALL IN JAN 2015 NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN, BUT IT ALREADY PASSED THE WARRANTY WHICH IS ONE YEAR. I CALLED THE SUZUKI CUSTOMER SERVICE AGAIN AND THEY GAVE ME THE SAME ANSWER: THEY WARRANTY ON THAT PART ALREADY EXPIRED. I JUST FIND ON THE NATSA WEBSITE SUZUKI RELEASED A REVISED DOCUMENT (RCORRD-14V811-4872.PDF) ON FEB 18, 2015 SAYING THEY "HAVE RECEIVED REPORTS OF SHIFTING DIFFICULTY IN SOME SX4 VEHICLES AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR HAS BEEN PERFORMED." AND THEY RELEASED A REVISED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (RCRIT-14V811-3386.PDF) ON FEB 27, 2015. MY CAR WAS REPAIRED IN JAN, 2015, AND AFTER THAT I DID NOT RECEVIE ANY NOTICE ABOUT THE REVISED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. I THINK THE CAR ISSUE I AM HAVING IS DUE TO THEY DID NOT FOLLOW THE REVISED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. AND I THINK SUZUKI SHOULD REPAIR IT AT NO CHARGE. THANKS

I bought this car used in 2012 with only 12K on the odometer and gave it to my nephew last year with 122K. It has all-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission. Even after 11 years, it never once failed to start or get me where I needed to go. I only needed to perform routine maintenance on it and never had any engine lights come on. It was great in the snow and not bad on ice. The only downside was that it got a bit cramped during the 215 mile run to St Louis, but that's to be expected. The clearcoat on the hood gave up when the car was around 6 years old, but that's just a minor issue. Although Suzuki parts are becoming harder to find, this car greatly exceeded my expectations overall. The only other minor issues were that the CVT is theoretically a weak link, but I serviced it regularly, and the AC needed recharging every couple of years.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2012 sedan that I purchased back in 2014 from a car rental. It had around 30,000 miles on it at the time, and now in 2021 with over 100k miles, I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems with it! This year, I did have to replace the battery and brakes, but overall it's been a great value for the money. It's a shame that Suzuki is no longer available in the USA. Thanks for reading!

This is definitely the best car I have ever owned (and I have owned quite a few). It drives great, has good power for a small car, is very comfortable, and the all-wheel drive is AWESOME - this car performs exceptionally well in the snow. My only complaint is that the cargo area is a little small, but other than that, it's an excellent car!
-
The interior is really spacious and it's a breeze to drive and park, even in challenging weather and on hills.

This is my wife's new car and she absolutely loves it! She decided to trade in her pickup due to heavy driving and she couldn't be happier with her choice. The car drives very well and has great acceleration. The built-in GPS is a genius feature that saves you from having to buy an expensive radio. So far, my wife is thrilled with her new car. We were originally looking for an SUV or minivan, but when she saw this one, she said, 'this one's cute.' The price was also very reasonable for a new car and the dealer was extremely positive and helpful. We were even pleasantly surprised with a $300 gas card! If you're in the market for a nice small vehicle, definitely check it out. However, it's worth noting that the driving position may not be comfortable for taller drivers.

The car had some issues from the beginning, such as the CVT overheating and going into 2wd survival mode, and the brakes dragging. However, these were addressed by getting new disk brakes all around. After two years, the bearings started getting noisy, but they were replaced along with the brake shoes. The transmission also became noisy and the alternator had to be replaced three times. Unfortunately, the cowling directing ram air through the radiator into the throttle body became detached and overheated, but it was reconnected with duct tape. The alternator's location next to the front wheel made it vulnerable to street debris, and when the cowling became disconnected, the engine combined with the hot running transmission fried many electrical wires. Despite these issues, the car lasted for eleven years.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. In my opinion, it might be worth considering investing a bit more in a higher quality car. Personally, I've had some issues with this car, including needing to replace the brakes multiple times, the inner tie-rod, water pump, rear wheel assembly, 2 Catalytic Converters, and an O2 sensor. Additionally, I've never gotten better than 25 mpg. Just thought I'd share my thoughts with you!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a story with you about my 2011 Suzuki Sx4. I bought it brand new in 2012 and overall, I've been really happy with it. However, I did notice a strange smell whenever I used the air conditioner or defrost. I reached out to my Suzuki dealer and they were really helpful. They had dealt with this issue before and thought it might be related to the vapor coming back into the vent. They ran the hose to a different area and said it should be fixed. Unfortunately, the next time I used the air conditioner, the smell was still there. I contacted Suzuki again and they did their best to help, but ultimately, we had to go to arbitration. Even though Suzuki said the car was working as designed, I still felt frustrated. Despite this experience, I still think Suzuki makes great cars and I would consider buying from them again in the future.
