The Mercury Colony Park is an American luxury full-size station wagon that was marketed by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company between 1957 and 1991. Distinguished by its simulated wood-grain paneling, the Colony Park was marketed as either the premium-trim or the sole full-size station wagon offering of the division. Following the 1960 demise of Edsel, full-size Mercury vehicles shared bodywork with Ford; the Colony Park served as the counterpart of the Ford Country Squire through 1991.

Serving as the flagship, and more exclusive, station wagon series of the Ford Motor Company — as the Lincoln division has not offered a factory-produced station wagon — the Colony Park was marketed against the similar Chrysler Town & Country prior to its 1979 downsizing, and GM's Buick Estate and Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, each also offering external (simulated) woodgrain trim. During the mid-1950s and '60s, the Mercury Commuter was briefly offered as a lower-priced alternative to the Colony Park without the simulated woodgrain appearance, but lost sales to the very similar Ford Country Sedan and Ford Ranch Wagon and was cancelled in 1968, leaving the Colony Park as the only Mercury station wagon. In 1976, American Motors Corporation introduced the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, with similar passenger accommodation, luxury standard equipment and a simulated woodgrain appearance built on a dedicated chassis.

Through the late 1980s, demand for full-size station wagons declined as consumer interests shifted towards minivans and four-door SUVs. As the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis underwent a major redesign for the 1992 model year, the two model lines dropped the station wagon body from the lineup. Up to the 2010 closure of the Mercury brand, the Colony Park was not directly replaced.

Common 1982 Mercury Colony park problems

The Mercury Colony Park, produced from 1957 to 1991, was a full-size station wagon that shared the same platforms and body as the Ford Country Squire. While the Colony Park was known for its spacious interior and luxurious features, it also faced several common problems reported by owners.

  • Electrical issues: The 1980 Mercury Colony Park, in particular, suffered from electrical problems, including issues with the window regulator and switches on the driver's door.
  • Rust: Rust was a common issue with the Colony Park, especially in areas where road salt was used during the winter months. The 1969 Pontiac Catalina that the Mercury wagon replaced had severely oxidized metallic green paint, indicating the potential for rust issues in the Colony Park.
  • Mechanical reliability: The 1980 Colony Park had issues with the AOD four-speed automatic transmission, which was not as robust as traditional analog carburetors or electronic fuel injection systems. This led to transmission failures and the need for replacement.
  • Fuel efficiency: As a full-size station wagon with a V8 engine, the Colony Park was not known for its fuel efficiency. This became a significant issue during the oil crises of the 1970s, leading to a decline in sales and the eventual discontinuation of the model.
  • Outdated design: By the mid-1980s, the design of the Colony Park was becoming increasingly outdated, with a boxy and uninspired appearance that failed to appeal to many buyers. This, combined with the rising popularity of minivans and SUVs, led to a decline in sales and the eventual discontinuation of the model.

In summary, the Mercury Colony Park faced several common problems, including electrical issues, rust, mechanical reliability, fuel efficiency, and outdated design. While the model was known for its spacious interior and luxurious features, these issues ultimately contributed to its decline in popularity and eventual discontinuation.
