2018 Gmc Terrain problems
The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.
First generation (2010)
The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.
The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: The car very suddenly went into a reduced engine power mode, with check engine light and was immediately parked. Figuring I could turn the car off and turn it back on, however it sputtered turning off and shook violently before I was able to turn it off. It would then not turn back over, so I left it off and had a tow truck drive it to a GMC mechanic. The GMC mechanic was unable to diagnose an issue after days. I then had it towed to another local mechanic who stated the parts were "junk" and the engine needed to be replaced. Engine codes were related to the camshaft sensor and brake booster. It is my understanding the vacuum pump broke off into pieces, went into and destroyed my engine.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-12
- VIN: 3GKALSEX0JL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Vacuum pump is in the shop now being replaced for the 7th time in almost 6 years. The previous one was replaced in September 2023. You get no warning signs, then all of a sudden you can barely press down on the brake pedal. This started within the 1st year of purchase.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-14
- VIN: 3GKALTEX5JL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was driving down the highway between 65 and 70 MPH. The semi-truck in front of me almost missed his turn and stopped quickly to make a 90 degree turn off the highway. I went to slow my vehicle appropriately, and my brakes did not respond. I had no warning that my brakes were compromised. I quickly used the downshift button to use my engine to slow me down and I crashed my vehicle off the road into the sagebrush (luckily no trees and there wasn't a dramatic drop off). At that time, after my vehicle came to a stop, I received a warning on my dash that stated "service brake assist". I looked up the issue on my phone to see what may have happened, and read that GMC had a recall for this very issue. I contacted the dealership and they indicated that they were aware that the 2018 GMC Terrain has this issue, but it was not included in the recall. I am traumatized by this incident. I am a very experienced driver, but I had bought this vehicle for my daughter, had she been driving, this would have been a catastrophic accident. I have nightmares about if this had failed when approaching a crosswalk or in a school zone. If GMC is aware of the problem, and they had a full recall on this on other models with this same problem, why aren't they fixing the Terrain, why are they waiting for a fatality. It is unacceptable, dangerous, and I don't even want to know what the cost is going to be to repair the vehicle. I am thankful it wasn't much worse.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-26
- VIN: 3GKALTEV5JL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-06
- VIN: 3GKALMEX5JL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The brakes stop working, they get really stiff and locks in the middle of the highway, very hard to stop and almost caused an accident, it is not the first time, the vehicle was serviced by an authorized mechanic and the problem had been resolved until today, the brakes locked and almost caused me to loose control of the vehicles brake system.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-27
- VIN: 3GKALMEV9JL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The clips popped off or something happened and now the headliner is hanging and I can't see out the rear view mirror. It's a hazard for anyone sitting in backseat. I've had it in 2 different shops .needs to be a recall because I've read several other people having this issue
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
- VIN: 3GKALMEVXJL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: We were driving back from vacation and while on I-95 the brakes went out. The check engine light came on and the service brake assist light came on. My husband was able to pull off to the side of the road but if it weren’t for already starting to slow down due to an accident we were approaching this could have been much worse. When the brakes went out my husband could hardly press the brake peddle. After researching this appears to be a known issue amongst GM vehicles. It appears to be the vacuum pump that went out. There is an open recall for certain models of GM but not all. This was such a dangerous situation. We literally could have died. This should be a recall for all models as Terrains appear to be largely affected as well from this issue.
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
- VIN: 3GKALMEVXJL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving on the interstate the brakes all the sudden stopped working. I was able to stop the vehicle by pulling over to the shoulder of the road. I received a warning saying service brake assist and a check engine light after the brakes went out. The vehicle later shut off and is no start with no warning codes. I am currently towing the vehicle to a mechanic. Several people claim to have the same issue online stating that it is an issue with the brake vacuum booster shearing off in the exhaust cam which then causes major damage to the engine. It appears the same issue exists with several other GMC models that were already recalled
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-29
- VIN: 3GKALMEV5JL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While driving truck around 55mph with family in vehicle and tried to make a stop in a traffic light, notice truck had a hard brake pedal and did not stop, luckily I (Parent) around [XXX] of age was able to divert around and put on neutral until truck stoped in side of road. After a while of looking around and checking truck for system errors or lights there was no indication not warnings. i was able to move truck to a near by location and asked a mechanic to go look at it. Mechanic notice oil coming out of brake vacuum pump and took out part and mentioned that the pump had broken in pieces inside engine block and might need a replacement. Truck is still on shop and waiting for our decision to fix. At this point my family is so scared of this truck and don't even want to talk about the incident. Me as a parent is very concern on all this new vehicles that are suppose to be more reliable and better protection than older vehicles , i feel more protected in my 90’s truck. I hope this gets enough attention to at least save someone's life. Thanks in advance, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Negative 2018 Gmc Terrain car reviews
Positive 2018 Gmc Terrain car reviews
-
The redesign is unique and took a bit to grow on me, but I rather like it now. The interior design is a little truck-like, but certainly not offensive, and the materials are very nice. The electric driver's seat with lumbar support is exceptionally comfortable, and among the best I have ever experienced. No more back aches with this car! The front seat warmers are an added bonus. I've got the base 1.5L turbo engine which, contrary to some reviews, is plenty quick, even fast, very responsive, and quiet. The 9-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, almost imperceptibly, and never hunts for gears. I've read some negative comments about the button gear selector for the automatic transmission, but I quickly got used to it and now I like it. The car offers a smooth, quiet, well-controlled ride over all surfaces. Braking is excellent. I have no complaints about cargo capacity, however, I seldom carry much. The front fold-down passenger seat is a handy and unique feature that permits transporting 8-foot lumber, for example. The car performs like a champ around town and on the highway. I've been driving my GMC Terrain SLE with optional convenience and driver's alert packages for 15 months, and I have nothing but praise for it. I absolutely love this car!
-
There's plenty of legroom, which is great for me as I'm 6'6
-
I purchased my Terrain in May 2020 and was pleasantly surprised by its performance. With only 10,800 miles on the odometer, it felt like a brand new car. During the test drive, my partner and I were amazed by the 2.0 Turbo engine, which made us feel like we were in a rocket! The Terrain is also very easy to handle, especially for us oldies at 69 and 66. The back seats can be laid down with just one finger, making it the easiest I've ever seen. The ride is very agile and quick to respond to the driver's input. I mostly use the Sirius Radio selection and love it. The only minor issue we have is with the seat bolster, which can be bothersome when getting in and out of the vehicle. Lastly, the Owners Manual can be a bit challenging to get through, but with a little patience and some cigars on my patio, I managed to get through it in 4 days.
-
I've owned my Terrain for about 16 months and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any problems with it! I bought it brand new and have been pleased with its performance right from the start. Although I do notice some road noise, it's nothing compared to my 2013 Honda. It gets great gas mileage and overall, it's a vehicle that I really enjoy driving.

We recently replaced our 2016 Volvo XC70 with the GMC Terrain Denali since they stopped making it. We chose it because it has some of the same styling cues that make it a little more European/rugged rather than the American cushy Buick or Lincoln. We really enjoy the technology it offers, including the ability to remote start on the app even if you don't pay for an expensive Onstar plan. Although we were a little disappointed in the turning radius, some engine noise and winter handling, we found that Goodyear makes a very nice all-terrain tire for the Terrain which handled the end of winter well. We had a couple of issues in Jan 2020 with the brake assist warning coming on, but the techs were able to diagnose and fix it. In March 2021, our Terrain fell victim to the GM Infotainment issues, but the dealer was able to reprogram and swap out the entire system. Although the Nav freezes on occasion and the backup camera stays on a little too long after putting the car back in drive and moving forward nearly a half a block, we are hopeful that GM will get a handle on this since cars today are all about the technology. We do feel that the Denali is a little pricey for what you're getting as compared to a Lincoln or Buick, especially since the combined mpg on the Denali is 23 when the SL and SLT is 26. We hope that GM will address this issue soon.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my new SUV. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the dealership twice in the past month due to a strange noise it makes when I turn it off. The technicians are still trying to figure out what's causing it. I do think they're doing their best, but I have noticed that they could benefit from some additional training.

Despite having only 6,000 miles on my 2018 GMC Terrain, it has been in the shop for 33 days due to various issues such as the infotainment screen freezing, sensors going off, doors locking and unlocking by themselves, trunk opening randomly, and clunky shifting. Despite these persistent issues, GMC has failed to provide adequate solutions and has shown no respect for the consumer. It is unacceptable that they have been unable to fix the problems and have even told me to stop bringing it in for service, despite having multiple videos showing the issues. As a confident consumer, I demand that GMC takes responsibility for their faulty product and provides a satisfactory resolution.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an issue I've been having with my car. Whenever I'm driving, the center console shifts off and my Apple phone connection to the radio keeps shutting on and off. I've even taken a video of it happening, but the dealership says they need to see it in person. I've already brought it to the dealer three times, but unfortunately, they haven't been able to do anything about it. I've even contacted a lawyer about it. I've bought many GM vehicles in my life and have never had this problem before. Thank you for your time!

The car has had multiple issues, including rust and electrical problems that have not been resolved despite multiple attempts to fix them. The wheel well panel also shifted and buckled, which unfortunately is not covered by warranty. Despite contacting GM head office for five months, no action has been taken to resolve the issue. The trade-in offer from GMC was disappointingly low, given that the car is only halfway through its warranty. This has been a frustrating experience with poor customer service. It is not recommended to invest in this vehicle given the issues and lack of support from the manufacturer.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my recent experience with the 2018 GMC Terrain that I leased on Aug/03/2018. Despite having only 1311 miles on it, the Transmission Hot Idle warning light came on during a short trip to the DMV to register it. I was quite surprised and disappointed, as I have not taken it on any long trips and have been very careful with it. I took it back to the dealership where I leased it, and they informed me that they have never seen anything like it before. While this has been a frustrating experience, I am hopeful that we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
