1995 Pontiac Sunfire problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

Common 1995 Pontiac Sunfire problems

The Pontiac Sunfire, produced between 1995 and 2005, has been known for several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Engine Issues: The Sunfire has been known to have engine problems, with many owners reporting issues with misfiring cylinders and cracked head gaskets. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor maintenance, faulty parts, or design defects. In some cases, the engine may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly repair.
  • Power Window Mechanism Failure: Many Sunfire owners have reported issues with the power window mechanism, which is known to break due to the use of cheap plastic parts in the power window pulley assembly. This can be a frustrating problem, as it can be difficult and expensive to fix.
  • Fuel Pump Failure: Some Sunfire owners have reported issues with the fuel pump, which can fail due to wear and tear or other factors. This can cause a variety of problems, including difficulty starting the car, stalling, and poor performance.

  • Interior Design: Several owners have criticized the interior design of the Sunfire, noting that it is blob-like and lacks headroom. This can be a particular issue for taller drivers, who may find it difficult to fit comfortably in the car.

Overall, the Pontiac Sunfire has been known for a variety of common problems, including starting and stalling issues, engine problems, power window mechanism failure, fuel pump failure, electrical issues, brakes slipping, and interior design flaws. These issues can be frustrating and costly to fix, and may be a consideration for potential buyers.

This vehicle is a pretty decent and reliable car. Haven't had any major issues with this car since I have had it. I think this is a decent car for someone who is just starting out driving or who simply needs for commuting. It is an excellent gas saver, it doesn't take much to fill up the gas tank.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-01-31
  • VIN: 1G2JB1241S7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: WHEN DRIVING AND SPEED REACHED 40 MPH THE CAR VIBRATES, WHEN SPEED REACHED 60 MPH IT VIBRATES AGAIN. WHEN DECELERATING AFTER DRIVING FOR A LITTLE WHILE, AND SPEED REACHED 10 MPH (WHILE DECELERATING) THE CAR VIBRATES VIOLENTLY, THEN SHUTS OFF. WHEN I RESTART THE ENGINE IT RUNS NOISILY WHILE STILL IN PARK, THEN SHUTS OFF AGAIN WHEN PUT IN GEAR. I HAVE TO WAIT A MINUTE OR TWO BEFORE I START THE CAR AND PUT IT IN GEAR AND IT RUNS, UNTIL I DECELERATE AGAIN AND THE CYCLE STARTS OVER. I HAVE HAD MY HEAD GASKET REPAIRED/REPLACE BY JAY PONTIAC IN COLUMBUS GEORGIA AT MY EXPENSE BECAUSE I RECEIVE THE RECALL NOTICE ON THE HEAD GASKET LEAK SEVERAL YEARS AFTER THE RECALL CAMPAIGN WAS OVER. I HAVE HAD MY ALTERNATOR REPAIRED/REPLACED, TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, ETC. THE DEALER NEVER SEES ANY PROBLEMS WHEN HE DIAGNOSES MY CAR ON HIS COMPUTER & EVERYTIME HE SUGGESTS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND I GO BROKE PAYING TO GET IT FIXED, THE PROBLEM REMAINS. I AM VERY FED UP WITH PONTIAC & GM & THEIR DEALERS/SERVICE PEOPLE WHO SEEM TO KNOW NOTHING OF THEIR PRODUCTS' FAILURE. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS WITH MY CAR SO I CAN GET IT FIXED. I AM ALSO SEEKING TO PURCHASE A NEW VEHICLE AND FROM THE HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE I'VE BEEN HAVING WITH PONTIAC & GM I AM STAYING AWAY FROM THEIR PRODUCTS AND ADVISING EVERYONE I KNOW TO STAY AWAY FROM THEM. I AM AT THE POINT WHERE THE ONLY AUTOMOBILE PRODUCT I AM INTERESTED IN IS FOREIGN MADE. I UNDERSTAND YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, BUT I DON'T UNDERSTAND A PRODUCT HAVING PROBLEMS EVEN THE MANUFACTURER CAN'T FIGURE OUT. *JB

PONTIAC WON'T COVER IT BECAUSE THE CAR IS MORE THAN 7 YEARS OLD AND DEALER WON'T COVER IT BECAUSE IT WAS MORE THAN ONE YEAR WHEN IT HAD TO BE REPLACED THE SECOND TIME. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-12-19
  • VIN: 1G2JB5245S7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: IN FULFILLMENT OF RECALL 02008-S, A GM DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE STARTER WIRING HARNESS WILL DESTROY THE TERMINAL ON THE SOLENOID, RESULTING IN THE REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF BOTH THE SOLENOID AND STARTER MOTOR. BOTH PARTS ARE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER BUT GM WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF THIS DAMAGE, APPROX $260. IN SHORT, A RUSTY TERMINAL WILL PROBABLY BREAK WHEN REMOVED. FOR THIS, GM WANTS TO SELL A NEW STARTER WITH SOLENOID AT FULL PRICE. I HAVE CONFIRMED THE LIKELIHOOD OF THE DAMAGE WITH AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. GM REFUSED ME DIRECTLY UPON APPEAL. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT RECALL, THOUGH RELATIVELY SIMPLE TO IMPLEMENT. THE CAR IS ONLY 7 YEARS OLD. GM SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO COVER THE FULL COST OF IMPLEMENTATION, WITHOUT PROFITING ON AN OTHERWISE UNNECESSARY REPLACEMENT OF EXPENSIVE COMPONENTS. GM COULD REPLACE JUST THE SOLENOID OR PERHAPS EVEN JUST THE TERMINAL. THE WIRE LEAD COULD BE PROPERLY SPLICED WITHOUT TERMINAL REMOVAL. THIS POSSIBILITY (OR PERHAPS PROBABILITY) WAS NOT MENTIONED IN THE RECALL NOTICE OR IN CONVERATIONS WITH THE DEALER PRIOR TO THE RECALL WORK. I AM ARRANGING TO HAVE THE SOLENOID ALONE REPLACED FOR APPROX. $140. I SUGGEST THAT GM BE ORDERED TO REIMBURSE CUSTOMERS FOR THIS AND OTHER COSTS REQUIRED TO IMPLEMENT THE RECALL FULLY AND TO COVER THEM DIRECTLY FROM THIS POINT FORWARD. I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT GM HAS ALREADY INSTALLED A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF NEW STARTERS AT OWNERS' EXPENSE.

Additionally, both front wheel mounts and the main gasket for the oil require replacement. There is also a short in the electrical system that causes the ABS warning light to come on when the four-ways are turned on. Despite these challenges, I am confident that with the right repairs and maintenance, this car can be restored to its former glory.

I've had my Sunfire for 7 years and it's been a decent car. Although the transmission has been a major problem, I'm on my 3rd one and only have 86000 miles on it. I'm not hard on cars, and have done a great deal of highway driving in the car. Other problems have been pretty standard. On the bright side, I like the gas mileage and it has been a cute, zippy car for a single gal. Now with a husband and baby though, we're ready for a minivan. I wish the car had power windows and locks, but for a basic small car, there is tons of room when the rear seat folds down. I've got lots of stuff to and from college in it.

Reading some of the other reviews, I have to say that, other than normal wear and tear, I've clocked over 130,000 miles with only minor problems. The fan only worked on high due to a broken circuit board, which is easily fixable. I also had a leaky fuel injector, which again was easily fixable for anyone with any mechanical sense. Just give her gas and change her oil, and she just keeps on truckin'!

Hello! It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your 95 Pontiac SunfireSE Coupe for 8 years. I'm glad to hear that it handles well in snowy and rainy weather. It's impressive that very little has needed to be replaced on the car, it sounds like it's built to last!

This car has been amazing! The performance is really good, especially for a small sporty coupe. In the 166K miles that I've driven it, I've only had to replace a few things like the crank sensor, water pump and AC compressor, but that's not bad at all for a $15k car. It's also really easy to work on and the 2.3L engine and 5-speed have been incredibly reliable. I still get compliments on how good the car looks and people can't believe it's a 95 with almost 170k miles. I've driven the car pretty hard, but with regular maintenance and oil changes every 3000 miles, it's been a great investment.

Hi there! I've owned my car since it was new, which has been about 8 years now. It's been a great car overall, but recently I've run into a couple of issues. The ventilation fan only seems to work on high, and I need to replace the head gasket before it causes any further damage. The air compressor also needs to be replaced, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. I currently have 120K miles on it and plan to keep it for another 2 or 3 years. Interestingly, my friend has already expressed interest in buying it when I decide to sell!

I bought my Sunfire a little over 5 months ago when my vehicle got stolen. It was all I could afford and because of my credit, I couldn't get financed. However, I am very pleased with my purchase. I thought that by now I would have had problems with it, but I haven't had one. I find the car fun to drive and excellent on gas mileage. At the time I purchased the car, I thought of it as only being temporary until I could purchase a brand new car again. But now I think I'll keep it until I drive it into the ground.
