2000 Pontiac Sunfire problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

ALSO, MY WINDSHIELD FLUID DOES NOT SPRAY. I HAD THE WIRING REPLACED SOME TIME AROUND WHEN I PURCHASED IT 4 YEARS AGO (OLD PART NOT AVAILABLE). NOW, THE PROBLEM HAS ARISEN AGAIN, AND I MUST TAKE MY TIME AND MONEY TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE JUST SEEN ON LINE TWELVE (12) "TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS" REPORTING THIS PROBLEM DATING 1999 THROUGH 2006. I BELIEVE THAT THIS STEERING SHAFT PROBLEM IS LIFE THREATENING. WHAT CAN I DO TO ENSURE THAT THIS PROBLEM IS TAKEN CARE OF AND NOT JUST "GREASED" OVER AS IT HAS BEEN IN THE PAST? *JB

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-01-01
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: VEHICLE: 2000 PONTIAC SUNFIRE THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS DO NOT WORK; WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PUT IN GEAR, THE LIGHTS "FLICKER" AS THE RELAY FIRES, BUT THE LIGHTS DO NOT REMAIN ON, THEN THE "SERVICE" LIGHT COMES ON. ABOUT 75% OF THE TIME, THE HEADLIGHTS WILL NOT TURN ON, AND IF THEY DO, THE BRIGHT LIGHTS DO NOT WORK AT ALL. YOU CAN "OVER-RIDE" THE SYSTEM BY PULLING THE DIMMER SWITCH BACK PARTIALLY, WHICH THEN ALLOWS THE HEADLIGHTS TO COME ON. I HAVE REPLACED THE HEADLAMP BULBS, AND THE DRL RELAY, BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. AS I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THIS, I SAW A WEBSITE CALLED "CARSURVEY.ORG" WHERE THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM ON SUNFIRES AND CAVALIERS (1998 - 2002). MANY OF THESE COMMENTS SAY THAT ACCORDING TO GM DEALERSHIPS, THIS IS A WIRING HARNESS PROBLEM, AND THAT GM IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT WILL OFFER NO ASSISTANCE IN CORRECTING IT. MY QUESTION TO YOU IS THIS: DOES YOUR ORGANIZATION HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL PEOPLE DIE AS A RESULT OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE YOU WILL GET INVOLVED? I DO NOT KNOW IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY ACCIDENTS AS A RESULT OF THIS, BUT I HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT THERE WILL BE. PLEASE HELP!!!!!! *NM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-02-20
  • VIN: 1G2JB1244Y7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT A PATTERN OF SMALL (BUT ANNOYING) COMPLAINTS WITH THE 2000 PONTIAC SUNFIRE I RECENTLY OWNED. I STATE "RECENTLY OWNED" BECAUSE I GRATEFULLY TRADED IT IN LAST WEEK WITH JUST 56,234 MILES ON IT ON A NEW 2006 SUBARU IMPREZA. I BOUGHT THE PONTIAC NEW IN 2000 AND CARED FOR IT UP UNTIL RECENTLY, WHEN PROBLEMS BEGAN CROPPING UP ON IT LIKE SNOWFLAKES IN A BLIZZARD. MY SUNFIRE RAN WELL UNTIL ABOUT SIX MONTH AGO WHEN I BEGAN TO NOTICE A BURNING OIL SMELL FROM ITS VENTS. IT TURNED OUT THAT IT NEEDED A NEW VALVE COVER GASKET THAT WAS CAUSING A MINOR OIL LEAK. ITS EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS ALSO BEGINNING TO RUST OUT. HOWEVER, RECENTLY, A FEW LIGHTS ON THE DASH CLUSTER THAT ILLUMINATED THE CAR'S TACHOMETER AND SHIFTER CONSOLE WENT OUT-NO REASON GIVEN-GARAGE SAID IT WOULD BE A DIFFICULT REPAIR. THEN, ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO, THE DIGITAL ODOMETER BEGAN TO GO BLANK AND SHOW SYMBOLS. I HAD HAD ENOUGH, SO I TRADED IT IN LAST WEEK (AFTER REVEALING TO THE DEALER THE PROBLEMS THAT IT HAD). I HOPE THEY CAN FIX IT UP AND PROVIDE IT WITH A NEW OWNER-IT WAS A NICE CAR, BUT I DON'T THINK A CAR SHOULD BEGIN TO WEAR OUT THAT QUICKLY-MY PREVIOUS CAR, A 1993 FORD ESCORT BOUGHT NEW, LASTED ME FOR OVER 120,000 MILES BEFORE I TRADED IT IN ON THE PONTIAC. AGAIN, GM NEEDS TO LOOK INTO ITS QUALITY-NO WONDER THEY ARE LOSING CUSTOMERS (LIKE ME) TO FOREIGN CAR COMPANIES. *NM

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the car you mentioned. While it's true that the 2000 model year Sunfire may not be worth a lot of money these days, there are still some great things about it. Sure, it may not be the fastest car out there, but it's still a reliable option for getting around town. Plus, it has a lot of character! I understand that domestic cars may not be for everyone, but I think the Sunfire is definitely worth considering. Thanks for letting me share my opinion!

My 2000 Sunfire SE required a new battery and starter within the first year, and in 2002, the computer had to be reprogrammed due to engine lights coming on. Additionally, the entire steering assembly had to be replaced, all of which occurred just two weeks before the warranty expired. As a result, I have lost faith in this car and will not consider purchasing one again.

It's actually a decent car for the price! The performance is acceptable, especially with the manual transmission, and it seems to be reliable so far with 40000 miles on it. I did have a small issue with the engine struggling to restart when hot after stalling, but a quick visit to the dealer fixed everything. The only downside is the gas mileage, which could be better for a car with only 115 hp. On the bright side, the gas tank has a good capacity!

I bought a stunning red GT back in 2004 with 60K miles on it. The monsoon radio was amazing and I even added an amp with 3 10'' speakers. As a member of the army, I frequently travelled back to my hometown which was about 320 miles away. I used to fly up and down i-95 and this car was perfect for it. It accelerates quickly and handles exceptionally well. Unfortunately, after 4 months of use, the engine gave out on me. I had to replace the engine and it was never quite the same. Additionally, the CD player stopped working after 7 months and the LCD display for the Monsoon audio system also stopped functioning. Unfortunately, the radio head unit cannot be replaced due to Monsoon wiring techniques. The door handle even fell off and I had to super glue it back on. Despite all of this, it's still a tank though!

This is actually my second Pontiac Sunfire Convertible (the first one was a 1996) and I must say, I absolutely love it! It's definitely the most fun you can have for $10,000. I'm always surprised by its peppy response at traffic lights, and it's not noisy at all even when I'm driving well over 70 mph on the highway. Plus, I get approximately 40 mpg when I'm doing 50 mph on the interstate for four hours.

This car has been surprisingly good. I was looking for a sporty yet cheap car to take me to school and back. I'm absolutely loving the power, it has a great get-up and go, it doesn't lag behind like other similar models. The GT style and model is what makes the Sunfire.

  3. Zion Cole 2024-09-07

This car may not be for everyone, but when I saw it on the lot, I knew I wanted it. The price tag of 700 and its nice look were just too good to pass up. It's a convertible, which is a luxury these days. I did have to buy it with a piston misfire, but I took it to a shop and got the entire head repaired. Although there were a lot of little things to fix, everything was relatively easy to get to in the engine and around the car. I've fixed the automatic window, changed hoses and belts, and even used stopleak and JB weld to fix a big crack in the engine block. The car is fun to drive and has been an adventure and learning experience for me. However, there are some electrical issues and the convertible top needs some work. Despite these issues, the car is resilient and worth the effort. It sat around doing nothing for a year because I lost the key and my license was suspended, but now it's back on the road and running smoothly.

Hey there! I just wanted to say that your experience with the storm package sounds really awesome!

  5. Baron Nitzsche 2024-08-24

I still love my first car after 110,000 miles, 2 minor fender benders and loads of road trips. Even the SE engine has some pep with an upper engine mount and a K&N air filter. It gets me where I'm going with a touch of style. Not the cleanest lines in a car, but definitely not a boring Civic/Camry/Escort/etc. I've only had to replace a hose in 8+ years and while there are some noticeable vibrations, they're not too bad overall. I've been very pleased with the reliability, fun and comfort for the price.
