2001 Pontiac Sunfire problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

Common 2001 Pontiac Sunfire problems

The Pontiac Sunfire, manufactured between 1995 and 2005, is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. One of the most prevalent issues is related to the turn signal switch, which may fail and cause the signals not to work. This issue might be due to electrical or mechanical failure of the switch, which can be caused by wear and tear or manufacturing defects.

Another common problem reported by Sunfire owners is difficulty starting the car, which can be caused by various factors. For instance, one owner reported that their 2001 Sunfire would crank fine but would not fire, and they also had no lights on the instrument cluster when they turned the key on. This issue could be caused by a faulty ignition system, a dead battery, or a malfunctioning fuel pump.

The 2001 Sunfire's ignition system has also been known to cause problems, with some owners reporting that the car would crank but not start, and the antitheft light was on in the dashboard. This issue might be caused by a faulty ignition switch or a problem with the antitheft system.

The Sunfire's antitheft system has also been reported as a common problem by owners. Some owners reported that the antitheft light would not go off, even after trying to reset the system. This issue might be caused by a faulty sensor or a problem with the wiring of the antitheft system.

In addition to these issues, some Sunfire owners have reported problems with the fuel system, such as low fuel pressure, which can cause difficulty starting the car. This issue might be caused by a faulty fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, or a problem with the fuel pressure regulator.

The Sunfire's electrical system has also been reported as a common problem by owners. Some owners reported that the car would not start, and the instrument cluster had no lights. This issue might be caused by a faulty alternator, a dead battery, or a problem with the wiring of the electrical system.

In summary, the Pontiac Sunfire has several common problems that have been reported by its owners, including issues with the turn signal switch, difficulty starting the car, problems with the ignition system, antitheft system, fuel system, and electrical system. These issues can be caused by various factors, including wear and tear, manufacturing defects, and electrical or mechanical failure.

Is the 2001 Pontiac Sunfire a reliable car?

Outstanding car

It has always been dependable. She has driven it from Virginia, Ohio and Florida. We've put on two sets of tires, two sets of brakes rotated and changed oil every five thousand miles and a tune-up.

This vehicle is a pretty decent and reliable car. Haven't had any major issues with this car since I have had it. I think this is a decent car for someone who is just starting out driving or who simply needs for commuting. It is an excellent gas saver, it doesn't take much to fill up the gas tank.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-11-01
  • VIN: 1G2JB524317
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I TOO HAVE A 2001 PONTIAC SUNFIRE SE 2.2 AUTO WITH ABOUT 58,000 MILES ON IT. I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN MARCH OF 2002 WITH ONLY 14,937 MILES ON IT. I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR TILL NOVEMBER 2004 AT 44,874 MILES, WHEN AN 8 POINT BUCK RAN INTO THE LEFT SIDE FRONT FENDER AND DAMAGED IT, THE HOOD, WINDSHIELD, DRIVER'S DOOR, ROOF, AND BACK DOOR WHILE I WAS DRIVING 55 MPH. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED, THEN SAT OUTSIDE FOR ABOUT 4 1/2 YEARS. HAD TO INSTALL A NEW FUEL PUMP AND BATTERY, THEN I STARTED DRIVING IT AGAIN EVERY DAY IN NOVEMBER 2009. NOW I HAVE NO HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS, LIGHTS ARE GOOD. ALSO, WHEN I PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO GEAR, THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS FLASH REAL FAST ABOUT 7 OR 8 TIMES, THEN GO OUT, AND THE SERVICE LIGHT COMES ON, BUT IF I TURN ON THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS FIRST, IT IS FINE! SERVICE LIGHT GOES OUT AFTER CAR IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, UNTIL PUT BACK INTO GEAR WITH THE HEADLIGHTS OFF! I HAVE REPLACED THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS RELAY WITH A NEW ONE, BUT IT STILL DOES THE SAME THING, AND IF I LEAVE THE RELAY OUT, THEN WHEN I TURN ON THE HEADLIGHTS, ONE IS NORMAL AND THE OTHER IS REAL DIM!! THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW. I THOUGHT IT MAY BE A PROBLEM STEMMING FROM THE DEER DAMAGE AND REPAIRS, BUT I SEE FROM ALL OF THE OTHER COMMENTS ON HERE FROM THE PAST 9 OR 10 YEARS OR SO, THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR. WOULD THIS BE THE TURN SIGNAL/DIMMER SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN CAUSING ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS?? ANY IDEAS?? THANK YOU!!

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-03-11

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AS WELL AS THE SERVICE (WRENCH) LIGHT AT THE TIME OF THE RUNNING LIGHTS FAILING. I BEGAN USING THE HIGHBEAMS ONLY (UNTIL I COULD FIGURE OUT THE RUNNING LIGHT) AND THEY WILL NOT WORK NOW. THE HEADLIGHTS WILL STILL FLASH WHEN THE LOCK BUTTON IS USED ON THE KEY REMOTE. I HAVE GOTTEN PULLED OVER FOR MY HEADLIGHTS NOT WORKING BECAUSE MY HIGHBEAMS FAILED IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I NOW HAVE NO HEADLIGHTS AND HAVE BEEN READING INTERNET DISCUSSION BOARDS OF MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM. MANY ARE SAYING THAT GM KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM AND REFUSE TO RECALL THE PROBLEM. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-06-28
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1G2JB524617
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 2001 PONTIAC - AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT CAUSES TOTAL WRECK JUNE 28, 2005, CA. 1130 - ON A RIGHT-ANGLE TURN AT LESS THAN 5 MPH INTO A NARROW LANE IN A PARKING AREA AT CONROE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER , CONROE, TX, AT ABOUT 1130 JUNE 28, THE LEFT REAR WHEEL OF MY 2001 PONTIAC SUNFIRE WENT UP ONTO A 3-TO-4-INCH-HIGH CONCRETE MEDIAN. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO STEER OFF THE MEDIAN, THE RESULTING SLIGHT DROP CAUSED MY AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY. THIS DEPLOYMENT CAUSED BRUISES ON BOTH FOREARMS, BRUISED MY LOWER RIGHT RIBCAGE AND FORCED BOTH HANDS BACK OFF THE WHEEL, PREVENTING ME FROM STEERING THE CAR. FURTHERMORE, THE DEPLOYMENT FORCED MY LEGS AWAY FROM THE FOOT CONTROLS. THE DEPLOYING AIRBAG KNOCKED MY SPECTACLES UP ONTO MY FOREHEAD, THE LEFT TEMPLE CAUSING A SMALL CUT AND BENDING THE SPECTACLES SO THEY COULD NOT BE WORN AND HAD TO BE REPAIRED LATER. AS A RESULT OF THIS AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT I WAS TOTALLY UNABLE TO CONTROL DIRECTION OR SPEED. THE CAR LUNGED AT ABOUT A 30-DEGREE ANGLE TO THE RIGHT FOR A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 12 FEET AND SMASHED INTO A PILLAR, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SUSTAIN SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END, SMASHING THE BUMPER AND THE RADIATOR AND CRACKING THE RIGHT PART OF THE WINDSHIELD. PERSONNEL FROM THE HOSPITAL, THE CONROE POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND THE LOCAL EMS WERE ON THE SCENE IMMEDIATELY. THE CONROE POLICE ASSIGNED A CASE NUMBER 05064218 TO THE ACCIDENT. I AM APPALLED TO THINK THAT THIS SAME ACCIDENT WHICH DESTROYED MY VEHICLE AND HURT ME WITHIN A FEW FEET AT EXTREMELY LOW SPEED MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED AT A BUMP IN THE ROAD AT HIGHWAY SPEED. HAD THE AIRBAGS NOT DEPLOYED THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT, AS I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO OPERATE MY VEHICLE PROPERLY. THIS EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN VERY COSTLY IN TERMS OF VEHICLE REPLACEMENT AND PERSONAL PAIN. OBVIOUSLY, MORE THOUGHT HAS TO BE GIVEN TO THE SUBJECT OF AIRBAGS AND SAFETY. A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL MENTALITY DOES NOT WORK. *JB

I'm disappointed with my purchase of this car. It's not getting the gas mileage that was advertised, and I'm only getting around 20 miles per gallon. The interior design reminds me of a dentist's office, and the exterior design is deceiving as it looks like it would have a lot of horsepower, but it only has 115 hp. I purchased this car on 08/07 when it had 9,000 miles on it, but I should have researched more before making my decision.

  2. Buster Ryan 2024-10-13

This car has had several issues, including a persistent transmission grinding noise despite four attempts to fix it, as well as a malfunctioning fuel gauge and worn-out seats. Additionally, it has lower power compared to its competitors. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my assessment of this car's condition.

  3. Johathan Parker 2024-08-16

I bought the car because it was very affordable with all the discounts. Although it doesn't have a solid feel to it and has some minor defects, I haven't had any major problems yet. The gas mileage is not great, only around 23 mpg even on the highway.

When I first got my car, I absolutely loved it! However, after a few months, I started experiencing some issues. First, I had to replace the gas filter, and then the fuel pump. Finally, the odometer stopped working. But, all of these are minor issues. Once I got past them, it turned out to be a great car to have. I love driving it to school. It rides smoothly, and even though the interior is not the most attractive, all in all, it is a great car.

Great car! I'm glad to hear that you've never had a problem with it. It's amazing that it can still start in the morning even when left outside unplugged at -40. You've only had to replace wear and tear parts, which is impressive. It's also incredibly safe - you were even T-Boned by a semi truck and walked out of the hospital with nothing but bruises. The crumple zones are great, making it a safe and reliable car. It sounds like it was worth every penny you spent on it!

  2. Jovanny Bernier 2024-11-01

Hi there! I've owned my car for 2 years and 2.5 months now, and I've driven over 57,800 miles in it! I'm happy to report that it holds up really well in an accident. I also use a KN air filter for a little extra horsepower. I'm really excited to get another one!

  3. Donald Stroman 2024-10-03

I bought this car a week a month ago, and I absolutely love it! It's definitely worth the money, and a great purchase if you're young and looking for an easy-to-soup-up car that's also affordable.

  4. Green Volkman 2024-10-01

2001 Sunfire GT 2.4 Twin Cam, 75th Anniversary Edition. I absolutely love my car! I've had it for almost 20 years now and, as with any aging car, it needs some repairs, but nothing major. I'm proud to say that I still have the original clutch, and although I can no longer see the odometer, I'll bet it has at least 300,000 or more miles on it. Good job, Pontiac!

  5. Walton McCullough 2024-09-13

I love my Sunfire! It's a small car with a BIG attitude. I have the sun and sound package and I'm really enjoying it, although I have to admit that I'm constantly blowing the speakers! But that's a small price to pay for such a great ride. I'll definitely be leaving those other 4 cylinders in my rear view!
