Pontiac Sunfire problems

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.
The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.
At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

Engine issues are a significant concern for Sunfire owners. The 2002 Sunfire, for example, has been reported to have engine problems with 35 complaints out of 11 model years. In summary, the Pontiac Sunfire has been reported to have common problems related to the engine, electrical system, brakes, lights, and windows. These issues can lead to inconvenience, reduced performance, and safety risks. It is essential for Sunfire owners to address these issues promptly to ensure the safe and reliable operation of their vehicles.
How many miles can you put on a Pontiac Sunfire?
good maintenance should get it to 300k.
How long do Pontiac engines last?
You should have no problem exceeding 200K with your Bonnevile. I say this mainly because it has the 3.8 engine which is pretty much bulletproof. Just keep up all scheduled maintenance and the Pontiac will be around for years to come. Make sure the transmission is maintained as well.
What happened to Pontiac Sunfire?
The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

Pontiac Sunfire 2005
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
- Date Complaint: 2022-06-22
- VIN: 3G2JB14F45S
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: None of the gauges work properly Gm has not issued a recall despite the numerous complaints and it is a 500 to 800 dollar repair bill to replace the instrument cluster. 2005 Sunfire and the instrument cluster is malfunctioning. The gas gauge has stopped working altogether and the temp and rpm gauge work erratically. This is definitely a recall issue and has nothing to do with the maintenance of the vehicle. Gm wants me to have a dealer check the vehicle when they are well aware of this issue as there are multiple posting from owners of this issue online.

- Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 2004 PONTIAC SUNFIRE, I HAD TO HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT IN ORDER FOR IT TO GO STRAIGHT. I THOUGHT I MIGHT NEED A FRONT END ALIGNMENT AND DROPPED THE CAR OFF AT MY NEIGHBORHOOD FIRESTONE DEALER THAT NORMALLY WORKS ON MY CARS. AFTER CHECKING THE CAR, THEY CALLED ME AND SAID THE FRAME OF THE CAR WAS RUSTED OUT AND IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR, THEY GAVE ME PICTURES OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME WHICH ALL READY HAD CRACKED APART DUE TO THE RUST. THEY SAID IF YOU HIT A POTHOLE OR ANYTHING IN THE ROAD THE FRAME COULD SPLIT APART AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I CALLED A BODY SHOP TO SEE IF IT COULD BE REPAIRED AND THEY SAID IT WAS TO BIG OF A JOB.. THEY RECOMMENDED JUNKING THE CAR.. THIS CAR IS IN REAL GOOD SHAPE EXCEPT FOR THIS MAJOR DEFECT. THIS HAS FORCED ME TO BUY ANOTHER CAR.. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE QUALITY OF YOUR PRODUCT. I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM.

Vehicle year: 2005
It's been almost a year since I lost my Sunfire, but I loved it! The only regular problem I had was with the tires. After four years, the battery only stalled on me once, and the window motor started shorting. But those were minor problems compared to the fact that I was able to move efficiently. I took many 14-hour road trips in my little Sunfire. Although comfort was a bit short on those trips, the gas mileage was unmatched by most other cars. With just $60, I could easily get from Tucson to Dallas. I loved the sunroof and the sound system. The MP3 player was rarely used, but the sound quality was amazing. The Sunfire was my first car, so maybe I'm a bit biased here, but it was an amazing first car!

This was my first car purchase and I'm still driving it 12 years later! I chose the 98 Pontiac Sunfire because of its sleek look and features, and it has never let me down. The 2.4 twin cam engine has plenty of pep, making it perfect for driving in the Mojave Desert or in Downtown San Francisco traffic. Although I've had some persistent problems with the cooling system, such as needing to replace the radiator fan and thermostat more times than I can remember (thankfully only a few hundred to repair), and the ABS system has failed irreparably, I still love my little blue car. It has gone over 183,000 miles and I'm looking forward to many more years of driving it!

My wife loves the car I purchased for her. It's a significant upgrade from the Suburban we traded in. Now, she can easily maneuver in and out of parking spaces, navigate through traffic, and save on gas when running errands. Although we didn't get the power package or On-star due to unavailability at the dealership, it's not a problem since she's the only one driving it, and she already has a Cadillac CTS. In the future, it will be a perfect car for our teenager to get around in.

Vehicle year: 2003
I came across this car on the lot and was immediately drawn to its appearance. Despite being used, it had only clocked about 8000 miles, so it felt almost new. During the test drive, I found the car to be quite impressive. However, the dealer was not willing to negotiate on the price. Nonetheless, the car's sleek design and agility made it easy for me to navigate through traffic. Unfortunately, the upholstery did not hold up well and started to tear after just 1500 miles. Additionally, the car has a lot of plastic components, and I have had to replace three wheel covers due to cracks. There was also a recall for the directional lights, which I had to replace three times in just six months. Lastly, I have experienced some issues with the door locks, and after opening the trunk on a rainy day, water dripped down my back.

Vehicle year: 2000
I bought this car back in 1999 and have had it for almost four years now. During this time, I have had to replace the battery, get F & R brake jobs, buy 2 sets of tires, and install new T-stats. Although this car tends to heat up during hard pulls in hot weather and even runs over half hot in cold weather, I have had no major problems with it. It still gets good gas mileage, handles great, and is good in snow too. While it could be a little more comfortable, it seems to be on par with many other cars in its category. I make sure to keep the transmission fluid up and change the oil every 2k, using synthetic oil for better performance. Overall, I am very satisfied with this car and would definitely buy another one. For the price, it's a real winner!

Vehicle year: 1995
I noticed that there are some negative reviews about this car, and I can understand why. However, I personally love this car despite having had some bad experiences with similar Pontiacs in the past. The only significant expense I had was $1000 to fix rust in the gas tank. Other than that, I only need to add oil once every 4 months and let it burn off. I bought it for $1000 with the intention of using it until I could afford a new one, but it's still going strong with no major issues. :)

Vehicle year: 2004
This car has been a reliable and speedy ride, with no complaints until recently. Despite being hit on the left hand panel, it held up like a tank with no internal damage. However, the speedometer recently malfunctioned, indicating a speed of 110 mph, which turned out to be a common issue with the panel cluster. While this problem has turned the car into a money pit, it is still a fast and dependable vehicle when it is running smoothly. Overall, this car has proven to be a great choice, but it is important to address any issues promptly to avoid further complications.

Your 2004 Sunfire has almost 100,000kms and has proven to be a reliable and fuel-efficient car. While it may not offer luxury or top-notch build quality, it gets you from A to B with ease. The gas mileage is great both in the city and on the highway. Although there was an issue with the struts within the first year of ownership, there have been no problems with the transmission or engine. The 4 cyl engine is peppy and provides good passing power with the automatic transmission. Overall, it's a practical and efficient car that serves its purpose well.

Vehicle year: 2000
This car looked great when I first started shopping for cars, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a much bigger headache than it was worth. Over the course of three years, I had to replace five factory stereos, two strut mounts, two wheel bearings, both wiper motors, and the windshield washer reservoir. Despite reaching out to Pontiac for help, they did little to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, several other people I know who owned these cars also reported poor ratings, including a blown engine at just 50,000km. Despite proper maintenance being performed on all of these vehicles, they were just poorly made and couldn't hold their resale value. In comparison, my 23-year-old full-size 6-cylinder van gets better mileage. I would recommend staying away from them!
