The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

Common Pontiac Sunfire problems

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car produced by General Motors from 1995 to 2005. While some owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle, others have reported common problems related to the engine, electrical system, brakes, lights, and windows.

Engine issues are a significant concern for Sunfire owners. The 2002 Sunfire, for example, has been reported to have engine problems with 35 complaints out of 11 model years. One common issue is a blown head gasket, which is a common problem among GM brands, including Pontiac. This issue can lead to engine overheating and reduced performance.

The electrical system is another area where Sunfire owners have reported problems. The 2002 Sunfire has 33 electrical complaints, with issues such as power window mechanisms breaking due to cheap plastic parts. Power window problems have been reported for various model years, including the 2002, 2003, and 2005 models.

Brakes are another area where Sunfire owners have reported problems. The 1998 Sunfire, for example, has been reported to have brake slippage issues, with six complaints out of 11 model years. Brakes are a critical safety feature in any vehicle, and brake problems can lead to significant safety risks.

Lights are another area where Sunfire owners have reported problems. The 2002 Sunfire, for example, has been reported to have issues with headlights, tail lights, and daytime running lights. These issues can lead to reduced visibility and safety risks, particularly when driving at night or in poor weather conditions.

Windows are another area where Sunfire owners have reported problems. The 2002 Sunfire, for example, has been reported to have power window problems, with 11 complaints out of 11 model years. These issues can be inconvenient and can lead to safety risks, particularly when driving with the windows down in traffic or in poor weather conditions.

In summary, the Pontiac Sunfire has been reported to have common problems related to the engine, electrical system, brakes, lights, and windows. These issues can lead to inconvenience, reduced performance, and safety risks. It is essential for Sunfire owners to address these issues promptly to ensure the safe and reliable operation of their vehicles.

Pontiac Sunfire

How many miles can you put on a Pontiac Sunfire?

good maintenance should get it to 300k.

How long do Pontiac engines last?

You should have no problem exceeding 200K with your Bonnevile. I say this mainly because it has the 3.8 engine which is pretty much bulletproof. Just keep up all scheduled maintenance and the Pontiac will be around for years to come. Make sure the transmission is maintained as well.

What happened to Pontiac Sunfire?

The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

Pontiac Sunfire 2005
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
  • Date Complaint: 2022-06-22
  • VIN: 3G2JB14F45S
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: None of the gauges work properly Gm has not issued a recall despite the numerous complaints and it is a 500 to 800 dollar repair bill to replace the instrument cluster. 2005 Sunfire and the instrument cluster is malfunctioning. The gas gauge has stopped working altogether and the temp and rpm gauge work erratically. This is definitely a recall issue and has nothing to do with the maintenance of the vehicle. Gm wants me to have a dealer check the vehicle when they are well aware of this issue as there are multiple posting from owners of this issue online.

  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 2004 PONTIAC SUNFIRE, I HAD TO HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT IN ORDER FOR IT TO GO STRAIGHT. I THOUGHT I MIGHT NEED A FRONT END ALIGNMENT AND DROPPED THE CAR OFF AT MY NEIGHBORHOOD FIRESTONE DEALER THAT NORMALLY WORKS ON MY CARS. AFTER CHECKING THE CAR, THEY CALLED ME AND SAID THE FRAME OF THE CAR WAS RUSTED OUT AND IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR, THEY GAVE ME PICTURES OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME WHICH ALL READY HAD CRACKED APART DUE TO THE RUST. THEY SAID IF YOU HIT A POTHOLE OR ANYTHING IN THE ROAD THE FRAME COULD SPLIT APART AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I CALLED A BODY SHOP TO SEE IF IT COULD BE REPAIRED AND THEY SAID IT WAS TO BIG OF A JOB.. THEY RECOMMENDED JUNKING THE CAR.. THIS CAR IS IN REAL GOOD SHAPE EXCEPT FOR THIS MAJOR DEFECT. THIS HAS FORCED ME TO BUY ANOTHER CAR.. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE QUALITY OF YOUR PRODUCT. I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM.

Latest negative Pontiac Sunfire car reviews

  1. Hubert Vandervort 2025-02-20

    Vehicle year: 2000

The Sunfire started off as a great little car, but unfortunately, I had a few issues with it. Within two years, I had to replace the transmission and ignition switch. I had to fix the switch three times, and each time it broke down, leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere. Even though the ignition switch was under warranty, it kept breaking down. I ended up spending as much on repairs as I did on the car itself, which was frustrating. However, I was fortunate enough to trade it in for a Cherokee. While it did get decent gas mileage for a commuter, the constant worry of being stranded made it not worth it. I would not recommend purchasing this car.

  2. Ralph Lemke 2025-02-16

    Vehicle year: 2005

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought a 2005 Sunfire with 28k miles on it, even though it had a salvage title due to an accident. After a year and 16k more miles, I'm happy to say that my Sunfire is still running great! It's been taking me to work all week, and my job is 18 miles from home. Plus, I only had to spend $15 on gas! :)

  3. Colin Pagac 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2000

This car has been a great investment for me. I bought it almost new and have put 110K on it over the past 6 years. Despite some recent starter trouble, which was quickly resolved, I have had almost no issues with it. It still gets an average of 28 mpg and travels well at 60+. Although it's not the best car for snowy conditions, it has served me well in upstate NY. I'm not particularly attached to it, but it has been reliable and fun to drive. Overall, it has been a great little car for my needs.

  4. Tyler Runte 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 2002

I really enjoy driving this car. If you know how to drive a stick shift, you can easily pass BMWs or Lexuses as if they were standing still. Some people complain about body roll, but if you're careful and avoid taking the inside lane, you'll be just fine. Plus, when you show up with nice wheels and tinted windows, you don't need an $80,000 car to impress the ladies.

I purchased this car from my uncle a month ago. He works on cars frequently and is just as skilled as a mechanic. Unfortunately, the first day I got the car, it wouldn't start, even though the lights and radio were still working (weird, right?). Despite having half a tank of gas, I had to take it to Cole Muffler and pay around $400 for a new starter and battery. I felt like I got ripped off and wouldn't recommend Cole Muffler due to their high prices. Although I only paid $850 for the car itself, I had to spend an additional $400 to get it running again. To make matters worse, it died on me again a week later, but after having it towed to Cole Muffler again, it started without any repairs. It's been over two weeks now and it seems to be running fine.

I've been driving my 98 Pontiac Sunfire for 5 years now and it's been great! When I bought it, it only had 48,000 miles on it and now I'm hitting about 150,000 miles without any mechanical problems. If you're looking for a reliable car, I highly recommend a Pontiac Sunfire or any Pontiac.

We purchased this car almost new and it has been a reliable vehicle for us. Although it has been in several accidents, it has held up well. In one instance, it was t-boned by a Mercedes and sustained only a small split under the bra, while the Mercedes was destroyed. In another instance, it was rear-ended by a Honda Accord, which was completely totaled, but the SunFire only had a scratch on the rear bumper. Lastly, it hit a deer and sustained a small dent in the front fender, which was mostly fixed. The only mechanical repairs that have been made were to the starter and head gasket, in addition to regular maintenance items such as brakes and plugs. It performs well in both summer and winter conditions.

I bought my car brand new back in 2002 because I absolutely loved the body style and color. I have been driving it ever since and I must say, I have never had any major problems with it, just regular maintenance. I recently had to replace the brake hose, but that's to be expected with a car that has 189,000 miles on it. There is a small surface rust spot about the size of a silver dollar, but I have always taken pride in my cars and have taken good care of them. It's just a shame that I won't be able to get a new one when I have to trade this one in, but at least I already have a buyer waiting. Thank you for taking the time to read about my car!

Absolutely a blast to cruise around in! I got mine with the Sun & Sound Package. I wish I had gotten the GT, but the SE Coupe is just as nice. The peppy engine is not a race car, but it's perfect for high school, college, and other 20-somethings...

I'm so glad I got this car at 120,000 miles because it's still running strong at 150,000 miles! It's a beast in all weather conditions, and I can easily get through a foot of snow with great handling. Plus, it gets decent gas mileage at 24-27 mpg. I've only had to perform minor repairs like the exhaust, shocks, oil changes, and spark plugs. The A/C is ice cold, and the engine warms up quickly on cold days. When I first got it, the two lowest fan blower settings didn't work, but it was an easy fix by replacing the blower motor resistor. The trunk is roomy enough to fit my Tuba with some extra space. While it may not be the fastest car in the world (I could only get it up to 105), it definitely gets me where I need to go. The seats are also very comfortable for long road trips.
