1998 Pontiac Sunfire problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

Common 1998 Pontiac Sunfire problems

The 1998 Pontiac Sunfire is known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine, electrical system, brakes, and lights.

One of the most frequently reported issues is a rough idle, which can be caused by various factors. Some owners have reported replacing spark plugs, plug wires, and coils, but the problem persists. This could indicate a more complex issue, such as a faulty mass airflow sensor or a vacuum leak.

Another common problem is difficulty starting the engine, which can be caused by a variety of factors. Some owners have reported that their engines fail to start or stall immediately after starting, accompanied by a buzzing noise from the steering column area. This could be due to a faulty ignition switch or a problem with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump.

The Sunfire's engine is also prone to misfiring and head gasket leaks, which can cause a loss of power and poor performance. In some cases, the engine may need to be replaced entirely.

The electrical system in the Sunfire can also cause problems, such as turn signal switches failing and causing signals not to work. This can be a safety hazard and should be addressed as soon as possible.

The brakes in the Sunfire are also known to slip, which can be caused by worn-out brake pads or a faulty brake system. This can be a serious safety issue and should be addressed immediately.

The lights in the Sunfire can also cause problems, such as headlights or taillights not working properly. This can be a safety hazard and should be addressed as soon as possible.

In summary, the 1998 Pontiac Sunfire has several common problems related to its engine, electrical system, brakes, and lights. Owners should be aware of these issues and address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

  • VIN: 1G2JB5248W7
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: APPARENTLY, THEIR IS A KNOWN ISSUE W/THE 98 PONTIAC SUNFIRE STEERING RACK AND PINION GEAR MAKING IT FEEL LIKE THEIR IS A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING, EVEN THOUGH THE POWER STEERING PUMP IS WORKING PROPERLY. I PURCHASED THIS CAR IN JANUARY OF 2011 OFF A LITTLE OLD LADY, WHO KEPT IT IN A GARAGE AND BARELY DROVE IT, THE CAR ONLY HAD 51,000 MILES ON IT. SHE ADVISED THAT SHE DIDN'T KNOW OF ANY RECALLS, SO SHE DIDN'T TAKE IT IN FOR ANY OF THE RECALL REPAIRS. I HAVE CHECK THE NHTSA WEBSITE AS WELL AS SEVERAL OTHER REPUTABLE SITES AND HAVE FOUND THEIR HAVE BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE. HOWEVER, UPON CALLING PONTIACS RECALL HOTLINE, THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT THESE RECALLS ON YOUR WEBSITE NEVER EXISTED FOR MY 98 PONTIAC SUNFIRE AND WENT ON TO SAY THAT YOU CAN BELIEVE EVERY THING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET (HOW FUNNY, YOUR AVERAGE MORON COULD HAVE FIGURED THAT OUT). BUT REGARDLESS, IT APPEARS THAT PONTIAC IS SAYING THAT THEY WILL NOT FIX THESE RECALLS. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND LET ME KNOW IF MY CONCERNS ARE LEGITIMATE. I DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR A REPAIR, WHEN THE CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED UNDER THEIR RECALL. THANKS. *TR

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-14
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I OWN A 1998 PONTIAC SUNFIRE. THE FAILURE IS WITH THE HEADLIGHTS/DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS. .. THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS WORK FINE, BUT AT NIGHT, WHEN I TWIST THE LEVER TO TURN THE HEADLIGHTS ON, ONLY MY DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS STAY ON AND MY HEADLIGHTS REMAIN AT ABOUT 1/2 BRIGHTNESS AND THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS INDICATOR STAYS ON. (IN OTHERWORDS, NO CHANGE IN THE BEAMS...) BUT THEN WHEN I EVER SO SLIGHTLY PULL THE LEVER BACK TO GO TO FLASH MY HEADLIGHTS, THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS INDICATOR DISAPPEARS AND MY HEADLIGHTS BRIGHTEN TO "NORMAL, NIGHTTIME BRIGHTNESS, THEN IF I PULL LEVER BACK TOWARDS ME EVEN FARTHER, THE HIGHBEAMS COME ON)... BUT THE PROBLEM IS... THE LEVER WON'T STAY ON EITHER NIGHTTIME OR HIGH BEAM MODES AT ALL. ONCE I LET GO OF THE LEVER IT RETURNS TO DAYTIME RUNNINGLIGHTS, EVEN WITH THE LEVER TWISTED ALL THE WAY TO HAVE THE HEADLIGHTS ON.... I STILL ONLY GET THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS (DRL)... . ON OCCASION THE HEADLIGHTS WORK OK TO BEGIN WITH, BUT AS I AM DRIVING THE "NORMAL" LIGHTS CLICK BACK OFF AND ITS ONLY THE DRL THAT ARE ON. ITS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE NIGHTIME TAIL LIGHTS ARE NOT ON WHEN THE DRL ARE ONLY ON. I ALSO HAVE A FRIEND WITH A 97 PONTIAC SUNFIRE AND SHE IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HER DRL/ AND HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE NOT YET CORRECTED THE PROBLEM, AND I HAVE RESEARCHED IT ON THE INTERNET AND OTHERS SEEM TO BE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.

  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START AND THE DRIVER HOLDS THE KEY IN THE "START" POSITION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD, HIGH CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND SOMETIMES PRODUCES ENOUGH HEAT TO MELT INTERNAL SWITCH PARTS.
  • Consequence: IF THE SWITCH IS DAMAGED, A FIRE COULD OCCUR IN THE STEERING COLUMN, EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED. THE FIRE COULD SPREAD TO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, WHICH COULD INJURE OCCUPANTS OR CAUSE DAMAGE TO ADJOINING STRUCTURES.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY KIT IN THESE VEHICLES TO PREVENT HIGH CURRENT FROM FLOWING THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND CHECK THAT YOUR CAR WILL START WITH A PROPERLY CHARGED BATTERY AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BEGIN ON MARCH 1, 2004. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CHECK THEIR VEHICLE ONLINE BY GOING TO WWW.MYGMLINK.COM AND ENTERING THE VEHICLE'S IDENTIFICATION NUMBER.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MINI VANS HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE AND SOME OTHER RETAINERS USED IN VEHICLES ASSEMBLED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 1996 AND OCTOBER 31, 1997, COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JANUARY 24, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.

  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE WHEEL LUG NUTS WERE NOT TIGHTENED SECURELY RESULTING IN A FRACTURE OF THE WHEEL STUDS.
  • Consequence: THE WHEEL COULD SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE. IF THE VEHICLE WERE IN MOTION, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD RESULT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TORQUE OF ALL WHEEL NUTS AND, IF NECESSARY, TIGHTEN ANY THAT MAY BE BELOW REQUIRED TORQUE.

Negative 1998 Pontiac Sunfire car reviews

This has been my first 'real' car and it has been pretty good to me. I have had no major problems until last year when the A/C compressor failed at 105k. Recently, I had to replace the clutch and the water pump at 120k. Unfortunately, I have not received good service from the Pontiac dealer. My only complaint with the styling is the cupholders. The ONE in front sits too close to the gearshift and when shifting into 5th gear, I always hit whatever cup is sitting there - it gets pretty annoying. It does not handle well in heavy rain or wind, let alone icy conditions. But overall, I have been pretty happy with it for the price.

I would definitely recommend this car! It was actually my first 'adult' car after college and I've had it for 10 years now, with only some usual repairs and minimal expenses since it was paid off 4-5 years ago. It's perfect for one person or a college student, but might be a bit small for a grown man or more than 3 people. I absolutely love the trunk space and the radio buttons on the steering wheel. The stereo also has great sound quality. The only thing that could be improved is the cup holder, as many others have mentioned. By the way, it currently has around 147k miles on it.

I really love the stereo system, it sounds so professional even though it's not. I've had very few mechanical problems with it, even after driving 104K miles. However, there are a few things that I don't like about it. For example, the cruise control on the 98 model is a bit messed up. The chain sticks and unfortunately, it's one of the few recalls that they haven't figured out yet. Once you set it at a certain speed, it gets stuck and you can't set it lower than that speed again.

This was my first car purchase and I have had it for 6 years now. While it has had some issues, overall it has served me well. Unfortunately, I had an accident with a deer while going about 15mph which caused significant damage to the front fender, driver's side a-arm, and front clip. Additionally, the master brake cylinder has had severe issues and I have had to replace it 3 times, but it still shorts out. The gas mileage is not great, and a lifted pickup with a 350 gets better mileage. However, I have learned a lot from this experience and will keep it in mind for future purchases.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had no problems with your car for the past four years! It's true that routine maintenance is key to keeping any vehicle running smoothly. Although the car is quite small and not everyone may want to sit in the back seat, it's great to hear that it's still running well even after 115,000 miles.

This car is amazing! As a 53-year-old, I absolutely love the sleek look and fun ride it provides. Although the ride could be smoother, it's still a great car overall. I've had very few repairs, just brakes and tires once, and the alternator, battery, and plugs once at 60 thousand miles. Other than that, just regular oil changes. It's been a great car to own and drive!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 1998 Sunfire. I've had it for about 2.5 years now and overall, it's been a great car! I did have a couple of issues with the alternator and transmission, but thankfully they were both replaced under warranty. I also received a recall notice, but that was the only one. The ABS brakes have been a bit of a problem, but the dealership assures me that they're working properly. All in all, I'm really happy with my Sunfire. I spend at least 2 hours in it every day, so it's like a second home to me. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable ride. Plus, it gets great gas mileage - mine gets about 25 mpg or more! Thanks for listening.

This car is excellent! I've only had it for a year, but it's been great. I'm from Panama and there are lots of them here, but I'm another happy owner. Thank you, Pontiac!

  4. Willis Kunde 2024-10-08

I love this car! It's been a couple of years since I got mine and I haven't had many issues with it. The exterior design is fantastic. It's such a sleek car and it's great for me to drive.

Hey there! I just wanted to share that I no longer have this car, but I still miss it every day. It was actually my first real car purchase! The only issues I had were with the plug wires, which went bad around 45,000 miles. I was pretty upset about that. My partner also had a bad hydroplaning incident, but that was due to the cheap tires we had at the time. Unfortunately, I ended up getting into an accident where I rear-ended someone when I tapped the gas from a stop, and the whole front of the car buckled. That's the only reason I had to get rid of it.
