The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.
At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

- Summary: WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN OCTOBER OF 2000 IT HAD TO KEEP GOING BACK TO THE DEALER FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS BECAUSE THE ENGINE IN THE CAR KEPT CUTTING OUT WHILE DRIVING AROUND 55-60 MPH. DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. FINALLY AFTER THE 3RD MONTH THEY FOUND THE MAIN COMPUTER WAS BAD. THAT WAS REPLACED. IT RAN FINE UNTIL THE NEXT WINTER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON & CAR KEPT STALLING WHEN AT STOP SIGNS/LIGHTS. TOOK TO DEALER HAD DIAGNOSTIC RAN WHICH READ FAULTY GAS CAP, TPS SENSOR.... I REPLACED THEM MYSELF. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OUT TILL THE NEXT DAY. TOOK CAR BACK IN FOR DIAGNOSTIC WHICH READ FAULTY GAS CAP, TPS SENSOR,EGR ,COIL PACKS,GAS TANK SENSOR.....HAD DEALER WORK ON IT.... THEY COULD NOT SEE WHY ALL THIS STUFF WAS POPPING UP ....HAD IT ALL REPLACED. REPLACING IT DID NOT WORK. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN ABOUT 2 DAYS LATER!!! I CHECKED CAR OVER & FOUND IF YOU WIGGLED THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS CONNECTIONS THE CAR RAN FINE & ENGINE LIGHT WENT OUT! TOOK TO DEALER TO HAVE WIRING FIXED. THEY TOOK ALL THE WIRING APART & CLEANED EVERYTHING. THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM IN THE WIRING. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON NEXT DAY.TOOK TO DEALER AGAIN FINALLY THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW BATTERY..... WEATHER WAS NICE AGAIN & HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH CAR.... NOW THAT WINTER IS HERE AGAIN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN , DIAGNOSTIC STATED TPS SENSOR WAS BAD... - Consequence: IF THE SWITCH IS DAMAGED, A FIRE COULD OCCUR IN THE STEERING COLUMN, EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED. THE FIRE COULD SPREAD TO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, WHICH COULD INJURE OCCUPANTS OR CAUSE DAMAGE TO ADJOINING STRUCTURES.

- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. This car is amazing! As a 53-year-old, I absolutely love the sleek look and fun ride it provides. Although the ride could be smoother, it's still a great car overall. I've had very few repairs, just brakes and tires once, and the alternator, battery, and plugs once at 60 thousand miles. Other than that, just regular oil changes. It's been a great car to own and drive!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 1998 Sunfire. I've had it for about 2.5 years now and overall, it's been a great car! I did have a couple of issues with the alternator and transmission, but thankfully they were both replaced under warranty. I also received a recall notice, but that was the only one. The ABS brakes have been a bit of a problem, but the dealership assures me that they're working properly. All in all, I'm really happy with my Sunfire. I spend at least 2 hours in it every day, so it's like a second home to me. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable ride. Plus, it gets great gas mileage - mine gets about 25 mpg or more! Thanks for listening.

Hey there! I just wanted to share that I no longer have this car, but I still miss it every day. It was actually my first real car purchase! The only issues I had were with the plug wires, which went bad around 45,000 miles. I was pretty upset about that. My partner also had a bad hydroplaning incident, but that was due to the cheap tires we had at the time. Unfortunately, I ended up getting into an accident where I rear-ended someone when I tapped the gas from a stop, and the whole front of the car buckled. That's the only reason I had to get rid of it.

This has been my first 'real' car and it has been pretty good to me. I have had no major problems until last year when the A/C compressor failed at 105k. Recently, I had to replace the clutch and the water pump at 120k. Unfortunately, I have not received good service from the Pontiac dealer. My only complaint with the styling is the cupholders. The ONE in front sits too close to the gearshift and when shifting into 5th gear, I always hit whatever cup is sitting there - it gets pretty annoying. It does not handle well in heavy rain or wind, let alone icy conditions. But overall, I have been pretty happy with it for the price.

I would definitely recommend this car! It was actually my first 'adult' car after college and I've had it for 10 years now, with only some usual repairs and minimal expenses since it was paid off 4-5 years ago. It's perfect for one person or a college student, but might be a bit small for a grown man or more than 3 people. I absolutely love the trunk space and the radio buttons on the steering wheel. The stereo also has great sound quality. The only thing that could be improved is the cup holder, as many others have mentioned. By the way, it currently has around 147k miles on it.

I really love the stereo system, it sounds so professional even though it's not. I've had very few mechanical problems with it, even after driving 104K miles. However, there are a few things that I don't like about it. For example, the cruise control on the 98 model is a bit messed up. The chain sticks and unfortunately, it's one of the few recalls that they haven't figured out yet. Once you set it at a certain speed, it gets stuck and you can't set it lower than that speed again.

This was my first car purchase and I have had it for 6 years now. While it has had some issues, overall it has served me well. Unfortunately, I had an accident with a deer while going about 15mph which caused significant damage to the front fender, driver's side a-arm, and front clip. Additionally, the master brake cylinder has had severe issues and I have had to replace it 3 times, but it still shorts out. The gas mileage is not great, and a lifted pickup with a 350 gets better mileage. However, I have learned a lot from this experience and will keep it in mind for future purchases.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had no problems with your car for the past four years! It's true that routine maintenance is key to keeping any vehicle running smoothly. Although the car is quite small and not everyone may want to sit in the back seat, it's great to hear that it's still running well even after 115,000 miles.
