1999 Pontiac Sunfire problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-11-14
  • VIN: 4G2JB32T8XB
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING THE CAR JUST AFTER I PURCHASED IT AND BECAME COLD SO I TURNED ON THE HEATER AND WITHIN 30 SECONDS SMOKE FILLED THE CAR. I THOUGHT THE ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. IT SMELLED LIKE BURNING OIL OR GAS. I CALLED DELPHI ABOUT RECALLS AND BEFORE I COULD FINISH A SENTENCE THE MAN CUT ME OFF SAYING THAT THE ONLY RECALL ON MY CAR WAS FOR THE O RING ON THE FUEL. HE SAID IF I HAVE A 1999 AND THAT WAS DEFECTIVE I WOULD BE SPEWING FUEL EVERYWHERE. I DESCRIBED WHAT HAPPENED AND HE JUST CUT ME OFF. MY BROTHER PURCHASED THE CAR FROM A DEALER FOR OVER 3,000 DOLLARS AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE ODOMETER IS SUPPOSE TO BE BECAUSE HE SAID THE DEALER TOLD HIM TO BRING IT BACK AND HE WOULD FIX IT. AFTER HE PAID THE DEALER HE CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THE DEALER TOLD HIM THAT HE WILL CONTACT MY BROTHER WHEN HE CAN FIX IT. ACCORDING TO THE ODOMETER IT HAS A LITTLE OVER 23,000 MILES. I ALSO NOTICED THE HEADLIGHTS KEEP GOING OUT AND THERE IS YELLOW HOT WIRE HANGING OUT OF THE FUSE BOX. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO SAFELY MANEUVER TO THE SHOULDER AND SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V036000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 86,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-10-22
  • VIN: 3G2JB1240XS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL ON MY 1999 PONTIAC SUNFIRE RECENTLY STARTED FUNCTIONING ERRATICALLY I.E. GAUGES (GAS GAUGE, TEMPERATURE GAUGE, SPEEDOMETER) WOULD START FLUCTUATING WILDLY. LOCAL PONTIAC DEALERSHIP HAS DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE AS HAVING A DEFECTIVE (OR BURNED OUT) INSTRUMENTAL PANEL CLUSTER. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS COMPONENT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY TYPE OF LIFETIME WARRANTY AND THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD COST $472.31. IN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, IT APPEARS TO BE SYSTEMIC AMONG LATE 1990 TO EARLY 2000 PONTIAC VEHICLES. FROM A SAFETY STANDPOINT, IT IS A DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCE TO BE DRIVING 70-75 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND TO HAVE YOUR INSTRUMENT PANEL START MALFUNCTIONING. PONTIAC SHOULD BE FORCED TO RECALL THESE DEFECTIVE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTERS AND REPAIR THEM AT NO CHARGE. *KB

THE WIRING HARNESS AT THE DRIVERS DOOR FRAME, AT THE CONNECTION OF THE UNDERDASH HARNESS AND THE REAR OF VEHICLE HARNESS SHORTED, CAUSING THE INSULATION TO CATCH FIRE. THIS SITUATION SHORTED OTHER CIRCUITS IN THE HARNESS CAUSING BRAKING PROBLEMS WITH THE ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM. VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE STOPPED SAFELY, AND THE DRIVER, WITH GOOD SAMARITAN ASSISTANCE WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. FIRE RENDERED THE HOOD LATCH INOPERATIVE. THIS PREVENTED THE DRIVER FROM DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE, TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE AND/OR FIRE. *TR

STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-07-25
  • VIN: 1G2NE52T6XM
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE 1999 PONTIAC GRAND AM - POSSIBLY THE WORST CAR EVER MADE. AT 30,000 MILES, THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED. AT 40,000 MILES, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS REPLACED. RECALLS REPLACED THE STEERING WHEEL & CENTER CONSOLE, AND OTHER RECALLS HAVE BEEN MADE. AT 50,000 MILES THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED AGAIN. SHORTLY AFTER THE WARRANTY RAN, MAJOR ENGINE PROBLEMS CAUSED A $2,500 COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. UNDER 90,000 MILES, THE GAS GAUGE STOPPED WORKING AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS NEEDED REWIRING. NOW, UNDER 92,000 MILES A NEW PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL: THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY, THE TRUNK POPS OPEN ON ITS OWN, THE AIRBAG COMES ON AND OFF, THE CAR ONLY STARTS RANDOMLY, AND WORST OF ALL IT SHUTS OFF ALL ON ITS OWN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, SO YET AGAIN WE ARE FORCED TO HAVE DIAGNOSTICS RUN TO FIGURE OUT WHAT NEW AND COSTLY REPAIRS WILL NEED TO BE MADE. PONTIAC/GM SHOULD ADMIT THEY MADE A MISTAKE WITH THE GRAND AM/OLDSMOBILE ALERO AND PAY ALL THE CURRENT OWNERS SOME $$ AND TAKE ALL THE CARS TO A JUNK YARD. THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA COMPLETELY RECALLED THESE CARS FOR THE CITIZENS OF CANADA, YET IN THE U.S. IT'S THE UNFORTUNATE OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES WHO ARE GETTING TAKEN. DO WHAT I AM DOING AND CONTACT YOUR LOCAL BBB, STATE AG, OR ANY OTHER POLITICAL OFFICE (IN ADDITION TO PONTIAC/GM) AND LET THEM KNOW WHAT PIECES OF CRAP THE 99 GRAND AM/ALERO ARE. I HAVE TALKED TO MANY REPAIR SHOPS AND OTHER OWNERS OF THE CAR, AND BY FAR EVERYONE SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT TYPES OF MAJOR PROBLEMS THIS CAR HAS BEEN. WHAT OTHER CAR MANUFACTURER WOULD ALLOW SO MANY PROBLEMS TO EXIST (SUCH AS CAR COMPLETELY SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING) AND HAVE THE GALL TO SAY NOTHING IS WRONG WITH IT? *TR

  • Summary: MY HEADLIGHTS DO NOT STAY ON. THEY TURN OFF WHEN I USE MY TURN SIGNAL, OR IF I HIT A BUMP. THE HI-BEAMS AND DRL'S ARE FINE, IT'S JUST THE REGULAR HEADLIGHTS. ALSO MY ENGINE SHOWS THAT IT IS OVERHEATING ON MY TEMP. GUAGE, BUT DOES NOT ACT LIKE IT. WHEN THE A/C IS TURNED ON, IT RETURNS TO A NORMAL LEVEL. ANOTHER THING IS MY AIRCONDITIONING LINE HAS A HOLE IN IT FROM ANOTHER HOSE RUBBING UP AGAINST IT. I THINK IT'S EITHER MY STEERING HOSE OR RADIATOR HOSE. WHEN I TURN LEFT MY CAR MAKES AN AWFUL GRINDING NOISE.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-04
  • VIN: 1G2JB1243X7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR PUMP (A/C PUMP) COMES INTO CONTACT WITH THE (1999) OEM LOWER RADIATOR HOSE (HOSE), DENTING THE HOSE AND WEARING A HOLE IN THE HOSE OVER TIME. THIS CONDITION IS WORSE WHEN FRONT STRUTS AND/OR ENGINE MOUNTS BECOME WORN. INITIAL LEAK OF COOLENT IS ONLY DETECTABLE BY LOW FLUID LEVEL OVER EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME (APPORXIMATELY 6 MONTHS TO A YEAR): NO WETNESS ON THE HOSE OR POOLING OF COOLENT FLUID UNDER THE VEHICLE IS DETECTABLE PRIOR TO A LARGER HOLE BEING WORN INTO THE HOSE. PRIOR TO LARGER HOLE BEING WORN INTO HOSE, COOLENT LOSS IS IN VAPOR FORM, BUT NOT IN A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT TO BE SEEN. ONCE THE HOLE IN THE HOSE BECOMES LARGE ENOUGH TO BE DETECTED BY FLUID POOLING UNDER THE VEHICLE, THE COOLENT FLUID WILL COME IN CONTACT WITH THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) AND CAUSE FAILURE OF THE PCM. THE PCM CONTROLS MAJOR ENGINE AND BRAKING FUNCTIONS. A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE PCM WILL CAUSE LOSS OF BRAKING CONTROL (VIA ABS) AND SHUT DOWN OF ENGINE (CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL). THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF CAUSING A ELECTRIC SHORT IN THE 12 VOLT CIRCUIT RESULTING IN A FIRE. PLEASE NOTE THAT "AFTER MARKET" MANUFACTURERS REPLACEMENT HOSE IS REDESIGNED TO HELP PREVENT CONTACT BETWEEN A/C PUMP AND THE HOSE. AT THE TIME OF THIS COMPLAINT IT IS UNKNOWN WHETHER THE OEM HOSE HAS BEEN REDESIGN TO PREVENT CONTACT WITH THE A/C PUMP.

  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,PARKING BRAKE,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VISIBILITY,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: BEFORE THE FAILURE OF MY BRAKES FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS I HAD THIS NOISE EVER SO OFTEN AND SLIPPING FEELING WHEN BRAKING. I ALSO STARTED TO HAVE BAD TRACTION ACCORDING TO MY TRACTION LIGHT AND MY ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AFTER EITHER GOING OVER RAILROAD TRACKS OR TURNING A RIGHT HAND TURN OR HITTING A POT HOLE. I WOULD THEN HAVE TO RESTART MY CAR TO GET RID OF THE MESSAGES ON THE DASH TELLING ME WHAT WAS WRONG. I HAD THEM CHECK AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND NEW BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS WHERE PUT ON ALL THE WAY AROUND ALONG WITH NEW TIRES. THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. I HAVE ALSO LOST MY EMERGENCY BRAKE IN THE PAST 2 WEEKS BUT I HAVEN'T HAD IT LOOKED AT YET AND HEARD THAT IT MIGHT NEED TIGHTENED. I ONLY BOUGHT HIS VEHICLE RECENTLY AND IT DOES HAVE OTHER MINOR PROBLEMS THAT I HEAR SO MANY GRAND AM OWNERS HAVE. LIKE THE LOOSE RIGHT SIDE VIEW MIRROR AND THE VOLUME DIAL ON THE RADIO AND THE INABILITY TO TURN OFF THE RADIO ITSELF ALSO ALONG WITH THE # 1 AND 2 ON THE A/C...AND HEATER DO NOT WORK. I FOUND THIS TO BE TRUE IN MORE THAN A DOZEN GRAND AMS I LOOKED AT OVER THE PERIOD OF TIME I WAS LOOKING FOR A NEW VEHICLE AND I THINK SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.... *NM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-04-12
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE GM PASSLOCK SYSTEM. RECENTLY, IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE. IN THE PAST 5 DAYS IT HAS MALFUNCTIONED 1-2 TIMES A DAY. WHEN I AM DRIVING, THE SECURITY LIGHT COMES ON AND I KNOW FROM MY MANUAL THAT IT MEANS THERE IS A PROBLEM. OTHER TIMES IT CUTS THE FUEL SUPPLY AND I AM STRANDED. I DON'T THINK IT IS SAFE FOR A YOUNG FEMALE TO BE STUCK SOMEWHERE WHERE HER VEHICLE WON'T START. WHAT IF THERE WAS A DANGEROUS SITUATION OR AN EMERGENCY? IT HAS MADE ME LATE TO CLASSES AND TO WORK. I DID NOT REALIZE THAT OTHERS WERE HAVING A PROBLEM UNTIL I LOOKED IT UP ON THE INTERNET. IT REALLY SHOCKED ME THAT MANY OTHERS WERE HAVING TO DEAL WITH THIS. I THOUGHT I JUST BOUGHT A DEFECTIVE CAR. I HAVE TO LOOK INTO DISABLING THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO TRY TO FIX IT. AND FROM THE SOUND OF IT IS NOT ALWAYS A GUARANTEE. I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT WHO WORKS PART TIME; I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO DEAL WITH THIS. NOR DO I FEEL I SHOULD IF MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING. I FEEL THAT GM SHOULD RECALL OR REIMBURSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DEFECTIVE SYSTEMS. IT IS REALLY A PAIN IN NECK TO HAVE TO ADD THIS PROBLEM TO SCHOOL WORK AND WORK ISSUES, ETC. ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS A PROBLEM THEY ARE AWARE OF. I WOULD NEVER HAVE PURCHASED THIS CAR IF I HAD KNOWN THIS WOULD BE A ISSUE. APPARENTLY, THIS IS NOT A GOOD SYSTEM TO USE SO I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY CONTINUE TO USE IT. I GUESS FOR NOW THE ONLY THING I CAN DO IS PAY TO HAVE IT DISABLED AND BE WITHOUT A SECURITY SYSTEM FOR MY VEHICLE, WHICH IS PARKED ON A CROWDED COLLEGE CAMPUS, WITH ITS SHARE OF BREAK . *AK

Negative 1999 Pontiac Sunfire car reviews

Your car has been a reliable companion for almost a decade! However, there have been some minor issues that have come up over time. For example, the car has a rust problem that is unique to Sunfires, but it hasn't affected its performance. We did have a small issue with the dashboard lights due to a rusted-out body ground from the battery cable, but it was easily fixed. The back speakers have also been a bit finicky, but we were able to resolve the issue by running new wires. Finally, we have noticed some oil consumption over the years, but it hasn't impacted the car's overall performance. We are grateful for the many years of service your car has provided us!

I've had my Sunfire for almost five years and it's been a reliable car without any major issues. Unfortunately, I recently got into an accident. Although the damage didn't look too bad, it was deemed a total loss. I was going a bit too fast for the snowy conditions and ended up sliding into a tree. Thankfully, the tree was unscathed and I wasn't hurt. It's worth noting that the body quality of the car wasn't great, as the passenger side door had several dings. Overall, I'm just grateful that the accident wasn't more serious and that I'm okay.

We bought the car brand new for around $13000, with the only option being a CD player. While we didn't experience any major issues with the motor or transmission, we did have some trouble with the A/C fan going out twice and an A/C duct coming apart when we ran the fan on high. Additionally, the paint job started to pit in 2001, with the hood covered in white dots and losing its original shine. However, we live in Florida where the sun can be brutal on paint, and we did our best to maintain it by waxing it a couple of times a year. Despite the car being a bit noisy and rattling, we still enjoyed driving it.

The car has been a great companion for the past 3 years. I'm happy to report that any major issues were covered under warranty. While it can be a bit loud and has the typical GM build quality, it's still a good value for your money.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that I purchased this car at an auction, after it had been in a serious accident. Despite that, this car is a real winner! It's been able to beat out Grand Am GT's, Grand Prix GT's, Z24's, base Mustangs, Camaros, and Firebirds. It runs great, although I did have to replace the rotors twice. Overall, I think this car is definitely worth every cent!

  2. Hyman Smitham 2024-10-15

Overall, you have a great car! It loves the cold weather, is fun to drive, handles great, and looks great. Sometimes it starts funny in hot weather, and the ABS kicks in at weird, inappropriate times.

  3. Alphonso Wintheiser 2024-10-06

This little car is truly underrated! It has never failed to start, even in the harsh Alaskan winter when it can get as cold as 20 below zero. It can seat up to 5 people, although the back seats are more comfortable for those under 5'8. One of the best things about this car is its ability to navigate through unplowed roads with 6 inches of fresh snow falling. The front wheel drive and steering combo make it easy to control, which is simply awesome. Although it doesn't have a lot of power, it still manages to get an impressive 33 mpg in town. I would definitely buy this car again in a heartbeat! It reminds me of a cross between my all-time favorite car, the 1978 Saab 900, and the old diesel rabbit. The back seats fold flat, making it a practical and feature-packed low-cost ride. It's a great car for commuting or hitting the slopes, and don't forget to get the sunroof!

  4. Keagan Farrell 2024-09-28

I purchased my car after crashing my brand new truck. It has proven to be a very reliable car. Aside from the usual wear and tear, this car has not given me any major problems like my other cars. It's great! It's affordable and has a nice sporty/family look to it. I would definitely recommend it for a small family.

I love my little red Pontiac. I'm so glad I have her, especially with gas prices on the rise. The gas mileage is great and there's nothing better than putting the top down and cruising home after a hard day at work. I think this car is really cool.
