1998 Hyundai Tiburon problems
The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.
The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.
The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-12-14
- VIN: KMHJG34F4WU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I WENT TO THE CAR LOT AND PICKED UP MY TIBURON. I DROVE IT HOME...AND TO WORK. AFTER I HAD DRIVEN THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS, I WALKED TOWARD THE CAR AND THE WIRELESS REMOTE ON THE KEYS WOULDNT BEEP SO WHEN I PUT THE KEY IN THE DOOR TO UNLOCK IT THE ALARM SOUNDED AND THE IGNITION WOULD NOT START. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED THE DEALER IN WHICH THEY SAID I PROBABLY NEEDED TO BUY A NEW BATTERY. I HADN'T EVEN PUT 100 MILES ON THE CAR. I HAD SOMEONE CHECK THE BATTERY AND THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM. MY CAR SAT AT MY WORKPLACE FOR 8 DAYS BEFORE THE DEALERSHIP FINALLY SENT A TOWING TRUCK TO HAVE IT SERVICED. I COME TO FIND OUT IT IS THE "TRANSPONDER" TO THE ALARM THAT IS FAULTY AND THEREFORE THE CAR WON'T START UNTIL IT IS REPLACED. IT IS STILL WAITING TO BE SERVICED. MY QUESTION IS WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THAT FIXED WHEN I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR A FEW DAYS? THEY PROBABLY ALREADY KNEW IT WAS GOING OUT AND SOLD ME THE CAR ANYWAY. I'VE ONLY PUT DOWN A DOWN PAYMENT FOR THE CAR AND HAVE YET TO MAKE MY FIRST PAYMENT. WHAT SHOULD I DO? ARE THEY RIGHT TO CHARGE ME FOR THIS? IS THIS A FACTORY RECALL OR SOMETHING THAT GOES OUT OVER TIME? OR IN THIS CASE RIGHT WHEN I GOT THE CAR? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS. *JB

- Summary: I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN MARCH OF 2002 AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT 6 WEEKS LATER. THE PROBLEM I WAS TOLD WAS THAT THERE WAS A "SHIFT FLARE" IN MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. I WAS SOLD THE CAR WITH THE REMAINDER OF THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY AND THEN HYUNDAI PROCEDED TO GIVE ME THE RUN AROUND FOR 4 WEEKS SAYING I NEEDED PROOF THAT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS CHANGED AT 30,00 MILES. I WAS THE SECOND OWNER AND DID NOT HAVE THAT INFO. AFTER A MONTH OF NOT HAVING MY CAR, AND CONTACTING THE BBB, AND CONSUMER REPORTS, ALONG WITH HYUNDAI DIRECTLY......I WENT TO A LAWYER AT $125 AN HOUR AND HE MADE A FEW CALLS AND I HAD A "REBUILT" TRANSMISSION IN 8 DAYS. I'VE BEEN DRIVING MY CAR FOR 3 WEEKS NOW, AND THIS "NEW" ONE IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING. THE FLARE IS BETWEEN 2 AND 3 GEAR, AND MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN COMING ON. I WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY TRANSMISSIONS I NEED TO GO THROUGH TO FIND ONE THAT REALLY "WORKS"!! I'M A 22YR. OLD FEMALE, WHO HAS'NT HAD THE CAR OVER 80MPH SINCE I BOUGHT IT. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY SB ON THIS PROBLEM, AND I'M SURE THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY PERSON EXPERIENCING THIS...SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE, AND HYUNDAI NEEDS TO BE TRUE ON THEIR "WARRANTY" ...BE WARY OF THEIR "REMAINDER OF POWERTRAIN WARRANTY " ON USED CARS. THE SAD PART IS THAT THE CLOSET HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP FOR ME IS 2 HOURS AWAY....VERMONT...IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFO PLEASE EMAIL ME [email protected]. *AK

I've owned other cars before, including Honda and Toyota, and I must say that this car ranks right up there with them. It handles great and runs like a higher-end car. If you love to drive, I highly recommend this car.

The 1997 Tiburon FX is a fantastic little car! Don't let the editor's negative comments fool you - put it up against a Civic or a NA Eclipse (which cost about the same or more) and see for yourself. One of the best things about this car is its stylish design. While it may be held back by its emission/sound pollution control devices, with some great maintenance, this car will go the distance. In fact, I've seen real dyno gains of up to 15hp just from a cold air intake (the stock intake is so small you couldn't even fit a dime in vertically), and 8hp from a catback exhaust system. Plus, who wants to look like everyone else on the road? This car is sure to turn heads!

The Tiburon is such a great car! It's definitely an eye-catcher. So far, my '97 Tiburon has over 140,000 miles and I haven't had any major problems yet.
-
I recently had to get rid of this car and I am sad that I did. I had 112,000 miles on the car and it was still running strong. Other than the basic repairs that you have to do to all cars, this one was great and fantastic on gas...I give it a 9.
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it as a temporary vehicle back in 1997, being the first production year. Now, in 2003, I've driven it for 72,200 miles and I'm happy to say that I've never had any mechanical issues with it. It rides smoothly and handles great, although the engine could use a bit of a pick-me-up and the gas mileage is a little lower than a typical 4 cylinder. The best part is that my car is now paid off and I still have 27,800 miles left on the warranty. Thanks for listening!

This car next to me has a new engine, which has been running very well after experiencing some overheating problems with the previous engine. I have noticed some shaking when reaching speeds of 80-90, but it could just be my car. Overall, it is a very fun car to drive. It is important to note that Hyundai used to be one of the cheapest cars on the road, but this car has put good thoughts in my head about their brand. Although the pick-up performance is not the best, the car has a lot of potential. I would recommend a cold air intake to improve the speed. With a little upgrade, this car could be even better.

I've been the proud owner of this car for a few months now. After some expensive 60,000 mile repairs, the car seemed to run perfectly. I must say, the design is quite impressive for a Hyundai, and out of all the cars in that price range, this one has been rather enjoyable. I have noticed a few issues with the transmission, as it felt like the car was shifted into park while I was driving. But other than that, it's been a dream. As a taller guy, standing at 6'4, I fit in this car very comfortably, as long as no one is in the back. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase.
Conrad Ruecker 2024-08-04
I purchased this car used in 2000 and owned it for a decade before it began to experience issues at 98k miles. Overall, it's an okay car with good handling that feels a bit sporty. However, it lacks power and acceleration. The horsepower is lower than the listed 130, closer to 113 or possibly even less. When I owned it, I received a notice of a class action lawsuit against Hyundai for misreporting the HP of the FX. It required only one or two major repairs until 98k, when several issues arose at once, costing me $2750. On the plus side, it handles decently in snow and has minimal rust issues. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is poor for a car with such little power, averaging only 25 mpg (half city, half highway).
Marlin Koelpin 2024-07-22
I bought a Tiburon in 1998 and unfortunately experienced some major issues with the transmission, shift lock override, and other problems (too many to list). I had hoped that Hyundai's great warranty would cover these issues, but unfortunately, I learned my lesson. I will not be purchasing another one.
Murl Strosin 2024-06-07
I have been driving my car for 5 years now, and it has covered 70k miles. Unfortunately, I have had to spend over 3k on major parts in the last year alone. I had to replace the 5 spd transmission for $1200, water pump twice for $510, struts for $269, alternator for $269, and also had to do exhaust work, replace oxygen sensor for $160, fix AC problems, tail light wiring problems for $200, fix a cracked radiator, headlight wiring problems, and replace half shafts for $300, among other things. However, I must admit that the car was dependable until it reached about 127k.
