1999 Honda Cr-v problems

The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

Common 1999 Honda Cr-v problems

The 1999 Honda CR-V is known for its reliability and longevity, but like any vehicle, it can have some common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints and expert analysis:

  • Ignition Coil Failure: Ignition coil failure is a common problem in the 1999 Honda CR-V. This can lead to misfires, reduced performance, and even stalling. Replacing the ignition coils is the recommended solution.
  • Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve Failure: The IAC valve controls the idle speed of the engine. If it fails, it can cause the engine to idle roughly or stall. Replacing the IAC valve is the usual fix for this problem.
  • High Oil Consumption: Some 1999 Honda CR-V owners have reported high oil consumption. This can be due to worn-out piston rings or cylinder walls. Regular oil changes and checking the oil level frequently can help mitigate this issue.
  • Suspension Issues: The 1999 Honda CR-V's front suspension, particularly the lower ball joints and sway bar end links, can wear out and cause popping or chattering noises. Regular maintenance and replacement of these parts can prevent this issue .
  • Interior Water Leaks: Occasionally, the 1999 Honda CR-V may have water leaks in the interior. This can be due to faulty sunroof drains or worn-out window seals. Regular inspection and maintenance can help prevent this issue .
  • Radiator Issues: The radiator on the 1999 Honda CR-V can develop cracks in the plastic casing, leading to leaks. Regular inspection and replacement of the radiator can prevent this issue.
  • Automatic Transmission Oil Changes: Regular oil changes for the automatic transmission are crucial to prevent issues with the transmission. Failure to do so can lead to slipping, jerking, or even transmission failure.
  • Rear Differential Lube: Regularly lubricating the rear differential can prevent humming noises during tight turns at low speeds.
  • Valve Clearance Adjustment: Adjusting the valve clearances early and regularly can prevent valve seat recession in the soft aluminum cylinder heads of the 1999 Honda CR-V.

In conclusion, while the 1999 Honda CR-V is known for its reliability, regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent common issues and prolong the vehicle's lifespan.

1999 Honda Cr-v recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1999 Honda Cr-v.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.
2002-05-16
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SEDANS, COUPES, HATCHBACKS, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, ELECTRICAL CONTACTS IN THE IGNITION SWITCH CAN DEGRADE DUE TO THE HIGH ELECTRICAL CURRENT PASSING THROUGH THE SWITCH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED.
  • Consequence: WORN CONTACTS COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WITHOUT WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 14, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.
1999-10-19
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:INTERIOR/UNDER DASH
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. AN IMPROPERLY ROUTED UNDER DASH WIRE HARNESS COULD BE DAMAGED BY CONTACT WITH THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A BLOWN FUSE. IF THIS OCCURS, OPERATION OF A CRITICAL COMPONENT CAN BE LOST, INCLUDING WINDSHIELD WIPERS, HEADLIGHTS, TURN SIGNAL AND HAZARD LAMPS, TAIL LAMPS, THE ANTI-LOCKING FUNCTION OF THE BRAKES, AND BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM.
  • Consequence: A SUDDEN, UNEXPECTED LOSS OF LIGHTING OR A FAILURE OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS IN BAD WEATHER, COULD BE HAZARDOUS INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A 70MM PROTECTIVE, CORRUGATED PLASTIC TUBE OVER THE WIRE HARNESS, IN THE AREA OF THE BRAKE STOP SWITCH. IF ANY WIRE OR WIRES ARE DAMAGED, THEY WILL BE REPAIRED.

Negative 1999 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Victor Kshlerin 2025-01-03

I purchased my car with just under 30,000 miles on the clock, despite being warned against buying a used rental. Ten years have passed, and the car has now covered an impressive 232,000 miles. In that time, it has only let me down once due to a freak electrical issue, which was easily fixed for just $50. Despite my less-than-ideal treatment of the car, including over-revving and towing beyond its rated weight, it has remained incredibly reliable. I must admit, I have not been the best at keeping up with maintenance, and the car has a few dents from a hailstorm in Kansas, as well as being rear-ended. However, I am amazed at how this car has stood the test of time and continues to run well, even though it is starting to show its age. Just like its owner, it has a lot of character and is still going strong.

I've owned this reliable car for 4 years now and it has been great! The only issue I've had is with the brakes, which can be a bit squeaky at times. Overall, it runs just as well as any other Honda car. If you're a fan of Honda, then you'll definitely enjoy this car.

This is a great family car that can accommodate up to 4 people. It has a lot of cargo space, although you may need to get creative with longer items. The car has been well-maintained with preventative measures and at a reasonable cost, and has never left me stranded. It handles snow with ease, even in depths of 6-8 inches. The car's performance decreases with added weight, but it still gets a consistent 25 mpg with a mix of 70% highway and 30% city driving at 127K miles.

The engine/automatic transmission performance and fuel mileage are below average. The dealer has informed me that the cylinder head needs to be replaced at 68,000 miles. While the dealer has agreed to pay for the parts, they have refused to cover the labor costs, which are estimated to be over $1200. As a long-time Honda owner since 1978, I am disappointed in the dealer and American Honda's lack of accountability for this widespread issue.

I've been driving my 1999 Honda CR-V for about 5 years now. While it's a reliable car that gets me where I need to go, I have noticed that it lacks a bit of get up and go. However, I've made some aftermarket modifications to improve its gas mileage. Overall, I'm quite happy with my CR-V!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It's amazing that you've been able to put so many miles on it and it still looks and drives great. It sounds like you've taken excellent care of it with regular servicing and maintenance. Despite a few door dings from inconsiderate people, it's clear that your car has been a reliable and valuable asset to you. Thanks for sharing your story!

The painful experience with my Honda was the lease, not the vehicle. However, it's a nice looking vehicle and can be fun to drive. Additionally, it has been fairly reliable, which is exactly what I expected.

I bought this car in April 2006 and I absolutely love my Honda!! Although I had to replace my timing belt and water pump at 92,000 for the very first time in my Honda's life, it's been great in winter weather and for transporting my dog and me. It's also great on gas for a 5spd. I would buy another in a heartbeat! I love my Honda CR-V!

This has been a great car! I would definitely consider buying another one in the future.
