The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Negative 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Merle Abbott 2024-08-19

After 3 years, unfortunately, the alternator has stopped working. Additionally, the tires have developed dry rot, despite being only 4 years old. It seems that all 4 tires need to be replaced. It's worth noting that the car has not yet reached 50 thousand miles. Lastly, the aluminum rims are not the best quality.

  2. King Reichel 2024-07-03

I purchased a 2018 Outlander Sport for $23,000 out the door, but unfortunately, I regret the decision. The car rides rough and only gets 18 mpg in the city, despite the advertised 23 mpg. Additionally, there is not much storage space in the car, and the paint is already peeling on the back bumper. I also accidentally bumped the side door, causing a dent. On the positive side, the car has Bluetooth capabilities, although it requires a cell phone to use the navigation. I later found out that there was a $5,000 rebate available for this car. Overall, I don't plan on keeping this car past this year.

  3. Curt Sporer 2024-06-23

The transmission went out at 75,000 miles. I only had it for a year and a half, but I did regular maintenance.

  4. Alexzander Eichmann 2024-06-21

The Mitsubishi 4-cylinder motor has a fuel consumption similar to a V6, but unfortunately lacks power. The interior is a combination of cheap plastic materials, such as the steering wheel, dash, and seats, with some attention to detail, such as the shifting knob. It would be great if this car had more power. However, the depreciation rate is not favourable, and it may not resell well. The most annoying thing is the remote control, which requires pressing 'Open' twice to open the passenger's door. If you press it once, only the driver's door will open, accompanied by an annoying horn noise. Despite these issues, the Mitsubishi dealer was happy to take my old car as a trade-in. Now, I am looking for a car that I really want and will trade in my Outlander Sport (which is not sporty at all).

  5. Adonis Dickens 2024-05-23

This vehicle may not be the highest quality, but it serves its purpose as a spare second vehicle with ground clearance and AWD. While it may not have the smoothest ride or the most luxurious fit and finish, it is a great option for those who are looking for an SUV in the low $20's and aren't too picky about quality, comfort or resale. If you're on a budget and looking for a reliable option, this could be the perfect fit for you. However, if you're looking for something more high-end, you may want to consider other options. Overall, this vehicle is a good choice for those who prioritize affordability and practicality over luxury and comfort.

Positive 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Haskell Terry 2025-01-02

I recently rented this car for a week-long trip from the US to Canada in November and had to drive in some winter conditions. Luckily, the AWD worked perfectly and I didn't experience any trouble on icy roads. The rental was a 2.0 and getting up to highway speed with four adults was a bit of a challenge, but overall it was a straightforward and reliable rental car. It had some newer tech features like USB and Apple CarPlay, which was a nice touch. Personally, I don't think we need anything more than that! I checked the price tag of this car at a local dealer and I wouldn't pay full price, but a year-old model with less than 15k miles would be a great option to consider. That's just my take on this CUV.

  2. Conner Reichel 2024-11-15

Congratulations on your purchase of the 2019 Outlander Sport LE 2.0 Auto AWC! It's great to hear that you've noticed some improvement in the transmission as it learns your driving habits. With over 7000 miles on the clock, it sounds like you're really enjoying your SUV. However, I understand that the cargo size may be a bit small for your needs. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Vincent Harris 2024-09-16

My family will never buy anything else in the future than a Mitsubishi. We were hit from behind at a red light and were able to drive our car home. The SUV that hit us was totaled and both the driver and passenger went to the ER. Thankfully, we were completely unharmed in our Outlander Sport. It was truly impressive! I can't wait to buy another one for my husband.

  4. Judge Hayes 2024-09-14

I love this car! It's so dependable and requires very little maintenance. Plus, my Outlander Sport gets an amazing 30mpg on the highway.

  5. Russel Smitham 2024-08-23

Great warranty, good gas mileage, and fun to drive. It's solid on the road, although there is a bit more road noise than I would like.
