2005 Toyota Matrix problems
The Toyota Matrix, officially named Toyota Corolla Matrix, is a compact hatchback manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and derived from the Corolla. Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the Matrix was the result of a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, with the GM version being the Pontiac Vibe, which was assembled by New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, California, United States.
The Matrix was positioned as a sporty hatchback counterpart of the North American Corolla and was counted as a variant of it in Toyota's sales figures.
Although identical mechanically, and nearly as much internally, the Matrix and Vibe had different sheetmetal and exterior trim designed by their respective brands. Both vehicles are narrow, tall station wagons styled in a quasi-SUV fashion (called a crossover utility vehicle or "CUV" by Toyota) and marketed to a fairly youthful market segment. This type of car is also commonly referred to as a sport wagon.
First sold in February 2002, the Matrix saw a minor facelift for the 2005 model year, and was redesigned completely in 2008 for the 2009 model year, following the tenth generation Corolla. Sales of the Matrix were discontinued in the United States in 2013 and in Canada in 2014.

Common 2005 Toyota Matrix problems
The Toyota Matrix 2005 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most significant issues is the engine problem, which is characterized by excessive oil consumption and ticking or rattling sounds. Many owners have noticed that the car consumed too much oil, which could lead to severe engine problems if left unchecked.
Another common problem with the Toyota Matrix 2005 is the bad water pump. The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant throughout the engine to prevent overheating. If the water pump fails, the engine could overheat, leading to severe damage. A bad starter motor is also a common problem, causing the car not to start, producing a single click, but not running.
The Matrix's oxygen sensors are also prone to breaking, causing the check engine light to illuminate and engine-related issues such as rough engine idle, misfires, and poor performance. Replacement oxygen sensors for the Toyota Matrix cost around $30 to $110.
Additionally, some owners of the 2010 Toyota Matrix have reported that their brakes wear out fast, with both brake pads and rotors needing replacement after only traveling 24,000 miles. This is unusual because brake rotors should last for more than 50,000 miles. Driving with worn-out brakes can result in whining noises during braking and less braking power.
Many Toyota Matrix owners have also reported that their engine consumes too much oil. There have been 34 reports of this issue on CarComplaints.com, and it's been happening to owners of 2003 to 2011 Matrix models. If oil levels are left unchecked, it can cause serious engine problems such as overheating and excessive engine wear, which is expensive to repair.
Finally, the Matrix's bolts attaching the glass to the regulator can loosen, causing the window to fall. This problem can be fixed by tightening the bolts or replacing the regulator
In summary, the Toyota Matrix 2005 has several common problems that owners have reported, including engine problems, bad water pump, bad starter motor, faulty oxygen sensors, premature brake wear, excessive oil consumption, and window regulator problems. These issues can be expensive to repair, so regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to ensure the car's longevity and reliability.

- Summary: TAKATA RECALL - I RECEIVED A LETTER SEVERAL MONTHS AGO INFORMING ME MY MATRIX WAS RECALLED FOR THE AIR BAG INFLATORS. I WAS TOLD I'D BE CONTACTED WHEN THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. AFTER HEARING NOTHING, I WENT TO TOYOTA'S WEBSITE. IT SAYS THE PART SHOULD HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE IN MY AREA STARTING IN DEC. 2015. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER , & THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T DO THE REPAIR UNTIL THE END OF AUG. 2016. IT WILL HAVE BEEN ABOUT A YEAR & A HALF SINCE I WAS INFORMED OF THE RECALL - THIS IS A TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. MEANWHILE, THEY SUGGEST NO ONE RIDE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT UNTIL THE REPAIR IS COMPLETE. TOYOTA IS DOING A TERRIBLE JOB WITH THIS WHOLE THING.

- Summary: TAKATA RECALL - IN JUNE 2015, I WAS NOTIFIED BY TOYOTA THAT MY MATRIX HAD BEEN ADDED TO THE LIST OF VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THE TAKATA RECALL AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT MY LOCAL DEALER TO SET UP REPAIRS. WHEN I CALLED I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTED AGAIN ONCE THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. I HAVE NOW RECEIVED THE NOTIFICATION THAT PARTS ARE AVAILABLE, NEARLY 10 MONTHS AFTER THE INITIAL NOTIFICATION. WHAT TROUBLES ME IS THAT IN THE LATEST LETTER IT STATES " UNTIL THIS REMEDY IS PERFORMED, WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE WITH AN OCCUPANT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT." WHY DIDN'T THEY MENTION THIS BEFORE? WHY DIDN'T THEY PROVIDE THE REPAIRS SOONER? WHAT IF I HAD BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT WITH SOMEONE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED OR POSSIBLY KILLED. WHY ARE THESE LARGE COMPANIES ALLOWED TO PUT OTHERS AT RISK SIMPLY BY PERFORMING SOME SORT OF FAILURE ANALYSIS WHEN PEOPLES LIVES ARE AT RISK.

Love how it handles, and how it looks! It's so much fun to drive that you forget it's a sensible car! And with the seats folded down, it holds a lot!!
-
This car is fantastic! I absolutely love the fact that the seats can be folded down, which is incredibly useful. In fact, my Matrix can actually fit more than my pick-up truck bed! The car is also very comfortable, has great fuel economy, and is surprisingly roomy for its size. The only downside is that the tires that Toyota puts on are not very good. They are noisy, slippery in inclement conditions, and are already cracking with only 26,000 miles on the car. However, this issue can easily be remedied by replacing them. Overall, this car is an excellent value and I would highly recommend it!
-
I love this car! It's just what I wanted - a good cross between an SUV and a car. It's easier to handle than an SUV and great on gas. I always get around 28 in city driving. However, I had a Rav 4 for 6 days and it wasn't for me.
-
Terrific car! You won't believe how much I've been able to fit in it - sheet rock, lumber, furniture, and even my critters (3 dogs and 2 cats) - with plenty of room to spare.
-
I'm so glad you bought this car to save money on gas! The mileage is fantastic, ranging from 29-32 MPG in the city. It's great to hear that you, at 6'5

Your car has been very reliable, although the gas mileage could be better for such a small vehicle. A family of four can be comfortable on short trips, but it can be a bit cramped on long journeys. The hatch has good capacity to carry things. Although there have been some issues with the interior, there have been no mechanical problems. The street noise can be quite loud, and the ride can be rough, as with all Toyota's in my opinion. However, overall, with 80,000 miles on it, it is going strong! There have been no mechanical issues whatsoever. The tires were replaced within the first year. I would suggest that all cars should be standard equipped with a back window wiper as it is a huge danger not to have one, like in my case! It stays filthy because of the design, and when mixed with fog or rain, it can cause problems! You can't beat the dependability of this car!

I've been a big fan of this car since I bought it new seven years ago. I purchased the 5-speed manual base line model and for the first 100K, the only things I had to replace were the usual things - tires, battery, brake pads, and clutch (in that order). In fact, the clutch didn't start to go until I cleared 110K, and I do a lot of city driving. However, in the last six months, the car has started to fall apart. First, the clutch, then the parking brake (twice), the struts, the suspension system, and the air conditioner is leaking... I've put more money into this car in the last three months than I did the whole rest of the time I've owned it.

Have 109k km (now 2009). Very functional, mechanically very sound, and will be difficult to replace. Watch the blind spots (thick windshield posts, small mirrors). Factory tires plain dangerous on wet/slush/snow. Road noise is high (even with undercoating). Single disk CD had to be replaced (jumped tracks). Sluggish initial acceleration but o.k. at highway speed (to be expected for 1.8). Signal light doesn't cancel with less than full turns (nuisance).

I switched from SUVs to this car for fuel economy. While it's fun to drive, I've found that repairs can be quite costly. For example, I recently had to get the air conditioner repaired, which cost over $1000. Additionally, the brake rotors warped at just 39000 miles, which set me back another $550. Unfortunately, Toyota did not acknowledge any responsibility for these issues. As a result, I've decided that this will be my last Toyota.
