2011 Mitsubishi Outlander sport problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander sport problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2011 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These problems include issues with the lower control arm, the continuously variable transmission (CVT), the crank position sensor, the water pump, and the door handle.
- Lower Control Arm: The lower control arm is a crucial component of the car's suspension system. If it fails, it can cause the car to pull to one side or the other, and it can also cause a noisy clunking sound when driving over bumps. This problem is often caused by wear and tear, and it can be expensive to repair, as it may require the replacement of the entire control arm assembly .
- CVT Transmission: The CVT transmission in the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2011 has been reported to have several issues, including slipping, jerking, and hesitation when accelerating. This problem is often caused by a failure of the transmission's internal components, such as the clutch or the torque converter. It can be expensive to repair, and it may require the replacement of the entire transmission .
- Crank Position Sensor: The crank position sensor is responsible for determining the position of the crankshaft in the engine. If it fails, it can cause the engine to stall or to have difficulty starting. This problem is often caused by wear and tear, and it can be expensive to repair, as it may require the replacement of the entire sensor .
- Water Pump: The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine to keep it cool. If it fails, it can cause the engine to overheat, which can lead to serious damage. This problem is often caused by wear and tear, and it can be expensive to repair, as it may require the replacement of the entire pump .
- Door Handle: The door handle on the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2011 has been reported to break easily, which can make it difficult to open the door from the outside. This problem is often caused by a design flaw, and it can be expensive to repair, as it may require the replacement of the entire handle assembly .
In conclusion, while the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2011 has several common problems, it is important to note that not all cars of this model will experience these issues. It is always a good idea to do thorough research and to have any potential issues checked out by a qualified mechanic before purchasing a used car.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-11
- VIN: JA4AS3AW8BU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander in 2015. In January 2018 the engine seized up while driving and was not repairable. Thankfully I was able to pull over and no one was hurt. The vehicle was only 7 years old with only 112,846 miles and I still had a loan on the vehicle for approxiamtly $10,000. The vehicle was at the time worth the cost left to pay it off. I consulted many Mitsubishi dealerships around the country and the only fix as a new engine for the vehicle which was an additional $10,000 and there were no engines anywhere in the country that could be found. The reason is that Mitsubishi decommissioned this Outlander model in 2013 due to the issue with the engine - essentially it was built like a snowmobile engine. The belt snapped and there was no repairing it - only replacing the entire engine. Mitsubishi knew this was an issue with this model - they decommissioned it only after 2 years on the market and they didn't issue a recall until 2018 - 5 years later! In the mean time I had found others around the coutnry with the same issue and we were all left with auto loans and no working vehicle. This is extremely poor business tactics and dishonest and very unsafe. I was lucky I was not driving on a freeway at the time when the engine seized up and the vehicle bucked like wild horse - it could have resulted in a major accident. It is dishonest to issue a recall 5 years after the company knew the vehicle had an issue and most likely all of the models had been sold or abandoned by this time so they don't have to pay for many repairs since there are not many that have lasted until 2018 to be repaired. A complaint has also been filed with the Minnesota State Attorney General. I was stuck with the $10,000 loan on a car that was now worth $0 and Mitsubishi at that time acted they had no idea what was wrong with it or why this happened. All lies.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-15
- VIN: JA4AR4AU3BZ
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: THIS MODEL VEHICLE HAS A BAD DESIGN FLAW THAT MITSUBISHI REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE. THE LOCATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONER DISCHARGE CAUSES WATER TO DRIP DIRECTLY ONTO THE SUB FRAME BELOW. THIS DRIPPING CORRODED A HOLE THROUGH MY SUB FRAME DEEMING IT STRUCTURALLY UNSOUND AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND CAUSED IT FAILED MY STATE INSPECTION. MY LOCAL DEALER AND MITSUBISHI BOTH REFUSED TO COVER THE COST OF REPLACING THE PART SINCE NO RECALL CURRENTLY EXISTS. I ENDED UP GETTING A USED PART FROM A LOCAL SHOP FOR HALF THE COST OF WHAT THE DEALER QUOTED ME. I ALSO HAD THE MECHANIC JURY RIG AN AC DISCHARGE TUBE EXTENSION TO DIRECT THE WATER AWAY FROM THE SUB FRAME SO IT WOULDN'T KEEP HAPPENING. HAD MY STATE INSPECTOR NOT CAUGHT THIS CORROSION, I WOULD BE STILL DRIVING THE UNSAFE VEHICLE. A COMPROMISED SUB FRAME COULD RESULT IN NUMEROUS FAILURES THAT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY IT DID NOT GET TO THAT POINT. IT IS CLEAR THE CORROSION IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE AC DISCHARGE, RATHER THAN NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE REST OF THE SUB FRAME AND SUSPENSION THROUGH OUT THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE ANYWHERE NEAR THE LEVEL OR CORROSION THAT IS DIRECTLY BELOW THE AC DISCHARGE TUBE. GOOGLE SEARCHING THIS PROBLEM MAKES IT CLEAR I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE. THERE ARE OTHER MODELS OF OUTLANDERS AND OUTLANDER SPORTS THAT SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED SO A RECALL CAN BE ISSUED FOR ALL MODELS WITH THIS DESIGN.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-06-04
- VIN: JA4AS3AW2BU

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO JERRY'S MITSUBISHI (443-219-9464, LOCATED AT 1906 E JOPPA ROAD, PARKVILLE, MD 21234) WHERE IT WAS STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BEARING INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION WAS ABOUT TO FRACTURE, WHICH CAUSED THE NOISE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A KNOWN ISSUE. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO NHTSA. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED AND THAT THE CONTACT WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 69,000.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-01
- VIN: JA4AP4AUXBZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I KNOW THIS CAR HAS FOUR RECALLS ON IT. BUT I'M HAVING ISSUES WITH WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE BEEN GOOGLING SLOW OR SLUGGISH ACCELERATION ISSUES AND OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THEN I CAME ACROSS A RECALL FOR THE OUTLANDER SPORT INVOLVING THE CVT IN NEWER MODELS. I DON'T KNOW IF THOSE CVT ISSUES ARE THE SAME ONES MY CAR IS HAVING. BUT IS BECOMING A PAIN IN THE BUTT TO TRY AND ACCELERATE FAST ENOUGH ON THE ROAD OR THE HIGHWAY TO GET OUT OF PEOPLES WAY OR TO MOVE JUST NOTICING PEOPLE GOING AROUND ME BECAUSE OF MY SLUGGISH ACCELERATION. I HAVE TO PRESS ON THE GAS PRETTY HARD TO EVEN GET UP TO ABOUT 20 OR 30 NOT TO MENTION WHAT SOUNDS LIKE MY MUFFLER IS HUMMING. I FEEL IT'S A DANGER TRYING TO ACCELERATE AND NOT GETTING UP TO THE SPEED TO MAKE A TURN OR GET ON THE HIGHWAY LIKE I SAID. I NOTICED THAT I HAVE TO PUT A SPECIFIC DATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS FORM BUT IT'S BEEN GOING ON FOR A WHILE NOW. I ACTUALLY WENT TO MITSUBISHI TO GET MY TRANSMISSION FLUID REPLACED AND THE GUY SAID THAT THIS ISSUE WILL GO AWAY BUT IT DIDN'T.

I really love this car! I've had two Hondas and a Jeep, but this one is my favorite. It comes with all the little extras like heated seats, Bluetooth, and keyless entry and start, all for a much lower price than Honda. It looks great and is a joy to drive. I highly recommend getting the larger wheels and 4WD, as it makes all the difference in the world. During a recent snowstorm, this CUV handled better than any SUV I've ever driven, including my previous Jeep. Thanks to Mitsb for creating an affordable and awesome CUV. I'm having a blast driving it and I'm sure you will too!

This thing gets as good mileage as my econo-box hatchback with a 5-speed. I drive 60/40 on the highway and in the city and have been averaging 29 mpg! I bought the base model to keep the cost down, but I was pleasantly surprised by all the standard features. From the sleek look of the vehicle to the comfortable interior, advanced electronics, and impressive performance, this SUV is definitely one of the best values out there. Great job, Mitsubishi!

I've owned this vehicle since October 2012. Unfortunately, my check engine light just came on and the code at AutoZone indicates that it's the oxygen sensor. However, I'm hopeful that this issue will be covered by the warranty since I've only driven 18,000 miles. Apart from this, I haven't experienced any other issues with the car. While a 6 cylinder engine would be an improvement, the current engine's clicking noise is just part of the design. On the bright side, I haven't noticed any road noise and the car gets pretty good gas mileage, especially when I'm paying attention to the green fuel efficiency line. The ride is comfortable for both myself and passengers, and the cargo space is sufficient for most needs.

During my research, I had the opportunity to look at several different makes. After careful consideration, I ultimately decided on the Outlander Sport due to its impressive standard features. Although I was initially concerned about the 2.0 4 cylinder engine, it exceeded my expectations and allowed me to effortlessly pass other drivers on the freeway. Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised by the spacious interior, which comfortably accommodated my 6-foot, 350-pound frame. While the exterior may not be to everyone's taste, I personally find it quite appealing. Overall, I believe that this vehicle offers exceptional value for its price, especially when compared to other vehicles in its class that offer far fewer features.

Congratulations on your recent purchase of the Outlander Sport! I noticed that you were considering the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tuscon, but ultimately decided on the Outlander Sport. I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying your new car and that you find the power to be more than adequate. It's great that you haven't experienced any issues with engine noise, and it's good to know that the CVT transmission can cause some noise if you have a lead foot. The car is designed for quick acceleration, which is why it uses higher RPM's. The CVT transmission is unique in that it doesn't shift, but instead uses one large gear. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with the Outlander Sport, and I'm happy to hear that you're getting better gas mileage than your previous car. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Over the past few years, I have experienced a whining sound from the transmission after driving for long periods of time on the freeway. The issue gradually worsened and started happening after driving for shorter periods of time on the freeway, then after driving up any hill, and eventually after just driving a few miles in the city. I received a warning that said 'Transmission Overheating, Slow Down.' Despite taking the car to the dealership, they assured me that this was a normal complaint with this year and model and would go away after changing the CVT fluid at the 60,000 mile service. I had the 60k service done at 57,000 miles because I couldn't stand the transmission noise anymore, but the issue continued to persist. After taking the car back to the dealership, they still insisted that it was normal. However, I knew that this was not the case. The next time I took it in, they said it was because I was driving in 4wd mode. When the problem happened in 2wd mode, I took it back and they said they couldn't reproduce the issue and decided that it must not be a problem. Unfortunately, the final straw was when I experienced the issue after an easy 30-minute trip on the freeway. I received the warning and couldn't pull off to let the transmission cool down, and the car completely lost power, leaving me stranded. Although the transmission eventually cooled down and I was able to drive it again, the dealership still insisted that it was either a normal issue or that the problem didn't exist. As a result, I decided to sell the car and will be purchasing a more reliable SUV from a brand with better dealer service.

Overall, the car is pretty decent. It's comfortable and stylish, and the road noise is well dampened. It's suitable for a single person or small family. However, I was somewhat disappointed with the performance and fuel economy. On average, fuel consumption is 18-19mpg in the city and 20-22mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, my experience with the Mitsubishi dealership was quite dismal.

I'm starting to understand why the Mitsubishi dealer had so many Outlander Sports and why I got a price under $16k. While this car looks amazing and offers a lot for the price, there are a couple of issues that I've noticed. Firstly, the suspension can be a bit soft, which can make the car feel a bit bumpy on the freeway at 65 MPH. Secondly, I've had a few check engine lights come on due to an issue with the MIVEC valve timing, but the dealer has been helpful in resolving this. Overall, I still think this is a great car for the price!

After my first long road trip in this car, I was disappointed with the comfort of the seats. They were extremely hard. Additionally, the black interior seems to get dusty quickly. Unfortunately, the fuel economy was not at all what was promised, even though I drove it so that the eco light was on as much as possible, and I only got about 20/25 on the highway. Lastly, my dealership experience was also very poor.
