2023 Jeep Wagoneer problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Wagoneer is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) nameplate of Jeep vehicles, with several models marketed for the 1963 through 1993 model years and again since the 2022 model year.

Various versions of the Wagoneer were manufactured in the US and other nations by Kaiser Motors (1962−1971), by American Motors (1971−1987), by Chrysler (1987−1993), and Stellantis from 2021.

A revival of the Jeep Wagoneer was introduced as a concept version on September 3, 2020, and as the production model on March 11, 2021. Sales begin in the second half of 2021 with 2022 model year versions.

Common 2023 Jeep Wagoneer problems

The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the main issues is the interior fit and finish, which some owners find disappointing for a vehicle in its price range. The base Series II trim features plasticky surfaces on the dashboard and upper door panels, which can look and feel cheap. Additionally, the fake wood inserts do not fool anyone and may have a not-so-solid feel to them.

Another problem is the steering wheel design, which some drivers find uncomfortable due to its large size and lack of precision and feedback. This can make it difficult to feel in complete control behind the wheel.

The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer also has some electrical system issues, particularly in the first year of production. NHTSA data shows that there have been enough complaints about the Wagoneer's electrical system to raise a red flag. These problems can be challenging to diagnose and may remain a constant issue throughout the life of an affected car. Additionally, there have been reports of engine failures, which is a significant concern for such a new vehicle.

Another issue is the high price tags of the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer. The standard-wheelbase model ranges from $82,290-$92,290 including freight and PDI, while the Wagoneer L retails from $89,790-$95,790. These prices are significantly higher than competitors in the full-size SUV market, making the Wagoneer a less attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Finally, there have been reports of customer support and service issues with the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer. Some owners have complained about the lack of loaner cars, unresponsive service managers, and unanswered dealer surveys. This can make it difficult for owners to get the level of service and support they expect and deserve.

In conclusion, while the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer has many positive features, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common problems. By doing so, they can make an informed decision about whether the Wagoneer is the right vehicle for them.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 1C4SJSAP2PS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I bought this vehicle used form Carmax, <12000 miles. Drove about 12 miles, when while parking I noticed the car stopped and asked to start engine and engage gear again. Didn't think much of it. Then started driving again and the check engine light turned on. There are lots of reports of wagoneers with engine light problems (in fact we had test driven a different one with both check engine and transmission lights on which for obvious reasons didn't buy). I reported to Carmax. Finished my drive and stayed idle for a while trying to see if there were any settings that may be responsible, but the engine was stuttering, almost shutting off, with the entire thing, even the driving lights shutting off intermittently. The following day I took the vehicle for a check at Carmax, and while slowing at an intersection to let a school bus pass, the car completely shut down. I started again and drove very carefully. They could not diagnose the problem at Carmax and they wanted to send to Jeep. I eventually returned the vehicle. I had seen reports of many problems with the 2022 Wagoneer model, but none about the 2023, but I now came across forums where people even describe complete shutdowns of the vehicle while driving in the highway. While I returned the vehicle, I think these serious engine and system failures could endanger others on the road. I took videos and pictures of the problems. Happy to share if you request them.

You can hear the parking pin trying to engage until it slows to a point and then it'll slam on and lock up the brakes and skid to a stall. This has happened four times now and the vehicle has been in the shop the entire summer. Someone is going to get killed from this.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-14
  • VIN: 1C4SJSBP5PS
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I worry about the reliability of the vehicle. I have had it since June of 2023 and since I have purchased the vehicle, I have had nothing but issues. It has now been towed twice back to the dealership for engine issues. I have tried to reach out to many different people to try and get this resolved with no luck. I have 2 small children that rely on my transportation along with getting myself to and from work. The first time that I brought the car in was July 2023 (mileage was 5000) for the engine overheating, it was fixed late September and back in October with the engine shaking and check engine light on. It then was "fixed" and went back in March with the same check engine light and engine shake, I changed my tires to see if that would help with the shake per the dealership request and it did not, I came back in April twice and then May. It has now been towed from my home to the dealership once again pending some resolution from here. It has been at the dealership for 80+ days with these engine issues. I have been fighting with the reliability of my vehicle since I first purchased it and have had no luck with it. My fear is being left somewhere with my 2 small children without a vehicle, again. I am requesting Wagoneer purchase the car back from me so I can have dependability back for myself and my family. The service department has been a nightmare to work with in regard to getting them to fix the vehicle. I have been promised a call back a few times and I have got nothing. I have also made the attempt to get Bessey's to repurchase the car this vehicle as it has failed me so many times. At this point I am really upset with this company and its unwillingness to help. My car has been their time and time again for the same repair attempt. In all honesty, I don't believe my concerns are being taken seriously as it is STILL not driving as it should. Engine still shakes during acceleration and check engine light will appear.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
  • VIN: 1C4SJSBP8PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I have a 2023 Wagoneer L - series II carbide. On 2 separate occasions my Wagoneer has powered down and put itself into park. 7/22/24 - Pulling out of a parking lot, and as I was pulling out alerts popped up and put itself into park. I turned the vehicle off and on again, and proceeded to put the vehicle in drive and it instantly put itself into park. I again, restarted the vehicle and was able to drive. 7/23/24 - I pulled out of a parking lot onto the road. As I was driving on the road (going about 20 MPH) the alerts appeared and as I was trying to get over out of traffic, the car powered down and slammed itself into park. This time I was able to press the start button for it to start and was able to drive it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-26
  • VIN: 1C4SJVBP8PS
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving 45 down a city street and my 2023 Wagoneer II Carbide started to overheat and then the engine just stopped running. I was able to get the car out of traffic. Dash was saying the engine oil level was low, but when checking the menu for oil, it showed everything was fine. The car cooled down, and we tried to drive it again and it died again 3 times on the way to the dealership. I was told it was a faulty thermostat and the dealership replaced the part with the new version of the same part, which means it will die again. This seems to be a know issue with the Hurricane engines, and I have seen a small recall of 500 cars (mine was not part of that recall) for this thermostat issue. I am now stuck with a car that I am afraid to drive and it is a ticking time bomb for another thermostat failure. This failure is after the real differential had been replaced.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
  • VIN: 1C4SJVBP2PS
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Car suddenly over heated in the middle of an intersection only allowing travel at about 1 mph thru traffic due to transmission also slipping because of the sudden thermostat failure. Was able to pull over to check coolant level and was low went to remove coolant reservoir cap and pressure in system blew the cap off as I was removing it. Coolant instantly returned from the engine. I suffered severe burns to my left hand. Car was taken to a nearby dealership for repairs. I decided to trade in the vehicle for the same make and model with only 1,000 miles will probably fail the same as previous and would like a recall for faulty stuck thermostat issued. My complaint is on the sudden thermostat failure that occurred on the I6 3.0 SO Hurricane engine on the 2023 Wagoneer Series 2. Causing severe burns to my hand as I attempted to check proper coolant level after engine overheating light was indicated. Car was traded in and is currently in repair.

  • Summary: Vehicle dash board lights up with trailer brake assist and brakes on highway while going 60+ speed. It does it periodically with no warn and becoming more frequent as I have been driving. I have stressed to the dealership since Jan about this issue and the safety. The lane assist keeps turning off and tells me to get service. Dealership says it is fixed but two days later still acting up.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-08
  • VIN: 1C4SJVAT1PS
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My car recently hit 10k miles. We had a safe trip to Florida the week before no issues or signs of any issue. Two days ago I take my son to the pool at my mother in laws house and go to visit my parents and when I start to leave and pull out of the driveway my car stops and my steering wheel won’t turn but a certain amount. So I had to pull back and try multiple times. Every time I turn the wheel a certain amount it starts to sound like something is slowly cracking under the car. And the car just stops moving if you try to turn the wheel too much. I continue on my way home in Canton, Ga from Woodstock, Ga which is about a thirty minute drive and I have to take wide turns in order to make any turn and not get stuck or stopped. Vehicle works fine going straight but I literally cannot turn my wheel to a certain point or the car stops. It is at the dealership now and they can’t make it do the same thing day after they get into it but I sent them videos as it was happening because my neighbors had to help me park it in my driveway when I got home so I got it on recording how it stops and doesn’t turn properly. I have videos I can provide it will not let me upload

The contact's husband did not sustain any injuries. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle was damaged and the damage was half an inch away from impacting the engine. The vehicle was towed to an auto collision repair center, where it remained. The dealer was notified of the failure. The dealer informed the contact the air bags did not deploy due to the position of the sensors in the front end of the vehicle, and the vehicle operated as designed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and sent a third-party technician, who took photos of the damage and read the EDR. The technician then determined that the air bags did not have to deploy. The failure mileage was unknown.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
  • VIN: 1C4SJSAP4PS
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: 2023 Jeep Wagoneer steering wheel became locked with alerts on the dashboard "Power Steering Unavailable Service Required." Thank GOD I parked in a parking lot when I went food shopping. This has happened twice before to my wife in the garage but no alerts came out. I spent two hours stuck and 1 hour waiting for a tow truck. It was a cold day and after the heat to the seats and steering were on, the steering became soft and I was able to steer the car home. I took car to dealership the next day and they gave me a loaner. Two days later I went to the dealership to find out what is going on. They said it may be up to six weeks to get a part. As per the rep who I know very well, she said there have been 59 reports across US and there are only 19 parts available. It is a module issue but it is built into the steering wheel column. I read other reports and they are scary [XXX] I had a problem with a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica owned by the same Jeep, Dodge, and Chrysler manufacturer. I think the US gov needs to step in and dissolve this company and everyone return their vehicles and send a message to other car manufacturers. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-05
  • VIN: 1C4SJVDP6PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: This vehicle has a persistent brake fluid leaking problem. Anytime the vehicle is parked at a ~ 7% incline, where the front of the car is lower than the rear, the car leaks material amounts of brake fluid. The dealer has tried many times (over 4 times) to fix the issue by replacing all relevant parts… it still leaks. Based on my observations, there appears to be a design flaw in the brake fluid reservoir and the reservoir cap, it can not keep the fluid in the system. The risks arising from the persistent leaks include: 1.) catastrophic brake failure due to insufficient fluid in the system, 2.) fire risk, engine compartment has flammable brake fluid places it should not be, 3.) environmental contamination risk, and 4.) slip and fall risk from leaving slippery puddles of hazardous material ever place this vehicle is parked on an incline.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-24
  • VIN: 1C4SJSDP8PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: This incident occurred today when I was on the slower lane and moved to the left lane in order to accelerate. The transmission didn't respond to my acceleration as a result the gear wouldn't shift to higher level and my vehicle remained stuck at the lower level. This could have been catastrophic to my family if there traffic was moving faster but because of slow moving traffic I was able to pull it over the shoulder and put it in neutral and then was able to drive. I haven't shown this issue to the dealer yet. I have checked about this problem online and multiple people have reported the same issue and dealership couldn't fix it. It happens when I have to accelerate from a 10 miles per hour to a higher speed. No, th vehicle hasn't been inspected by police or insurance or manufacturer. No failure was displayed anywhere.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-02
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1C4SJSAP6PS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: After very minor accident the car crash symbol and the car in lane symbol came on and will not turn off. Took to dealer and they said there was no update to correct the problem. Feel unsafe in a car that should be safe since it's new. And has error message of limited functionality.

BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-11
  • VIN: 1C4SJVBPXPS
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Driving vehicle with no vehicles within 100 yards directly in front of vehicle and with 1 car in the lane to vehicles right on a 2-lane road. Vehicle on the right was about 30-40 car lengths ahead of my own vehicle. The collision detection system and emergency braking system sounded off, lit up the dash panel stating BREAK, and then applied the brakes while going 50 mph with drivers behind me. The driver behind me had to swerve onto the left median to avoid colliding with my vehicle. The obvious issue here is that no vehicle was within any distance that should have triggered my collision avoidance system, but yet it went off unexpectedly and almost caused the person behind me to wreck their vehicle into mine. No check engine light or other service lights were on at the time of this event or subsequent events I have experience since this first event occurring. Called Wagoneer Client services who told me that all reports they receive are not reviewed by Stellantis even if they are a safety issue. I called the dealership after receiving this information from the Wagoneer client services and took my vehicle in to be looked at. Dealer stated because no freeze frame trouble data existed this must not be an issue and determined it was not having issues. Vehicle since being taken in has suffered from numerous electrical issues and has been out of service for weeks without rectifying. This however is a major safety issue and thus I feel needs to be researched and looked into.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-23
  • VIN: 1C4SJVBP7PS
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Panoramic sunroof exploded while driving on freeway in good weather conditions. The only thing preventing the glass from falling on my head and my son's was the screen underneath the sunroof. The extremely loud and unexpected sound caused by the glass exploding was incredibly disorienting while in traffic traveling at approximately 65 mph. This could have caused an accident. There was no debris falling on the car that would have caused this damage, and we were not traveling under a bridge at the time of the event. I brought the vehicle to my local Jeep dealer in Torrance, CA. It has not yet been inspected by the dealer or manufacturer.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-13
  • VIN: 1C4SJVDP6PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Leaks break fluid when parked at an angle (nose facing down hill). Heat seems to be a factor because it leaks more on hot days. The dealer has tried to remedy the problem no fewer than 4 times, replacing many major components. There appears to be a design flaw in the master cylinder area as that is where the brake fluid keeps leaking from. I have to imagine if you keep losing break fluid it is a safety issue and an environmental one.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-21
  • VIN: 1C4SJSDP1PS
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The front windshield has a very noticeable warp under the rear view mirror. Enough to cause vertigo while driving. Many forums explain this issue has been reported to Jeep but no resolution has been proposed by them.

2023 Jeep Wagoneer recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer.

2024-06-13
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Dodge Durango, 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, 2022 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, Chrysler Voyager, 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, and Ram Promaster vehicles. The radio software may prevent the rearview image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
  • Consequence: A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dealers will update the radio software or the software will be OTA, "Over-The-Air," free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning July 9, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's numbers for this recall are 66B and 79B.
2024-03-14
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) (Stellantis)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER CLOCKSPRING/SPIRAL CASSETTE
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) (Stellantis) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Ram 1500, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Wagoneer, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Chrysler Pacifica, Ram 3500, Ram 3500 cab chassis, Ram 2500, Ram 4500 cab chassis, Ram 5500 cab chassis, 2023 Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a GVWR less than 10,000 lbs., and Chrysler Voyager vehicles. The steering column control module may not be welded properly, which can prevent the driver's air bag from deploying in a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Negative 2023 Jeep Wagoneer car reviews

  1. Leonardo Kuphal 2025-01-09

I have had some issues with my vehicle since I purchased it 13 months ago. Unfortunately, I experienced some electrical issues within the first 14 hours of owning it. Since then, I have had to visit the dealership over 10 times for various issues, including problems with the paint and electrical system. Despite these issues, the dealership has been helpful in fixing the problems, although some have taken multiple visits to resolve. I have had to have several parts replaced, including the running boards and the driver's seat belt. Additionally, I have had some issues with the UConnect system, Bluetooth, and the car alarm. While it has been frustrating to deal with these issues, I am confident that the dealership will continue to provide support until my warranty expires. Overall, I am still happy with my purchase and look forward to enjoying my 2022 Grand Wagoneer Series 2 Obsidian + HD Trailer for many years to come.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Series II has had some issues, but I am confident that they can be resolved. While I understand the frustration of having to bring a vehicle in for repairs, I trust that the dealership is doing their best to fix the problems. It's important to note that minor issues like the radio not working are not indicative of a larger problem. I encourage the owner to continue working with the dealership to address the more serious issues like the power steering and adaptive cruise control. I believe that with proper attention and care, this vehicle can be a safe and reliable mode of transportation for the owner and their family.

The vehicle is great. However, I had a bad experience with the remote app and customer service. When I called about being locked out of my vehicle due to app malfunctions, the customer service reps were offensive and unhelpful. Unfortunately, this experience has made me decide not to own another wagoneer.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Wagoneer II that I purchased 15 months ago. Recently, I noticed that one of the rear tires is completely bald, which was a bit concerning. Unfortunately, when I went to the dealership, I was told that the tires were not covered by warranty. This was a bit disappointing, especially since my previous cars, a Chevy Suburban and a GMC Yukon Denali, never had tire issues before 50,000 miles. The dealer also recommended rotating the tires every oil change, which would require a 2 to 3 hour appointment every 8 weeks. This was a new experience for me, and I found it a bit inconvenient. If you're looking for a vehicle that doesn't require frequent visits to the repair shop, I would suggest considering one of the GMC products before paying more for a Jeep. Thanks for listening!

Great design, nice power, smooth ride. Love the interior. Although there were some problems, most of them have been fixed. As it was a first year run, I guess some issues were to be expected. Overall, I still enjoyed the experience and would recommend it.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Wagoneer! It sounds like you made a great choice with the Hemi V-8 engine and the 360 view. The SUV seems to be very spacious and comfortable, with good gas mileage. It's great to hear that you're satisfied with your purchase and that you find it to be the best large SUV on the market. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!

My wife and I love our Wagoneer! We received it in August of '22 and have had no issues. We previously owned a 2018 Expedition, which was a great vehicle, but the ride quality of the Wagoneer is unmatched.

  3. Boris Koelpin 2024-08-27

The Wagoneer is an awesome choice for a full-size SUV. It offers super comfy seats, great ride comfort, and a quiet cabin. However, it's worth noting that it can be a bit of a gas guzzler and parking spots can be tight.

  4. Raul Hill 2024-07-10

Great vehicle! It sounds like you're really enjoying it. It's roomy and has a super ride.

  5. Jefferey Pollich 2024-06-26

    Best SUV I've ever bought.
