Oldsmobile Alero 2000 problems
The Oldsmobile Alero is a midsize car that was produced by General Motors for its Oldsmobile division. Introduced in 1998 as a 1999 model, the Alero was the replacement for both the Achieva and Cutlass. The Alero was Oldsmobile's last new model nameplate, and — on April 29, 2004 — was also the last Oldsmobile manufactured.
History
The design of the Alero was originally previewed in 1997 with the Alero Alpha concept car, a V6-powered sport coupe that featured many design elements seen in the production Alero as well as some that were never meant for production. Its appearance was a revival of "coke bottle styling", popular during the 1960s and 1970s.
The Alero was sold either as a 4-door sedan or as a 2-door coupe. It shared its chassis and many parts, including engines, with the Pontiac Grand Am. All Aleros came in base GX, mid-level GL, or high-end GLS trim; the GL trim was split into three levels: 1, 2, and 3.
The Alero experienced minimal changes during its 5-year run. Most of these changes were either in choice of engines or options. In 2003, the Alero's daytime running lights were changed from high-beam to low-beam.
The Alero was also sold in select countries in Europe and in Israel between 1999 and 2001 as the Chevrolet Alero, and was only available as a sedan. The car still featured its Oldsmobile badges even though sold under the Chevrolet brand, but since most European consumers would not recognize the badging, Chevrolet badges were added to the grille and rear fascia for the 2000 model year. The Alero featured Chevrolet emblems throughout its entire run in Israel. The Alero was replaced in Europe, Israel, and Canada by the GM Daewoo-sourced Chevrolet Evanda/Epica.
The Alero's production ended with a special Final 500 Edition. These last 500 Aleros featured custom logos inspired by vintage Oldsmobile logos, dark cherry metallic paint, and a plate featuring the car's number out of 500. The final Alero Final 500 Edition (#500 of 500), a GLS 4-door, also happened to be the final Oldsmobile ever built, and was signed under its hood by the employees of the General Motors Lansing plant. The final car left the Lansing Assembly Plant on April 29, 2004 and was then given to the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum. On December 15, 2017, this car was sold at auction for $42,000 to a dealer in Florida.
A preview of the planned replacement for the Alero was seen in 2001 with the unveiling of the Oldsmobile O4 concept, designed by Bertone. The car was an open-top 4-seater with European styling featuring some Oldsmobile traits, and powered by the latest Ecotec I4 engine. The name had multiple meanings, including "Oldsmobile 4-Seater" as well as implying 2004 as a planned date for production.
However, the O4 concept was unveiled a few weeks after General Motors announced that they would be phasing out the Oldsmobile brand, meaning that production possibilities of the O4 would never be realized. Because of this, a second generation Alero was never built and the car was phased out with the Oldsmobile brand in 2004.

Oldsmobile Alero 2000 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the Oldsmobile Alero 2000.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.
- Manufacturer: DELPHI
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICES
- Summary: CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, P/NOS. FP10020-11B1, FP10026-11B1, AND FP10027-11B1, SOLD AFTER JANUARY 9, 2007, AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE UNIVERSAL PRESSURE REGULATORS (UPR) WERE PRODUCED WITHOUT AN O'RING AND RETAINER.
- Consequence: FUEL MAY LEAK, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE HAZARD WARNING SWITCHES THAT MAY EXPERIENCE SOLDER JOINT CRACKING CAUSED BY RAPID TEMPERATURE TRANSITIONS AND THE SOLDERING PROCESS. IF SOLDER JOINT CRACKING OCCURS AND RESULTS IN AN OPEN CIRCUIT, THE TURN SIGNALS/HAZARD LAMPS BECOME INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE.
- Consequence: WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS ARE INOPERATIVE, THE DRIVER CANNOT USE THEM TO SIGNAL INTENT TO TURN THAT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HAZARD WARNING SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH MANUAL TRANSAXLES (RPO M86) FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 114, "THEFT PROTECTION." WHEN A DRIVER ATTEMPTS TO SHIFT FROM 5TH GEAR TO REVERSE, A SHIFT INHIBITOR CAUSES THE TRANSMISSION TO BE MECHANICALLY IN 4TH GEAR EVEN THOUGH THE SHIFT LEVER INDICATES REVERSE GEAR.
- Consequence: IN THIS SITUATION, THE KEY CAN BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION WHILE THE TRANSMISSION IS IN A FORWARD GEAR, WHICH IS NOT PERMITTED BY THE STANDARD.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL DISABLE THE 5TH/REVERSE INHIBITOR BY REMOVING A RETAINING PIN AND REPLACE THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STRUCTURE:BODY
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: THESE VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE OCCUPANT PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 201, "OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN INTERIOR IMPACT." THE CONSOLE COVER ON THESE VEHICLES DOES NOT STAY CLOSED WHEN A SPECIFIED VERTICAL LOAD IS APPLIED.
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE CONSOLE COVER COULD OPEN AND THE COVER OR ITEMS STORED UNDER IT COULD INJURE AN OCCUPANT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CONSOLE LATCH MECHANISM.

This car has been great! You've had it for almost 4 years and haven't had any problems with it.
-
This car was purchased 3 years ago with about 40,000 miles. In the past 11 months, I've put another 20,000+ miles on it. I've taken multiple trips from E TN to FL, VA, TX, GA, and DC, as well as a 40-mile commute to work every day. I must say, this is a fantastic little car for both city and long-distance driving! It feels like driving a sporty car, with great handling and power getting on and off the interstate and around these mountain curves. I've found that it responds better if you keep up with a regular maintenance schedule. I run this car very hard, and I'm extremely pleased with it so far. As I set out for another trip to TX, I have no doubt that this little car will get me there and back with pleasure!

You have a good strong car built by GM. It has served you well, and although you have had to replace some parts, it is definitely a well-built car. You have experienced some of the issues mentioned by others, such as the peeling dash and paint problems on the hood, but overall you are satisfied with the car. In town, you get about 20mpg when driving aggressively, but on the highway, you get closer to 36mpg, which is pretty impressive for a car with decent umph. The steering, throttle, and brakes are much more responsive than many Japanese cars you have driven.

This is a great ride! It's sporty and has great acceleration for a 170 HP engine. I really like its cornering ability, there's no push in the tight corners. The layout is good and the night lighting is excellent. The ride is solid and the handling capability is excellent. I'm very satisfied mechanically, but I'm looking for a softer and more plush ride.

This has been a great car overall. I really appreciate the traction control and ABS. On the highway, this car gets over 30 miles to the gallon, even with the air conditioner on. Although there were some small problems, such as the strut and driver window power motor breaking, they were all fixed with the warranty.

This car is definitely stylish and fun to drive. The front is roomy and I love the air flow to the back seat. The removable ash tray that turns into a cup holder is a great feature too! However, I have experienced some mechanical problems with the car. I have had to replace the brake rotors twice, the water pump, and I am currently experiencing issues with the fan and the blinker switch noise (which I'm sure anyone who has one knows what I'm talking about). I have also had some problems starting the car due to an electrical issue, all before reaching 75,000 miles. Thankfully, I have an extended warranty that covers me up to 85,000 miles. While it may not be the most mechanically dependable car I've ever owned, I still enjoy driving it.

I am extremely disappointed with the quality of the car. Despite paying 11k and only driving 50k miles, the trade-in offer of 2.5k was a significant loss due to the rapid depreciation. The car had numerous irritating problems with the electrical and workmanship. Although there were no major issues in the first 50k miles, I did not want to wait for them to occur. Ultimately, I decided to sell the car at a loss because I did not trust it for the long haul. In light of this experience, I chose to switch to a Honda and have been much more satisfied with their products.

This car has had several issues, including brake failure at 9000 miles, fuel pump replacement at 23000 miles, and power steering pump replacement at 31000 miles. Additionally, the doors have required multiple repairs, the fuel gauge is inaccurate, and the windows have had issues. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my ability to address these problems and ensure the car is running smoothly.

I've had this car for 5 years now and unfortunately, it's been quite a hassle. I've had to replace the brakes/rotors every year and even had to replace the radiator back in '04. Recently, it's been constantly overheating and I took it in today to get it checked out. They told me that the head was cracked and the pistons were loose! I've put more money into repairs than what I originally bought it for. Looks like it's time to head to the dealership and find a different car!
