2010 Volkswagen Routan problems
The Volkswagen Routan is a seven-seat minivan and rebadged variant of the Chrysler RT platform, with revised styling, content features, and suspension tuning from the fifth-generation Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.
Manufactured alongside the Chrysler and Dodge minivans at Windsor Assembly and marketed in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Routan debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and went on sale in the United States in September of the same year as a 2009 model. The Routan's minivan variants include the Dodge Caravan, Ram C/V, Chrysler Town & Country, and Lancia Voyager (export)—that by 2009 have ranked as the 13th best-selling automotive nameplate worldwide, with over 12 million sold.
Production of the Routan was halted in 2012 due to high inventory levels, and Volkswagen announced the 2013 model year would be primarily reserved for rental car companies and other fleets, with limited availability to the public at dealer showrooms. This also held for the 2014 model year Routan.

- Summary: While driving the car the car shut off causing an issue with the steering and brakes. This is the second time this has happened. in trying to duplicate the issue, with the car in park and running we were able to duplicate it by wiggling the key fob while it is in the switch. We were able to do this 3x. We search out a recall notice for our year, make and model related to this issue. When we called our VW dealer we were informed that our vehicle does not have any open recalls. We contacted VW customer service and we were told the same. Our particular VIN was built in the middle of recalls related to this exact issue and no previous repairs were done. The customer service Rep could not see a reason why ours is not covered but that they go strictly by the VIN. Our vehicle was built 03/2010 and the recall numbers we are reading are 15V194000 and 11V151000. We are experiencing the same issue and our vehicle was built within the recall period so I want to understand why ours is not part of the recall for this issue.

- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-18
- VIN: 2V4RW3D17AR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Hi - I have a 2010 VW Volkswagen that has an issue with headlights intermittently working, which is very hazardous and also the windshield wipers randomly turn on and the car was intermittently starting (now won’t start at all since 7/18/2021) among other things. Car appears to not be starting due to fuel relay with TIPM. The intermittent headlights is very dangerous but corrects itself in a few days so mechanics haven’t been able to figure it out. This car is related to the several Chrysler models from 2010-2014 (it states Chrysler on various parts of my VW Routan) that had a recall for issues with the TIPM box, which appears to be the issue with my vehicle. As far as I can tell the same recall was not issued for the Routan. Why? I’ve found many similar descriptions of Routan owners that have had the same issues I have and these go back to the TIPM. Will there be a recall? There is one of many links detailing people with the same issues/concerns. https://www.change.org/p/matthias-mueller-volkswagen-of-america-volkswagen-of-america-recall-the-routan-due-to-a-major-safety-issue my Vin is [XXX]. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-09
- VIN: 2v4rw5dx4ar
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: 2010 VW Routan VIN:[XXX] We purchased the vehicle used in November of 2018. From November 2018 through early 2020, I experienced the car turning off while driving it about once every 4-6 months. When researching this issue we found that extra weight from other keys or keychains could be affecting it so we separated the car key from my house keys. This showed no improvement. From early 2020 through early 2021, the issue increased in frequency. Instead of once every 4-6 months it became once a month. And, unfortunately in the past 3 months, it has started occurring several times a week (sometimes multiple times a day). This has been a safety concern for our family and we are very nervous that this could cause a serious accident. Luckily the other vehicles around us when this occurs have been alert drivers that were able to give us the extra time to restart our vehicle. We realize that this won’t always be the case and need to get it fixed. The issues we are experiencing as outlined above are in line with the issues listed in NHTSA Campaign ID: 11V151000 for other 2010 VW Routans. However, for whatever reason, our VIN number is not included in the recall. I would like to make a formal appeal with nhtsa that our vehicle be included in this recall and that it be repaired by VW as it is quite clear that what we are experiencing is from the issue in this NHTSA Recall Campaign. We are disappointed to be in a position to fight for something to get fixed that is quite clearly caused by a defaulted part, but remain hopeful that this will be resolved in a timely manner. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-03-16
- VIN: 2V4RW3D17AR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I purchased this vehicle in March of 2015 when my vehicle shut down and rebooted itself while driving. Since 2019-present, my vehicle shuts off while driving and will restart back up maybe 5 mins, an hour or so later. The ABS, check engine, airbag, and other lights on the dashboards come on and remain on, in which, my car begins to make a beeping sound. the headlights, wipers, and sometimes my horn goes on and off by itself. When my vehicle shuts off, so does my ability to steer the wheel, it locks up. when I turn the air on in the car, my car begins to shake as well. Also, I have replaced my car battery, alternator, and starter two times this year and my vehicle still have the same issue.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-20
- VIN: 2V4RW3D19AR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS
- Summary: The TIPM is failing which is a common issue with the vehicle make/model. My particular vehicle was not covered under any recalls, however, I have the same tell tale TIPM failure issues as all of the cars that were part of the recall. My lights intermittently work which causes a safety hazard. They will either not turn at all, will turn on and start flashing, or will appear to be working as normal until I'm driving and then they will flash off intermittently. This puts anyone in my car as well as oncoming traffic at risk when my lights malfunction at night. The airbag warning indicator light also flashes off and on as well making me think that it may be failing whenever the TIPM is not functioning properly. The door locks and windows have also locked/unlocked and opened/closed at random (even when the vehicle is off and has been parked with the power off for hours). I spoke with the mechanic about all of these issues and he verified that it was likely a failing TIPM and that it is a well-known issue with the Routan. My vehicle is available for inspection any time. Volkswagen and Chrysler know that this is a common issue and yet they have put their customers in danger by not recalling all of the affected vehicles. I am not sure what date to put as the date of incident as this has been ongoing since I have owned the vehicle. I put the current date (as it happened just today) and mileage, however, please understand that this has been an ongoing issue for years and Volkswagen has failed to include my vehicle in any recalls even though this is a well-known issue.

2010 Volkswagen Routan recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2009 Routan vehicles manufactured June 25, 2008, to July 8, 2009, and 2010 Routan vehicles manufactured October 1, 2009, to August 11, 2010. This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including, but not limited to, air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch and key FOBs, free of charge. The recall began on June 23, 2015. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 28H1. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 11V151 and 14V396. Vehicles that previously received an ignition switch trim ring as a recall remedy must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign. Vehicles that have already received a new ignition switch are not covered by this campaign.
- Manufacturer: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010 ROUTAN VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 2009 THROUGH JUNE 2010. SOME VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE INADVERTENT IGNITION KEY DISPLACEMENT FROM THE RUN TO ACCESSORY POSITION WHILE DRIVING CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SHUT OFF.
- Consequence: AN ENGINE SHUTTING OFF SUDDENLY WHILE DRIVING COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE WIN MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JUNE 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

This vehicle is truly amazing! It has every feature you could possibly want, all at a very reasonable price. From navigation and MP3 capabilities to a backup camera and hands-free phone audio, this minivan has it all. Plus, with premium leather and shades, it's both comfortable and stylish. Even though I never thought I'd buy a minivan, I was completely won over after test driving this one while waiting for paperwork on another vehicle. It comfortably fits my husband, myself, our five children, and even leaves room for the in-laws! What more could you ask for?
-
Our family has a long history with VWs. We've owned Bugs, 2 Sciroccos, a Vanagon, Passat, Golf, and even a Thing! However, we haven't been loyal to the VW brand for the past 15 years, as we felt there were better options available. Recently, we decided to give the Routan a chance, mainly because of its attractive pricing. It was discounted by almost $6,000. Although we know that it's a badge-engineered Chrysler and we've seen both the Grand Caravan and Town & Country up close, the Routan has a distinctly European flair about it. In the end, we paid the same price as a Dodge but got a great VW in return. It definitely has a more upscale feel compared to Chrysler.
-
This is a fantastic minivan among the choices available. You get the space you need with style, which makes it stand out from the boring Honda, Toyota, and Kia models. I love that it has the VW tag on it, even though it's made by Chrysler. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this car!
-
We've had this van for around 3 months now and we absolutely love it, except for the gas mileage. Since we drive about 800 miles a week, fuel efficiency is a top priority for us. Currently, we're averaging about 20 miles per gallon. Initially, we were a bit apprehensive about the quality of the van, especially since it's manufactured by Chrysler and even has Mopar branding on some of the engine components and parts. However, we're happy to report that we haven't experienced any issues so far. We've come to realize that just because it's made by Chrysler, doesn't mean it's a typical Chrysler vehicle. VW has definitely improved the comfort and style of this van. Our 3-year-old is particularly fond of the entertainment center.
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I think this van is absolutely fantastic. It's definitely the most stylish and comfortable one I've come across in my search. This is actually my first time owning a VW, but I can already tell that it won't be my last!

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced with your mini van, which has been relied upon heavily as a family vehicle, especially for transporting your grandkids to and from school. The van was purchased new in 2010, and while there were some initial safety concerns with a vibration in the body when the brake was applied, the dealership was able to fix it as a factory defect. Later, you had to take it back to the dealership for a number of alarms in the instrumentation panel. Recently, you noticed white smoke coming from the engine, and had it towed back to the dealership to replace a part of the cooling system that caused the coolant to leak. Unfortunately, this repair is not covered by the extended warranty, and you had to pay over $600. While this has been a frustrating experience, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Thank you for your feedback.

The Routon's unique appearance caught our attention, and as a young couple, we were pleased to drive it without feeling embarrassed. It provided a comfortable ride, especially for our young children who enjoyed the DVD system and Xbox inputs. However, we were disappointed when the van began to shake while braking, and upon inspection, the front rotors were found to be faulty at only 20k miles. Although the dealer fixed the issue, the shaking returned 7k miles later, this time with the back rotors. Due to concerns about future breakdowns, we decided to trade in the van.

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with a SEL Premium CARB that I bought from a dealer in Columbus, OH on 6/19/10. Unfortunately, I've noticed some rust around the left rear wheel well less than a month after taking it off the dealer's lot. The dealer asked me to drive to VW's authorized body shop for an estimate, and it turns out that the repair will cost $1100.00. It's important to get this fixed properly, as the rust could eat away at the van's body from the inside out. Thank you for listening to my story!

After driving two different Odysseys for eight years, I decided to lease a Routan instead. My decision was driven by a desire for change and economics. I must admit that Honda's color schemes can be a bit boring. However, the Routan's final sticker price was a small advantage. Unfortunately, long-term use revealed the Routan's true colors. It is at least 30% less fuel-efficient than the Odyssey, which translates to a higher per month cost. Whatever I saved at purchase was an illusion. Most importantly, the Routan has some issues. It can be a bit clunky over bumps and engaging into gear. The power side doors sometimes lock up and the transmission frequently sticks in low. I would not recommend getting a Routan, but that's just my personal experience.

I will never purchase a Volkswagen vehicle again. In 2010, I bought a Routan for $40K, but after only two years, the company discontinued production of that model. When I tried to sell the vehicle, even a Volkswagen dealer only offered $12K. I chose to keep the van and spent thousands of dollars on repairs each year, often struggling to find the necessary parts. Eventually, I sold the vehicle for only $5K. This experience has convinced me to avoid Volkswagen in the future.
