STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- Summary: Months back there were times the power steering would go out, it would be for short amount of times and always came back. As of 40+ days ago the power steering has totally gone out and has not once come back. The dash says "power steering assist fault" The other issue is the wrench on the dash. It's normally after driving for quite some time. Even if there has been a break on the car while grocery shopping etc. when it comes on the car goes into limp mode. VERY DANGEROUS as we cannot tell when it'll happen. There has been multiple times the light turns green we take off, get to about 15-20MPH and she just stops. The dash reads to safetly pull over and I believe it says to shut off the car. This has been happening for 5+ months. There is also random over heating when that happens. This is based on how I remember it. Because of the safety issues I have not driven the vehicle. My husband drives it because he can handle no power steering better then me... Not that it's better for anyone to use..

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-03-01
- VIN: 4M2CU87789K
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: My SUV was part of a recall due to the electronic power steering failing. My SUV was allegedly repaired by the cheapest of the three available options (computer reset or some such process). I bought my SUV in 2020. The electronic power steering slowly started going out intermittently and then more frequently over time, but is now completely out. The dealer tested my SUV and stated that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. They claim that the problem has nothing to do with the recall, but I don't believe them. My issue is the exact same issue that prompted the recall in the first place. I should not have to pay for a failed recall repair. I think it's possible that the original dealership faked the repair, or simply chose the cheapest (but not proper) option to save themselves time and money. My shoulder is now damaged due to driving without power steering for so long. I need an honest evaluation of my vehicle and an investigation into whether or not the original dealer performed the proper repair. I would assume that the issue wouldn't come back if it had been repaired properly the first time.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-08
- VIN: 4M2CU97G29K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: About 3 months ago, my power steering started to fail. After researching to find out the problem, we learned that my car does not have a power steering pump, as it is electronic. I learned that my car had a recall from Ford pertaining to the power steering failing. I called Ford and they told me that my car was part of the recall and was "fixed" in 2015. A month ago I took it to a Ford dealership to have them do a diagnostic on my car and they informed me that it was my power steering torque sensor, which I already knew this by researching the issue. The issue now lies in the fact that the part is on back order and there is no available date. I believe that Ford should have replaced the parts needed instead of doing a "bandaid fix" by doing a software update, which they knew would not be the fix to the problem. Ford got away with not fixing something that is very dangerous to those who drive the Mercury Mariners. Mine is an 2009 and it is now dangerous on the highways to drive. I would like to add that while driving my car now with this issue, my battery light comes on, which is also a known issue to Ford.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-04
- VIN: 4M2CU81799K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Driving and my steering totally quit...almost wrecked it was so hard to control. Had not had any previous issues prior to this. I had my vehicle towed to mechanic and code that came up says steering assist has failed and will need to replace whole steering column assembly. There was no warning light...nothing! Upon my research, I see this is a frequent problem and there was a recall (1 million vehicles) but only for certain models, and of course mine is not one, in fact I haven't read any reports where the steering column was replaced, only reprogrammed and then the problem comes back. My car was manufactured at the Kansas City plant, which I have seen complaints numerous times for this problem coming out of this facility. Mechanic contacted Ford to inquire about the part...was told it was a 6 month minimum time to get the parts!! 6 months...am I just SOL for 6 months since my car cannot be driven safely? I purchased a Ford because they were not part of the government buyout...big mistake. At this point, I cant have it repaired with no parts. They know this is an ongoing problem, yet refuse to do anything about it.
STEERING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-06
- VIN: 4M2CU97GX9K
- Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I have been intermittently losing power steering. The code is B1342. After researching, it looks like Ford is aware of this problem but is unwilling to fix the issue. This fix must be done at a dealership since it is a software issue and going to cost $2,000. Obviously losing power steering when going at fast speeds is incredibly dangerous for myself and others. There is no check engine light that comes on when the issue arises.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-04-01
- VIN: 4M2CU87789K
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Electronic Power Steering System, which was part of a previous recall, and was allegedly fixed, but continues to experience the same loss of power steering. This is a continual problem, meaning that it is not a one time incident. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection at any time. When the power steering goes out while driving, the steering wheel jerks to one side, and feels like a lock-up. The vehicle is still drivable, but can be dangerous in a situation where attempting to avoid an obstacle, could result in an inability to do so, because the maneuvers are being executed for a vehicle with power steering, so when it goes out, those same corrections will not successfully avoid a collision. The dealership is aware of the problem. They did a system check and insist that the steering column needs to be replaced, and that it has nothing to do with the previous recall, but it is exactly the same problem involved with the recall, therefore I do not believe they are differing issues. I believe the initial recall repair was unsuccessful, or the wrong fix. There were three or four options for fixing the issue. There are no warning lights that come on prior to the power steering going out, but a click can be heard however, at the exact moment when the mechanism for the power steering goes out. The same click can be heard when the vehicle is started and the power steering does come on. It usually comes on when it is cold outside. It will then go out once the car gets warm. I bought the car in January of 2000, and I did not experience the issue for a few months. When it did start happening, it was only once in a while - maybe every few months. The problem started happening more frequently with time, with the current status being that the power steering is predominantly not working.

The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the dealer diagnosed that the failure was related to the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact was then transferred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 132,596.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-24
- VIN: 4M2CU81G69K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While driving vehicle brakes all of sudden go to the floor, no pedal response. This has happened a couple of times without warning. Once when I was approaching an intersection and light changed. My brakes all of the sudden went to the floor and I had to downshift and cut my wheels toward the curb to stop from crashing. Then a couple days later attempting to get it to mechanic it was fine and pumped properly. I wrote it off as a fluke. Then a few months later it happened again. My mechanic can't seem to find the issue and has charged me for new brakes, new master cylinder, new brake line, and another part for the abs power assistant. My car still continues to have this brake malfunction on and off. Somebody is going to end up getting hurt. This obviously is some kind of part defect. Please help!

2009 Mercury Mariner recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2009 Mercury Mariner.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured August 18, 2006, through September 11, 2010. The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. As a result, the system could remove the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I've been driving my Mariner for a year and a half now and I've really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I recently had my first accident ever and I'm waiting to hear back about whether or not my car is totaled. Despite the accident, I feel incredibly lucky to have walked away unharmed thanks to all of the airbags that went off. Safety is definitely a top priority for me and my family. I have to say, the gas mileage on this car is great and the dealer has been fantastic. I wouldn't even consider buying anything else! Thanks for listening.

We opted for a smaller car for insurance and economy purposes, despite always having suburbans. Although we considered a hybrid, the replacement battery cost of $8000 and high initial car price made it unfeasible. However, we are extremely satisfied with our current car. The 4 cylinder engine is adequate, and the gas mileage is impressive. While the seats are a bit short for the thigh, the heated leather seats are a great feature. We would prefer if Ford offered 6 way power for all seats. We have been averaging 24 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway, and have not experienced any maintenance issues in the 8000 miles we have driven so far. We have taken the car to the beach and mountains without any issues. Although we have experienced a few

I have been driving this vehicle for 2 months and I am thrilled with the MPG. I am getting 25 mpg in the city and got 29.5 on my one highway trip. These figures exceed the numbers on the window sticker. For those who worry about performance, you need not. It is surprisingly snappy for a four cylinder, and I think the 6-speed transmission helps.

Earlier this year, I purchased a 2009 Honda CRV. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the most uncomfortable car I've ever owned, which was really disappointing. However, after 8 months and 12,500 miles, I decided it was time to replace it. That's when I test drove the Mariner and it was a game changer. The comfort level was amazing and I was sold. The dealer even let me take the car for the morning and I drove over 90 miles during the test drive. The car is excellent and has great features like bluetooth and iPod ports. I'm now looking for a new phone and speech recognizable player to match the features of the car. If you're considering a CRV, I highly recommend checking out the Mariner.

I never expected to buy a Ford product, as I haven't owned one in over 25 years. However, after looking at several options, including the CRV, RAV4, and Saturn Vue, I decided to take a look at Ford/Mercury. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Mariner was the best combination of styling, comfort, power, and features. Although the Saturn had my favorite styling, the seating was not comfortable and it was smaller than the competition. The CRV had bland styling and lacked cool features like Bluetooth. The RAV4 had roomy seating, but the interior looked cheap and the spare tire on the door was a downside. I particularly like the Mariner's styling, especially the front grille and rear taillights, which I find more appealing than those on the Ford Escape.

Hello! I wanted to share some information with you that you might find helpful. It turns out that the capless fuel system that Ford has been installing on nearly all its vehicles for the past two years can sometimes leak when you top off the gas tank. My dealership confirmed this issue in both 2009 and 2010 models. While Ford will not make any repairs for this, they do advise customers not to top off the gas tank. I hope this information helps!

We have had a difficult experience with our car, unfortunately. With 26,000 miles, we have already had to replace the transmission twice, and the current one is still not functioning properly. It has spent more than 60 days in the shop this year alone. My wife is understandably nervous to drive it, as it sometimes shifts into the wrong gear at the worst possible moment. We have found others online and in person who have also experienced transmission issues. While there are some nice features, they do not make up for the problems we have faced. If you are considering this car, we suggest waiting for Ford to address the transmission issues before making a purchase.

My 2009 Mariner Premier V6 AWD was running perfectly when I bought it last April. However, after experiencing some transmission issues, I brought it back to the dealership. They informed me that this is a known issue with the 2009 Mariner and proceeded to fix the transmission. Unfortunately, the warning light for the powertrain fault came on and I had to take it back in. After a thorough diagnosis, they discovered that the issue was related to the computer and the transmission had to be taken out to fix it. Although this is frustrating for a one-year-old car, I am confident that the dealership will resolve the issue and ensure that my car runs smoothly.

Within the first 6000 miles, I noticed that the transmission was making a clunking sound. I took it to the dealership and was informed that it was a characteristic of the transmission. Although it is loud and sometimes takes a second to engage, resulting in a clunk, I am confident that the dealership will be able to address this issue. Unfortunately, the material on the driver's seat has become loose and puckered up where I sit, which is not ideal. Despite weighing only 120 lbs and being the only driver, the seat looks terrible. On a positive note, Sync is a great feature for phones, but unfortunately, it is not compatible with my cell phone. I had some difficulty figuring out the Media, but the dealership was able to assist me. As someone who buys a new car every 2 years, I was hesitant to purchase an American car, but I am glad I did. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and look forward to addressing these minor issues with the dealership.

I test drove a 6 cylinder and bought a 4. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues during my trip as the SUV had a vibration at every stop. I returned it to the dealer to get it repaired, but they were unable to fix the problem. I have had several issues with the sensors, tires, dash, and throttle. Recently, I noticed that the frame in the sunroof had rusted and it clogged the drain. When I took it to a Ford dealer to explain the issue, the service guy said that it was very hard to find leaks, but he never looked at the sunroof. Despite these issues, I appreciate the effort of the service team. However, I have decided not to buy a Ford product again.
