2022 Subaru Crosstrek problems

The Subaru Crosstrek (Japanese: スバル・クロストレック, Hepburn: Subaru Kurosutorekku) (also known as the Subaru XV globally for the first two generations) is a compact crossover SUV produced by Subaru since 2012. It is a successor to the Outback Sport in the United States and Canada, and the Impreza XV globally. Like the Outback Sport, the Crosstrek is a lifted Impreza hatchback with minor differences, though with a more substantial lift than the Outback Sport.
Initially, the vehicle was marketed as the XV globally, and as the XV Crosstrek in the United States and Canada. In 2015, Subaru dropped the XV moniker in the United States and Canada, marketing it simply as the Crosstrek for the 2016 model year and onward. In 2022, Subaru introduced the third-generation model, using the Crosstrek nameplate globally for the first time.
All generations of the Crosstrek are raised versions of the Subaru Impreza hatchback.

Common 2022 Subaru Crosstrek problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, the most common problems reported are:
- Brake light switch failure: Another common problem is the failure of the brake light switch, leading to the brake lights not illuminating when the brake pedal is pressed. This issue poses safety risks as other drivers may not see the Crosstrek braking, especially at night. Subaru issued a recall in 2019 due to this problem, which is often caused by cleaning products clogging up the switches.
- Heavy consumption of oil: Owners have reported heavy oil consumption in some Crosstrek models with the F-series Boxer engine. Subaru attributes this issue to looser tolerances, causing these models to burn oil at a faster rate compared to the average vehicle. Some owners have to frequently top off the oil to prevent damage to the engine and other components of the SUV.
These problems highlight some common issues faced by owners of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, impacting the functionality, safety, and maintenance of the vehicle.

- Summary: I reached out to a local dealership to trade in my car. Upon getting there, they told me that I am in need of new tires. The car has only been driven 25k miles and they stated that new tires are needed. I have gone to this dealership prior and not once have they stated otherwise indicating or checking the issue as to why this is happening to this car. If it was something due to an alignment, then why was this not checked and indicated before the car’s tires are being worn out? Or, is this a manufacturer defect? Now, I have to get new tires on a car that has barely made it past 25k miles.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-27
- VIN: JF2GTAEC3NH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The windshield is weak and cracks at a small piece of gravel going less than 40mph. I have had this 2022 crosstrek for less than a year and it has received a crack. My 2019 crosstrek received 4 windshield replacements due to cracking windshields. As a driver, I feel that Subaru has a weak windshield that cannot sustain any amount of trauma which feels unsafe. If one pebble can crack my windshield that blocks my visibility, I cannot see when I drive. This is dangerous. Subaru needs to address these issues.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-28
- VIN: JF2GTHNC6N8
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Its widely known that Subaru has a problem with their windshields dating back to 2015. There have been several class action lawsuits wherein their windshields crack for NO reason. My windshield cracked and it was determined there was an impact point where the crack propagated. I contest that based on their sub-standard windshields, there is not way to determine impact vs non-impact crack formation. The repair for the windshield was quoted at $1300!! Part of the quote includes re-calibrating the eyesight technology which is required. Subaru's recommendation was to file a comprehensive insurance claim. My insurance company, Progressive, indicated that this type of claim, while comprehensive, would cause a rate increase. Subaru refused to conduct a 3 way call with Progressive to discuss the matter. I wonder why? There are countless claims of subaru windshields cracking. Any impact whatsoever will result in an unrepairable crack. A reputable windshield replacement personnel told me most folks simply can't afford a window replacement and continue to drive with a crack. Subaru's windshields can't possibly meet current automotive standards for window integrity. If window replacement costs are in excess of $1000 and in some cases exceed $2000, nobody will be able to afford the repair resulting in unsafe conditions. Saddling the insurance companies cost everyone - particularly when their are inherent design flaws with Subaru windshields.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-20
- VIN: JF2GTHNC6N8
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was travelling down a 3-lane road wherein another vehicle in front of me, several car lengths away, merged into the middle lane to turn left. The turning vehicle approached the intersection and was stopped several seconds waiting for opposite traffic to clear to make their turn. As I proceeded through the intersection at 55MPH, the eyesight technology must have falsely locked on the vehicle in the turn lane and applied the automatic emergency braking. This resulted in a sudden skidding and a near miss rear-end collision from a vehicle behind me. I was able to apply the gas and avoid being rear-ended. I immediately disarmed the pre collision braking, called Subaru, and gave them an ear-full. they recommended having the eyesight re-calibrated.
STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-11
- VIN: JF2GTHRC6NH
- Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: My lane keeping assistance feature was turned on by someone else. Nobody has access to my vehicle and I keep it armed when away from the vehicle. In addition, I noted the vehicle was well within the street lines. There was no reason to take control of the wheel. Given I was not driving outside street lines, I worried about the possibility that someone was controlling the wheel. A dealer has not confirmed or reproduced the problem. The vehicle has not been inspected regarding my issue; however, it is a brand new vehicle. No accidents have occurred. There were no warning signs. I finally noted the lane keeping assist icon was turned on. But again, there was no reason to take control of the wheel. I have also noted the door locking system has been behaving strangely, unlocking, locking unexpectedly. My key fob works properly. The incidents started to happen at the beginning of December 2022. The latest occurrence happened more recently. As a result, I decided to report the incidents. Thank you.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-14
- VIN: JF2GTABC2N8
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: noticed a crack in windshield (out of no where, no stone hit our car). crack started in the middle bottom of windshield. crack was 5 times the size the next day! VERY DANGEROUS!
STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-27
- VIN: JF2GTHSC0NH
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Driving on freeway, keeping a regular and safe distance from other vehicles around me, when all the suddenly I hear a loud boom. Didn’t see anything fly at my car, like rocks, things off other cars, etc. Then, immediately after I pulled over with my hazards on, I thought I had popped a tire, but I heard air whooshing through something like my window was rolled down. But all of my windows were fine and rolled up, except for my sunroof/moonroof. The glass moon/sunroof had shattered into tiny pieces. If my internal cover wasn’t covering the opening, then I probably would’ve gotten cut my glass dropping in on me. Not safe at all to have glass moon/sunroofs spontaneously explode.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-15
- VIN: JF2GTDECXNH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: When starting the vehicle in a narrow area, the reverse automatic braking will sometimes activate. This causes the anti-lock brake system to actuate while the car is backing up making a rapid clicking noise. After backing up approximately 6-8 feet, the vehicle will stall, the steering wheel will lock, and all warning dash lights such as "check engine" will be on. Air conditioning codes are triggered U0401 (confirmed - invalid data received from ECM/PCM "A"), and U0416 (Invalid Data Received from Vehicle Dynamics Control Module). Powering off the vehicle for a minute or two and starting the vehicle will return normal operation. This is a safety hazard if the car stalls when backing out from a driveway into a busy intersection. The car will also stall by locking the steering wheel and showing check engine and other errors on the dash, as well as activating the U0401 + U0416 codes when starting the vehicle (push button + brake), and then rapidly shifting out of park, and then using the accelerator. When this occurs, the hybrid system will not start, and the engine will not turn over. No power is transferred to the transmission.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-26
- VIN: JF2GTHNC5NH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Had the car for about 3 months, I was driving and the window chipped pretty easily. Got that window chip repaired, and not long after that, I noticed another chip happen, small one but the windshield should not be chipping this easily.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-24
- VIN: Jf2gtapc4n8
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: I was driving about 55 mph on a county highway and an animal appeared in the road. I hit the brakes suddenly, and my work bag containing my laptop and file folders that I had placed on the backseat behind my driver seat Flew forwards and hit the back of my seat. I felt the impact in my spine, And by the next morning I had moderate back pain moving and breathing as if my ribs were bruised. I can only imagine what would happen if I was going at a faster speed on the freeway (locally the speed limit is 70 mph, but people typically drive 80 mph). This morning my husband was just tapping on the backseat with his hands and I could feel everything while sitting in the front. I am disappointed in the car and afraid to put things in the back seat. I feel as if having a solid or semi solid barrier built inside the seat back would have been a no-brainer safety feature.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-25
- VIN: JF2GTHNC7N8
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Windshield cracked after 3 weeks. Was hit by a very small rock when travelling at 30 mph, and a 10 inch crack appeared. In 40+ years of driving, I have never had a rock cause that much damage to a windshield, even at 60 mph.

This is the car we chose when we were looking to streamline our finances and get more mileage out of our vehicle.

I recently purchased a Crosstrek and I must say, I prefer it over my Subaru Forester. The Crosstrek has a sporty look and the 2.0 engine provides enough power that I can't even tell the difference from my Forester's larger engine. It has no problem reaching highway speeds.

I recently purchased a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Premium in June and have driven it for over 5000 miles. It's a comfortable car with plenty of legroom for all passengers, although the acceleration is a bit sluggish as expected from a 4-cylinder engine. The trunk size is adequate, although smaller than my previous 2008 Subaru Outback. However, there are a few things that I find annoying. For instance, the car dings and reminds me to check the back seat every time I turn it off, even when it's empty. Although this feature may be helpful for some, I don't find it useful and unfortunately, there's no way to turn it off. Additionally, I don't like the eyesight feature as it can be dangerous. One time, while driving on a two-lane highway, the eyesight detected a slow car in the right lane and slowed me down from 70mph to 50mph while I was passing it. This incident made me lose trust in the eyesight feature. Another annoyance is the bright amber light on the dashboard that appears when the Anti-Collision Braking and/or Lane Departure Warning is turned off. This light is very distracting, especially when driving at night. I wish the indicator was placed next to the button to turn it on and off. Lastly, I find it inconvenient to turn off the Anti-Collision Braking every time I get in the car. It would be great if the car could remember my preferences. Overall, I enjoy driving my Crosstrek and appreciate its features, but these few annoyances could be improved. One issue I have with the cruise control, whether it's the adaptive cruise or the regular normal cruise, is that when you toggle the switch to adjust your speed, it moves you to the next increment of 5mph. It would be more convenient if it could be adjusted by 1mph at a time without having to press and hold the switch. Changing the speed by 5mph at a time can be noticeable in the car, either accelerating aggressively or braking. I prefer a smooth speed adjustment. I don't see a reason to ever need to change your speed by 5mph instantly that I wouldn't just turn off cruise for. Another thing I don't like is the position of the paddle shifters. I don't use shifters as I purchased the Automatic for a reason. Every once in a while when I'm trying to press a button to change the menu or using turn signal or high beams, I will accidentally hit the paddle shifter so the car drops a gear and the engine revs a lot, you feel a jolt as the speed isn't properly matched to the rpms for that gear. It's just annoying. It does this even when you don't have the car in manual mode. It must be used for passing because after about 10-15 seconds it resolves itself if you don't do anything, but I don't think this should happen at all if you don't have it in manual mode, that's just dangerous. In my 2008 Outback, both of its keys had something wrong with them so the batteries would die within a couple of days. I just got used to having to put the key in the door and turn it to unlock the old fashioned way like I've had to do with every other vehicle I've owned. With this new Crosstrek, this isn't a good option. If you try to unlock the car using the key, the alarm will go off. From my research, the only way to prevent this is to put the car in valet mode which turns off the security alarm entirely. So, you have two options: either don't have a security alarm or have the alarm go off when you unlock the car. Since this new key actually unlocks the car by pressing the button, you may not need to manually unlock the car. However, sometimes you may forget and trigger the alarm. This is just something to keep in mind for the future in case your key battery ever dies. My last issue may seem a bit nit-picky, but I don't like the automatic windows in the front. They are too sensitive and I have a bit of OCD when it comes to the window's position. It takes me forever to adjust the automatic window to the exact position I want. For example, if I want it down exactly 2 inches, I can't just stop it there like in most cars (even with automatic windows). Instead, I have to fight with the window to get it where I want it. Despite these minor issues, I do like the car. The orange stitching in the upholstery and the deep center console are nice touches. While it's hard not to compare it to my old Subaru Outback, which was made in 2008 when cars were made better and had fewer extra features, this car is still a decent choice. In general, I prefer basic cars. If they still made cars with crank windows and no entertainment console or backup camera, I would buy it in a heartbeat. However, with modern cars, you are limited to what they offer. In the 2022 economy, it was actually cheaper to buy this car new than it was to buy almost any used car that I looked at with less than 50k miles. All in all, it's a decent car. I would probably buy it again because the price was low and it drove better than some other new cars or SUVs that I looked at.

I purchased a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited model and I'm absolutely loving it! It's so easy to drive and maneuver in traffic, and it's a breeze to park. Plus, it's really great on gas! The ride is pretty quiet, and the speaker system is fantastic. It has all the bells and whistles of more expensive vehicles, which is amazing. I put a lot of miles on my vehicle, and I'm really looking forward to driving this Crosstrek for a long time!

1) I'm having trouble turning off the daytime running lights. 2) The seatbelt chime is still sounding even though the owner's manual says it can be changed. 3) I find the driver's seat very uncomfortable when reclined. 4) Unfortunately, there is no keyhole on the passenger side of the car. 5) I've noticed that when I use the non-fob key, it only locks the driver's door, leaving the rest of the car unlocked. 6) The car starts in fast idle and remains that way for quite a while, which can be a bit frustrating. 7) The mpg indicator is off by about 10% from the actual mpg. 8) I reached out to Subaru consumer advocacy about some of these issues back in August, but unfortunately, I still haven't received a response. 9) During my first service, I asked some questions at the dealer and was told to call New Jersey, who then told me to ask the dealer again. 10) Shifting can be a bit clunky. 11) The spare tire is upside down, which makes checking the pressure a bit more difficult. 12) Unfortunately, there isn't enough headroom to pack a wheelchair standing up.
Remington Anderson 2024-07-27
Unfortunately, due to the hybrid battery taking up some of the cargo space, a spare tire is not included with this car. However, overall it seems like a great option.
