- Summary: Our torque sensor needs replacing. McFarland Ford in Exeter said that the torque sensor was repaird via recall at First Ford in Fall River, MA 2014. We have NEVER had a problem with steering. First Ford in Fall River informed me that if we brought the vehicle in for an oil change, any recall item would have been checked, and if they found no problem with it at that time, it was reported, and that ended the recall status for our vehicle. Please, we need your help. My husband is 83; I am 70. This whole thing smells. How can checking something we had no problem with cancel a recall status on our vehicle. There was no warning. Our vehicle worked fine. We got in the next morning, and the steering wheel wouldn't turn.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4M2CU29HX8K
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My power steering light popped on about 6-9 months ago for about 10 seconds and then turned off. About a month ago now, I gently hit a boulder with my front right tire. I dented a couple of steering rods and something else. Got it fixed, and then when the repair guy was backing my car out of their shop, my car just turned on its own. It's the same issue that required a recall of the steering column in this car years ago. (I had it replaced as part of that recall in 2014.) I talked to 3 different Ford dealership parts departments. They all told me the same thing. "Hmm...this is very odd. I've never seen a part number changed so many times. They also changed the location of this specific factory...this is really odd. Right now, Ford is guaranteeing 300 steering columns being manufactured and released in September and another 300 in October. But there are over 850 people on the pre-order list." So tell me why, this part was recalled like 6+ years ago and all of a sudden now, these same parts are having the same issues. The power steering will just stop working whenever it wants. Every single ford parts guy I talked to at the 3 different Ford's I talked to said all of the above is very suspicious. "It seems like Ford never fixed the problem and it trying to cover their ass".

2008 Mercury Mariner recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2008 Mercury Mariner.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
- Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 Ford Escape hybrid electric vehicles manufactured October 13, 2003, to June 20, 2008, and 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles manufactured June 10, 2005, to June 20, 2008. The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating.
- Consequence: If the hybrid electronics system overheats, it may shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S19.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured August 18, 2006, through September 11, 2010. The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. As a result, the system could remove the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power steering control module (PSCM) and the instrument cluster module, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of the torque sensor signal or fault codes relating to the PSCM when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, the affected components will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on July 18, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S05.

Positive 2008 Mercury Mariner car reviews

Three years into owning my Mariner, my wife and I still comment on how solid of a car it is. We bought it as her daily driver that could handle snow well, and it has not disappointed us. We have taken it out in a couple of nasty storms to test its traction and it has never failed us. It gets 23 mpg, which is great. The size is perfect and it is very comfortable. I highly recommend it.
-
I purchased this Mariner used with high mileage (150K) because it was listed at a price that was 10k less than any other Mariner or Escape in the area. It has been an absolutely fantastic vehicle. Since my wife and I bought it, we have put another 50k on it, including multiple 8 hour+ drives across the country and up and down the east coast, and it has never let us down. We have only needed to perform basic maintenance (brakes, oil changes, tires) and have not had to do anything else. The gas mileage is fantastic, averaging 22.3 with ~24 on the highway and 18 in town, which is impressive for an AWD V6. It performs great in the snow, with the AWD working as it should, and I have never felt like I'm losing control. If we need to haul anything, we can put the back seats down and have acres of space. As for comfort, it's delightful. The leather heated seats keep you warm in the winter and are easy to clean and maintain, the A/C always blows cold, and the power windows and moonroof are great features. Overall, I would buy another one tomorrow without hesitation. Although I know there are some that have had issues, ours is a true gem.
-
I really love this car! It's been a while since I've been excited about a car, but this one makes me very happy. It gets great gas mileage, with 32mpg on the highway and 26-28mpg in the city! Even my husband, who is just under 7ft tall, can drive and sit in the car very comfortably. And when he's in the driver's seat, there's still plenty of leg room in the back seat. It drives great on the highway, and I've put a lot of highway miles on it. My son has already claimed it for when he gets his license. Plus, it has super cargo room! It's sporty, fun, and very economical to drive. I really think they should promote this vehicle more aggressively!
-
When you went to purchase this vehicle, you wanted everything on it and you got it. It's great to hear that you love almost everything about it. The fact that it looks way more expensive than what it actually cost is definitely a plus. It's classy and the interior is great too. You have plenty of room to take your friends and family along, which is always a bonus. It's also great to hear that you feel very safe when driving this vehicle.
-
The car has a very nice fit and finish, and the engine feels peppy. The steering is also very good. However, I did experience some issues with the transmission. Unfortunately, it shifts when it shouldn't and doesn't shift when it should. Despite this, I still rate the car a 7 overall, as the transmission is a major component and the issues I experienced were not resolved by the service team. Overall, the car is still a good choice, but it's important to be aware of this potential issue.

During the first year, the car would stall without warning, and despite bringing it to the dealer, they were unable to find anything wrong with it. It took two additional visits before the issue was finally resolved. More recently, while driving on Interstate 80 at around 65 mph, the car stalled again without warning and slowed down rapidly. As a result, I have lost confidence in the reliability of this vehicle and will not be purchasing a Mercury, Lincoln or Ford again. I would advise others to steer clear of this model.

I purchased my 2008 Mercury Mariner brand new. Unfortunately, the transmission failed in 2010 and it took some effort to get Ford to fix it. Currently, with 135k miles on it, the transmission has failed again. Additionally, the moon roof has not worked since the month after I bought it, and the seats, made of recycled material, always look dirty. Even a small amount of water can leave a noticeable stain. I take good care of my cars and have never had a transmission fail twice before. If I keep it any longer, I am concerned it will happen again. In hindsight, I wish I had read reviews before purchasing.

Hey Tran, I see you have a lot of work to do with the engine and water pump. Hang in there!

The power steering in my SUV has been problematic. The first time it went out, it was reset. However, the second time it failed, the replacement part was defective. While driving through a parking lot, the steering wheel suddenly jerked out of my hands and turned left, almost causing an accident. It is imperative that the issue is resolved to prevent any further safety hazards.

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share with you that I purchased my Mariner 4 months ago and it has been running great. However, I did notice some fluid leaking from the transmission coolant recently. I was aware that the Escape had this issue, which is why I opted for the Mariner. Luckily, my SUV is still under warranty with only 33,000 miles on it.
