2000 Dodge Stratus problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Stratus is a mid-size car that was introduced by Dodge in December 1994 and was based on the 4-door sedan Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Plymouth Breeze, and Chrysler Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. An updated version of the Stratus was introduced for 2001, with the Cirrus being renamed as the Chrysler Sebring, and a coupé model was also added to the range. Production ended in early 2006 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant after building 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.

The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.

After the discontinuation of the Stratus sedan in 2006, the assembly line and tooling were sold to the Russian concern, GAZ, which manufactured 9,000 units of a very slightly modified Stratus from 2008 through 2010 called the Volga Siber.

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2000 Dodge Stratus, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Cracked Dashboards: Owners have reported issues with the dashboard falling apart and developing cracks. This problem is widespread and affects the aesthetics and functionality of the interior.
  2. Blower Fan Motor Only Works on High: A common complaint is that the blower fan motor only functions on the highest setting, limiting control over the interior climate.
  3. Heater Blows Cold Air: Some owners have experienced the heater blowing cold air instead of providing the expected warmth, which can be uncomfortable, especially in cold weather.
  4. Car Stalls While Driving: Reports indicate instances where the car stalls while in motion, posing a safety risk and potentially leading to accidents or breakdowns.
  5. Runs/Idles Rough: Owners have noted that the vehicle runs or idles roughly, indicating potential issues with the engine's performance and smooth operation.
  6. Slips into Neutral While Driving: Another concerning problem reported is the transmission slipping into neutral while driving, which can be dangerous and result in loss of control over the vehicle.
  7. Check Engine Light Due to Pinched Leak Detection Pump Vacuum Lines: This issue can trigger the check engine light due to pinched leak detection pump vacuum lines, affecting the vehicle's emissions control system.

These problems highlight various mechanical, electrical, and safety concerns that owners of the 2000 Dodge Stratus have faced. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to ensure the vehicle's reliability, safety, and overall performance.

When was the last Dodge Stratus made?

The Dodge Stratus continued to be sold through the 2006 model year.

How reliable is a Dodge Stratus?

So reliable car!

After 20 years being manufactured, my car works great, the big issue is with the front end. At least 2 times a year, for the last 5 years I had to repair it. Parts are difficult to find and original or replacement parts, last the same time. I used it every day and its nice to drive.

SHE CAME RUNNING INSIDE SAYING IT WAS SMOKING SO WHEN WE WENT TO LOOK IN WAS ON FIRE, WITH FLAMES SHOOTING OUT OF THE HOOD. I CALL 911 WHILE MY HUSBAND AND A NEIGHBOR SPRAYED THE CAR WITH A HOSE. EVERYTHING UNDER THE HOOD WAS MELTED. WHEN WE CALLED THE DODGE DEALERSHIP THEY PRETTY MUCH LAUGHED AT US SAYING YEAH THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE PRESSURE STEERING HOSE WHICH CAN LEAK AND CAUSE A FIRE. BUT SINCE YOU DIDN'T COME GET IT FIXED TOO BAD, BUT IF YOU BRING IT IN NOW WE WILL REPLACE THE HOSE FOR YOU!!! AFTER MANY CALLS TO THE MAIN DODGE NUMBER THAT IS ON THE RECALL ON THEIR WEBSITE THEY FINALLY LEFT ME A VOICE MAIL STATING WE SENT A NOTICE TOO BAD. I AM SO THANKFUL THAT NOBODY WAS HURT. MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER HAD JUST GOTTEN HOME FROM SCHOOL. IT WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE THERE WHO KNOWS WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. I HAVE LIVED IN A DIFFERENT STATE SINCE BUYING THE CAR SO THAT IS WHY I DIDN'T GET THE NOTICE. IT SADDENS ME TO THINK THAT IS ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS SEND OUT A NOTICE WHEN A FIRE WILL RESULT IF NOT TAKEN CARE OF, AND THEY DON'T CARE. *TR

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've had your Stratus for a year now and have gotten fairly good service from it during this time. I'm glad to know that you've only had a few minor problems with it, which the dealership took care of after a few visits. It sounds like you've been taking good care of your car! :)

Sorry to hear about your experience with the Dodge Stratus. It sounds like you had a lot of trouble with it, as did your family members. It's understandable that you wouldn't want to buy another Dodge car after all of that. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

The v6 picks up adequately but guzzles gas. Brake pads have to be changed with absurd frequency. The build quality is fairly poor; something which is evidenced by continual small/mid ticket repairs that need to be performed on a bi monthly basis. The cup holders are awful. The rear windows is perched far too high on the back end, which means rear visibility is limited. The back seat does fold down though, which provides lots of room when you need to move something.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. When I first got it, it had 171,000 miles on it and needed some work done on the sensors. The previous owner had already replaced a lot of parts, including the spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, fuel pump, timing belt, and supposedly the transmission. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor and the throttle position sensor, but on my way home, I noticed that the car wasn't shifting gears properly, the brakes weren't great, the A/C wasn't working, the front windows wouldn't roll down, and the radio wasn't working well. I also discovered that the radiator fans weren't turning on, so the engine wasn't cooling down properly. After some work, I got the car running smoothly again, but then the engine started cutting out and I needed a camshaft sensor. It's been a bit of a journey, but I'm glad I was able to get everything fixed up. Let me know if you have any questions!

It seems like there have been quite a few mechanical issues with this vehicle. From bad rack and pinion to bad front rotors and tie rod end, to issues with the power window motor and rusted seat pans, it's been a bit of a bumpy ride. Have you considered taking it to a trusted mechanic for a thorough inspection?

I have the larger edition of this vehicle. I can say, as a single mom with a family that travels over 2800 miles one way to visit each summer, this car is amazing! It only cost us less than $150 in gas to travel from OK to FL in the midst of summer with a family of 5. I am so impressed with Dodge. Please, continue to make more cars like this!

You've owned this car for almost 4 years now, and have only had one major repair to the fuel system. I completely agree with the squeaky brakes and minor road noise assessments, but it also gets great fuel economy for a 4 door sedan! The only minor problem you've seen is with the wiring harness to the lights on the air conditioning console (they intermittently go out). Overall, you should be VERY satisfied with the vehicle. You are now over 100,000 miles and still going strong!

I bought this car used a year ago with 30,000 miles on it. Since then, I've had to change the spark plugs and added a K&N air filter which slightly improved the gas mileage. Although I didn't notice any significant performance increase, I'm still very happy with the car overall. It's fairly comfortable on long trips and the Dunlop SP Sport A2 tires I put on it 6 months ago significantly reduced road noise and slightly improved handling.

I really wanted an SUV or truck, but I found that I couldn't really afford one. However, I was able to get a great deal on the Stratus ES, V6, loaded (except sunroof). The car rides smoothly like glass. I had two minor problems with it that were fixed under warranty right after purchase (A/C leak and fuel gauge sent bad readings). Both were fixed quickly. Although the cupholders are inconvenient for me and can't hold the bigger drinks of today, the trunk and cabin size are good for a midsize car. It's comfortable and rides excellently. The gas mileage isn't bad either for a V6.

I've had my Stratus for almost three years now. During that time, I've had to replace the front brakes three times, but the back brakes are still going strong. At 57,000 miles, I had a transmission leak, but it was fully covered under warranty. Through rain, snow, and shine, my car has never failed to perform. I can confidently say that it has been 100% reliable so far.
